Report: U.N. wasting billions on carbon offset scam

By Michelle Malkin  •  May 27, 2008 10:15 AM

The U.N. wasting money? This is, of course, no surprise coming from the same ninnies who brought the world the oil-for-food debacle and whose idea of humanitarian aid is sending condoms to cyclone victims. But I digress. The Guardian reports on the latest mass squandering of U.N. funds on the carbon offset scam (hat tip – Sweetness and Light):

Billions of pounds are being wasted in paying industries in developing countries to reduce climate change emissions, according to two analyses of the UN’s carbon offsetting programme.

Leading academics and watchdog groups allege that the UN’s main offset fund is being routinely abused by chemical, wind, gas and hydro companies who are claiming emission reduction credits for projects that should not qualify. The result is that no genuine pollution cuts are being made, undermining assurances by the UK government and others that carbon markets are dramatically reducing greenhouse gases, the researchers say.

The criticism centres on the UN’s clean development mechanism (CDM), an international system established by the Kyoto process that allows rich countries to meet emissions targets by funding clean energy projects in developing nations.

Credits from the project are being bought by European companies and governments who are unable to meet their carbon reduction targets.

The market for CDM credits is growing fast. At present it is worth nearly $20bn a year, but this is expected to grow to over $100bn within four years. More than 1,000 projects have so far been approved, and 2,000 more are making their way through the process.

A working paper from two senior Stanford University academics examined more than 3,000 projects applying for or already granted up to $10bn of credits from the UN’s CDM funds over the next four years, and concluded that the majority should not be considered for assistance. “They would be built anyway,” says David Victor, law professor at the Californian university. “It looks like between one and two thirds of all the total CDM offsets do not represent actual emission cuts.”

Carbon debits, anyone?

What does John McCain, whose eco-policies support the carbon offset scam, have to say about this?

Ask him.

But remember: No points for you!

In third world nations, energy and manufacturing sectors are generally owned either by a handful of ultra-rich families (e.g. the Riadys) or by governments controlled by a handful of ultra-rich families.

So what this story seems to be saying is that the UN has helped the tiny fraction of ultra-rich oligarchies in the third world to become even richer, with no net environmental benefit and no real measurable financial benefit for those living in poverty in third world nations.

Charming. Just charming. Although it would seem that the US and the West will be footing most of the bill, so I guess that’s “justice.”

No, I agree. It is anyone who treats global warming, sorry “global climate change“, as a religion who will do anything and everything to

    1) Justify their grossly unnecessary energy consumption (look at Al Gore’s energy guzzling mansion versus George W. Bush’s *truly* eco-friendly ranch)

    2) Force their worldview on the common folk. Barack Obama epitomized this last week with his “Americans can’t eat, drive or heat their homes like they want” speech in Oregon.

I’m still waiting for the day eco-nuts live like Ed Begley, Jr. Funny enough, Begley is one of the least vocal (read: whiny) environmentalists out there. He does what he does and gets on with it.

The rest? They have no problem limiting how we drive, what we eat, how many kids we can have, while they flit about the country and globe in private jets and motorcades.

All this was inspired by the principle — which is quite true in itself — that in the big lie there is always a certain force of credibility; because the broad masses of a nation are always more easily corrupted in the deeper stata of their emotional nature than consciously or voluntarily, and thus in the primitive simplicity of their minds they more readily fall victims to the big lie than the small lie, since they themselves often tell small lies in little matters but would be ashamed to resort to large-scale falsehoods. It would never come into their heads to fabricate colossal untruths, and they would not believe that others could have the impudence to distort the truth so infamously. Even though the facts which prove this to be so may be brought clearly to their minds, they will still doubt and waver and will continue to think that there may be some other explanation. For the grossly impudent lie always leaves traces behind it, even after it has been nailed down, a fact which is known to all expert liars in this world and to all who conspire together in the art of lying. These people know only too well how to use falsehood for the basest purposes.

In other words, “the bigger the lie, the more people will believe it.”

Let me be the latest here to claim that I survived Global cooling and I believe I can survive Global warming!

That being said, the entire concept of ‘carbon credits’ is absurd and will only lead to fraud. IF the Global warming people truely believe in their cause then there needs to be an immediate rationing of all carbon producing fuels. This is the ONLY way to effectively limit their production. Any taxing or crediting scheme will be subject to fraud and it will not help the ‘planet’.

All global warming enthusiasts must demand that all countries ration all carbon producing fuels until such time as an as yet undetermined balance is reached.

Point taken, but with a slight nitpick… I believe you meant indulgences when you said “absolution.” The wiki article I linked goes into more detail, but the thumbnail version is this: Indulgences do not forgive sin, but are the removal of temporal punishment for sins already absolved through the Sacrament of Reconciliation. So even when people were paying for indulgences, they weren’t paying to absolved (unless they misunderstood doctrine — certainly possible); they were paying to lessen or remove any time spent in purgatory for sins already confessed and absolved.

    Dear UN,
As you are well aware, I am the person who personally planted every tree that is less than 45 years old in Yellowstone National Park, (please see attached photos). The carbon uptake as a result of my effort is estimated to be worth $125 million over the expected life cycle for those trees. I do not wish to quibble over an exact amount so please send me a check for $100 million to me and whatever balance as a bonus to IPCC scientists to encourage their continued effort to study the global warming problem.

I’d use the other buildings for an Israeli consulate and headquarters buildings for JihadWatch and MEMRI. The money that used to go to the UN would be either redirected to the US military or go to a new League of Actual Democracies.
