Hillary exits, the PUMAs roar

By Michelle Malkin  •  June 7, 2008 10:56 AM

Scroll down for updates…12:31pm Eastern Still a no-show. C-SPAN says she’s running upwards of an hour late. Hmmmm…Allahpundit’s got all the latest at Hot Air…

Hillary’s giving her concession speech today at noon. Her campaign will run the full statement on her website. You’ll be able to find it everywhere else on TV and the Internet, too. But if you view it at hillaryclinton.com, you’ll get something extra special: A bombardment of donation requests. She’s buried in debt–now at $30 million– and begging for cash.

Today, Hillary puts her nice mask on. Via USA Today:

In today’s speech, Clinton is poised to do what she didn’t in remarks at a rally in New York Tuesday after the final two primaries, lavishing praise on the victor and vowing to back him fully.

Since he swept the opening Iowa caucuses in January, they have battled to a near draw through more than 50 contests. It ended Tuesday with the South Dakota and Montana contests, which sent him over the 2,118 mark in delegates. That’s the number needed to be nominated at the party’s national convention in Denver in August.

He will be the first African-American nominated by a major party for the presidency. She would have been the first woman.

Obama said he was taking the weekend off in Chicago. Before meeting with Clinton late Thursday, after a campaign rally in northern Virginia that drew 10,000, he told reporters, “There will be a time and place when she and I will appear together.”

In a fundraising appeal, campaign manager Maggie Williams said Clinton would use today’s event “to thank all of her supporters, to express her support for Senator Obama, and to talk about the issues that have been at the core of her public service, the issues she will continue fighting for.”

Clinton hosted a thank-you reception Friday for campaign staff workers, who trouped past reporters and photographers to her home in Northwest Washington.

It was in the sunroom of that house that she taped the video launching her campaign. “Let the conversation begin,” she said then. “I have a feeling it’s going to be very interesting.”

How are Hillary’s female voters feeling? Try bitter and clingy:

“It makes us feel schizophrenic,” said Martha Burk, immediate past chair of the National Council of Women’s Organizations. “For the first time in history, we can see that a woman can and will be president,” she said. But the campaign, which Burk and many other feminists said was riddled with sexist attacks in the media, “exposed barriers that we thought we had overcome years ago,” she said.

Legions of Clinton’s female supporters, especially older women who lived through the struggles of the second wave of feminism in the ’60s and ’70s, are expected to show up today at Clinton’s concession speech at noon in Washington. And many are not prepared to concede her loss, presenting Obama with an added challenge of winning over ardent female Clinton backers he will probably need to capture the presidency.

Hundreds of women have logged onto Clinton’s campaign website, with many insisting they will not vote for “that man” – Obama – and urging Clinton to run as an independent or challenge Obama’s nomination at the August convention in Denver. Many on the website pledged to vote for Senator John McCain of Arizona, the presumptive GOP nominee.

Other websites have sprung up to denounce Democrats for picking Obama. One – called PUMA, an acronym for the sentiment “Party Unity My Ass” – features postings by Clinton supporters saying they will never vote for Obama, even if it means electing McCain.

Can the PUMAs and the Bitter Wimmin Brigade be tamed and appeased?

Hear them roar.

I find it the ultimate in irony that Hillary, who rode to national prominence on her husband’s coattails and sexual out-of-office proclivities would scream “sexism”. She wasn’t nominated because, in addition to running a clueless campaign (management skills, anyone?) a majority of the Democratic Party found her to be a dishonest and generally nasty person. Women should hold off hollering “sexism” until a REALLY qualified female candidate runs.

Wasn’t she touting over $250 million raised a year ago? That’s a lot of cash. If a good portion of that goes to media expenses, perhaps “Big Media” is price gouging and needs to be investigated. Hell, as a little guy, I can’t even afford one second of national media time.

This also makes Hillary’s “I want to take the oil company’s profits” statement ridiculous. She can’t even manage $250 million over 12 months!

    Congressional investigation any one?

The caption, read I believe, ‘See you in November’. One can only hope for the same this year.

This primary has produced more comedy than I thought could be possible. The Dems are up to their necks is a quagmire of their own creation. Winner take all would have changed this dramatically. For the 3rd time in history, women have watched as race trumped gender. Telling this 51% of the population to suck-up and deal with this reality has caused a tipping point. Everone is forgetting that “woman scorned” thing. I don’t believe that the women who wanted to see a woman as POTUS will be interested in party unnity when the party has shafted them in much the same way they have always treated by society. I am willing to wait for a Margaret Thatcher type of woman to be president. In the meantime, I do think the Dems should be punished for the “we know what’s best for you attitude”. While, none of the candidates have been particularly inteneresting, this election should remind all elected officials, regardless of party, that they work for US, are responsible to US and can be removed by US. Failing to learn this lesson may make it difficult for them to serve their own interests by remaining in office.

It is also a good way to let Fascism win. There are good people in the House and Senate, state and local offices we need to retain. There are bad people in those same offices we need to fight, especially RINOs.

