CNN is reporting this afternoon that Sen. Barack Obama is leaving Trinity United Church of Christ, his longtime religious home on Chicago’s South Side and a place that has triggered repeated controversies during his presidential bid.
Whew! It’s a good thing Obama got out in front of this controversy before it started to hurt him.
UPDATE: Here’s the YouTube of his press conference. I think he did this about as well as he could–the way he tells it, that gosh-darn press was harassing Trinity, so he’s trying to leave them in peace–but it’s still going to hurt him.
He sat in those pews for twenty years and was quite familiar with what goes on there. He benefited from that association as he rose in Illinois politics, but as he himself admits, Trinity’s radical, politicized preaching is now hurting his Presidential campaign. Business is business:

I believe that B.O.’s books describe how it was Pastor Wright and Trinity United that brought him to Christianity, and that his father, who was not a part of his life, was Muslim and his mother/childhood was non-religious. I think it is reasonable to argue that Obama may not have actually found Christianity at Trinity, but rather a liberally acceptable, political community institution…one of the institutions that exist both on the Right and Left that pose as one thing (church, charity, book club, whatever) but are in fact simply political institution. The messages I have heard from the pastor’s at Trinity are politics presented in a costume of religion. (I understand I have seen limited “clips”, but I’m also an old South Sider myself and understand quite well what was/is going on at Trinity.)
This break from Wright and Trinity then presents an interesting question. Is Obama simply parting ways, for political reasons, a nationally unacceptable Left fringe…the political institution of Trinity “church”. Is he in fact leaving what he used to think represented Christianity, now seeing Trinity for the political institution that it is, and in the process moving to the more traditional Christian church. Or has he discovered that he was never in fact became a Christian? I understand this is harsh, but if Wright and Trinity were the first place Obama could find a Christian faith that represented his (then) values, does this new rejection of Trinity translate to a rejection of what he thought was Christianity? And if so, what does this say about the man?

All this shows is that he is another typical politician.
Trinity was convenient for him when he was running for seats in Illinois, now not so much.

This is the best horse race I’ve ever witnessed in the last 20 years that I’ve been paying attention.
What even made my day better was hearing from liberal sister #3 who has given up on Obama. Nos. 1 and 2 were suspicious of him from the first, then decided to vote for McCain. No. 3 says she is sitting this election out because Obama is a “con man” and she can’t vote Republican.
The Lord works in mysterious ways.
Obama will speak to this decision later today. My bet is he will attempt to do the same thing he did with Reverend Wright and make it about how the Church has changed recently.
If that is the case then Obama needs to explain how he can change his mind about his church of 20 years when facts on the ground change but is unwilling reevaluate or even visit Iraq or General Petraeus to see how the facts on the ground there have changed!

Obama’s mother was an atheist. Since his father was Muslim, by birth he would have been recognized as a Muslim under the tenants of that faith. What religious exposure he had as a young child was to the Muslim religion, that being the result of her second marraige to a Muslim from Indonesia. I am not certain when he moved back to live with his Grandparents in Hawaii, and am not certain whether they belonged to any religious denomination.
Has anyone checked out his Washington, DC church? I’ve heard second-hand reports that it is just as radical as Trinity Chicago.

Good question. There was a guest on Hannity and Colmes Thursday night named Rev. Jesse Lee Peterson (bondinfo.org) who ended his turn on the screen by calling Obama a racist. He was promptly shouted down by the guest host (sorry, don’t know who he was), who said that was outrageous. Obama is very protected, and I don’t get it.
Now if only he’d resign from the Communist Party…..oops, I meant to say Workers World Party….darn, that isn’t it either…..what’s the name of that party?…..I know, it’s the Democratic Socialists of America…..No that still isn’t right…It’s the Party with a Jacka…I mean Donkey for a mascot? Yes, it was strange how he explained that continued membership in this “church” would be mutually destructive for both while he was running for president.
