“He lived out what he wanted to do and that is to be a Marine.”
Lance Cpl. Robert Crutchfield, R.I.P.:
On leave from the violence he had survived in the war in Iraq, a young Marine was so wary of crime on the streets of his own home town that he carried only $8 to avoid becoming a robbery target.
Despite his caution, Lance Cpl. Robert Crutchfield, 21, was shot point-blank in the neck during a robbery at a bus stop.
Feeding and breathing tubes kept him alive 41/2 months, until he died of an infection on May 18.
Two men have been charged in the attack, and Cuyahoga County Prosecutor Bill Mason said Friday the case was under review to decide whether to seek the death penalty.
“It is an awful story,” said Alberta Holt, the young Marine’s aunt and his legal guardian when he was a teenager determined to flee a troubled Cleveland school for safer surroundings in the suburbs.
Crutchfield was attacked on January 5 while he and his girlfriend were waiting for a bus. He had heeded the warnings of commanders that a Marine on leave might be seen as a prime robbery target with a pocketful of money, so he only carried $8, his military ID card and a bank card.
“They took it, turned his pockets inside out, took what he had and told him since he was a Marine and didn’t have any money he didn’t deserve to live. They put the gun to his neck and shot him,” Holt told The Associated Press.
… Connie LaNasa, who works in [Crutchfield's high] school office, said Crutchfield was a well-behaved student and went about his school work with little notice.
“He lived out what he wanted to do and that is to be a Marine,” LaNasa said.

I wish I lived near. I would sit in the front seat of the court, in uniform (mine is USAF), for each day of the trial.
This makes me so very sad and so very angry all at once.
What is wrong with people?
RIP Lance Cpl. Robert Crutchfield, and thank you.
Sounds like a hate crime to me. We should urge that they prosecute it as such.
RIP.
I agree. If they killed him because — or even partially because — he was in a military uniform, they should pay extra for the venom they spewed on a man just for serving his country. I bet we disagree on every other point, but “punishing” someone because of who they are or what they choose to do deserves an equal and opposite counter-punishment.
Semper Fi Lance Cpl. Robert Crutchfield, may God bless you and welcome you home.
Thank you for your service to our nation, there are too few great young Americans like you.
As much as your loss saddens me I can only imagine the pain of those you loved.
This is horrible. Echoing #2, what is wrong with people? What’s wrong with our world? Stories like this make me want to stick my head in the sand so I don’t have to face this kind of ugliness.
God bless you, Lance Cpl. Robert Crutchfield. May you wake up on streets of gold.
Rest in peace.
These SCUMBAGS need to be prosecuted, convicted, sentenced and then put to death.
The killing of this Marine is an attack on us all. His killers don’t deserve to live. They should be executed as soon as possible. They probably won’t be, thanks to liberal lunatics who are enablers of evil.
I hear you
Sickening. It sounds to me like Lance Cpl. Robert Crutchfield was executed for being a United States Marine.
Anyone who has survived an episode like this knows that the punk with the gun still might shoot you after you comply with his demands. I have to believe that Cpl. Robert Crutchfield had to hold back from snapping these two punks in two because he was thinking of the safety of his date.
If convicted, Ean Farrow and Thomas Ray III should be executed and photographed just like President Lincoln’s conspirators.
Murdered for being a United State Marine. I want to hear an immediate condemnation of this tragedy from Code Pink and all other like-minded freaks.
Death by firing squad. I volunteer.
Lance Cpl. Robert Crutchfield, R.I.P.
I can’t imagine his girlfriend having to witness this. My heart and prayers go out to her and both families.
This is just horrible.
That I am now living in a country with such hatred and loathing for our Military just sickens me. And I’m not saying this through anger, but tears.
I’m sure the anger will come, but right now I’m just overwhelmed with sadness over this.
I watch classic movies a lot and several I’ve seen lately have stars making a plea for Americans to buy War Bonds as these movies were made during WWII. A time when we loved our country and appreciated our Military. And now look how things are. Just sickening.
