Drive a stake through the heart of the green boondoggle bill; Update: Blocked! 12 short, 48-36

Scroll down for updates…Bill is killed for now; Dems fall 12 votes short

Good news: The Lieberman–Warner eco-boondoggle is set to go down in flames today. But this is no time to rest. While the massive tax hike/green slush fund bill will most likely be shelved, it’ll come back sooner or later. And when it does, keep your eyes on “moderate” Republicans such as John Sununu who will try to appease their red-faced greenie donors and lobbyists by pulling a “for it before I was against it maneuver” this morning a la John Kerry.

As for the presumptive presidential candidates and the hanger-on, none of them are expected to show up today to vote.

It’s leadership we can believe in!

Snort.

CQ reports:

After a week of partisan squabbling and parliamentary maneuvering, the chamber will vote Friday morning on a motion to invoke cloture and limit debate on a substitute amendment by Barbara Boxer , D-Calif., chairwoman of the Environment and Public Works Committee. If, as expected, the motion does not get the required 60 votes, the bill is unlikely to come up on the floor again this Congress.

“We really didn’t expect to have such a truncated debate,” said Boxer. “We are working colleague to colleague to see how many votes we have to stop the filibuster.”

Supporters of the bill had hoped the Senate would begin to lay the political groundwork for action under the next presidential administration. But the unrelated fight over judges halted floor discussion on the legislation only two days after it began.

With both parties accusing the other of obstruction, it is unclear if either of them stands to reap a political gain. “I don’t think either side came off well, politically. Dysfunction doesn’t serve either party’s interest,” said Paul Bledsoe, a spokesman for the National Commission on Energy Policy.

A spokeswoman for Majority Leader Harry Reid , D-Nev., said if the cloture motion does fail, there is a possibility the Senate could take it up again. The bill would be placed back on the calendar after Friday’s vote. However, Majority Whip Richard J. Durbin , D-Ill., said it was “not likely” that the Senate would revisit the bill.

Me, and my friend McCain, see eye-to-eye on the most important issue of the day…I’ll leave to you, to decide what that is.

As far as *I’M* concerned, all the other issues added together, are no more than a fart in the wind.

At the expense of being redundant, I for one would love to know (exactly) what you think the most important issue of the day is…color me curious.

    Khan,

Reading Frankie’s posts over many weeks, it became clear early on that Frankie’s a hypocrite. He moves goal posts, avoid facts that don’t show his points in a good light, even ignores posts when someone calls his bluff & points out his lack of character.

To speak in a civil manner to such is a waste. Indeed, worse than a waste: it is to repeat the error committed by the Republican-majority government we’ve had. They would try sweet reason & facts, then would “be nice” & compromise — hoping that if their political enemies didn’t feel threatened they’d see the light.

Foy! The only thing these hypocrites rate is derision. Its the same reason no one takes “flat earth” seriously.

Thats why he doesn’t rate disgust. He’s just out for his points.

I just had always throught of Spectre, Graham, Martinez, and the two Maine babes as RINOs, with McCain, Hagel and Sununu as borderline RINOs. I had never considered Dole as a RINO, but she voted like one today, anyway. Of course, the defeated Rhode Island solon that ran on his father’s name, Lincoln Chaffee, was the model RINO, and after losing, he immediately switched party affiliations and explained he always sympathized with the Democrats but thought he could better obstruct the Republicans as a sub-committee chair. On that basis, Jumpin’ Jim Jeffords, who took GOP campaign money then immediately switched sides, is practically a model of integrity.

There are shades of difference between old style Democrats, who favored some socialism, and generally supported capitalism, but were somewhat suspicious of sucessful capitalists, and full out Marxists, like most of the current Democrats.

