CNN is reporting this afternoon that Sen. Barack Obama is leaving Trinity United Church of Christ, his longtime religious home on Chicago’s South Side and a place that has triggered repeated controversies during his presidential bid.
Whew! It’s a good thing Obama got out in front of this controversy before it started to hurt him.
UPDATE: Here’s the YouTube of his press conference. I think he did this about as well as he could–the way he tells it, that gosh-darn press was harassing Trinity, so he’s trying to leave them in peace–but it’s still going to hurt him.
He sat in those pews for twenty years and was quite familiar with what goes on there. He benefited from that association as he rose in Illinois politics, but as he himself admits, Trinity’s radical, politicized preaching is now hurting his Presidential campaign. Business is business:

Interesting. Obama notes that he, his wife and Moss had been discussing this for a few weeks now. Phleger, per the Obama campaign “left” the campaign a couple of weeks ago.
So, Moss is well aware of Obama’s possible departure from Trinity. Phleger is aware that Obama denounced Wright for his racist antics. And Phleger is well aware of other members of the campaign being asked to leave. Yet Moss allows Phleger into the church where Phleger delivers an uninterrupted tirade, in Moss’ presence, filled with both racist and sexist comments.
If Moss knew of Obama’s concerns, why allow Phleger in to deliver a Jeremiah Wright performance? And knowing that the press is present in the church, why doesn’t he attempt to stop him?
And if Phleger knew of Obama’s concerns, why would he choose a venue certain to have the media present, to launch into such a divisive screed?
When Obama chose to spend Easter in St. Thomas, it was reported (I think by Pamela Geller) that Wright was staying at the Hyatt there at the same time. It was after Easter that Wright delivered his now infamous remarks that led to the mother of all denouncements. Why would Wright continue to run his mouth when he was certain that (1) they offended Obama and (2) when he knew they would be picked up on the national news?
Wright,Moss and Phleger all knew that their continued pattern of racist behavior would hurt Obama, whom they connsidered their “friend”. Did they not care enough about Obama to tone down their rhetoric or limit it to private conversations? Didn’t they realize that they had the potential to torpedo Obama’s chances for the White House?
Interesting questions. And they beg another question: Was this choreographed by the Obama campaign as a way to preserve the black vote while assuaging the concerns of white voters by exiting Trinity? Perhaps that gives Obama too much credit for forward thinking, but it fits the rather Machiavellian imprimatur of Obama’s political career.
That is a scary thought, but it’s happened to me also. Hillary being thrown under Osama’s bus is almost enough to make me feel sorry for her, and McCain as the Repub option still sickens me.

I have received lots of emails about how Obama is the AntiChrist. I think along the same lines as you. The AntiChrist is suppose to be this terrific person and very smart. The more crap that comes out of his mouth, the more I think this can’t be him.

At least he cared enough to quit the church that has cast such a shadow on his campaign and left him with more targets then a firing range.
I’m no Obama fan….hate his view on immigration. But, I read and heard his comments on why he is resigning from his former church. Sorry to say it folks, but I detected a bit of logic and class in his reasoning. Now if he could only apply that logic to other issues…..but he won’t….

Okay, help me here. I was too poor for an Ivy League education, so I need some help with the logic behind Obama’s latest move. Obama says he’s leaving his beloved church for the church’s own good. It seems the big, bad, ugly media are harassing Trinity’s members because he’s running for president. So, he’s doing the noble thing and leaving for their sakes. But fear not, he and Michelle will find another church.
If he’s really leaving for such altruistic reasons, why would he want to subject another church to those same nasty media types? If the problems are all the fault of an overzealous media, then isn’t he setting up some other poor church for the same problems?
Odd, I’ve been watching presidential campaigns from a voter’s perspective since the 60s and I don’t ever recall a specific church being subjected to scrutiny before (Religions? Yes, Kennedy in 60; Romney this year, but not specific churches).
Maybe the scrutiny that Trinity is experiencing has something to do with its blatant racism and liberal politics. There is certainly a lot more of that being practiced there than any religious philosophy.
Win or lose in November, BO will be back at Trinity by Thanksgiving.