I’ve said it here before, and I’ll say it again:
I’ve never been in the military. The closest I’ve come is working as an intern at a U.S. embassy.
Let me tell you – there is no feeling in the world like walking into a building and knowing it is guarded by the United States Marine Corps. Even if it’s only a handful of them, you can know without a shadow of a doubt that the man down at Post One and his compatriots will fight until his last breath to keep that building and its occupants safe. It’s one thing knowing you’re in a building with security – it’s another to know you’re in a building guarded by United States Marines.
God bless them all, and all of their loved ones.
My heart cries for Robert’s aunt Alberta and for his comrades in arms.
Rest in peace – dear brave one.
As for E. Farrow and T. Ray-death by firing squad should be your punishment-you are treasonist beasts.
#1 and #11, I’d be right there with you.
I’m reminded of a story from 2003 of another Marine who had been shot after returning from deployment. It really sickens me to read stories like this, knowing that my colleagues survive combat only to be killed in front of their loved ones.
Semper Fi, LCpl Crutchfield.
That is simply sickening.
Absolutely! Cuyahoga County should prosecute with the goal of putting these criminals to death.
And who exactly is responsible for the hatred and disrespect of our military?? Hmmmm????
I’m pretty hardened by all the violence you read about these days, but this story made me shed a tear.
The animals who did this have earned a speedy trial and a swift, final, and very public punishment. Hanging in the town square?
I feel like Tommy Lee Jones at the end of “No Country for Old Men”. I seriously don’t understand the callous disrespect for human life exhibited by some people. Too many people. Young men get shot and killed every day in similar pointless ways, who aren’t in the military.
“
I think some of you give the thugs here too much credit for political thinking or “statement” making. It looks like just some throw away line, by some souless loss cause where marine could have been replaced with banker or mailman.
We live in an extremely violent society and it sickens and saddens me. Remember Jamiel Shaw also.
An immediate death sentence is the only appropriate punishment. It won’t bring back Mr Crutchfield, but it will be justice he deserves.
Ah this incident made me so angry. How dare these robbers..
I studied Islamic laws of 700ad-1000ad; they would cut robber’s hands and hang murderers in the central square for others to see and and to make an example of these criminals and jeez their society was peaceful. We are in 21st century, today we have nutcase judges and thugs and illegals running wild. Prosecutors should seek death penalty for these bastards.
As long as we continue to coddle prisoners, this will continue. I definitely do not agree with using hate crimes legislation in ANY circumstances since it grants the government an open license to prosecute thought.
Our entire system is broken and a return to quick and efficient justice may just be the ticket. First, we need some people in charge we can trust. It is a dual-edged sword and unfortunately, we the people are on the receiving end of both edges.
You kill someone, get caught, you die. Why is it that these same advocates against the death penalty who want to remove all of our guns say that victims were just in the wrong place at the wrong time and it was just unforeseen circumstances, but even one innocent death of a criminal is too much? Hypocrisy? Death wish?
This Marine who served our nation deserved to live but Justice is the best gift we can give him now. As for his friends and family, all we can offer are our prayers.
LCpl Crutchfield, rest in peace in our Lord’s loving embrace. Semper Fidelis, brother. My thoughts and prayers are with your family.
As for the perpetrators of this heinous act, may they be convicted by a jury of their peers and sentenced according to the despicable nature of their crimes. Finally, may they face our Lord for their final judgment!
The only acceptable punishment for this crime is execution. If they are not executed, they should be forcibly removed from whatever incarceration they are put into, and then executed. There is no other proper way to deal with this sort of crime, and to hell with the pathetic pro-criminal justice system that is going to try and get them off with a slap on the wrist.
Let his brother Marines have the two of them.
The authorities who “run” Cleveland and Cuyahoga County should be ashamed. Clean that place up!
May God the Father Almighty rest his Soul and comfort his family.
Amen, Cameron.
Poetic Justice
His fellow Marines within Iraq even?
Sending them to Iraq wouldnt work. There’s less violence in Baghdad than there is in Cleveland. Although, the Marines there might make an exception to honor Lance Cpl. Robert Crutchfield.
