Michelle Obama [quotes Elizabeth Edwards]: “If I say something that ends up on the front page of Drudge, I haven’t done it right.”
Michelle Obama’s campaign appearance in Phoenix was off-limits to reporters, but a liberal blogger got in and filed a report with some revealing quotes. A few tidbits:
Michelle opened by talking about the start of Obama’s political career. She has told this story many times. In the beginning, she was an unwilling participant. She draws a picture of herself as a typical cynical American. She was unsure that she wanted to make the personal sacrifices demanded of candidate spouses. She says she was, at first, unable to believe in the possibility of political change. Most of all, she didn’t want her children to bear the burden of political parentage. She held up an index finger: “I am a mother first and foremost,” her point punctuated by loud, enthusiastic applause.
This story has been a constant in a stump speech she has honed for months. She explains that whenever she thought of her vision for a better America, she thought of her husband’s dedication, intelligence, and ability. She seems introspective, remembering the moment of her own realization. With a wide smile, she says, “I realized, he is the man I’d been waiting for.”
The audience laughs. Then she pivots, gently shaking a finger, reminding the audience, “Never let anyone tell you that your vision for America can’t happen.
Well, it’s her bitter, hopeless vision of America that’s precisely the problem.
…She went on to talk about how she also does not like being the news. She does not like seeing herself in a headline. She said that on the candidates’ spouses panel last October, it was Elizabeth Edwards who, speaking on the role of the spouse, said, “If I say something that ends up on the front page of Drudge, I haven’t done it right.” Michelle adds: “I hate clips. I do not like clips.” Grim laughter filled the room.”
Of course. Those clips aren’t, you know, helping her kids.
UPDATE [See-Dubya]: I’m with Jimmie on another MO soundbite:
I can not even begin to fully detail how factually wrong and flat-out moronic that is. Every single sentence is either wrong or the worst possible advice you can give another human being. The thing she said twice is such horrible of advice that I’m amazed she could throw it out there with a straight face.
“Don’t ever make decisions based on fear,” is the thing Michelle Obama said twice. Hmm, should I run from this rabid saber-toothed wolverine? No. That’s just the fear talking. Pat it on the head, and you might make a new friend!

Then perhaps the role of First Lady is not for you, Mrs. Obama.
Just sayin’…
There is a sure fire way to ensure that what you say does not end up in soundbites… it’s called keeping your trap shut. How does one expect to campaign for one’s hubby and not expect to be in the limelight? Methinks she just doesn’t like the fact that truth about her and her hubby is something many Americans just can’t stomach
She didn’t say it right.
This woman is shrill and without decency.
Makes me want to move to Canada.
Ah, the slow dawning of appreciation from the ungratful, whiny, embittered, self-pitying shrew for her self-inflicted wounds.
Michelle Obama, this one’s for you:
Take up the White Man’s burden–
Have done with childish days–
The lightly proferred laurel,
The easy, ungrudged praise.
Comes now, to search your manhood
Through all the thankless years
Cold, edged with dear-bought wisdom,
The judgment of your peers!
- Rudyard Kipling
A mother first and foremost? how’s that racist church working for them.
Too much heat for her? No reporters allowed? What does she or Barry have to hide?
Hope and change right?
Someone ate their bowl of Superciliousness cheerios this morning. The only time she is the news is when she says something ridiculous. When that happens Barack has to follow up with, “She didnt mean it”, or “That’s not what she meant.” He could also pull off the “Lay off my wife or Ill Juke you.” routine. Let’s get real, for someone with so much education, she has no idea how to maintain the idea of tranquility on the trail with her ridiculous outburst. Just cause you say no press, doesn’t mean it won’t be recorded.
Funny, I’ve always considered the typical American as relatively upbeat and optimistic. But then again, I’m not a liberal spokesperson.
Just as I suspected. No one loves the sound of their own voices more than her and her husband. I have never heard two people who can go on for soooooo long saying the same thing over and over in different ways… or say nothing at all!
No wonder the laughter was grim!
Fixed.
Nope. Not buying it. I believe she and Obomination just LUV being in the “news” and if she would just think before she speaks, she wouldn’t hate those clips so much. Just a bunch of liberal bull she’s spouting - AGAIN.
*sniff*
It just tugs at my heart strings.
/sarcasm off
All together, now: WAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAH!
Please.
Something about not being able to take the heat comes to mind.
BINGO!
I guess better than a typical white person.
This one goes out to Michelle Obama on behalf of all the wives of former and current presidential candidates in the U.S. Now, for your listening enjoyment, here’s Ella Fitzgerald singing….