Don’t let the evil and corrupt drive out the good and honest. Even the best will stumble sometimes but keep the faith. Our forefathers had a lot harder fight than we to make this country. Then he better invest in some extra security or he may be the first President in history to end up accidentally falling down the stairs with a knife in his back with two gun shot wounds in the back of the head (can anyone say Arkancide?) after drowning in the bath tub when an electrical device accidentally falls in. As others have said a food taster wouldn’t be a bad idea either. ;)

Senator Clinton…the Obama bus is here…time to get under it…

I didn’t agree with her politics, and I considered her a crooked as any Arkansas politician, but at least she ain’t no made up saviour with a slick speech and not much else.

Obama is outright beguiling the nation and will win this election on nothing but empty smooth talk. Get him in office & our nation will be truely screwed.

Put him in a actual crisis decision situation, and he’ll do what? He’ll make a knee-tingling speech? He’ll say “hope & change” and women will faint?

If troops are dying and he is faced with that “3AM phone call”, what will he do? Fall back on a old story of a Uncle who did something somewhere, at least as how he understood what he had heard?

I don’t quite agree, but I get what you’re saying. Ralph Nader has been arguing this point for years.

I am very torn on this Hillary for VP issue. Weeks ago, I was thinking hell eff’ No!!! to the whole concept. However, if Obama can’t get two outta of three in the Mich, PA, OH triangle and late summer polling suggest Hillary will help, then he has to strongly consider her. I also think women will come out to put Hillary in as the first V.P. It’s not the full enchilada, but it would still be historically significant for women that believe in her.
On the other hand, Hillary brings Bill and the 90’s with her. Fox News and conservative pundits have been kissing her butt for the past couple of months, because they wanted to stop Obama and or prolong the race. It was hilarious watching people like Hannity twist themselves to defend her on issues like the flippin Michigan primary….total bizarro world stuff. That would change with Hillary on the ticket, and all of her flipflops and scandals would be running right along side the Wright/Pleigher stuff on a nightly basis. Then there’s the problem of Bill with his past, his temper and his big mouth. I agree with the poster who suggested he looks and behaves like he’s on the sauce.
I don’t believe Obama would lose any of his base with Hillary on the ticket, but it could prove harder to get the moderates and independents back. I do think Obama would get a boost in his support from women, but not poor, uneducated whites in rural areas, who simply would not vote for Obama under any circumstance due to his race, his church, his name, stupid muslim suspicions, and claims of elitism.
I guess I’m pondering whether or not Obama would get enough democratic leaning, but not beholden, women, to make up for the independent/moderate men who hate Hillary with a passion. It’s a tough balancing act. I’m leaning toward leaving her off, but I wouldn’t make a firm decision until early August after watching the polls and generally testing the scene overall.
Lastly, if New York is in play in any fashion where Obama would have to spend some cash there, he HAS to put Hillary on the ticket.

This is complicated stuff. I wouldn’t decide until August at the earliest.

    Have a good day.

Something more fun, that the MSM ignores. The Republicans have such higher quality female role models. I cringe everytime I hear a patronizing John McCain say he’s thankful for HRC on behalf of his 3 daughters blah, blah.

    Carly Fiorina
(former HP CEO, okay not without controversy, but still successful on her own merit, not her husband’s), McCain’s fundraising chair who is getting ready to start holding Town Hall’s with small business owners (brilliant!)

    Meg Whitman
-former eBay CEO (who doesn’t love eBay?) on McCain’s team via the Romney campaign. I’ve written about her before, very impressive. Her husband is a neurosurgeon, so once again a woman who didn’t get her achievements via her husband.

And of course the existing Administration: Condi
Who would never be found saying “For the first time in my adult lifetime, I’m proud of my country.”

There are probably others I’ve left out.

Can’t see that happening in ‘08 for the same reason it didn’t happen in ‘84: the overarching weakness of the man at the top of the ticket.

I do think Obama would get a boost in his support from women, but not poor, uneducated whites in rural areas, who simply would not vote for Obama under any circumstance due to his race, his church, his name, stupid muslim suspicions, and claims of elitism.

That statement smacks of racism. I’ll bet you any amount of money that the votes of poor, uneducated whites (urban or rural) will be more equally distributed between the parties than the votes of their black counterparts.

In my last post, I fear that it looked like I was talking in absolutes. My thoughts on the voting trends aren’t an exact science, and of course there will be exceptions. I’m am generalizing based on the voting trends in the primaries, but things could obviously change a lot in 4-5 months. Will Obama be able to get support from the 40 some odd percent of female Hillary supporters who claim they will stay home or support McCain? Can he win this damn thing without Hillary on the ticket? I’d only put her on, if she was absolutely essential in winning the election, because the baggage is suffocating. I’d wait around, watch, study and decide in August.

    Sorry. I’m out.

MNGirl, unfortunately I love Ebay a bit too much ;) but you mentioned three great role models for young women. HRC’s role as a role model is that of a woman who sticks by a husband who has power but can’t keep his pants on and by virtue of this, deserves some big reward at the end of the day.
It was interesting though listening to the crowd and looking at their faces.