Ok, ladies, gentlemen, librals…
Why should these two SoBs be charged with hate crimes? Last time I checked, conservatives were opposed to hate crimes. Just sentence them to Leavenworth, let natural deselction do its job.
And Missjustice, welcome to the anti-hate-crimes side of things.
You mean the same people that gave us Dennis Kucinich? For some reason I don’t see that happening.
Honors to LCpl Crutchfield. He is our kind of man – God, country and corps.
The scum that murdered him don’t deserve to live. For the firing squad, the guns and ammo are on me.
Semper Fidelis
As long as hate crime modifiers are the law, they need to be used for ALL hate crimes, not only for crimes committed by white men against blacks, Muslims, or gays. Equality under the law.
That said, my heart breaks for Lance Cpl Crutchfield, his girlfriend, and his aunt. I hope they know how many people respect and honor him for his service.
Horrible.
Lance Cpl. Crutchfield got out of the hood and made something of himself.
Its so very, very sad that these two hoodlums had a gun on him when he was unarmed.
These punks deserve the death penalty.

This incident occurred in an area where John Kerry got more votes than Bush. A territory governed by a philosophy that has cheapened life through entitlement mentality. A plantation forum that tolerates the likes of a Rev. Wright or Pfleglepuss and creates human beings that destroy instead of design, tear down rather than build up, kill rather than create and on the cycle goes. The DNC, MSM and liberals in general have a lot of blood on their collective hands. They will have to account, all, when they meet their Maker. May God care for and bless the likes of Robert Crutchfield, a young life snuffed out too soon.
#3: I hope not. Every crime is a “hate” crime. “Hate” crime is thought crime. One of the worst bits of legislation in recent history.
#13: Joy, this wasn’t a crime rooted in hatred or loathing for the military. Unfortunately, this is just your typical, every day crime. The guy was a target for predators just as tourists are targets for pickpockets.
RIP Sir. RIP.
Upon reading this, the first thing that popped into my mind was – my God. This is so heartbreaking. Not because he was a United States Marine – because he was a human being treated like trash… The fact that he was a Marine and was reportedly killed for that reason makes my blood boil.
[Emphasis mine]
I think that speaks for itself.
My condolences and prayers go out to LCpl Crutchfield’s family and friends in their moment of loss. May the lord grant them peace in their time of sorrow.
Take heart knowing that your Marine has simply received a new set of orders from the supreme commandant for a new assignment. He is to report at once to his new duty station and take up his post guarding the streets of heaven.

Here’s one hate crime that doesn’t get any attention from the lefties. Everyone who was involved in his killing should be hanged.
R.I.P., Lance Cpl. Crutchfield and thank you for your service. A young life cut short senselessly.
The culls responsible for such a heinous act deserve to feel the full extent of the punishment they could face.
I would seem pretty cut-and-dry to me. Go for the death penalty, now.
I agree. If he were gay or some other ACLU preferred minority, it would be all over the news. But a decent, honest guy minding his own business doesn’t get coverages, particularly since he is a Marine.
RIP.
Throw the book at them…literally…at their heads.
Semper Fi Robert. Let the judge sentence these crapweasels to spent 30 days with a Marine grunt unit in Iraq. Anyone think they would need round trip tickets?
I remember in the early days of the Iraq war one of our troops was murdered buying a soft drink in a shop in Bahgdad in a similar fashion. Soon there were calls in Congress by Mr. Murtha to redeploy our troops.
Perhaps we should redeploy our troops from Cleveland to Taiwan now.
Not!
I don’t know what to say. This hurts. Semper Fi, Robert. You’re position is covered, rest now. And yes no death like this is any less heinous, but this one hurts more. Sorry!
I agree with those who don’t want to see the hate crime nonsense used (since every crime is a hate crime).
However, HeatherRadish does have a point. Since it exists, maybe prosecutors ought to push it on every criminal case that involves violence. When every victim becomes victim of a hate crime, and the courts are clogged up with additional paperwork, maybe the legislators will see the idiocy of it.
I’d love to see treason added to those SOB’s charges. Is that legally possible? Any lawyers drop in here?