To paraphrase Shakespeare, some are born to be public figures, some achieve public figurehood, and some have public figurehood thrust upon them.
Automatic admission to university of their choice, quarter-million salary guaranteed upon graduation, eight years of world travel paid for by us, multimillion-dollar book deals based on their last name, family compound in Hyannisport…
I WISH I’d been burdened like that.
No, No, No. - what she means is she doesn’t like being criticized on the front page - she likes being in the lime light
First, she hates guns, now she hates ammo. What’s left for a bitter white person to cling to?
She likes my pie.
For some reason when I see her I think of Don Imus…..just saying.
Wasn’t Barry just dissing McCain for holding a closed fundraiser?
“She went on to talk about how she also does not like being the news. She does not like seeing herself in a headline”
Well then STFU!
If you want to see arrogance personified, watch Michelle Obama if she becomes First Lady. You’ll be wishing that the worst thing she does is steal the White House silverware…
Funny how all these politicians and their politically active wives cause divisiveness in one form or another and then say they want to unite us. Give me a break.
just the bible because I don’t believe she’s ever seen one.
Unfortunately, her vision for America is scary. I don’t know too many cynical Americans but the ones I do know are, as most of you have already stated are Liberals. These people cannot be pleased for anything. How these two clowns with their Ivy League educations can continue to be so unhappy in a country that has given them everything, is beyond me.
nyk, mistressjustice?
Any pea-brained comments about a fellow oppressed affirmative action knucklehead?
please the video now please whoever has it the whitey video!!!!aw gee, the VIDEO NOW!
I don’t think she’s bitter. I believe she thinks she’s a victim. It comes right out of the Rev Wright’s theology.
Please tell your readers what of the quotes you posted you dislike and why. She doesn’t want her name in the papers. I don’t like to take cold showers. That doesn’t make either of us bitter.
#31 that what Black Liberation Theology teaches blacks are victims.
lgm said:
Lgm go take a cold shower sc*mbag.
LGM, as a liberal you should not use hot water (global warming), if you shower, which judging by your picture looked like a pretty rare event!
You’re bitter because you know that in your heart this is a good country and you hate it. You hate those who put others before themselves-heck you probably hate first responders. We know you despise the military. Yet, here you are being able to spout your “verbage” at will. You are given that opportunity here, we are not on your favorite leftist sites.
If Michelle Obummer doesn’t want to be in the headlines, she should stay at home with the two punishments and get a second job so she could afford those piano lessons and ballet lessons. They are victims, you’re a victim as well aren’t you?
Perhaps that’s the key, “given”…kind of like a spoiled brat.
undrseige247 and terrig, you didn’t answer the question. Read #32 again and answer the question.
Well, I’d start with the quote “Never let anyone tell you your vision of America can’t happen.” Sounds great on the surface, but she and her husband tell people every day that their vision of America is wrong, and that they’re just angry people clinging to their guns and Bibles. My vision of America is back to the Constitution, small government, and lower taxes. $1 billion says she would tell me my vision of America can’t (and shouldn’t) happen.
LGM, she doesn’t want her name in the papers yet she wants to be first lady. WOW, thanks for proving she is not ready for that role.
And therein lies the difference between liberalism and conservativism. If a conservative says something that ends up on the front page of say, Daily Kos, they did do it right. In fact, that usually means they did it very very right.
It would be interesting to see the Obamas in the White House just for the theatre. But, Lord have mercy on our country, NO!
BTW, the largest Lithuanian community in the country (the south side of Chicago was destroyed by the Great Society programs and I hear parts of it are now a ghetto. Michelle O, can we have harlem as restitution?
Here you go.
Two reasons I hate this quote. Anyone can be shot going to the gas station. Not just the black man. Remember Malvo. He wasn’t shooting blacks.
The second reason I hate the quote is because the woman is unintelligent. The use of “you know” over and over is just plain irritating. When someone ask you a question, that means, presumably, that they don’t know the answer. To say “you know” constantly just means your lexicon is so limited you can’t express yourself.
Is that what you wanted to hear, LGM?
Well, for the slow learner, LGM-here’s one for you, “America is a downright mean country in 2008″. If that doesn’t signal bitterness even to you, there is nothing to say. Bathe lately?
Can you imagine what kind of makeover she would do for the White House interior since she has never been proud of America until now? I’m sure she would remove all the historical items. No historical portraits of white presidents.
Which is why I’m out here stumpin’ for my hubby and not back at the hizzy tendin’ to my chilluns.
