Watch out for Lieberman-Warner green boondoggle bill
Senate debate starts today on the Lieberman-Warner “climate security” — AKA green boondoggle — bill. You can find the text here.
Sen. James Inhofe called it several weeks ago:
Sen. James Inhofe (R-Okla.), Ranking Member of the Environment and Public Works Committee, today commented on the Lieberman-Warner global warming cap-and-trade bill’s substitute amendment (Climate Security Act – S.2191).
“The latest version is nothing more than window dressing for a bill that has been exposed by numerous government and private analyses as costly and damaging to America,” Senator Inhofe said. “Lieberman-Warner will redistribute over $5.6 trillion from American consumers to pet congressional projects. Despite paying for the trillions of dollars mandated by this cap-and-trade scheme, American families and workers will only receive back $800 billion in consumer tax relief — $7 paid for every $1 returned.
“The fact is that the Lieberman-Warner bill is the largest pork bill ever considered by Congress. No matter how many revisions this bill undergoes, it remains a massive redistribution of wealth, the largest new tax and spend program in our Nation’s history. The handouts being offered by the sponsors of this bill come straight from the pocket of families and workers in the form of higher gas, power, and heating bills. The newly revised Lieberman-Warner bill offers nothing new except more pain at the gas pump and more expensive consumer goods.”
Sen. Inhofe’s backround and research on the bill here.
Aside: Will anyone mention the latest report on the U.N.’s massive carbon offset waste and fraud?
Entrepreneur Herman Cain minces no words in distilling the essence of the legislation:
The Lieberman-Warner bill is a cap-and-tax energy scheme, a carbon-emissions rationing program, a new tax on businesses and consumers, a new big government central agency and new career opportunities for thousands of new lobbyists specializing in greenhouse gas regulations…
… The bill also establishes the Carbon Market Efficiency Board, which shall report on the national greenhouse gas emission market and provide cost relief measures if it determines significant harm to the U.S. economy.
Give me a break!
The people who conceived and wrote this crap are obviously descendants of the same people who wrote the original tax code in 1913, the Social Security legislation in 1935, the Medicare bill of 1965 and the out-of-control prescription drug legislation of 2004.
Just look at how well all of these “the government knows best” programs are working today, and we have a good idea of where this latest giant leap for mankind will work for our grandchildren.
The Institute for Energy Research has extensive analysis of the costs of Lieberman-Warner.
Greg Mueller e-mails:
The U.S. Environmental protection Agency (EPA) analysis of the economic impacts of Lieberman-Warner assumes that carbon capture and storage (CCS) technology is deployable at scale across the entire U.S. electricity sector, and that there is a 150 percent increase in U.S. nuclear power generation by 2050. The EPA analysis also assumes that the U.S. complies with the Kyoto Protocol, which it currently does not.
Based on those assumptions, EPA concludes that Warner-Lieberman would result in annual reductions of U.S. gross domestic product (GDP) ranging from $238 billion to $983 billion in 2030, and from roughly $1 trillion to more than $2.8 trillion in 2050; gasoline prices would increase by $0.53 per gallon in 2030 to $1.40 per gallon in 2050; and electricity prices are projected to increase 44 percent in 2030 and 26 percent in 2050.
The full EPA report is here.
What’s John McCain’s position?
Lieberman told the WSJ: “I’m confident in the end he’ll vote for it.”
But he won’t vote on it today. He’s going to miss the procedural vote on whether to move forward with the bill:
“I’m confident in the end he’ll vote for it,” Sen. Lieberman said.
Sen. McCain’s position on the climate-change bill is being closely watched by both opponents and supporters of the measure, partly because of his new role as the Republican Party’s presumptive presidential nominee and because of his efforts to distance himself on the issue from President Bush. Although the senator told an audience in Oregon this month that “the facts of global warming demand our urgent attention, especially in Washington,” he told reporters this week that he doesn’t actually plan to attend Monday’s procedural vote on whether to go forward on a debate of the bill. That means he may not have to take a position on the measure; if enough opponents of the bill vote to cut off debate on Monday, the measure could die a quick death.
