Animal rights thugs terrorizing Berkeley researchers

By Michelle Malkin  •  June 11, 2008 09:59 AM

I am so sure we’ll see the Left rise up and condemn this radical thuggery against animal rights researchers. I am so sure we’ll see UC Berkeley students organize to protest the property destruction, vandalism, and harassment of the targeted academics. I am so sure we’ll see Nancy Pelosi deliver a House floor speech in defense of the Bay area scientists.

Sure.

Via the SFChronicle with a hat tip to reader Andy G.:

Officials have been trying to keep it quiet, but 24 UC Berkeley researchers and seven staffers have been harassed by animal rights activists in recent months, in some cases having their homes or cars vandalized.

“What they all have in common is that they all work in animal research,” UC Berkeley spokesman Robert Sanders said of the targeted employees.

In several instances, the activists have shown up outside researchers’ homes in the middle of the night with bullhorns and chanting, “Animal killers.” Sometimes they have scrawled slogans on the sidewalk in chalk.

On more than one occasion, rocks have been thrown through the researchers’ windows and their cars have been scratched up.

“Sometimes (the activists) go up to the door,” Sanders said, “which can be very frightening to the family.”

According to UC, there have been 20 reports of damage to researchers’ homes in Berkeley, Oakland and El Cerrito since August, including seven broken house windows and three vandalized cars.

Thirteen researchers have been harassed on more than one occasion, authorities said. One researcher, who studies how cat brains work for epilepsy research, has reported seven incidents at his home.

UC Berkeley is always the most cartoonish, or at least near the top. But the Left’s ability to use violence and intimidation without recrimination and prosecution always bothers me. Let some thug call themself eco friendly and they seem to get a pass for all kinds of violence including spiking a tree that destroyed a mill works face.

I guess it really started in the late 60s when they let the anti-war hippies occupy building, bomb building, throw paint on people and use physical violence against returning GIs from Viet Nam.

Hopefully the authorities will do something, anything but tut tut the situation. In the meantime the agrieved may well have to take matters into their own hands and arms as it were.

khan, that essay knocked it right out of the park. I’ve known for many years the problem with many of these animal rights types and tree huggers isn’t so much that they love animals and nature as it is that they hate people.

I find it funny how if you propose intelligent design (which I’m skeptical about, btw) or if you oppose embryonic stem cell research, the left is quick to call you anti-science and anti-progress. But the left is silent on the crackpots who attack animal researchers and destroy laboratories. Aren’t those folks anti-science and anti-progress too? I completely respect the issues people have with using live animals in research, especially if it’s a scam to get money with no real results. Hey, I use cruelty-free cosmetics myself. But there’s no denying plenty of life-saving research has been done with animals and if it’s necessary to use live subjects to cure AIDS or diabetes or cancer, bring in the rats.

Did you read just how irrational these guys are?

Even a researcher who studies bird singing has been harassed and had his house vandalized.

“To study bird songs, you need to get them into the lab,” Sanders said. “You want to record them and see how they raise their young.”

It’s not exactly the animal torture chamber one usually associates with the most negative depictions of animal research. But “apparently, these activists don’t believe in any kind of animal research,” Sanders said.

And you think policy should be determined by the protester’s sense of morality?

The reason for all this anger now is that UC is currently constructing a new underground animal research facility. The “protesters” can’t get at it, so they are enraged. About 7 or 8 years ago, UC put their existing animal research facility underground to keep the labs and workers safe from the constant harrassment from these idiots. The “protesters” have been in a huge snit ever since, as they can no longer run up and down hallways and in and out of labs screaming at grad students. What a pity. Don’t blame UC for these fools. The university hates these clowns, none of whom ever went to Cal. They infest the campus daily with their “protests” and various idiocies such as the oak tree protest. Some 99% of the 30,000 students go about their business and pay no attention. Those “students” who participate are usually Sociology or Ethnic Studies majors. Get my drift?