Huh?
MO is a “mother” first and foremost?
Only if the child is “wanted” and not a “punishment”.
This coming from a woman who supports partial birth abortion is absolutely ludicrous.
I’d send this woman some duct tape, but it might keep her feet out of her mouth.
Thanks all. This is a real discussion. Let’s do it:
amigoneus said (#38):
I see your point. I would react badly if someone said: “restore traditional American Spiritual values” if I thought that meant Christian prayer in public school. In both cases, we’re not disagreeing that the statement, but other views of the person.
sonofdy said (#39):
She said the exact opposite. She is willing to put up with something she doesn’t like in order for her husband to be a politician. She understands the cost and is willing to pay.
Ron Rockstar said (#42):
This is not in the quotes MM posted. It’s a fact that more black men are murdered than white men, though maybe not in Obama’s current demographic. Very few of us are articulate enough to sound thoughtful off the cuff, certainly not McCain or Bush. Most official transcripts have “you know” and “uh” edited out. Remember, Michelle Obama is not running for office.
Lgm, you flake: did you read what “Jimmie” reported she said:
As Jimmie says, it’s idiocy at the beginning, idiocy at the end, idiocy all the way down.
Does that answer yer question, Professor?
Is it just me, or does anyone else get the feeling the Michelle O is running the show and her husband is just the front man?
#48-lgm, It’s time to change the bong water, put the door back on the microwave before using, and go lay down by your dish. Vacuous indeed.
It’s not just you, I think it’s all of us and that’s why it’s important that we continue to scrutinize her.
She’s arrogant. She knows better than the rest of us. Obama portrays himself as a pacifist, a new world diplomat. MO acts like a fighter. I’m sure Obama always tempers his personal decision on what reaction he expects from his wife. In other words, he’s whipped.
If Obama gets into office, MO will keeps tabs on everything, and any policy he writes will need to be vetted by her.
Just keep talkin’ bee-otch. Your one of the worst allies your husband could have. Welcome back to the Drudge Report !
LGM, so you are admitting you are an absolute terrilbe “off the cuff” speaker, that you can’t come up with anything other than “okay, ya know, umm maybe”.
Also, in the City of Chicago men and women regardless of race can get shot at the gas station.
No Brooklyn red you are correct. Mama Obama wears the pants AND the penis in that marriage, I’m sure !
That about covers it for the Obama family.
But you can color me Proud to be an American!
Quit thinking about the “M” thread earlier, lgm, and focus on the one at hand…errr…the current topic.
Thinking of Michelle as First Lady makes Hillary look like a class act by comparison as First Lady, especially with her philandering husband.
she is so classless.
she makes Hillary look good by comparison, and that is pretty sad.
sorry mytake I didn’t even see yours at #58 lol
#58, #59- great minds think alike !
Let her keep talking, this way America can see exactly what they’re getting. With 5 months to go…… a lot of people still haven’t made up their minds.
I wonder how she justifies their support for complete gun control if it isn’t driven by fear? If you aren’t making that decision based on fear, what are you making the decision on? The guns are my right for my protection. . . you shouldn’t fear me because I have a gun. You shouldn’t feel a need to take away my gun out of fear - unless you are attacking me.

You know, I always love it when you guys show yourselves for Precisely. Who. You. Really. Are. And frankly, it always happens. If some of us liberals post here less often (and I’m sure you don’t miss us) it’s only because your comments make arguing about your most objectionable stances wholly unnecessary. Left to your own devices, you’ll prove it through your very own words.
#44 wrote:
Even you don’t believe this. Or maybe you do. After a more than a year of reading this site and seeing daily (erroneous) use of words like “Marxist,” “communist” and even “Muslim,” this actually doesn’t seem any more loony than everything else that regularly appears here.
Closed meetings? I guess she doesn’t want us to hear just how much she hates us. I don’t need a closed meeting to tell her the feeling is mutual. My feelings come from the complete and utter fear she instills in me.
NYK, please don’t trouble yourself if we’re so offensive to you. I’m sure you’re more at home with the puff po’s and kos kids. You’re at least allowed here, we are “banned” when we mention we are conservatives. So, freedom of speech runs one way in liberal land and it’s a two way street here in conservative land. Yet, you have to step on the feet of those who welcome you. Typical of the libs, you believe you’re the smartest person in the room and you know what’s best for everyone. BTW the Obama’s are socialists but so isn’t Hillary. They’re just a bit more obvious about it than she is.
Have a happy day with your head in the clouds.