Call your non-AWOL senators:
202-224-3121.

NYT:
Republicans are actually pleased the legislation is coming to the floor at the moment, because they think it will given them a platform to talk about how emissions curbs will drive up already soaring energy costs. Conversely, some Democrats are far from thrilled.
The debate is likely to consume much of the week if not longer and should showcase a bit of presidential theater since all three presidential contenders are expected to be on hand at some point. It is also one of the issues where Senator John McCain has broken with some of his Republican colleagues in pressing for emissions curbs.

climate security….love these euphamisms!
euphemisms…jeez.
Here’s a thought: just keep our emissions low and sell/give our emissions technology to the emerging countries like India and China.
Democrats have to get off the “America is rich and we can afford to pay for the world’s ills” mentality. They can benefit from our technology, which we have already spent trillions to develop. THAT’S our investment in the world.
What difference does it make if we go from 95% clean to 98% clean (spending more money to do so than it took to get to 95% clean) while China just scoffs at any emission and pollution controls?
It should be obvious to even the most oblivious Obama voter that more than a billion people with dirty technology will trump the efforts at cleaning by a small fraction of that population in the U.S. No doubt I presume too much.
If Lieberman, Warner, the Sierra Club etc. want to really reduce pollution in the world, then they should go where they will do the most good: China.
It will be fun to watch.
“I’m confident in the end he’ll vote for it.”
Well Juan McAmnesty worked with Lieberman on a $.50/gallon tax on gas to fight man-made global warming. Thus, I’m sure he will vote for it.
Yet, another reason not to support him.
I’m not sure whether to scream or puke! Infuriating and gut-wrenching. There is no place for the snivelling, green Congressmen and this climate change ‘hoodwink’ in our guarantee of life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness.
My senators are definetely AWOL. I unequivocally fall into the category of taxation without representation. Senators Lautenberg and Menendez do not listen to their constituents… unless, of course, you agree with them.

Here I go vasillating again between whether or not to vote for McCain.
We’re Screwed ‘08.
Where does it end?
I’m screwed as well. One of my Senators is Harry Reid.
Here’s an editorial from this A.M.’s Las Vegas Review-Journal:
Hang on to your wallets, folks.
Hopefully, we can count on the petty nature of democrats to not support a bill proposed by Lieberman.
This is what we get when people vote for politicians like it’s a high school popularity contest. Nice people are elected who turn out to be jerks that steal your lunch money. Full-time, career politicians are like a cancer to our freedoms.
Yep, no doubt about it-we’re screwed.
I’ve written and called my Senators. . . not that I expect any serious consideration of my views.
Bob Casey is a monkey on a leash for Harry Reid and Arlen is too busy looking thru the Patriots’ video tape vault.
The liberals see their chance now. They’ve been winning the small battles in this “insurgency of ideas.” They’ve been able to convince us that some laws are negotiable, hence negating the principle of “rule of law” (viz. immigration law, Logan Act, treason, etc.) They’ve been able to legislate without the legislature (viz. homosexual marriage, Global Warming as a reason to protect animals), and enforce fines without any judicial review or trial by jury. They’ve been able to convince us that property rights have no real meaning because of eminent domain. Now that they see they’ve accomplished this without much fuss, they’re going for the gold in terms of truly bringing socialism to the U.S.
I suppose this wasn’t too difficult. After all, how many people read books or study current events in a way other than watching 30-second clips on the news?
G-D please let it come to the floor!!! If there was ever a right time for a ENVIRO-WACKO bill it is now…Class envy and BIG BROTHER LIBS ARE ALREADY AT IT BIG TIME.. Heard a guy on radio the other day, got a sticker on his SUBURBAN. “HEY GASHOLE time to get rid of YOUR SUV!!! This AM in my local RAG, letter to editor, TIME FOR 55 MPH SPEED LIMIT… YEP, the IDIOTS are running lose!!!
