Subway sandwich shop: “No home schools will be accepted.” Update: Parent posts company reply
The Subway sandwich corporation is holding a story-writing contest for kids. You can win athletic equipment, gift baskets, or sandwich shop cash cards.
Except if you’re a homeschooled student in the “Untied (sic) States.”
Perhaps they fear the homeschooled students will call attention to all their spelling errors. Looks like the Subway marketing department ought to hire a few homeschoolers to help them out.
More here.
I vote for this essay. Touché.

Update 5/26: A homeschooling parent received a response from the Subway sponsor of the contest:
Dear Christine,
We are deeply sorry that the Subway contest has offended you and thank you for voicing your concern. Our intention was never to make independent schooled children feel discriminated against or excluded from this specific promotion. Throughout the course of the year Scholastic runs a number of contests and sweepstakes that are open to all teachers and students. The eligibility of this contest in particular was solely put in place to award a large group of children with the grand prize of $5,000 worth of athletic equipment. We do however understand how home-schooled children could benefit from this type of prizing and will make sure eligibility is open to everyone in future promotions.
To show our gratitude for bringing this matter to our attention, please send us the ages of your children and your address and we would be happy to send you a complimentary book to share with them. We truly appreciate your feedback and will make sure a similar situation does not happen again.
If you have any further questions please feel free to contact me directly.
Best Regards,
Samantha Calastro

conetst = contest
I see they have 19 in Iraq. Interesting to see they don’t mind making a buck off of a captive audience.
I am 55 and my two children are now WAY past school age……But Subway is off my list just on principle.
Well, looks like that is the last time I go to Subway. We homeschool our kids and even if we did not , I would find this to be rude and insulting.
I think they just wanted to give the public school kids a decent shot at winning.
I had to chuckle though when I saw that the parents had to be at least 18. If you have a 4-10 yr old, I hope you’re over 18. And if you’re not, you’re probably not sitting down with your kid writing essays.
At least they did specify you had to be a LEGAL resident.
Add me to the list of those who will no longer visit Subway. I actually do visit them frequently as they have a shop right next to my son’s Karate class and sometimes I’ll pop in for dinner but no more.
I never go to Subway. Cousin’s Subs is more [sic myself] better. Cheese Steak on Garlic Herb bread – yum! Cousin’s restaurants are only in the Midwest and Southwest, though.
I suspect that someone from the Dumbest Generation wrote the contest rules.
(I’m actually in the midst of reading Bauerlein’s book right now. I’ve read some criticism of the book, and I can tell that many of the critics are basing their complaints on their reactions to the title and the copy on the dustjacket. The critics also would say that I’m a hyporcrite, that I’m in no place to praise or criticize anything, since I haven’t finished the book and I haven’t read this or that counterargument, but I agree with what I’ve read in Bauerlein’s book so far. —Gasp! How dare you!—)
This is true to some extent, but if you ever met some of the women in our home school group, you would meet some absolute raving liberals.
Oh they are all for public school funding and support lib causes, but they refuse to put their kids in public schools because they know the type of education their kids would receive.
Whenever they get together, quite often my son (13yo) gets into some discussion with them, and being very conservative for his age, gives them fits. He seems to enjoy it immensely.
No worries terrig, there are lots of other options!
Just in case no one else noticed another of Substandardsway’s gaffes:
(Emphasis mine).
What a bunch of phools–oops!
Yeah, boy, we home-schoolers are really stupid…let’s see…
1. First child attended Virginia Military Institute on a FULL scholarship. (Now proudly serving as an officer in the Navy in the War on Terror.)
2. Second child is a gifted vocalist and was awarded a truck load of scholarships to attend a private college as a vocal performance major.
3. Third child is a songwriter and foreign language whiz at age 14. She wants to work for the State Dept someday as a code breaker in the War on Terror.
Yeah, Subway, we homeschoolers are a bunch of knuckle-dragging Neanderthals.
Quiznos, here we come!
Here in San Antonio we have Boston Subworks which puts Subway to shame. When not near it Quizno’s fills that void. No more Subway for me.
Its just as well. A story about how poor Subway sandwiches are, nutritionally speaking, probably wouldn’t win anyway. Just another reason not to eat there.