If you haven’t already, read about Henry Wallace, FDR’s Ag Secretary who visited the USSR and fell in love with Stalin, and was FDR’s VP for four years, until party big wigs pressured FDR to pick Truman instead, because of Wallace’s embrace of communism. He broke from the Dems in 1948 to challenge Truman as an openly pro-Soviet “Progressive”, and lost badly, and rejoined the party. Among his campaign volunteers was George McGovern. The 1950s through early 1970s saw a battle in the Democrat Party between the patriots and the pro-Soviets, with the communists in control by 1972. The Chicago convention riots was part of the battle.

Bill Bennett, Jeane Kirkpatrick and Ronald Reagan were all Democrats once, but left the party when it became clear the party was falling into the control of the USSR. The USSR has fallen, but the people sympathetic to its goals now control a major US political party.

Mr. Khan, we’ll have to agree to disagree, McCain is an old style Democrat, prone to engage in some class envy babble, but he isn’t Obama.

Again, I’d use the analogy of coughing up blood. If it is caused by tuberculosis, it is a serious and unpleasant disease, but long term doses of antibiotics will likely eventually control it, as compared to metasticized lung cancer, which will kill.

McCain is like tuberculosis, and Obama is advanced lung cancer.

It ain’t his hat he’s talking through. It doesn’t bode well either way, that (a) he doesn’t understand or know the meaning of “progressive” as we know it, or (b) he DOES know exactly what it means and doesn’t give a rip what we know or think.

He’s giving further signals that continue to make conservatives uncomfortable or downright afraid of him.

It seems he just wants to run to feed his ego and destroy the Republican party.

If he wants “progressive” he should just campaign for Obama.

Oh, wait. That’s what he IS doing, covertly.

The same country whose media, teachers, politicians, and legal systems seek to exterminate knowledge of right and wrong and diminish religion. The liberals have attacked the heart, mind, and soul of this Nation. Look for a very strong push soon for a total gun ban before the deterioration of this formerly great nation begins to stink like BO, and people rise up to force those who are guilty out of power. The Dems know a counter-revolution is coming. Watch them unleash a crime wave upon the middle class by emptying the prisons and continuing to undermine justice in the courts. An attack on freedom of speech and of the press is already well underway – BO will do everything possible to silence his critics.
It is fortunate that so many Dem leaders are elderly and will pass soon naturally.

If you have been voting for liberal Dems don’t complain about gas prices!
    This from Powerline

Who’s to Blame for High Gas Prices?

For several decades, the Democratic Party has pursued policies designed to drive up the cost of petroleum, and therefore gas at the pump. Remarkably, the Democrats don’t seem to have taken much of a political hit from the current spike in gas prices. Probably that’s because most people don’t realize how different the two parties’ energy policies have been.

Congressman Roy Blunt put together these data to highlight the differences between House Republicans and House Democrats on energy policy:

ANWR Exploration House Republicans: 91% Supported House Democrats: 86% Opposed

    Coal-to-Liquid
    House Republicans: 97% Supported
    House Democrats: 78% Opposed

    Oil Shale Exploration
    House Republicans: 90% Supported
    House Democrats: 86% Opposed

    Outer Continental Shelf (OCS) Exploration
    House Republicans: 81% Supported
    House Democrats: 83% Opposed

    Refinery Increased Capacity
    House Republicans: 97% Supported
    House Democrats: 96% Opposed

    SUMMARY

91% of House Republicans have historically voted to increase the production of American-made oil and gas.

86% of House Democrats have historically voted against increasing the production of American-made oil and gas.

PAUL adds: It’s useful to keep this sort of thing in mind when we hear (on something like a daily basis these days) that the Republicans have run out of ideas or that Republican ideas didn’t work. The truth is that most major Republican ideas weren’t tried because the Democrats blocked them. Increasing the domestic production of oil and gas (a move so obvious it barely meets the standard for being an idea) is hardly the only example. Social security reform and school choice also come quickly to mind. Republican-backed policies for increasing the number of Americans with health insurance were also blocked by Democrats. And so forth.