NYK,
For each tasteless comment on MM’s site, there is an entire liberal blog FILLED with with hate, vitriol and blatant racism.
Go ahead and pick a couple of nuggets here so you can go back to KOS or whatever and feel better about yourself and superior to others.
LGM you should be the last person jumping on someone who doesn’t answer the questions. For months I have been asking you where are all these abortion clinics being bombed on a daily basis as you have stated. Where are they? Where were they yesterday and the day before? Have not heard of anybody being refused an abortion and the Liberal media still hasn’t reported any of these bombings. Now answer the question.
garyt,
lgm typically strafes a topic and moves on. He doesn’t often bother to respond to anyone who responded to his initial comment, and I suspect usually he doesn’t even come back for a second glance after planting his little pile in a given topic. This is an unusual exception. He seems very eager to defend Mrs. Obama for some reason. . .although it’s fairly obvious to anyone not already in Barrack’s thrall that she doesn’t deserve it.

Please. There are comments like those I cited here ALL THE TIME. They aren’t unique; they’re typical, and they destroy conservatives’ arguments about what they DON’T stand for.
You’re “banned” when you resort to the kind of hateful talk that you get away with on more “permissive” (read: conservative) sites.
On May 30th, 2008 at 12:05 am, nyk said:
So are you saying we’re all racists here if we do not accept as gospel every word that issues from MO’s mouth? That’s a little bit of a post hoc argument, isn’t it?
NYK-you’re an absolute moron. Try going on Kos and saying you’re a conservative-that gets you banned. Nothing else will do it quicker. I’ve had it happen and so have others. You are an idiot if you think my calling you an idiot makes me “hateful”. Cry baby is probably more of what you are. We know liberals progressives whatever you people call yourselves have a very thin skin to begin with. Thanks for making my point.
Oh, heavens no — it’s not the word idiot. It’s all the blatantly — inarguably — racist things that are posted here (see my original post and directly quoted comments) that I’m calling hateful. Understand now? (In the future, just tell me when you need things explained to you. I’m happy to comply).
This from the poster who is kicking and screaming about the word “hateful.” Petulant child. You need a time out!
Um…I actually didn’t (so no thanks needed), but it’s nice that you tried to end your post from a point of superiority. I like your spunk!
No — nice diversionary tactic, though. I’ll try speaking slowly:
I’m saying that comments like the ones I cited in post #64 are 1) hateful and racist and 2) not anomalous here — not by a stretch.
Hope that clears it up for ya.

In America? By whom?
NYK, in your infinite wisdom you didn’t really understand my post. I will not go through it again, but you made my point by pointing out what you thought I was trying to say. As for a time-out, you are so childish. Have a nice day anyway in the clouds.
BTW NYK, I am superior to you and always will be.
No, I didn’t. But I like that you keep trying to pass this off as truth (“If I say it enough, it’ll just be true!” That’s cute.). Don’t ever let them kill your resilience!
Enjoy running around your house/the city in your Underoos.
Again you show just how mature you are. Typical of a liberal.
Just reacting in kind, my friend.
So…your excuse is?
And, not to worry, I’m not taking off points for time. If you want to wait a bit next time to come up with something clever — no pressure!
nyk said:
Please. As a reader and contributor here, I’m concerned with some of your sweeping generalizations:
If your fight is with #23, #44 and #45, then there isn’t much I can do about that, but I have appropriately used words in the past, which you claim to have seen used inappropriately on this site (Marxist, communist, Muslim, etc.)
If I am sticking my nose into someone else’s fight, than I apologize. But I am not comfortable with your sweeping generalizations of this site and its contributors.
Brian, you’re always considerate and thoughtful — whether we disagree or not. But there are lots of people here who aren’t, who post things that are so amazingly objectionable I literally somtimes email them to friends to prove I’m not making it up about this site, who say horribly racist things. I see it here EVERY. SINGLE. DAY. I stand by what I said: 1) they don’t do much to destroy the idea that this is somehow an inherent part of conservative philosophy and (for the record, I don’t believe it is) 2) those comments are not anomalous (I’m not ever surprised by them anymore).
Honestly, I started reading this site because I assumed my views on conservatism were too reductive and essentialist — I wanted to read what actual conservatives had to say. The comments on this site, I’m afraid, have in many cases only served to reinforce some of the worst (of what I previously thought were) stereotypes I held.
nyk:
I’m sorry you feel that way. I notice a lot of ideological fights being picked here, but I don’t sense the “horrible racism” that you find, anymore than the pithy references to cultural phenomenon (Imus, urban dictionary dot com lexicon, etc.) that exists in comment sections on both sides of the political aisle.