Typos in comments on a blog are hardly the same as something disseminated by a corporation for an essay contest! Besides, you guys and gals caught your own and fixed them.
HMMMMM:
Started homeschooling 20+++ years ago–
How many are accepted at USMA per year?!!!
Mine was….
Subway … I’ll spread the word..
Hell, I’ll bet half of their management never graduated high school, at least in this country (which stills doesn’t say much).
I had a Studio where I did Photography, photo restoration and many other forms of printwork. I needed some help and the Pricipal of the local High School said it would be helpful for both of us if I got an intern.
So this young lady shows up… in her pajamas. She came in, sat down with one leg under the other thigh and the loose leg swinging. Did I mention she was in her pajamas, and they had little Care Bears on them? She then explains why she’s in her pajamas, because it would have been too much trouble and too uncomfortable to change for something that was only going to last for a few minutes.
Then, while I sat there too stunned to comment, she babbled on about what her and her boyfriend want to do when they graduate (an internet cafe, I assume where people could show up in their jammies). THEN she tells me that I don’t even have to have anything for her to DO, all I have to do is sign a form saying she had been there for the hours committed to.
True story, I couldn’t make this up if I tried. And this was supposedly one of the High School’s best and brightest students… or so I was told.
Heaven help us.
That’s probably true for some, but even though we are quite firm in our Christian faith, we homeschool primarily because we want our kids to have a better education than they would get in public school. Our children have time to dream, create, play, visit museums when they’re not exhausted, travel . . . the list is very long, indeed.
As far as Subway goes, I think this is just terrific! In addition to the marvelous opportunity they have afforded me to teach my kids about supply and demand, I guess not demanding any more of their supply will also help my pocketbook. We win twice, yay!
It’s pretty pathetic to award the “grand prize” to the winning kid’s school. There’s some incentive to wax rhapsodic about meatball sammiches!
#15 SCOTTIE: Thanks for the link. I used it to tsnd the following:
I know, I wrote “I’m hope that this” – Subway’s contact form has no Preview function.

Subway:
NO HOMESCHOOLERS ALLOWED…
Foolish move–now you are being boycotted by millions.
You need a re- vamp of your marketing dept.
I’m another homeschool mom. One of our kids will be graduating from college with honors this year and another one who is high school age has been busy this year working part-time while taking courses at the local community college and getting simultaneous high school and college credits.
If you knew the young men and women I know who have been homeschooled you would stand up and cheer with hope for the future of our country.
WOW!
The places I have to spend my hard earned dollars has just dropped by 1 again.
Besides the sandwich I make is better anyway….
I notice that a lot of you commenting are either were homeschooled or homeschool your children… and that’s great! But I had to laugh when I wondered what the comments might be like if this topic was being discussed on Daily Kos (for whatever reason). Besides all of the profanity, the number one comment would be something like “does anyone know anyone who homeschools?”
This is pretty pathetic for Subway. They could have easily come up with some type of award to include everyone.
Secondly, I hope heads roll at the marketing agency that missed all of those spelling errors. I’m in the industry, and we have multiple levels of copywriters and proof readers to catch things like that.
This was my note to Subway:
I would guess that Scholastic had something to do with this restriction as well. The site stated the essay would be published in a Scholastic parenting magazine.
What do you think the chances of a homeschooler winning now even if they allow them in the contest?…. hmmm, me thinks slim to nil.
I guess the Subway franchise which is located next door to the Yearning for Zion community in west Texas may as well be boarded up. Subway appears to have been fairly successful at making sandwiches, and because they target community schools in one promotional contest, many here instantly jump on the boycott-o-wagon. It’s odd that many of you forgive just about any act of corporate maleficence (all capitalism good at any cost), but exclude your home schooled child from a contest, where the grand prize is 5 grand in athletic equipment, and a bunch of rage filled homeschoolmarms are swearing off footlong BMLTs for life. Great, now that you have conquered all the important world issues and you’ve got plenty of time to worry about junior winning 5Ks worth of wiffle balls in an esaay contest, please consider that most Subways are individually owned, by people like you, in your community, some who may be home schooling their own straight A, perfect little spawn, just almost as but not quite as good as yours. They will be the ones hurt, not the corporate executives. They seem to always do OK.
grumbles,
Your letter is one reason why I am so glad we live in a Constitutional Republic and not a majority rule Democracy.
