Michelle Obama [quotes Elizabeth Edwards]: “If I say something that ends up on the front page of Drudge, I haven’t done it right.”

By Michelle Malkin  •  May 29, 2008 01:49 PM

Michelle Obama’s campaign appearance in Phoenix was off-limits to reporters, but a liberal blogger got in and filed a report with some revealing quotes. A few tidbits:

Michelle opened by talking about the start of Obama’s political career. She has told this story many times. In the beginning, she was an unwilling participant. She draws a picture of herself as a typical cynical American. She was unsure that she wanted to make the personal sacrifices demanded of candidate spouses. She says she was, at first, unable to believe in the possibility of political change. Most of all, she didn’t want her children to bear the burden of political parentage. She held up an index finger: “I am a mother first and foremost,” her point punctuated by loud, enthusiastic applause.

This story has been a constant in a stump speech she has honed for months. She explains that whenever she thought of her vision for a better America, she thought of her husband’s dedication, intelligence, and ability. She seems introspective, remembering the moment of her own realization. With a wide smile, she says, “I realized, he is the man I’d been waiting for.”

The audience laughs. Then she pivots, gently shaking a finger, reminding the audience, “Never let anyone tell you that your vision for America can’t happen.

Well, it’s her bitter, hopeless vision of America that’s precisely the problem.

…She went on to talk about how she also does not like being the news. She does not like seeing herself in a headline. She said that on the candidates’ spouses panel last October, it was Elizabeth Edwards who, speaking on the role of the spouse, said, “If I say something that ends up on the front page of Drudge, I haven’t done it right.” Michelle adds: “I hate clips. I do not like clips.” Grim laughter filled the room.”

Of course. Those clips aren’t, you know, helping her kids.

UPDATE [See-Dubya]: I’m with Jimmie on another MO soundbite:

I can not even begin to fully detail how factually wrong and flat-out moronic that is. Every single sentence is either wrong or the worst possible advice you can give another human being. The thing she said twice is such horrible of advice that I’m amazed she could throw it out there with a straight face.

Don’t ever make decisions based on fear,” is the thing Michelle Obama said twice. Hmm, should I run from this rabid saber-toothed wolverine? No. That’s just the fear talking. Pat it on the head, and you might make a new friend!

Someone ate their bowl of Superciliousness cheerios this morning. The only time she is the news is when she says something ridiculous. When that happens Barack has to follow up with, “She didnt mean it”, or “That’s not what she meant.” He could also pull off the “Lay off my wife or Ill Juke you.” routine. Let’s get real, for someone with so much education, she has no idea how to maintain the idea of tranquility on the trail with her ridiculous outburst. Just cause you say no press, doesn’t mean it won’t be recorded.

    Here you go.

MICHELLE OBAMA: I don’t lose sleep over it, because the realities are that, you know, as a black man, you know, Barack can get shot going to the gas station, you know. So, you know, you can’t — you know, you can’t make decisions based on fear and the possibility of what might happen. We just weren’t raised that way.

Two reasons I hate this quote. Anyone can be shot going to the gas station. Not just the black man. Remember Malvo. He wasn’t shooting blacks.

The second reason I hate the quote is because the woman is unintelligent. The use of “you know” over and over is just plain irritating. When someone ask you a question, that means, presumably, that they don’t know the answer. To say “you know” constantly just means your lexicon is so limited you can’t express yourself.

Is that what you wanted to hear, LGM?

This is not in the quotes MM posted. It’s a fact that more black men are murdered than white men, though maybe not in Obama’s current demographic. Very few of us are articulate enough to sound thoughtful off the cuff, certainly not McCain or Bush. Most official transcripts have “you know” and “uh” edited out. She’s arrogant. She knows better than the rest of us. Obama portrays himself as a pacifist, a new world diplomat. MO acts like a fighter. I’m sure Obama always tempers his personal decision on what reaction he expects from his wife. In other words, he’s whipped.

