The PG7 projectile is launched by a booster in inside the launcher (the booster is at the tail of the round). After the projectile travels about 7m, a time fuse ignites the rocket motor which propels it to max range. The ignition of the motor serves to arm the warhead fuse. A timer on the fuse triggers it if the projectile does not hit something in time.

It would appear from the video that the projectile hit something in the alley (off camera) immediately after the fuse went live. The explosion would have thus have occurred too far for fatal results, but close enough for serious injury.

I do believe that RPGs have a minimum arming distance for the warhead, what it is I don’t know.

There are several types of grenades that can be used in the RPG-7. Some have a point initiating, base-detonating (PIBD) piezoelectric fuze: meaning that they are impact grenades. And, many others have back-up time delay systems, so that if they have not reached a target in a certain amount of time (something like four and a half seconds) the grenade will self destruct. The most commonly launched grenades are a High Explosive(HE) or High Explosive Anti Tank (HEAT) rounds.

Impact grenades must be unarmed until they are actually fired because any accidental contact might set them off. Since they are usually shot from a launcher, they must have an automatic arming system. In some designs, like the one we describe above, the arming system is triggered by the propellant explosion that drives the grenade out of the launcher. In other designs, the grenade’s acceleration or rotation during its flight arms the detonator.

i’ll keep checking and see if there are any other safety features…if there’s a min arming distance, is it possible to override?

All launched grenades, rocket propelled or otherwise, have mechanisms to keep the warhead from exploding until they have traveled a safe distance from the user. It’s hard to tell exactly what happened in this video, but it seems extremely unlikely that a guy was actually killed/severely injured by the explosion of his own rocket’s warhead. It could be a hoax, or it could be something else causing the explosion.