Homeschoolers unlike kids placed in public schools and increasingly many elite private schools (like the kind my cousins went to in Seattle) simply do not do a good job of pushing academic, vocational, and moral education.
Unlike the groups I’m certain you will bleed about, Homeschoolers are Productive. They have every right to complain, when the participation of the “Homeschool Community” is belittled or even denied by people I’m certain you hold in high esteem-Subway can just go ahead and take its lumps as far as I am concerned.
Yet another example of prejudice. Fear of competition???
love2rumba,
You are absolutely right. They have every right to complain, and raise another generation of prissy little whiners.
RE: #118
Like you?
“Prissy little whiners?” I got the rest of it, but prissy little whiners? Ya kida lost me there… OK, I don’t have kids, so no dog in the fight, but I don’t see where knockin the kids helps…
Dang, Subway was always so convenient…
My lovely wife makes a sandwich that is vastly superior, because it’s made with love (and Miracle Whip).
I speak for myself only here, but the last time I checked the US Constitution applied to all American citizens, even if I don’t like and perhaps despise their viewpoints.
If someone wants to complain to a business or government official they have a right to do so even if I think their point of view is immoral.
I didn’t mean knock the kids Brook/Red. It’s just that I read the Subway promo as Subways attempt to 1.) sell some subs and 2.) give something back to the community. Apparently others, the whiney prissy ones, see it as Subway’s corporate mission to degrade their children’s education and make them out as 2nd class citizens. I didn’t see anything in their promo that lead me to think that way, but I was educated by the Jesuits. I wasn’t aware of any plot to degrade home-schooled children by sandwich chains or anyone else. I’m only familiar with comments like those above
about public schools and private schools. It seems to me that if all schools are as inferior to homeschooling as many here state, I would think Subways awarding equipment to try and improve these inferior institutions, in any way, would be applauded.
Who are we talking about here, public school educated kids?
I can assure you bananahead, my kids are not prissies.
What part of no home schoolers allowed to compete did you not comprehend?
Sorry, once again it’s the Jesuit’s fault. I read it as “Hey, we’re giving 5 grand in athletic equipment to the winners school”, when maybe I should have read it as “We hate home schoolers and their kids so much, so we’ll leave them out of our contest”. Is there really an anti-homeschoolism movement going on that I’m not aware of.
Also, I am a bannahead and my kids are prissies. Kind of you to notice.
OK, grumbles… I hear you. but knowing a little something about marketing it was all 1. sell some subs… giving back to the community, is just a P.R. phrase… I don’t even blame the marketing types, my guess is that homeschoolers were disqualified by legal as they did not want to take on the potential liability of giving gym equipment to any one who could potentially hurt themselves and sue.
Unfortunelly for Subway, corporate dropped the ball & let marketing (blessed by legal) run with this, not so good idea…
Hopefully the comming s**t storm will wake Madison Ave. up to a new demographic: homeschoolers. Hmmmm millions of educated consumers… others will learn from Subway’s blunder.
RE: #125
It is ok for you to disagree that Homeschoolers have any business to complain about how a sandwich chain treats them….what got under my collar was your invective “prissy little whiners”.
Here is my point: If I went into a McDonald’s and notice that it is “Black History Month”, and I said to a fellow customer “Oh it must be another effort by those ‘whiny ni@#ers’” (or just merely ‘whiny blacks’) to get attention”. I would experience deep excoriation by the public, not all of which would be given exclusively by blacks.
By the same token, calling parents who at their own cost choose to homeschool their kids “prissy little whiners” is just invective and should be equally damned.
I have been very hard on John McCain based on what I see as his public statements and stances, but I will not call anyone on this blog a “prissy little whiner” or other invective for their choice to pick McCain.
How fun to be among homeschool friendly folks!
If the reason for the exclusion of homeschoolers was the grand prize being awarded to a particular school, then a small amount of research would have solved the problem. There are plenty of homeschool sports programs that could use the equipment or the student could choose to donate to the local YMCA.
grumbles, I guess you would have considered the founding fathers prissy little whiners…most of them were homeschooled.
