EmJem, not a big fan of living here, a bigger fan of Hampton Roads. Hubby picked this place because after this deployment he has about 2 months until he can retire (if he doesn't drop his papers on 1/20/09) and hopes to be able to find a job up here. Also, my ex-in-laws are in McLean (they're no fans of this garbage at all, he's a retired full bird from the Army) and they're helpful during this deployment as is their "I can't keep my pants on" son who comes up from Va Beach to help me with my lawn and other odd jobs around the house-ie: my ex-husband. I'd rather be down there but hubby thinks this place is where we need to be and his worthless father is only an hour away but he hasn't been by since two weeks before he took off for TX.
But we're talking where we'll actually retire to and SC is looking better all the time. I'm with you EmJem, the sooner we can leave the better. :)

Yet another reason why I'm counting down the days until my husband's tour is up here in Jolly Old Virginia. Virginia isn't only for lovers, it's also for tax lovers. It's a Commonwealth therefore it's special and taxes you in new and creative ways.

The ugly thing that many Virginians either don't want to admit or already know is that they have no problem economically exploiting the military while they discriminiate against military spouses. Such a story is hardly surprising since Fairfax County seems to be THE up and coming place to be. The only problem here is that the Eastern part of Virginia is very crowded, the closer you live either to Washington or Hampton Roads.

When Fairfax like the other local and state governments start to recognize that shaking down the military while welcoming illegal invaders isn't the way to go, here's a laundry list of things they need to fix (I won't hold my breath):

1. Deteriorating Roads- oh, that's right VA levied some more taxes and fees to cover that...oops, my mistake.

2. Overcrowding/overdevelopment... please stop the condo craze currently taking off in places like Hampton Roads. It's an eye sore.

3. Military Spouse Employment- until discrimination is addressed, there are many military families (and spouses) not quite sure VA is a great place to retire.

4. Crime- Still rising though many local cities/towns swear they're putting more cop presence on the streets.

5. Education- for all the money VA has spent on it's new standardized testing iniative I'm still seeng a lot of aimless young men living violent, and short lives.

Yes, I am glad I'm leaving VA very, very soon. Sorry, Terrig... I know you like Northern VA and I've been there but where I'm living it's so overcrowded there's not much room to breath anymore.

Much to my chagrin, Fairfax has become increasingly liberal over the years. I live in the Newington/Lorton area, about a mile from Ft Belvoir.

The Washington Post rules in Fairfax County. George Allen was hammered by the Post while Jim Webb got a pass.

112 Maccaca stories and a series of "I heard..." stories of supposed racial slurs (including putting a deer head in a mailbox) by Allen all of them from the 70's. Nothing recent. Not one actual witness was ever quoted. Even the Post reporters acknowledged that the accusers were all partisan Democrats, but every story, no matter how flimsy, was front-page material.

Then Allen gave an interview and complained about the treatment of "his people," the Scotch-Irish rednecks: "Towel-heads and rednecks became the easy villains in so many movies out there." Towel-heads? Clearly this was another Macaca moment, more evidence of Allen’s racist proclivities.

But wait a moment. It wasn’t Allen. The man who made those comments was his opponent, Jim Webb. So how did our objective, fair-minded Washington Post react? Reporter Libby Copeland quickly related that Webb called later to lament, "I used the words that are used to stereotype them...I’m really upset if this is going to end up being the guppy that eats the whale here." And that was that. The Post’s treatment of Jim Webb was so favorable you wondered how the reporters could finish their articles on time after all the fainting spells of awe.

Fairfax County has about 850,000 people in a state with 12 million. Allen lost by less than 9,000 votes out of over 2 million cast. That's why I refer to him as Senator Jim Webb (D-WaPo)

Here is an interesting bit of immigration news from here in Virginia:

Our local news radio station is staunchly anti-enforcement and pro amnesty. At their website they have quietly shut down comments to their articles about the illegal immigration crackdown in Prince William County, Virginia. Their consistently pro-illegal, anti-enforcement articles are usually hammered in the comments section by their pro-enforcement readers. Apparently some people have complained that they were offended by the hateful xenophobes and wanted the comments shut down. So they won't be letting their readers comment on this subject anymore.

It's all on my blog:
http://apileofwords.blogspot.com/ .

But: as no one necessarily reads my blog and I do it because it's cheaper than therapy, I need to get this out where people will actually see it.

So let's get this straight, it is ok for illeagal aliens to attend Fairfax county free of charge (as illeagal pay no taxes) yet the American tax payer (many of whom do not live in Fairfax county) have to foot the bill because the Army wants to expand Ft. Belvior?
They should be suing Mexico for all thier freeloading citizens who are draining the school department's budget.

Connolly’s Republican opponent, Keith Fimian, runs a website here. I don’t know Fimian’s views on illegal immigration and sanctuary…but I know his opponent’s.

Just visited his site. Emphasis on business, education and small government Nothing could I see on illegal immigration.

Methinks he may believe he'd lose his business support if he addressed his view on illegal immigration. That is if it is any different than his opponent.

Every year students take home little cards for their parents to fill out regarding whether or not they live in military housing. If child does, the federal government gives stipends (which are usually very large) to offset the "tax base" problem posed by students living in "government housing" as one teacher said many years ago when I taught in Virginia Beach. So, understand this people, the feds pick up the tab. This argument won't wash.
Additionally, the families on post do go out in the communities and shop, buy as much if not more than the illegals do.
Fairfax has had a large increase of illegals from PWC recently. It's obvious that the illegals are more important to those in the Fairfax County government system.

Until these illegal aliens show up on the doorstep of our elected officials looking for three hots and cot, nothing, zip, zero, zilch, nada will be done about it. They don't have to live with the consequences of their legislation... only the little people do. Vote the bums out.

Having served my 20 in the U.S. military, my children went to public schools, these school districts received payment from the federal government for each child enrolled. This payment was substantial, and was to offset the loss of tax revenue for military, non-state residents.

While I would like to see all illegal aliens sent home and the employers who indirectly encourage them by hiring them punished, this latest BRAC made some seriously wrong decisions, and the whole thing should be voided.

Fairfax County could probably solve this problem by pulling the welcome mat for illegals thus freeing up room for Ft. Belvoir-related children.
