Offshore drilling bill killed
GOP Rep. John Peterson’s latest bid to lift domestic offshore drilling restrictions, which I blogged earlier today here, was killed this afternoon by the House Appropriations Subcommittee on Interior and the Environment. It was a straight, party line vote.
Dems against:
Chair: Norman D. Dicks (WA)
James P. Moran (VA)
Maurice D. Hinchey (NY)
John W. Olver (MA)
Alan B. Mollohan (WV)
Tom Udall (NM)
Ben Chandler (KY)
Ed Pastor (AZ)
Dave Obey (WI), Ex Officio
Republicans for:
Ranking Member:
Todd Tiahrt (KS)
John E. Peterson (PA)
Jo Ann Emerson (MO)
Virgil H. Goode, Jr. (VA)
Ken Calvert (CA)
Jerry Lewis (CA), Ex Officio
The Republicans on the subcommittee vow to keep pressing the issue:
A 27-year-old federal moratorium has prevented offshore drilling in most coastal waters except parts of the Gulf of Mexico.
Virginia lawmakers have expressed interest in pursuing drilling, particularly for natural gas.
Peterson, who is retiring next year, said offshore drilling could provide enough oil to replace Middle East oil imports for 35 years. He said the plan would also yield an 18-year supply of natural gas.
“There is no valid reason for Congress to continue keeping Americans from the offshore resources they own,” Peterson said.
But Democrats, who control Congress, said offshore drilling would have no immediate effect on the price of gasoline and would do little to lower the world price of oil.
“We are kidding ourselves, as we routinely do in this town, if we think we can drill our way out of this problem,” said Rep. Dave Obey, D-Wis.
…”The American people are going to have a lot to say about this,” said Rep. Jerry Lewis, R-Calif., the ranking Republican on the full House Appropriations Committee.
Have your say. The Congressional switchboard number: 202-224-3121.

With Casey and Specter as my senators it will be fruitless but I will call.
Oooh look, a stick to beat you with…
Wait for gas to go up another 50 cents & call it a jobs creation bill… that should do it.
wth
i just cant wrap my head around any good reason why we cant explore/drill/provide oil and NG for ourselves.
what are these people getting out of tyeing our hands?
I’ve made it a habit to tell anyone who complains about gas prices exactly who is obstructing our oil industry and how they are doing it. Perhaps enough will be angry enough to dump some traitorous democrats.
The Democrat Marxists know the drive by parrot won’t tell.
Simply amazing
Maurice Hinchey is a lowlife piece of garbage. That dude used to eat schrooms growing on cow sh*t in the 60’s in the town of New Paltz.
“republican’s plan to continue to press the issue…” RIIIIIGHT.
They will press until November. Just like the only time a democrat goes into a black church is the months right before an election… most of these quasi-Liberal Republicans only act Conservative a few months out of an election.
If God puts oil where the sun doesn’t shine, thats where you drill
International Symbol for Gasoline
Reasonable to assume Obey doesn’t believe in the law of supply and demand.
No worries, the Dems will nationalize oil companies if they can, and they can set the price of gas wherever they want.
Really low, make consumers happy, except when the stations have no gasoline half the week, or really high to discourage driving to ’save the nevironment’.
Anyone notice that none of these clowns represent any states with real off-shore interests except the two “for” votes from CA? Is it just me, or does that seem a little bit stupid that a group such as that would be the ones voting on an issue that really shouldn’t or doesn’t concern them?
High gas prices give Dems a campaign issue.
Remember the good Dpctpr with the tire iron at the pumps? Perhaps people should be showing up in Washington or at the congressional state offices with pitch forks & tire irons or gas cans and make a bit of a noise.
So once again they are only worried about the immediate impact. If they had not voted against drilling in ANWR in 1995 we would have that supply running full blast by now. I can’t believe Republicans can’t take advantage of their shortsightedness and ram it back down their throats.
I live just down the freeway from the San Onofre nuclear power plant. Supplies a ton of power to southern California and I never worry a minute about it. If Brazil can use nuclear power to wean themselves off imported oil in 10 years the greatest country on earth sure as hell better be able to.
Give me drilling in ANWR & off the coasts, nuclear power plants and refineries!
If 27 years ago we had been drilling offshore any sane individual who say gas prices would be far lower today as we would not be dependent on foreign oil.
Key word is Immediat. So they agree it does have effect. So, they use the same argument Slick Willy made about 15 years ago. Had they opened ANWR back then, we would be fine right now. Another black mark on that Arse’s Legacy.