I’m not so sure the people who designed the promotion had any ill motives, and certainly they didn’t use “spekl chuck” as some of us forget as well.
The founding fathers were home-schooled? I didn’t know that (OK I went to public school)… but yes, that makes perfect sense. Thank you, I just learned something here.
Maybe the feds should cut a check for Madame Hostess… this is after-all an educational site.
Hey! “brooklyn red said:OK”
OMG! I’m being taken out of context! maybe I should run for something, huh?
Yes most were home schooled. Jefferson was as a child and he went on to found and fund the first public schools in DC, and of course University of Virginia. And people have been “whining” about public education ever since.
And I do think those wigs were a little prissy, even though they may suit your taste.
Yeah, no ill motives, such as specifically naming a group to be excluded.
Interesting to see you defending this.
Scholastic explains:
This is SOOOO much fun!
24 years ago – there were not a lot of us.
-only family at our church that HS.
-only family in the family that HS
-only family in the neighborhood that HS
etc etc etc …..
your child ….
-won’t be socialized
-won’t have sports (riding is good)(football too)
-won’t have friends…..
-won’t be accepted at any of the “good” schools…….#106

Ok, I homeschooled my four kids, all graduated, did fine, productive adults and all but I am cutting Subway a break here. When you consider what the prize was it is understandable why they excluded homeschooled students. Granted, they could have educated themselves a bit more about how some homeschoolers have large PE programs but in their mind home school meant just that… one family at home. It would have been ludicrous to give $5000 worth of PE and sports equipment to one family, that was not the intent. They were not aware that homeschoolers now have large co-op type sports programs. Now they know. In fact Subway has written an apology, which reads:
So I consider them educated now. If they repeat it they lose my business, if not they learned their lesson.
Here’s my families entry in the contest:
The smell of fresh baked bread coming from the store was so good that…our family was drawn toward it. We wanted to get sandwiches for lunch, but then we remembered that since we are homeschoolers, Subway doesn’t want us in their restaurants. We turned and went to the Quizno’s across the street for a delicious sandwich.
On May 25th, 2008 at 11:13 pm, ptrmom said:
As ludicrous as excluding an entire group from the contest…no matter that the equipment could have been donated.
Why defend this?
…all that needs to be said.
I will try consider your business in future plans for lunch, a little.
Yeah, we look stooopid, but we will tri herder in teh futer.
They should try spinning a little harder.
They made a mistake and apologized. What else do you want them to do? Free sandwiches for all home school kids?
A valid apology that they screwed the pooch, not some smarmy comment that they will try do better in the future.
This sounds too much like the typical libtard apology…”if some of you took this the wrong way”…
That’s ridiculous. Would you rather they not admit their mistake and not try to do better in the future? What the hell do you want from them?
Mookie, Subway did not make a mistake. They apologized if anyone was offended, but the promotion was fine.
I think the promotion was fine but in retrospect, they could have included home school kids in the second prize drawing. Wanting to give the sports equipment to a school makes perfect sense. I don’t think they’re in the wrong there at all. But from a PR standpoint, it was a mistake not to include the home schoolers in the second place drawing for the books and gift cards.
So you would have no problem with Subway excluding other groups in the future? say, Boy Scouts?
Once again, the contest was aimed at a school as defined by the sponsors. Evidently you have a different opinion, I don’t really know. As for the Boy Scouts of America….sure, exclude those homophobic liars.
So do you read any? or do you just spout off based on emotion? Rather than making up crap as you go along, try determining what the facts are first. You would look less stupid.
From Subway’s contest website
Buffoon. It says nothing about being aimed solely at schools. You must be a sammich maker in one of the stores huh?
Your response about the Boy Scouts says quite a lot.
grumbles RE: #149,
I do not have a problem with the Boy Scouts excluding homosexual practitioners from its ranks, and no I am not a liar.
There you go again with your invectives…
If you don’t want invectives slung at you, then don’t sling them.
