Mark your calendars: June 26 From the Front Lines web-a-thon

I’m excited to announce a very special event Hot Air will be participating in on June 26. Save the date. We’re teaming up with Melanie Morgan’s Move America Forward and UStream to present an 8-hour web-a-thon with the goal of sending the largest single shipment of care packages to U.S. troops in American history.

The effort kicks off on this Memorial Day and will run through the months of May and June.

The grand finale for the push will take place on June 26th with an 8-hour Internet telethon, “From the Frontlines.” I’ll join Melanie on the livestream, where we’ll feature live and taped reports from our troops serving in Iraq & Afghanistan. We’ll also be joined by many pro-troops celebrities and leaders of grass-roots pro-military groups. Go to MAF for much more info.

Americans can sponsor the care packages from Move America Forward’s by ordering via this link from MAF’s online webstore partner: TheCampaignStore.com.

MAF notes:

The Jelly Belly candy company (maker of President Ronald Reagan’s favorite candy) has generously donated 100,000 bags of their gourmet jelly beans that will be included in the care packages to assist in the effort. While the jelly beans shipped in the past were warmly received by the troops, military members say their real value comes in being able to hand out the candy to the children of the war-torn nations in which they are serving. These 100,000 bags of gourmet jelly beans are now being used to launch a “Candy Diplomacy” program as gifts to Iraqi and Afghani children. Each bag is printed with the following message (in both English & Arabic): “A gift from the American people in hopes that your country will one day enjoy the freedom and opportunities that we have in the United States.” [Ed. note: Arabic message for the Iraq donations.]

Stay tuned as we roll out more details and be sure to get your orders in early and often!

This is one great work and deserves everybody’s support. Even the local trolls for.gawds.sake. This is one time you cannot say we support the troops and not the war (which is pure BS to the ‘nth degree) and do nothing.

Great idea, great concept. I’m glad some are using the net and notoriety as a positive force to win the War on Terror. By letting our war fighters know that although we are not there with them physically, we are with them in Spirit. And that they are in our hearts and prayers.

This sounds like it will be a wonderful project. MM, could you please post a link for donations on this site so those of us without access to streaming media can also participate? Also, the first link is to the Mission Aviation Fellowship and not to Move America Forward.

Way to go Jelly Belly! Glad to see the maker of my favorite snack treat is supporting our troops. One good thing about being stationed at Travis AFB the Jelly Belly factory was just a coupe of miles out the gate. Even wear a couple of their team jerseys when I go on my bike rides.

We always send care packages to our deployed personnel at our Air Force Base. Helping to prepare a couple of more should be pretty easy. Count me in!

Set a super squad pack (that should be 8-12 troops). I challenge everyone to chip in here and do what you can.

Also HUGE kudos to Jelly Belly, we’ll be buying some for our candy dish at home which has been leaning towards chocolate lately.

And kudos to the two MM’s :)

A very good cause! I just hope Jelly Belly doesn’t send some of their more exotic flavors. My son bought their Harry Potter beans and they were certainly different. I think one of them was called booger.

After donating to the cause, could we have a link to donate some good Quiznos subs and DD coffee to the participants?

That would be SENT not set. And if enough people do this it would be a good thing. If enough people take me up on my ‘challenge’ I’ll send a platoon pack in addition to this (24-36 troops)

I’ll believe people posting here about what they’ve done. If I see > 500 ‘troops’ supported (for example mine supports avg 10). Then I’ll do it.

I ‘trust’ people will be honest here.

In February after leaving Berkeley we stopped by the Move America Forward office in Sacramento and helped them box packages for the troops. This delayed our 18 hour drive back to Colorado. The time spent in Sacramento was awesome and worth every minute. I would encourage others to also help Move America Forward in any way they can.

    Eagles UP!

I deserve no credit for anything but starting a little competition :) Our military can use all the support they deserve, which is FAR more than I can give. I did serve about 30 years ago, but now I’m an old dude so this is a small thing I can do. Thread count is around 70 troops so far for people who posted what they sent.

However Michelle if you are monitoring this thread, you have my cell number if I can help in any other way, I live in San Jose, CA. I could easily make a trip to Sacramento or anything else that could help.

If you need people to help package stuff, I can probably drum up 3-8 people to make the trip depending on the date. I have some technical conferences/etc but weekends are normally good. I also may be in Sacramento next weekend.

I claim no credit beyond paying the bill which is not real difficult and is the least I can do for our troops. They deserve this and so much more. I just hope that I’ll be able to match demit’s platoon pack donation before the web-a-thon is over.

Someone (JetBlast) on hotair.com also did a platoon pack.

This is on a roll and it’s only the first day.

I thought I had a hotair account but I can’t find it in my encrypted accounts, so I guess not. I was going to cross post there.

If the store is using sequential order numbers (and it appears to be), and if those are mostly packages (or all packages), this is already taking off huge.

Thank you to the military and the organizers of this.

What a great idea! When I served in Vietnam 38 years ago, my family would send me packages from time to time. However, the item I most remember receiving was a history book that I had requested, and of course it has stayed with me ever since. I will do what I can given the less than ideal current state of my finances.

BTW, the message to children in Afghanistan should be in Pashto and Farsi, not Arabic, which they don’t speak.