Send_Me,
It doesn’t help that we have “AWOL senators” on the Republican side who have embraced the “reach across the aisle” mentality. The Dems have about 65% of the blame, the remainder lies with the RINOs.
Despite our pleas Dems and RINOs alike are marching full steam ahead on this climate change debacle and it’s going to cost us – BIG.
There’s a consensus, people!
This kind of group thinking gives me chills. In the very near future, the government will make all our decisions and we can just concentrate on being happy and caring for the planet and paying our fair share. Unfortunately, it probably won’t happen for me until after the Soma kicks in.
Sens Coleman and Klobochar seem to support this piece of crap……. MN leads the way in being sheeple.
Anybody who thinks McCain is for limited government is nuts. He has already committed to this unconstitutional mandate to subject citizens to the whims of the government.
I’m pretty much screwed with at least one of my sentators. Lamar Alexander fancies himself an environmentalist. As for Bob Corker, I’m not sure just how he will go on it. But, I’m not holding out a lot of hope on his part either.
Yes. It was said correctly earlier, “taxation without representation.”
Hey #6, you think you are screwed. I’m from SOUTHERN ILLINOIS. Not Chicago, not Springfield, SOUTHERN ILLINOIS. We are getting it from the feds and the state. Obamessia and Idiot Govenor.
I’ve called both my senators and voiced my opposition but I’m not holding my breath (Kohl (D) WI and Feingold (D) WI)
Of course, at least they’ll be voting.
swmbo,
I would not want to be you right now.:-)
Hey, I’ve got Feinstein and Boxer and Pelosi here in CA. I’ve been screwed since I was born.
Thank you Silver, it is a very frustrating place to be. And I forgot to mention Durbin, he is a class all his own. YIKES, Illinois is doomed.
Yep I am screwed on this one too. I am from WA so we have Patty Murray and Maria Cant(do)Well representing us.
There I needed to fix that.
I have absolutely no doubt that the “grumpy old man” will vote for this fascist bill that will destroy the American economy and significantly damage the economies of all countries in the Western World. Too many in Congress have drunk deep of the Gorebal Warming Kool-Aid and are ready to run like lemmings over the cliff of political correctness on the foundations of this Junk Science.
I will write and call my Congress critters, but have very little faith in Congressman Simpson (cross the aisle on S-CHIP) or Senator Craig (give them all amnesty) in doing the right thing to fight this disaster in the making. They continue to disappoint me and I am still a little irritated with Senator Crapo for his complicity in the pork laden Farm bill otherwise he is fairly reliable to vote against this type of insanity. The only one I have seen some real backbone and conservative values in is Congressman Sali and I am not in his district all though he is receptive to all Idaho residents. If this passes into law it will probably cause such grave damage to our economy it will make the Great Depression look like the good old days.
I would say there is a good chance that McCain will vote for whatever Lieberman trots out there since McCain just got done practically phelating Leiberman after being introduced at the AIPAC this morning where Lieberman was present.
Oh, No!! Man, I’m in trouble now. I’m even scared to walk out my door. Those Chicken Little-Climate Changing-Greenies are surely going to get me. I know they’re out there somewhere just waiting to cut me down.
Seems that due to my carbon footprint—but wait a minute, that bald lady in Star Trek said I was a carbon-based unit so what else am I supposed to leave behind? —Well, anyway, seems all my carbon is causing problems on Jupiter now too. Due to climate changes on Jupiter two more Big Red Spots have appeared.
I’m sorry, I really am! Maybe it’s not to late to switch sides.
What bothers me is that there’s no discussion of whether reducing C02 is needed or not. Man made climate change should be proven beyond a doubt before wrecking our economy.
On the bright side, liberal politicians are dreaming if they think there will be no repercussions for passing this boobdoggle. People are angry about energy costs and are going to take it out on incumbents.