I’m sure Durbin and Obama will listen to my demands for an end to government obstruction. At least Durbin sends a letter full of meatless spin in reply. Obama is too busy running to be the next Il Duce to bother having a staff member respond.
Dems, wrong again, survey says!
YES MEANS YES!
I don’t think any real change in the right direction of increasing supply will occur until America has another solid conservative such as another Reagan who can forcefully argue for common sense in such matters. Unfortunately, the electorate does not sound like it deserves such common sense when we have two leading presidential candidates who apparently oppose more drilling in order to appease such an electorate. We have truly entered into the reigning days of the foolish and the lunatic.
At least the Republicans tried to raise this issue. It’s sad that the Dems are more interested in protecting “pristine” land and the environment and less on perhaps giving Americans affordable options that do not include foreign oil. All I see is the Dems demonizing oil companies and how “mean” they treat the environment when the real story is how technology has made drilling seamless and even safer for the environment.
This makes me sad. The Dems will not be content (nor their poor me, victimized followes) until they force a cultural and economic shift/change unto Americans themselves. I find this tactic to be both hypocritical and brutal. Dems won’t be content until they revert America into some feudal state where we all live in huts and use horse and buggies while they live large and in charge.
I want to ask Dems a few questions:
1. Are you trying to force a change that will weaken America and her economy further?
2. Are you trying to take over (nationalize) industries (oil) whose profits you covet?
3. Why can’t you see that we need more refineries in this country?
4. Why can’t you understand that with the advance of technology, drilling has become much more safer and less environmentally “hostile?”
5. Do you enjoy watching my family suffer filling up our tanks? Why?
6. Are you really interested in serving the needs of our country and being energy independent or are those mere campaign slogans to win reelection?
In their echo chamber, Dems are assured that they will always be right, and that all us poor schmucks gotta pay for it regardless. Thanks, Dems.
We pay for their gas so why would they care if it’s so high?
Oh, Goldwater Knight, it’s much worse. He represents my hometown of Ithaca, NY (in his district). The committed leftie Dembots continually vote in this weasel because he will ensure a spread of their Socialist Utopia. My Conservative parents have had to put up with this scum for more than 20 years.
I’m 32 and he’s been around since I attended primary school. He’s another harrowing example of the intransigence in Washington.
….And that’s the way Dems love it. No progress on anything that WE want until we, the people, learn that we need them to survive.
Hinchey is just another member of the villainous hive of scum known as Congress.
Guess what Obey?
YOU GOT MAIL!
Call the offices of Congressmen from all states-As I’ve said before–
Once in Wash DC– their votes affect us all.
We – here – in CA– have had to do this for a looooooooooooong time.
Could some enterprising young programmer at least create a Flash game where I could punch these clowns in their collective jimmies for this blatant disregard for the Constitution? Whatever happened to defending the country from all enemies foreign and domestic?
Chairman Norman Dicks? They’re ALL dicks to me!
Socialist Utopia=Soviet Union
The Soviet Union is a nice subject to study, but I sure as hell don’t emulate them
WTF is wrong with this congress besides being liberal and incompetent!
I do wonder if this can play out as a campaign issue against the “green-elite” Dems.
The rest of the world–Canada, Cuba, Brazil, China, Falkland Islands, Russia, etc.–are all increasing off-shore exploration, yet some of our leaders, who probably get a good portion of their travel expenses paid fo by the taxpayer, are failing us.
Nobody said it would do anything today but, beside immediate satisfaction this idiot congress can’t see past it would bring future relieve.
VOTE THESE MF’S OUT!
But that’s just it, the vote would have brought immediate relief. It’s the futures market that’s driving up the cost of oil right now and if investors knew that a several billion barrel reserve would be online soon, the the futures market would reflect that.
# 32 I disagree because we wouldn’t have several billions worth of oil now. Though I agree it is the commodity market pushing futures and congress can’t bring immediate relief now. We have to start the process of getting off of foreign oil somewhere. It will take 10 yrs before we see any results from starting exploration now.
You forgot villainy.
ROTFLMAO.
The sad fact of the matter is that only the Democrat Party is capable of making serious reform on, well, any issue you can name. True, the Republicans can still stop some legislative foolishness, when they are so inclined, but that is it. The time for action was before 2004 and the Republicans & Bush did not even try. Now that window has closed. Unless the democrats really feel political heat from their constituencies on this — i.e. they are unable to shift the blame to big business etc and face serious election losses as a consequence, nothing will change.
An educated responsible electorate would help, but we’ll be commuting to work on anti-gravity skateboards before that happens.
