Bush goes mushy
On his farewell trip in Europe, President Bush distances himself from…himself.
Not the first time. And won’t be the last.
He’s putting the lame in lame duck.
Paul Mirengoff quips: “President Bush seems determined to drive his approval rating down to roughly zero percent.”

I miss the Axis of Evil Bush.
Michelle, it’s only because the liberals don’t speak Texan! When we say “Dean or Alive” or other terms he’s used to using that we understand in Texas, they jump to unnecessary conclusions.
He’s still loved down here!
If he’s really concerned about his legacy, he needs to pardon Scooter Libby!
And our border patrol agents.
Goes mushy?
Heck, that ship sailed for Mr. “New Tone” a long time ago.
I wonder if he’s trying to establish a “legacy”?
Or if he knows he already has one….
and it ain’t pretty…….
Let’s add Ramos and Compean to the pardon list, tmkeith, if he is concerned about his legacy.
As a matter of fact, how about he actually shows some initiative on border security and immigration enforcement, while he’s at it? *sigh*
Yeah.
Dang, Ron. You hit “submit”, before I could on Ramos and Compean.
There, we told you he was HItler.
Well, Manhattan is one big collective lump of Bush hatred… he must be doing something right.
“Leave
BritneyPresident Bush Alone!”It’s still not TOO late to
HELP THE PARTY Mr. President.
Declare:
An Emmacipation Proclimation for the Unborn…
Stop being nice to the Saudis….
I could go on ….
This is not the Bush I knew.
Thanks Bush, for not allowing us to get hit again. Thanks for following through with the Regime change and for seeing the war on terror as a war and not a legal matter. President Bush is FAR FAR FAR BETTER THAN CLINTON EVER WAS.
Nice one Blind Mule #14
It is a sad day when Bush offers to do as much or as little campaigning as a candidate wants.
I’ll drink to that. Oops, wrong Busch. Shoot, I will still drink to that!
Tammy Bruce is right. Aliens abducted Christian Cowboy Bush and replaced him with a liberal.
Well, don’t tell that to liberals. They would go nuts if they heard that.
Hey #15, I agree with you all the way. I get bashed at my house for still having some respect for GW. IMHO he has had to fight an unfriendly world and an even more unfriendly homeland. Fighting Illegals is his biggest failure, unfortunately, it could be the very one to break the back of America.
Then, by all means, let’s make sure they know. I enjoy watching liberals go spastic.
America’s enemies constantly chant Death to America as they burn the U.S. Flag and Bush is concerned about language he has used in the past toward them?
I think Bush is becoming a liberal.
Dennis Cookspinach got to Bush #20?
Typical compassionate conservative(ie: liberal), Hitches up pants, rolls up sleeves, then hands the shovel to someone else to muck out the barn. I for one will not miss him either.
To Quote from ‘On The Waterfront’
“You don’t understand. I coulda had class. I coulda been a contender. I coulda been somebody, instead of a bum, which is what I am, let’s face it.”
The President is backtracking on the very things I’ve always liked about him. Say it isn’t so, W! Don’t go soft on us now; stay the course.
And from the same PowerLine blog post, and just as relevant:
“Several years ago, Senator Rick Santorum said to me that the White House was suffering from “battered President syndrome.” That was before the battering reached a fever pitch in 2006. Based on the Times interview, Bush appears to have more or less internalized the criticisms that his enemies have lodged over the years.”
Maybe if America’s enemies didn’t chant Death To America while they burned the U.S. Flag, Bush wouldn’t be so inclined to use the Dead or Alive statement.
Eitherway, I believe Bush has lost confidence in himself and has become a liberal.
I for one would be quite happy with a President Cheney for the next 7 months.
It won’t be zero until he comes home to sign the Merida Initiative.
I guess if the liberals have their way Bush’s Presidential Library will just be a bookmobile that’ll tour gunshows & Monster Truck Rallys.
After reading the comments up to this point, I thought I would modify my earlier legacy comment to reflect a kinder perspective on our outgoing president.
Then I started remembering issues and events like his non-support of the border guards, his administration’s intrusions into individual lives and privacy, FEMA and New Orleans, the essential disembowling of conservatives, and many more that I don’t care to list here…..
His legacy will be what it is….He may be exonorated by future historians depending on how things play out in the future.
But I won’t forget.
Speak for yourself.
like so many republicans, he’s grown in office…ie become a liberal. I’m sorry I voted for the fool. I won’t that mistake with captain queeg (mccain)
with Grahmnesty winning yesterday, might as well vote democratic, at least I’ll be stabbed in the front, instead of the back
Not just liberals.
“Compassionate Conservative” should have given us a clue.
But at least he took the war to al Qaeda (not at all sure a President Gore would have).
I think Peggy Noonan is correct, in blaming Bush’s less than conservative leadership for allowing a big spending Republican Congress, and being soft on immigration reform, issues that would have resonated with the American people if they had been promoted.
