More gaseous demagoguery will be emitted on the Senate floor today as Harry Reid leads the crusade to impose a Jimmy Carter-era windfall profits tax on oil companies.

Democrat Rep. Maxine Waters has already threatened to nationalize the oil industry.

Here’s Dick Durbin demonizing profits:

With gasoline prices topping $4 a gallon, Senate Democrats want the government to grab some of the billions of dollars in profits being taken in by the major oil companies.

Senators were to vote Tuesday on whether to consider a windfall profits tax against the five largest U.S. oil companies and rescind $17 billion in tax breaks the companies expect to enjoy over the next decade.

“The oil companies need to know that there is a limit on how much profit they can take in this economy,” said Sen. Richard Durbin of Illinois, the Senate’s No. 2 Democrat, warning that if energy prices are not reined in “we’re going to find ourselves in a deep recession.”

Some GOP leaders vow they’ll fight:

Majority Leader Harry Reid, D-Nev., will need 60 votes Tuesday to proceed with the oil tax legislation in the face of a threatened GOP filibuster. If he doesn’t get 60, he likely will pull the bill from the floor.

Only last week, Reid was forced to withdraw a measure aimed at addressing global warming, falling short of the 60 votes needed to advance that legislation…

…Republican leader Mitch McConnell of Kentucky has acknowledged that Americans are hurting from the high energy costs but strongly opposes the Democrats’ response and has ridiculed those who “think we can tax our way out of this problem.”

Oil executives, testifying before Congress last month, called the proposed taxes “punitive” and warned that they would discourage domestic oil and gas exploration and production, possibly causing prices to rise instead of fall.
The American Petroleum Institute, which represents the major oil companies, has been reminding lawmakers that in the early 1980s, when the government imposed windfall profits taxes on oil companies domestic oil production dropped and imports increased. But Democrats reject the comparison. The Senate proposal would impose a 25 percent tax on profits over what would be determined “reasonable” and would allow oil companies to avoid paying the tax if they invest the money in alternative energy projects or refinery expansion.

Barack Obama supports the new tax and grab scheme.

And McCain? Well, I’ll remind you what he said last month in Charlotte, NC:

Transcript:

MCCAIN: “Um, I don’t like obscene profits being made anywhere–and I’d be glad to look not just at the windfall profits tax–that’s not what bothers me–but we should look at any incentives that we are giving to people, that or industries or corporations that are distorting the market.”

Update: Commenter liberty3:

I have been calling my Congressional representatives all morning about drilling for OUR oil. Decided to call Senator McConnell’s office, since he is the minority leader. I asked to speak to someone on the subject—the young lady who took my call said she would pass along a message. I repeated that I wanted to speak to someone versed in the subject—click…she hung up on me. Wow, didn’t expect that from the minority leaders office…

The dial tone we deserve?

Update 10:12am Eastern. McConnell on the Senate floor pointing out that the Carter windfall profits tax was a “miserable failure…Americans understand supply and demand…” Cites polls showing increasing number of voters who want drilling.

Update 10:25am Eastern. Charles Schumer demagogues Exxon Mobil, pooh-poohs ANWR. Kay Bailey Hutchison calls the Dems’ bill, “pure and simple…pathetic.”

Update 11:52am Eastern. Reid fails. 51-43.

Update 12:43pm Eastern. Here’s the roll call vote.

*Reid voted no in order to bring it back up on the floor at a later time.

Via CNN:

Senate Republicans on Tuesday blocked a Democratic initiative that would have taxed the windfall profits oil companies have enjoyed due to rising energy prices, with the minority leader calling the proposal a “gimmick.”

Record energy prices have led to record profits for oil companies.

The measure failed to achieve the 60 votes required by Senate rules to proceed. The vote was 51-43.

Six Republicans, including three seeking re-election in November, broke ranks to support the bill.

Two Democrats — Sen. Mary Landrieu of oil-producing state Louisiana and Majority Leader Harry Reid, who voted no to be able to bring the measure back to the floor under Senate rules — voted against the measure.

Along with placing a special tax of 25 percent on oil companies, the bill would have permitted lawsuits against the Organization of Petroleum Exporting Countries, the oil-producing cartel, and suspended deposits into the Strategic Petroleum Reserve.

Profits from renewable energy sources would be excluded from the tax.

An election victory for the democrats this november.

Over the weekend, I saw this idiot being interviewed on one of the news channels. When he was asked about BHO’s questionable associations with known criminals, his blindingly stupid take on foreign affairs, and his mentally deficient attitude towards the economy, all Reid could do was bash the Bush administration and try the “guilt-by-association” path with McCain. It was classic deflection and smoke-and-mirrors oratory.

Boomer, I’d be happy to chip in for your gas money, but you might as well stay home and try to beat some sense into your driveway.

    1. McCain doesn’t like “obscene profits” as well as price gouging. The oil companies are doing neither.

    2. “look at” =/= a promise to implement them.