Guess this is how the leftist anti-war protestors really feel? What a horrible story. I am not for the death penalty but maybe for these two I’d make an exception. I would also love to see treason added to the charges as well but it won’t happen.
May you RIP Lance Corporal Crutchfield and may God watch over your family and hold them in his hand.
Liberals routinely float the idea that young people join the military because they are poor, or because they are black or, as John F’n Kerry put it – they didn’t do their homework
The liberal solution is welfare to deprive children of having a father, to remove God from schools to void any moral basis for honor and civility, to load the courts with judges who have zero concern for victims but kowtow to rehabilitating the resulting ‘product of liberal education’ – criminals who don’t have the slightest notion of right and wrong and, to take away guns from law abiding citizens – even those who held one to defend our ‘liberty’ at home. Liberals tout the number of soldiers who died fighting for our country but will say ZERO about this one who was killed by the ice-veined murderers that their twisted socialist ‘ideals’ produced – the enemy within.
My deepest sympathy to Alberta Holt; I pray that she knows that she is not alone; that there still are people in this country who honor her nephew’s service to his country and suffer her loss with her.

Adding military service to protected groups in hate crime legislation isn’t such a bad idea. This horrible murder terrorizes the military community and that is unacceptable.
The US Military is the group that does the protecting. If the laws on the books were enforced perhaps these thugs wouldn’t “run” the streets as if they are a god. This young man’s life was in their hands and that is highly unacceptable. Where are all the people who decry and demand that we understand the root causes of why criminals do what they do? I mean there has to be a reason for it. They are scum and I don’t care if this is labeled a hate crime or not – they should be punished to the fullest extent of the law. But what does it matter, they serve some time in jail and they’ll be released early for good behavior and then they return to their life of crime. It’s the circle of the judicial system in the US.
The military community isn’t about to be terrorized by anybody. Stuff the hate crimes tome. I am hoping there will be an accounting, if more of this continues, the way we ( you know who I mean) can best administer it.
What a tragic loss for LCpl. Crutchfield’s family, and for our country. This young man fought for our country and survived, only to be killed on his home turf.
I don’t think they were making a political statement, perhaps just trying to pull him back down into the mire with them…he made something of himself, they didn’t. Misery loves company.
This is the product of a culture that has lost its moral compass, that considers people not only entitled to whatever they want immediately when they want it, but who cannot be “judged” or told what to do (i.e., moral relativism).
I oppose all hate-crimes legislation or enhancers. Too much like thought policing to me.
Unless someone explicitly says “I’m killing you because you’re (gay, Christian, white, black, etc.)” such charges are pretty much built on circumstantial evidence.
This reminds me of a shooting here not to long ago. A guy came out of a bar, was held up, surrendered his wallet (and his female companions gave their purses) and the thugs still shot and killed him.
My prayers are with Lance Cpl. Robert Crutchfield, his family and friends, his community, and the thugs who did this.
Semper Fi, LCpl Crutchfield my brother, you did everthing in life to earn the most prestigious title and honor in the world, United States Marine, you earned your title selflessly, you fought along the side of your brothers and died with honor in the uniform of a Marine, you lived through the perils of war only to be struck down by those you commited to protect, God Bless You and your family, God has set a table in heaven for you so you may feast with the Saints, save me a seat I’ll dine with you later my brother.
MtsEdge,
Valid point. It’s what I like to call the crabs in the barrel mentality. The one at the top gets pulled back down by the others at the bottom of the barrel.
Sadly, this is way too prevalent.
Lance Cpl. Robert Crutchfield, may you lay in honor amongst your brethern.
It is a shame that someone is safer on the streets of Bagdhad than in any metro area in the U.S.A.
Liberals decry the war and the surge, but won’t admit that more people are killed on the streets of America.
I agree. Just wondering…since he knew there could be trouble for him on the streets, was he packin’ heat?