On a related note, Lexington has been given the nod as the city with the worst carbon footprint. We’re number 1!! W00t!!
Has anyone read State of Fear by Michael Crichton? It gets a little heavy on the stats at times, but it’s a good overall summation of the “other side” of the story. I would love to require a book report on it from all the congress critters.
One must admit, the GLOBAL conspiracy to make us believe WE are at fault for rising temperatures (which no one can actually prove) is working.
Great politics. Create an issue that doesn’t exist, make it a moral imperative and attack anyone who opposes you. (Didn’t the Dems invent that?) This isn’t just in the US. In the UK, anyone who isn’t “climate friendly” is vilified in the press. The Brits use words very carefully. It is not called “Global Warming” there. It is always referred to as “Climate Change” thus taking away any silly references to reality because the climate “changes” every day.
The bottom line, however, is taxes. Whenever a group or person decides that a tax will stop God (or Mother Earth – take your pick Lefty) from changing his (or her) creation, the real threat has been exposed. The Euro/Brits have been screaming about taxes (not on themselves) to “stop” or “combat” Climate Change for the last 10 years. Before Poland joined the EU, the Brits and Brussels hammered the Poles for thier polluting coal fired electric plants. Now they are working on a soulution.. hmmmmmm. I can hear the sould of Euro income taxes rising.
The idea of the US changing the way we live because of some trumped up Euro/Moral (note the oxymoron) imperetive is asinine. The US is the greatest place on Earth because we decided NOT to be like Europe. It was that decision a couple of Centuries ago that made us what we are.
I have a 1970 Chevy Truck in South Georgia. I will go back there soon and put in a $50 bill woth of low test and smoke it up.. Choke on that one.
30,
I feel your pain. I too have to deal with these two NJ turds. I’m going to call anyway.
You know all these green companies, with their save the world philosophy, sure do make one hell of a profit, from the fear of the unknown and quasi-studied. Even the Sierra Club is on the ball mixing with Clorox.
The Sierra Club Foundation is tax exempt under Section 501(c)(3) of the Internal Revenue Code.
So how are they selling bleach with Clorox?
JT, More power to ya. I’ll call and write… it won’t change a thing though.
Won’t do me any good at all to call my Senators. Murrey and Cantwell are both flaming Libs. They have never responded to a single E Mail, Post card or phone call to The Hill. I think I only exist to pay the taxes they impose. Like a GOOD surfe………..
I’ve got Feinstein and Boxer
Isn’t Warner a Republican?
War Horse Party – any-one?
I’ve called my senators. Here in Utah, a have some hope that Hatch and Bennett will vote against this abominable bill. The sad thing is that so many people I know have little knowledge about this or even care enough to act this much.
I feel your pain. As a fellow Illinoisian, this may interest you… http://www.sauerbergforussenate.com
http://www.moveondickdurbin.org/
Pork and watermelon. Mmmmm.
The proper question is what is Schumer’s position? What is Reid’s position? What is Durbin’s position?
Malkin continues to believe that weeding out Republicans is the way to stop Democrats (Malkin= great marketer; HORRIBLE, CLUELESS political strategist).
How long before Illinois is bancrupt because of its 45 billion dollar pension commitment that is unfunded? Teachers have not paid into social security because of this pension. They are drawing up to 80,000 dollars each year upon retiring at 55.
I have already called both of my hopeless PA Senators. They are so off the mark on so many issues, I’ve taken to calling them at least once a week, just so they know someone is following what the h they are doing.
Lieberman-Warner, such a couple of numnuts.
Last night the Illinois state budget finally passed, only problem is, they have no idea where the money to fund it will come from. Retirement fund is empty. Sure wish someone from below Springfield would win the Govenorship, but that will never happen as long as dead people vote and vote often in Chicago.