    3. “that’s not what bothers me” .. apparently you don’t understand that he is referring to #1 and #2. He is not bothered by windfall profits. What he is bothered by are incentives that should not be in place. When the government gives money to farmers to not grow crops, or gives incentives to oil companies who are making a huge profit, then this needs to be addressed.

    4. Industries that are distorting the market. I don’t like industries that are distorting the market either. Do you like industries that are distorting the market?

So now, your claim that McCain is going to implement a windfall profit tax on all oil companies or whatver you are attempting to imply has been corrected.

Don’t bother making this lame claim again. Because when you do, and I see it, i’m going to correct the record.

    Again.

People with brains: 1+1=2 – when oil companies lose profits they will raise the cost of refining and gas to make up for the loss. Reality; taxes will make the gooberment fatter and higher gas prices.

I do know economics! Its a supply and demand thing. We have to reduce the demand, and let the supply catch up. I agree with more drilling, but that will take several years to make a difference. Reducing the demand without drastically hurting the economy is the best short term fix. I think we need to come up with our own fix before the government(mainly dems) tries, and screws things up worse!

I am not sure what can be done about oil Co profits, but I dont think that companies making tens of billions of dollars in profits need govt tax breaks either. They arent selling TV’s; they are selling oil, a critical resource that makes our economy run. The heads of these companies are globalists who could care less about $4.00 gallon gas. BUTTTTTTTTT….dems are responsible for the US not being able to drill for its own oil where there is plenty of it; for no new refineries being built; for no nuke power plants (even France now realizes how important that is and is doing something about it). So even though our current dependency on oil is a democratic party caused problem; the oil companies are enjoying pointing that finger, while enjoying record profit in the til, at the expense of the people in this country struggling to pay their bills.

And they get away with it!!! Why do we allow this? What is there in the American psyche that causes us to stand around like a bunch of sheep while politicians screw us to the wall? Also, what the hell is wrong with those American citizens who apparently think everything is just hunky dory?We need to spend more time thinking about what to do about this fundamental problem. If we don’t, we may wind up in the eye of the whirlpool faster than we think.

At one point, maybe it was a very smart move. But as you say, when they are very profitable – they don’t need more and more handouts from the taxpayers.

The problem is the democrats want to punish them, and they also want to take away tax incentives and what ever programs.

If the oil companies are making more money than before, then the incentives can be phased out. But I of course dont agree with the democrats that we need to punish a for profit company. Most of the democrats message is wrong for this country, and when Hillary says things like “I want to take these profits” and Obama says something similar, it’s very easy to understand what they will do if and when they get the power to do this.

I sent this letter to Bayh and Lugar today.

Do NOT pass the Windfall Profits Tax on Oil Companies.

I read where Senate DEMS reject the comparison to the early 80’s windfall profits tax result – domestic production decreased and imports increased. Now why would the Senate DEMS reject history? Since when can we not learn from history?!

I am all for alternative energy, but it isn’t going to happen overnight. I want increased domestic drilling NOW – ANWR and offshore. I also am in favor of nuclear energy and wind and solar too. Let’s do it all and let’s start now.

One thing I have never figured out… why do we expect OIL companies to invest in alternative energy? They’re in the business of selling OIL. What’s their incentive and why should we force that on them? Let someone else invest and research alternative energy sources!

Oil companies make less on a gallon of gas than the Federal Govt and the govt does NOTHING to get oil from the ground and into my gas tank.

I am sick to death of our politicians. Yes, I’m sick of you, the DEMS and GOP nationwide that have allowed our country to be economically crippled by environmentalist red tape and bureaucracy. I am PO’d that Bill Clinton vetoed drilling in ANWR back in the early 90’s. Boy, that extra 1 million barrels would probably be flowing right now had he done the right thing.

DEMS seem to worry about our standing in the world. Well I can tell you I bet they think we’re stupid! We have our own resources to help us and we won’t use them. What if farmers quit providing grain and livestock? Would that make sense? The US not using our own oil makes no sense either.

Senator, I will be watching closely how you vote for this ridiculous piece of legislation.

The price for regular unleaded gas just shot up in my hometown from $4.19/gal. to $4.41/gal. in the one week I was away on vacation. To listen to these whinning clowns, you’d think oil companies, like ExxonMobile were gouging us. How about the truth for a change?

Exxon makes approximately 17.5 cents a gallon profit. The federal government STEALS approx. 66 cents a gallon. The State of California TAKES almost 33 cents a gallon. So…

Exxon gets $3.53 on a 20 gallon fill up.

U.S. Treasury gets $13.53 on the same fill up.

State of California gets at least $6.60 a fill up.

Our governments take in over $20 per fill up, but Exxon takes in only about $3.53 profit at the same time? What product does the government provide for taking in this type of windfall?

We should have the best traffic infrastucture in the world for the amount of money we are having to pay, but we do not.

If anything oil companies should be given additional incentives to drill domestically. Where do the evil profits go? They go to Americans,i.e., pension funds of teachers, policeman, soldiers, firefigthers and millions of other Americans in various industries who invest in oil. So, who’s proposed to being taxed by the Democrats? See above.