Please. As a reader and contributor here, I’m concerned with some of your sweeping generalizations:

    1. I always love it when you guys show yourselves for Precisely. Who. You. Really. Are.
    2. And frankly, it always happens.
    3. …your comments make arguing about your most objectionable stances wholly unnecessary.

If your fight is with #23, #44 and #45, then there isn’t much I can do about that, but I have appropriately used words in the past, which you claim to have seen used inappropriately on this site (Marxist, communist, Muslim, etc.)

If I am sticking my nose into someone else’s fight, than I apologize. But I am not comfortable with your sweeping generalizations of this site and its contributors.

Brian, you’re always considerate and thoughtful — whether we disagree or not. But there are lots of people here who aren’t, who post things that are so amazingly objectionable I literally somtimes email them to friends to prove I’m not making it up about this site, who say horribly racist things. I see it here EVERY. SINGLE. DAY. I stand by what I said: 1) they don’t do much to destroy the idea that this is somehow an inherent part of conservative philosophy and (for the record, I don’t believe it is) 2) those comments are not anomalous (I’m not ever surprised by them anymore).
Honestly, I started reading this site because I assumed my views on conservatism were too reductive and essentialist — I wanted to read what actual conservatives had to say. The comments on this site, I’m afraid, have in many cases only served to reinforce some of the worst (of what I previously thought were) stereotypes I held.

I’m sorry you feel that way. I notice a lot of ideological fights being picked here, but I don’t sense the “horrible racism” that you find, anymore than the pithy references to cultural phenomenon (Imus, urban dictionary dot com lexicon, etc.) that exists in comment sections on both sides of the political aisle.

My only negative blogger experience was when I pulled a benign form of lgm “wise-ass-devils-advocacy” on a leftist site. I certainly wasn’t “hateful,” but my political opinions had me labeled as a “troll” and resulted in my banishment and my wireless address advertised on their sight as punishment, all in one day!

I haven’t seen anything close to that on MM’s site.

That’s extreme. And speaking as a “leftist,” I’d have to say it’s pretty ridiculous. These sites are supposed to encourage political debate, not toss people off when their opinion differs from the majority.

We’ll have to agree to disagree on the content of the previously mentioned texts. I think implying that MO is a “nappy headed ho,” as the commenter who made the Imus joke did, is just so distasteful; using “street speak,” just because the person you’re writing about is black (does the poster really think MO uses the words “chilluns?”) — and make no mistake, the poster wouldn’t have used that wording if she weren’t — is meant to be provocative in the exact way it was. I find them malicious and base. Guess we have a difference of opinion.

I can’t disagree with base, but such is popular culture, for many years now.

And I can’t speak for Texas Tiger either. The way I read it, TT finds it ironic that a full-time campaigner is a “mother first.” The way I read the “hizzy” and “chilluns” remark was as a tongue in cheek reference to the starkly different way that liberals have to address “black culture” audiences and “white culture” audiences separately (Hillary and Obama in the pulpit vs. before the Knights of Columbus, Oprah talking to Beyonce vs. Nicole Kidman on the couch, etc.)

If I had used TT’s example, I would intend it as satirical humor, not with malice, and certainly not because I hate Michelle O because she is black.
    But again, that’s me.

I am done with this person, I had to spend 3 1/2 hours fighting my daughter’s school to have her put in an autistic class. People like this are just a blemish on well you get it.
The leftist blogs are malicious as you said and they certainly do try to find out who you are and where you live. Funny thing, I did sign up for Kos about 2 years ago but used a “junk” email. After my banishment for being a conservative, I received 123 emails to my personal account that I did not give to them. These people are truly frightening.

You say that, and yet you’re the one who instigated the back-and-forth. Your attempts to appear (as opposed to actually being) above the fray are undermined (alas) by the text you actually post. Your words, that is, betray you.

I think you’re giving him (and people like him) FAR too much credit. I highly doubt this is a multi-layered, Swiftian form of satire. It’s the naked ignorance it seems to be.

At any rate, Brian, as always, you genuinely are able to have intelligent discourse. And although we beg to differ on nearly every point, it’s nice to differ with someone (unlike others) who can do so while remaining civil and mature.