The weakened state of the GOP is at least partly Bush’s fault.

I still think the man is a class act. He cares about people and has the guts to stick to his guns– especially important considering what has happened under his watch. I’m so glad he was in the WH during the terrorist attack.
I do think he has gotten some very bad advice. He allowed his SECDEF to direct a war he was not qualified to direct. He sold out national sovreignty in the name of compassion. (Are we a nation of laws or not?)
I DO NOT blame him for Katrina. The state and local government screwed that up but got a pass from the media.(Can’t criticize Dems apparently) And the Iraq war was going to happen eventually as long as Saddam was in charge and obstructing nuclear inspectors.
I do wish he had learned how to pronounce “nuclear” over the past eight years. Just saying….
Why do I have this sinking feeling that President Bush is going to offer huge
bribesincentives to the Palestinians to sign a peace accord in an attempt to secure his legacy as a “man of peace” in the final days of his presidency?Such a peace accord will last exactly 10 minutes but we will end up giving billions to fund future terrorism attempting to keep our end of the agreement. I’m tired of Presidents spending our money in an attempt to win a Nobel Peace Prize.
swmbo said: #21, I agree 100%. History will be on his side. If he didn’t mess with the illegal invader issue, he’d be at about 50% approval. (Noting that breaking 50 would be a miracle with the hate on the left.)
IndieTom,
I forgot about the border patrol agents– how sad. A TRUE conservative would never have allowed that to happen. So sad.
This tough talking cheerleader won’t be vindicated by history, his will be a legacy of ruin and disgrace.
Scoot along back to HuffPo Scooter.
several notches above Clinton and Carter, Scooter36.
And if he had messed with congressional overspending with some vetos. He may have gotten closer to 50% approval, which, compared to Congress approval would have been outstanding!
The Bush legacy will be one of half-measures and steps-not-taken. Unwillingness to go to the mat with Congress over energy exploration and allowing the global-warming pimps to seize the high ground may be his greatest failure. Failing to keep the pressure on Pakistan and NATO in Afghanistan. Trumping up the wrong reasons for going into Iraq then going in with half the force necessary. Failure to properly frame the S-CHIP debate. Failure to get control of his executive-branch bowels like State and the CIA. Listening to eight years of this guy mumbling it’s, unfortunately, easy to understand why some folks would think Obama’s a good idea.
43 & 44…whatever gets you to sleep at night i guess…
and #46..let me summarize your words (nice post by the way)..The Bush Legacy will be one of FAILURE. there that’s better!
#32:
Not to mention the end-around of a state’s court, with, unbelievably, help from the state’s senator. the infamous “Palm Sunday Compromise”. Further erosion of states’ rights.
Speakeasy…
I have to admit that the problems of FEMA in New Orleans were certainly aided and abetted by local and state incompetence, but the head of FEMA at the time was a crony who used to organize horse shows. I don’t blame President Bush personally for the governmental malfeasance exhibited in that situation. But I have to wonder what would have happened had he taken the time to dig out and review the words alledged to be on a plaque that sat on Harry Truman’s desk….
“The Buck Stops Here”
That is what got when I voted for the lesser of two evils.
That’s what I got when I voted for the lesser of two evils.
What was Clinton’s Scooter? Just want to see if you call it honestly. Remember the purple fingers.
if he really cared, he wouldn’t let illegal immigration run out of control, where people are treated like serfs, just so some can benefit from their cheap labor
Yet, it was still the lesser if one imagines where we’d be had Gore or Kerry been president.
Alas, the cycle continues.
at least we’d be over that, and a real conservative could have gotten in, instead we have to look forward to it…
Again with this fantasy.
-Saddam Hussein is dead
-His two disgusting sons are dead
-People in Iraq are free from tyranny
-Our soldiers are winning in Iraq
-We have the best trained military in the world now because of the war on terror
-Our country has not been attacked since 2001
-Most of the planners of 9-11 are dead
-Most of the leaders of Al qaeda are dead
-Omar Kadafi willingly gave up his WMD’s
-The UN Oil-for food scandal was outed and is over
-He did not have an affair with a young intern in the Oval Office
-He showed respect for the office of President of the US
-He honored prayer in the White House
-He met with families of those fallen even when they cursed him and refused to shake his hand
-He met with the victims’ families after 9-11…something Bill Clinton or Hillary never did after 1993…for over 2 hours
-The tax cuts helped millions of families including mine
All these things he has accomplished in the White House.
Could he have done more? Yes. We all could have. We all should have.
I, for one, will miss George W. Bush…. the last Christian President this country will ever have.
For those of you who will be glad to see him go..be careful what you wish for: You will get it.
Get ready to say good-bye to this great country because it will soon be gone forever.
Apologizing for just about the only thing he got right. Figures.
“For those of you who will be glad to see him go..be careful what you wish for: You will get it.