Our prayers to the family, friends, and brothers in arms of Lance Cpl Crutchfield forced to endure the senseless lose of this young man. I have found through my own experience on active duty that there is a special class of bottom feeders that would not last the first day of basic training that make it a point to prey on military personnel. The criminals responsible for the death of this young man remind me of some that I have had the misfortune to meet during my active duty days. I would gladly join the firing party to give these dirt bags the justice they deserve, but prefer to see them handed over to Lance Cpl Crutchfield’s fellow Marines for proper administration of the punishment their actions have earned.
Mtsedge
no, I’m sure he wasn’t nor would he, not part of the uniform and all that. But, one never knows in the future does one? ….just sayin’
I don’t see any reason for any debate about the death penalty. Seems like a slam dunk to me !! I consider any murder a hate crime, but this one is beyond comprehension.
Lance Cpl Crutchfield, R.I.P.
I read somewhere that many commercial airline pilots are former military. This should justify them carrying weapons when they’re flying commercial planes, for the safety of all on board. I think it should be the same w/all other military personnel. Perhaps LCpl Crutchfield would be alive today if he could have shown them some consequences of their actions.
Remember how Cuba opened their prisons, put their criminals in boats and shoved the boats toward Florida?
Let’s round up all these dirtbags and ship them to Iran!
RIP Lance Cpl Crutchfield. Thank you for your service.
“They took it, turned his pockets inside out, took what he had and told him since he was a Marine and didn’t have any money he didn’t deserve to live. They put the gun to his neck and shot him,”
The scum that did this should be removed from the human race. No sitting on death row for years wasting taxpayer money on useless appeal after useless appeal. End them. Now.
I sympathize, but keeping most criminals in jail forever isn’t a reasonable solution either.
One of the problems is that prisons don’t deter criminals, they breed them. The more time spent in prison, the higher the rates of recidivism. I think prison reform is as good a starting point as any for fixing the very real problems that 30 describes.
RIP Lance Cpl Crutchfield. Thank you for your service and God Bless as you return home.
I don’t recall saying forever.
I believe my arugment is that these criminals don’t even do the time they are sentenced. Good behavior? Whose brain child was that? They are criminals and if they are sentenced to 5 yrs in prison… that is what they should do.
That’s an interesting argument. I’d say liberality breeds them but I’m sure you’d disagree.
Proof. Please.
Reform huh? I’ll leave it alone… This thread isn’t about the prison system. My apologies for even bringing it up.
Here here, I agree! Of course that is if when you say prison reform, you mean getting all the tv’s out, the work out equipment, the nice cells, the internet, and all the other niceties they seem to have, than I agree. Prison is not for reform, it is for punishment. Eat oatmeal for three months straight and see how they feel. Put panties on their head . . . oh no wait, that’s torture.
RIP Lance Cpl. Crutchfield.
I hope those bastards get the death penalty.
I don’t buy that garbage that this is some “random” killing. Those scum that murdered him did so knowing that the Left has vilified our military and this war, which justified their actions.
Life is cheap when abortion is legal.
Re: Donut 44
Amen. “Prison reform” is another stupid leftis mantra which means coddling the criminal.
Rest in the arms of the Father, Lance Cpl. Robert Crutchfield, brave soldier and protector of freedom. May confort and peace reside with those you leave behind.
Land that I Love said:
Evil deeds run more rampantly when good people choose to stick their head in the sand. The marine chose to fight head-on, and so should we all, even if it’s not on the front lines. I consider people like Michelle Malkin to be just as brave, always speaking up for what she believes, in spite of those who wish she would just cower away. Never despair! You are NOT alone!
Lance Cpl. Robert Crutchfield
RIP. Thank you so much for the service to our country. Thank you from my family to yours.
It makes no difference whether you die here or in combat, you are a hero!
I wonder what made these thugs (I kinda like the term ‘goblin’ myself) feel that a U.S. Marine was fair game to murder?
Could it be the anti-military hatred put out by Code Pinko and the left?
Could it possibly be because treasonous assholes like Murtha have labeled them ‘cold blooded murderers’ on national TV and got away with it?
In the ’60s and ’70s, they spit on the soldiers when they came back. Now they murder them.