My only negative blogger experience was when I pulled a benign form of lgm “wise-ass-devils-advocacy” on a leftist site. I certainly wasn’t “hateful,” but my political opinions had me labeled as a “troll” and resulted in my banishment and my wireless address advertised on their sight as punishment, all in one day!
I haven’t seen anything close to that on MM’s site.
That’s extreme. And speaking as a “leftist,” I’d have to say it’s pretty ridiculous. These sites are supposed to encourage political debate, not toss people off when their opinion differs from the majority.
We’ll have to agree to disagree on the content of the previously mentioned texts. I think implying that MO is a “nappy headed ho,” as the commenter who made the Imus joke did, is just so distasteful; using “street speak,” just because the person you’re writing about is black (does the poster really think MO uses the words “chilluns?”) — and make no mistake, the poster wouldn’t have used that wording if she weren’t — is meant to be provocative in the exact way it was. I find them malicious and base. Guess we have a difference of opinion.
nyk:
I can’t disagree with base, but such is popular culture, for many years now.
And I can’t speak for Texas Tiger either. The way I read it, TT finds it ironic that a full-time campaigner is a “mother first.” The way I read the “hizzy” and “chilluns” remark was as a tongue in cheek reference to the starkly different way that liberals have to address “black culture” audiences and “white culture” audiences separately (Hillary and Obama in the pulpit vs. before the Knights of Columbus, Oprah talking to Beyonce vs. Nicole Kidman on the couch, etc.)
If I had used TT’s example, I would intend it as satirical humor, not with malice, and certainly not because I hate Michelle O because she is black.
But again, that’s me.
Brian, I guess the NYK troll doesn’t get that some of us have things to do during the day and can’t devote our entire life to him/her. I really don’t know what the problem is with this person but they cannot make a point without coming off acting like a kid, which is what they’re obviously thinking since they believe I need “time” for them. I am done with this person, I had to spend 3 1/2 hours fighting my daughter’s school to have her put in an autistic class. People like this are just a blemish on well you get it.
The leftist blogs are malicious as you said and they certainly do try to find out who you are and where you live. Funny thing, I did sign up for Kos about 2 years ago but used a “junk” email. After my banishment for being a conservative, I received 123 emails to my personal account that I did not give to them. These people are truly frightening.
Have a great day!
terri
You say that, and yet you’re the one who instigated the back-and-forth. Your attempts to appear (as opposed to actually being) above the fray are undermined (alas) by the text you actually post. Your words, that is, betray you.
I think you’re giving him (and people like him) FAR too much credit. I highly doubt this is a multi-layered, Swiftian form of satire. It’s the naked ignorance it seems to be.
At any rate, Brian, as always, you genuinely are able to have intelligent discourse. And although we beg to differ on nearly every point, it’s nice to differ with someone (unlike others) who can do so while remaining civil and mature.
NYK, your words betray you. Now I am done with you and your mindless rhetoric. I have more important things to worry about than your childish self, I have a husband in Iraq and a disabled child. Get over yourself and grow up.
Then stop playing on the Internet — which seems particularly childish for someone with as many responsibilities as you — and do what you need to do. Sheesh.
Also, for future reference, try to avoid quoting me if you’re trying to rebut me. You can see why that’s not an effective strategy, no?
Guess you missed Debate Club.
Well, well, well. Who called the Thought Police? If you’ve got a problem with dialect or parody find a dull, humorless site where you’ll feel at home.
TT, I guess he’s really impressed with himself. He lives the life of a trust fund baby it sounds like. Many of us get on this site to take our minds off of other things. This clown cannot see it. He has a problem, he’s typical of many liberals, the world revolves around him and his stupid “debate skills” as he likes to say. What an a$$hat.
How are things with the Princeton alum?
I thought you had “more important” (your words) things to do than go back and forth with me — a fight you started, btw. Apparently, you actually don’t.
Oh — and for the record, I’m a she.
Ta, ta. I doubt I’ll be on again today, as I have a thing called A Life. You should look into getting one.
Ms. nyk: I’ve noticed that since you started responding to other posters here, this conversation has become all about YOU. Your posts are condesceding and patronizing (especially the last one). Your party line is that you are “tolerant” of others’ opinions only insofar as they agree with you. Your responses to others here is so patronizing, although you try to sprinkle in a lot of big words. Give me a break and stop talking about yourself.
A cynical American is NOT typical…unless you are looking in Michele Obamas mirror.
