Scroll down for updates…Pflger has been temporarily suspended from the St. Sabina church, reports CBS 2 in Chicago….to “reflect on his recent statements”…

***
Say it with me: Boo-freaking-hoo. Via the Chicago Sun-Times’ Cathleen Falsani:

Pfleger has apologized for “the words that I chose” and for “my dramatization.” Pfleger told me he called the Clinton campaign to apologize directly but had not heard back from Clinton or her representatives.

All that is well and good, but how, as a friend and passionate supporter of Obama’s campaign for president, could he do what he did, with cameras rolling?

Pfleger’s short answer? He didn’t think the service and his “conversation” — a more casual address than a classic sermon, he explained — were being broadcast live online, as Trinity often does.

“They told me it was down,” Pfleger said. “Their live streaming had been down all day, and they didn’t know whether it was back up. . . . I regret the dramatization that I was naive enough to believe was just going to be kept among that church.”

Even Falsani couldn’t stomach Pfleger’s self-sorrow:

It’s a rare occasion when Pfleger and I find ourselves at a loss for words.

Pfleger’s about as cowed as I’ve ever seen him. He’s reeling, really, from what he admits is a difficult predicament of his own making. Over the weekend, he said that the days since his Trinity address had been the most difficult of his life, even more painful than when his foster son Jarvis was gunned down near St. Sabina on May 30, 1998.

I’ve spoken to Pfleger many times about Jarvis’ death and couldn’t believe he said this. It sounded like the worst kind of narcissism, and I told him so.

Pull out the victim card in 3, 2, 1…

“This is a dangerous time in America, the freest country in the world,” Pfleger says, “where you have to whisper your thoughts.”

Via CBS 2 in Chicago:

CBS 2 News has learned that Francis Cardinal George is temporarily removing Father Michael Pfleger from his position as pastor of St. Sabina Roman Catholic Church on Chicago’s South Side.

CBS 2 Chief Correspondent Jay Levine reports the move comes after several days of deliberation and consultation by the Cardinal, who first learned about Pfleger’s racially charged comments about Sen. Barack Obama and Hillary Clinton from the pulpit of Trinity Unity Church of Christ last Thursday night.

The Cardinal immediately contacted Pfleger who agreed not to refer to the presidential candidates by name, but as CBS 2 reported at the time, there remained the possibility of some further disciplinary action against Pfleger.

The Cardinal reportedly spoke to Pfleger again this morning.

A spokesman for the archdiocese would neither confirm nor deny action had been taken to remove Pfleger. Another spokesman said she expected to have some announcement later today.

Karl at Protein Wisdom: “Perhaps he can take that time to reflect on his sickness of the soul that considers the political embarrassment of the past few days as even more painful than when his foster son Jarvis was gunned down near St. Sabina on May 30, 1998. Given his track record, it seems unlikely.”

More from the Sun-Times.

Guess the Cardinal found some balls.

Which wouldn’t be a bad thing. It may finally give the diocese grounds to remove him from the priesthood.

I agree with you, Terrig. This man isn’t worthy of being a Catholic priest. My husband, who is Catholic, has told me he has never seen a Catholic priest act the way Pleger has. I would say that the Chicago Archdiocese either has a lot of problems with renegade priests who don’t know the difference between ministering to the faithful and peddling hate or it’s got a wacked out sense of who/what is a worthy candidate for the priesthood.

Suspension is too good for Pfleger. He is an embarassment to the Catholic Church and Catholics everwhere. Too bad it doesn’t take much these days to embarass the Catholic Church.

In our diocese a few years ago we had a renegade priest (who was performing ceremonies for gay unions in his parish and “ordaining” women among other things).

The bishop explained very charitably but firmly why it needed to stop immediately, and admit the woman was not a priest and the gays were not really “married.” The priest and church, instead of admitting its error, disobediently and pridefully screeched to all the local and national media who would listen: they called it “speaking our truth” (gag).

Eventually the priest was excommunicated and the parish is now a Protestant denomination. So renegade priests CAN be dealt with if the bishop has the spine to do it.

Nah – you dont have to whisper your thoughts, Foddah – just be prepared to be held accountable for what you say. And one other thing, Foddah – because of people like you and Obama, we are fast heading away from being the freest country in the world. Be thankful. It wasnt the government that came after you to stand you against a wall with a blindfold and a cigarette.
Btw – I hope nobody here takes offense at how I use “father.” I just like the way Jimmy Cagney said it in his movies.

I’m sure that if Fr. Pfleger were celebrating invalid sacraments and calling them valid he’d be excommunicated too. Fr. Pfleger and the priest you mentioned are renegades in totally different senses. One of them was celebrating totally fake sacraments, and the other is violating a pretty recent principle against political entanglement. One can only be excommunicated, the other just needs to learn not to talk politics. The amount of spine the Bishop has is irrelevant.

What a lame a$$ excuse.

I guess it is okay if you keep the hate-filled diatribe and the churches violations of political activities amongst the like-minded folks of the congregation during the sermon and don’t share it with those people that might be offended by the use of a pulpit for political purposes.

This is a nasty, mean-spirited clown of a so-called priest who should have been fired long ago. He’s enough to put a person off religion for life.

Don’t the black people in that congregation see that he is mocking them by condescendingly mimicking their accent and physical antics?

Isn’t it scary that the congregation yells with agreement with every racist slur that the fool priest throws out?

As for racisim, the man is an idiot. Obama is where he is today mainly because of white voters. This may not have been the case if the real Obama had been exposed before winning those 11 states in a row, but it shows the people were prepared to give him a chance.

Yes, Ms. Ignorant Behar from the silly show The View, (which I don’t watch but catch the salient clips on Fox), it is possible for a minority group to be racist. It’s right there in front of your eyes. I lived in the south for many years, and moved away because of the hatred and racism towards whites.