RE: #149
I was an Eagle Scout by the way, grumbles, and from my personal experience-particularly since homosexual activists have been pushing to have the age of consent lowered- I then and now would have a real problem with them being in a scout troop.
Would you like it if handsome 40 year old guys wanted to volunteer to be on campouts with the Girl Scouts, and be alone and unsupervised with some teenage girl??
I can see the feminists screaming bloody hell over this one, whereas they don’t seem to care about boys who get molested
Really?
C’mon Mookie…try a little reading will ya?
So…do you slice the buns and grumbles works the veggies?
What part of the qualifier “in either elementary, private or parochial schools that serve grades Pre K-6″ are you having a hard time understanding? It specifically targets children in elementary, private or parochial schools. It also restricts what grades are eligible. It couldn’t be more specific.
So does the school write the essay or does the child?
Have you graduated beyond adding lettuce?
The child, who is a student at the aforementioned schools, writes the essay.
You finally get it.
There’s nothing to “finally get”. Scholastic/Subway created this contest with the intention of having the first prize of all that sports equipment go to the winner’s school. That’s why they specified the three types of schools that were eligible. They, for whatever reasons, did not want the sports equipment to go to a child who was being taught in their home. More than likely, their reason was that the equipment would be put to better use in a physical school setting with hundreds of kids. Whoever wrote the legalese of the contest could have said that in the event that the winner is homeschooled, the equipment will be donated to the winner’s neighborhood association, YMCA, whatever. That would have made the most sense but they failed to do so.
I said right from the beginning that I thought it was stupid to exclude homeschoolers from the contest but I do not think Subway nor Scholastic have some kind of hatred against homeschoolers that they’re exacting through this contest. They were stupid, not spiteful. That’s why the apology seems perfectly adequate.
Subway is over run with Middle Easterners and Pakistanis. It’s no wonder they can’t spell right.
Scholastic and Subway were STUPID first and NOW they are being spiteful. All they have to do is ammend the contest rules to add the “donate the equipment to their local YMCA” or whateverso all children can be included.
Poor apology, IMO. I’m still going to Quizno’s instead.
I was not home schooled and neither was my child. I did however send an email to Subway, as I stand in solidarity with you who do.
Here’s hoping my spelling an punctuation are correct.
Ok, I have to ask. Put aside the fact that Subway could have changed the prize structure to award only the child and look at the fact that they want to award $5000 worth of athletic equipment to the winners school (the part Michelle left out) and tell me how that would work if a homeschooled child won? I agree with those who bring that point up. Give the equipment to a park was mentioned but the contest doesn’t state what the equipment is and that wouldn’t work unless it was a structure. Give it to the organization of their choice? And then have the ACLU involved when the choice is a private Christian school or church? And then there are those inevitable lawsuits if Subway decided to relegate a homeschool child to only the 2nd prize. (also suggested) You can’t legally run a contest that way.
So how should they have manage their contest with that prize structure? Award $5000 to a single home rather than the number of children they intend the prize to benefit?
Perhaps we would be more impressed if Subway refused to sell sandwhiches to the Home Schooled.
I KNOW Subway KNOWS there are indeed Home Schooled atletic and social assoications and they too try to raise funds. Obviously some on this thread do not know that. Didn’t see it on the lastest teachers union rant did you?
Some people wishing to appear Politcally Aware should so some research before running the mouth. Just a suggestion.
Subway can do what they want. So can we.
Could you please provide some proof that Subway knows this?
So grumbles has a “Jesuit” education and calls the Boy Scouts “homophobic”?
Apparently the “S.J.” in your school meant “Society of Judas”, vice Society of Jesus.
Not much to brag about.
If that’s their assumption, it is indeed incorrect, as Mookie suggested. In some states – Massachusetts being one – homeschooled students are allowed by law to participate in public school sports, baseball being just one example. Many participate in Little League, as did my children, where such a prize could be a great boon. In addition, most homeschoolers are part of larger homeschool associations that organize group events, such as field trips, sports, etc..