These guys might not have been anarchists or card-carrying members of some anti-war group, but the hip-hop culture has long since been very anti-authority (law enforcement, military). Anyone in a uniform is an imperialist, a racist, or a sellout. Don’t think that didn’t influence these scumbags.
There is only one sentence for these scum.
Life (however short) on Paris Island, where they will undergo boot camp, wearing pink, everyday until they drop dead.
Making them Pugil stick targets wouldn’t be a bad idea either.
Amen, Jimmy the Notable.
This is a hate crime. If I were the judge, I were a member of the jury, I would pass a hate verdict against these two animals. If I were the judge, I would hand out a hate sentence: six months forced sodomy followed by a death befitting of an infidel: beheading.
I’ll be these two subhumans are thanking their lucky stars that they live in civilized society, regardless of whether or not their actions warrant such treatment.
I want to go punch something now.
Time was that a judge would give troubled kids one last chance to straighten out by giving them a choice to go into the military or go to jail … judges no longer have that option …
Admittedly the military didn’t manage to straighten them all out … but it did get through to a large number of them …
Self-discipline, self-respect, respect for others, respect for authority … just a few of the things the military was able to instill in them that they had failed to learn in the civilian world …
Too bad that old option is off the table now …
I can think of 2 punishments that could suffice one send them to Getmo. Tell the marines there just keep them alive. Maybe give them some nice big cross tattoo’s first. Second is to remove their eyes and send them back out on to the streets, and let them be the victims for the rest of their lives. Rest in Peace Bro…..
Reintroduce H.R. 3153: Death Penalty for Cop Killers Act of 2007 with an amendment to add active duty military personnel.
If that was in response to me, I don’t think it really says anything in regards to the military. Do you really think these predators are that aware or involved enough to give two you-know-whats about politics, government, or are military that a typical random robbery and killing is a statement?
I agree with the poster above who says it was a throwaway line. They would have said the same thing had the guy been a banker, businessman, etc.
khan,
No. It was not in reference to anything you said. And no I don’t think they know or care to know anything about politics. I can only go by what the murderer said – everything else is speculation.
TheSev
Considering that Parris Island is where I did my training….. even there would be too easy a place for those punks…. hell and only hell works. Of course my brethren and I would be very pleased to arrange the travel to and the domiciling there of the scum….. heh!
These are the type of people the death penalty is reserved for.
khan,
Why is it you can see into their hearts and past their words to see it was a ‘throw away’ line?
Whoozit #78: Yes–evil persists if we say and do nothing–you are exactly correct.
Semper fi, Lance Cpl. Robert Crutchfield. Jesus has important duties for you to perform in Heaven. Your fellow vets salute you – and thanks…
Try ‘em, convict ‘em, sentence them to death……shoot ‘em both in the neck…let ‘em bleed out. I’m a firm believer the perpetrators should suffer the same fate as their victims or as close as possible.
These are the type of people best served by public execution. Heart-breaking and infuriating all at once. And people feel a need to ask why I made a choice to go armed everywhere I am legally able everyday.
He stood at the vanguard of this nation’s liberties and freedoms to be shot down in the street by the vermin our PC culture refuses to eradicate. It only serves to deepen the grief over yet another noble man lost.
30, on # 73, there was an editorial this morning in the Washington Times about a judge in MD who is well known for cutting sentences of criminals no matter how bad they are (this one had cut three different people’s throats on three different robberies) only to get out and kill a young woman who came in at 1:30 in the morning behind a trash dump at her apartment complex. The system doesn’t make sense does it? I would venture a guess these clowns could be out in 10 years if they keep their noses clean and plead guilty.
khan and englishqueen – The creep said it himself, with his own mouth that he was killing him because he was a Marine.
Why you two would argue otherwise, is just beyond me.
Disgusting.
Terrig,
That is absolutely horrifying. These judges and our elected officials do not have to live with the consequences of their actions or as far as I am concerned – inactions when dealing with criminals. The best they can come up with is giving them a second chance to hurt someone else. Rusty blamed the jails themselves for recidivism… guess we should do away with them altogether. *rolls eyes*