Get ready to say good-bye to this great country because it will soon be gone forever.”
More than anyone before him, “W” has been flushing this country down the toilet. The mask has slipped and both sides have been revealed as EQUALLY CULPABLE in their destruction of our Country.
Pretending that one is better than the other is engaging in a pointless delusion. Really the only difference is the speed in which the destruction takes place and “W” has removed the brakes.
I’m sick of wimps. Would you Republicans out there stop bowing to DemoCommie and Media pressure. Come on Boss, tell it like it is.
All I ask is than the RNC start fighting. Weak moves like this put Liberals in power..
Great Post #57. Don’t forget the 2 Justices. Scooter doesn’t think History will prove him well, but his two justices will be in place long after President Bush is gone.
I’m not sure why him being, or not being, a christian really makes a difference in his character.
I wish Justice Roberts a very long tenure.

I don’t think it’s in them to fight liberals. RNC actually stands for Really Not Conservative.
The RNC needs a complete overhaul in leadership.
Oh my God would I love to see that.
Man…what would things have been like without 9/11.
I’ve stuck by President Bush for almost eight years now, though I may disagree with many choices he’s made. When I voted in 2000, I thought the two choices we had were bad, so I based my vote solely on one issue: national security. I’m still glad I did. Crazy, right?
Don’t forget the other choices we had in 2000 and 2004.
Looks like I’ll be basing my vote for the same reason this year. I wish I had more reasons, but I don’t. However, I realistically only have two choices, unless some miracle independent candidate suddenly appears.
I expect that history won’t be kind to Bush (at least for the next fifty years), especially if our next President screws up what Bush has been trying to fix in Iraq. It’ll all still be Bush’s fault. If everything starts improving in the next few years, Bush will have had nothing to do with it. If everything gets worse in the next few years, Bush will be responsible.
Bush has had the toughest presidency since WWII, but he hasn’t had a nervous breakdown. How would anyone else have handled it? None of us can say, since we haven’t been in his shoes. Make all the jokes and snide remarks you want, but imagine, seriously imagine, what it’s like to have the weight of the world on your shoulders, hearing day after day after day that you’re viciously hated by perhaps billions of people, when you know that only three of every ten citizens in your own country support you, and you still continue to lead the country that hates you, trying to keep its best interests at heart, knowing the things that we don’t.
And don’t try to say that we know everything that he knows. He’s privy to things that most Americans have no clue. He’s the pariah of the decade, and I don’t think it’s totally justified. I guess my view qualifies me as one, too.
That being said, his immigration policy sucks, and it’s too bad he’s being apologetic. Seven and a half years are starting to take its toll. Just a few months to go, President Bush. Hang in there.
Sad but so very true.
When solicited by them for financial support, I kindly reply to them in their conveniently post-paid envelope to let them know the reason for my non-support.
If all Republicans did the same, the RNC might “get it” and re-align to conservatism and effective leadership. Or else it will just whither away from wilfull ignorance and stupidity.
The next year or two will determine if it really is the time for a complete party replacement.
Meanwhile I send my financial support directly to those candidates who’s policies I can agree with. Not through a disfuctional and impotent surrogate.
I agree on that one. As well as Alito.
What a surprise. The “compassionate conservative” goes mushy.
leaving the republican party better or worse than when Nixon left office?
I’m saying worse when I see Maverick running..
I am disappointed that President Bush has gone looney on virtually everything except Iraq and terrorism. Even so, I am thankful that he, and not the Dems has been in charge for the past two terms.
Regrettably, McCains position on Iraq is just about his only redeeming virtue but, inexplicably, he is our bestchoice
Right.
Well, Scooter, when you speak out of hate, what comes out of your mouth? Hate.
As a military spouse, I’m glad Saddam Hussein is gone. I’m glad Pres. Bush was around to comfort the nation during 9/11. I’m glad that he cared enough about taxpayers that he cut our taxes for a couple of years.
I don’t blame him too much for Katrina. Hate-tinged liberals like yourself, Scooter, think government can solve everything. It can’t.
I don’t appreciate Pres. Bush’s take on illegal immigration and doing nothing about it. I don’t like, as another poster has said, that he did nothing about energy independence. I don’t like that he allowed out of control spending.
You can have Clinton and his much “vaunted” legacy. It was people like Clinton that made sure the sub-prime fiasco happened due to letting just about anybody have credit and buy a house on such.
Nope, I know you hate Pres. Bush. It’s central to many of your posts. You can’t see beyond it. I know Pres. Bush was an imperfect president but a “failure?” Just like I know that you will never admit that Clinton was “imperfect” and that Obummer is far from the perfect presidential candidate.
What I find shameful is the damage that liberals have done with a Republican president in office. That’s what I can’t stand. Liberals have a lot to answer for but will never take responsibility for their actions as long as adherents like yourself make excuses for them and can’t work with the other side.