My experience with homeschooling was back in the dark ages when “Is that legal?” or “What about socialization?” were, in that order, the first things out of many people’s mouths, questions which were patiently answered in the hope that those who followed in my family’s path would be spared such ignorance. Now, some twenty-odd years later, I find the exclusion of homeschoolers from this competition beyond comprehension. It would have taken very little thought and effort on the part of Subway to find out that there are numerous avenues by which the prize of athletic equipment could be awarded if won by a homeschooled student. Ignorance is no defense as far as I am concerned.
Addendum: I believe I just answered Kendra’s question (#163)
Please see my original comment (# 167).
As for this:
Suggesting possible ACLU involvement is non sequitur as there are no public funds (i.e. tax dollars) involved in the awarding of the prizes, Subway being a private corporation.
And in that respect, they do have the right to exclude homeschoolers from their contest – just I have the right to object by never spending another penny in one of their shops.
I don’t quite understand what your asking here but I will try to answer. I stated that I attended a Jesuit prep school simply to explain that I am obviously not as well educated as the home schooled hoard on this site. My comment about the Boy Scouts of America was a response to a direct question where another post implied that BSA was an angelic organization that even the evil sandwich purveyors wouldn’t discriminate against. And my response was they are not as such, but an organization that teaches that it is OK to discriminate against others base on sexuality, and has fraudulently boosted membership numbers to increase income from community based charities. The facts regarding the BSA are out there for you to make your own decision as to supporting them or not. Hundreds of people, charities, businesses, and state and local governments have ended support for the BSA based on these policies. As far as my “Jesuit” education being inferior, I don’t really know. Of course my priest had to demonstrate putting a condom on a banana in front of an entire classroom. I imagine when home schooled you could get one on one instruction from your mother.
Yes I COULD, I have talked to several of them about it. But it is just as easy for anyone to else to verify as I did.
Well, no, not really. Are you talking about local Subway franchises or Subway corporate? I think there’s an important difference because Subway franchises don’t create the rules for chain-wide contests. If you spoke to several people in corporate about it and they knew about the athletic programs and associations for home school kids, I think the argument changes from stupidity to spite.
If Subway had been found to have a single rat near a garbage can in the Bronx. Dookie would be “all for” a class action suit.
Libs are just cheap entertainment.
Atheling, not allowing homosexuals to be Boy/Cub Scouts should be a “CHOICE” that the Boy Scouts of America makes based upon it’s moral standards. Libs are not interested in diversity, they are interested in their agenda and power.
Meanwhile DEATH HUT …a.k.a. Planned NON-PARENTHOOD gets over THREE HUNDRED MILLION DOLLARS in federal tax money.
Libs will rationalize this, but the fight is on, and we must resist libs.
Scholastic, Scholastic . . . where do I know that name . . . Oh, a co-producer of the anti-Christian film “The Golden Compass” (they even lovingly offered “Christmas editions” of the book through their book fairs). I’m sure they didn’t mean to slight the legions of Christians who are home-schooling their children. Must have just been an oversight.
Since “The Golden Compass” debacle, I have boycotted Scholastic and wish there was a strong competitor that wasn’t so prejudiced against my faith.
Do the parents of home-schooled kids even use books published by Scholastic?
I always thought they sought out better quality textbooks like Saxon.
You guys are making me hungry, I think I’ll run over to Katz’s and get a turkey on rye. LOL
I have a one year old who will be either home or private schooled. No more govt. schools for me, they suck.
BTW, I’m a public school teacher.
Isn’t one of the major reasons to home school, the avoidance of such age appropriate left wing missives? What are they going to send, Heather has Two Mommies, or The Complete Works Of Karl Marx?
Fox and Friends just interviewed the parents. Seems FNC uses quite a few of your posts for “show prep”.
I wonder what book they might send? “Billy has two mommies?” I’m turning to FNC right now.
I think this story has “legs”. The public school systems in the US were great, but since the federal government stuck its nose in, they have replaced academic excellence with mediocrity or worse.
That is because most of their reporters (with the exception of Michelle and a very few others) are not journalists. As long as you are young, cute and buxom, you are hired–no intelligence or experience required.
Sorry, I did not mean to hijack the thread. Cable news anchors seem to be a hot spot for me lately. That is probably why I listen to mostly talk radio and view Michelle’s site
Your post makes you sound like an enabler. Please tell us you are doing more to educated all children and not just concerned with your own.