Anyone wonder why we have not seen any major terror attacks since 9-11? They don’t need to it would be counterproductive to their cause. Congress has become more dangerous than the islamists a true enemy of the American people and the islamists know it. Why get in the way of a man who is committing suicide there’s no need for it. They are literally trying to steal food out of our mouths, they want to legalize millions of new carbon units some people are going to have to go without well where do you think the cutbacks will come from? YOU and YOURS. What they really want is to turn the whole country into one gigantic airport security line.
I have watched events occur polices enacted enemies redefined since 9-11 and early on I tried to remind people that those who would trade liberty for security deserve neither but people called me an alarmist. Well the American people are having their choices made for them and the neat trick is we will be paying for their security as they proceed to turn the country in to a totalitarian state. Its time to really fight back, refuse to participate in the duties of good citizens, civic disobedience in every arena. When government becomes the enemy of the people they govern every honorable person has an obligation to resist it. Isn’t it obvious to even the most naive that our country is slowly being murdered one small step at a time as many so called Americans stand there sucking their thumbs? Its really sad to watch, this race backwards but I suppose our country has become a measure of her people.
Right now I am watching to see if any state will fight back I will sell my house and move there. I am looking for a state that wants patriotic Americans to contribute to their future success. These states will survive the future, free and with the pursuit of life liberty and happiness intact. Make sure you don’t find yourself outside of one of these yet to be revealed bastions of American freedom when the @#$% starts hitting the fan.
“Directs the Administrator to establish an international reserve allowance program. Requires the proceeds from sales of such allowances to be used to mitigate the negative impacts of climate change on other countries’ disadvantaged communities.” Are you bleeping kidding me?
The GOP needs to adopt a “drill everywhere now” policy fast or go the way of the Tories and their green platform.
It shouldn’t surprise anyone that the politicians will soak Americans for all they can get, under the guise of global warming and the environment. It’s all about power and money and not about the “planet earth”. Of course there are many people, all over this country, who will gladly fork over their money, being the gullible, naive people that they are. The Washington bureaucrats are counting on it.
Senator Corker in TN has apparently bought into the premise of Gullible Warming, too – he’s proposing a better cap and trade scheme! How progressive!
I guess he’s not a conservative, either. Sigh…
But I’ll be damned if I’ll vote for another wolf in sheep’s clothing. Are you listening, McCain?
This is the issue that might decide it for me. If McCain supports this travesty then I am officially voting for third party. If he doesn’t, he has a chance to earn my vote.
As an environmental scientist I understand the monstrous changes proposed in S. 2191. The 4% to 10% reductions in our GDP are probably on the hopeful side.
The graphic at this
WEBSITE is illustrative of the massive government reorganization of our economy.
This bill would make lousy policy.
However, why is the Senate taking up this certain-to-be-vetoed bill when the military is about to run out of money because Congress won’t pass a decent, clean war supplemental measure? Warped priorities.
We need ONE senator to stand up and show SOLID PHYSICAL EVIDENCE that global warming STOPPED ten years ago while CO2 continued to rise another ~15PPM and that that is DIRECTLY OPPOSITE to the IPCC models predicting a .3C rise. The only conclusion a SANE person can make is that models are WRONG! (How wrong – no one knows …)
No smoke and mirrors, here it is –
http://icecap.us/images/uploads/MonthlyCO2vsTemps.jpg
Isn’t that alone enough to shake some sense into these people that just ~maybe~ they’re making a HUGE mistake listening to Al Gore?
sent this (by FAX- best way)to the Senators in my state:
Please VOTE NO on Senate Bill 2191!! It will NOT SOLVE the ENERGY PROBLEM and will make our GAS BILL GO UP IN PRICE!! DO SOMETHING FOR THE ECONOMY – DRILL IN ALASKA- DRILL FOR OIL and ALSO BUILD REFINERIES!!!! KEEP CHINA AWAY FROM OUR DRILLING AREAS OFFSHORE.
DON’T let the Environmental Nazis take over our country!!