#36 nicely said
Speaking of which, Back to the Future II promised be that cars would be hovering by now, what gives?!?!
Yes, they do like to lie about things. Just allowing us to explore, build refineries and mine coal would lessen the pressure on speculation.
Strange colalition between the eco freaks and foreign producers. The Democrats might lift some of the restrictions IF they sweep government.
Are you freakin’ SERIOUS??? How many times did the Republicans try to open up ANWR? Just who passed most of the restrictions in the first place, but leftist weenies? Onerous CAFE standards that increase the price of cars while lowering their size and safety? Multiple seasonal gas reformulations? Leftist MIMBYism and Jane Fonda-inspired bedwetting over nuclear power?
Why would Dems reform and de-regulate their own “reforms” and regulations, since to do so would be to admit massive political blundering!
Oh and btw: Pelosi said in 2006 that the Dems WOULD reform energy policy. If the window was closed after 2004, oh Wise One, why did she say that? And why have she and her party done SQUAT since?
Wherever you’ve been, “beenthere”, there’s no “there” there.
An appropriate name for all the Dems on this committee. They suck common sense out of the room, and bend over at your own risk.
We just had to teach the Republicans a lesson in ‘06, didn’t we?
Didn’t WE have a majority in the mid 90s?
Oh-wait a minute- we had a Republican majority in both the Senate and House…lots of pork (my $$$ and yours) was still distributed and…
WEEE conservative – patriots did NOT have a majority in both Houses in the mid 90s—I answered my own ????
What the hell? Not a damn thing will gone done anytime soon. Yeah, congress is looking out for us!!!
/s/
the guerilla
Speechless.
We’re sinking as a country real fast.
I’ve become a lot more pessimistic since reading “Death of the West” Patrick J. Buchannan. Very sobering reading.
I don’t see why this is not an opening for the Repuk-e-cans. Let every American know why their gas prices, heating oil, electricity, and everything you purchase from food to your clothing is so damn high. Don’t forget to tell the seniors on SSI or SSD and fixed incomes their overseer’s have stuck it to ‘em one more time, as they go to vote in Nov.
Doesn’t this say it all? Aren’t we the only country in the world that puts such limits on DRILLING FOR OUR OWN #(%& OIL?! It’s crazy. Domestic drilling isn’t THE answer, but it’s an important part of the solution. If we let it!
Dear Mr. fulldroolcup:
I stand by what I said. Following Sowell’s Law (that Republicans go to Congress for the sole purpose of making deals with Democrats), there was no serious push on their part regarding energy independence, opening up ANWR, nuclear this, etc. Such efforts were always trumped by the environmental concerns, which the democrats completely control, and the Republicans always run from. As an example, please check with our current presidential candidate for his concurring views on ANWR, off shore drilling, etc. True, here and there a lone Republican would make a proposal along those lines but it would go nowhere. Pretty much like Border control.
And yes, the democrats will say anything to get elected. That these cynical ploys work is not news. Bluedog democrats are not our friends, as Thomas Sowell predicted.
Anyway, in a sense you prove my point. I say the republicans are indifferent and/or cowardly; you say they are impotent. In either case, the same element is missing and the same result is attained. So lame insults will not change the reality of the situation we both agree on: Democrats rule Republicans drool — if you will forgive the phrase.
I’m beginning to think the Democrats are selling this country down the river. Surely nobody can be this stupid as to think not drilling domestically is a solution and that taxing the oil companies and removing risk incentives would actually result in lower prices at the pump. One day the Democrats are going to have to stand up and all admit in unison, “we are not smarter than a 5th grader”.
Meanwhile, we will have been destroyed economically.
A) Who gives a damn about the price of world oil?! Offshore drilling (and ANWR for that matter) will lower the AMERICAN price of oil. I personally don’t care what Fifi LeBouf is paying for petrol.
B) I find it interesting how the Dems are absolutely certain that changing one variable in the supply/demand equation will have little impact on the result of that equation. An equation that has been fairly predictable since the dawn of commerce.
Yet, they are also absolutely certain that cutting down on CO2 emissions will save the world from some unsubstantiated theory. Every prediction made based on this theory has failed to come true.
Seriously, we need to fire all incumbents in DC, and start over fresh.
The moratorium has prevented the Chinese from drilling 60 miles off the coast of FL, right? I am sure the ChiComs are drilling straight down and not north towards FL.
Hey Enviro-nitwits are we regulating the Chinese to prevent an offshore spill? Do you think they care? It isn’t off their coast!
Let’s here it for common sense in Congress…NOT! Congress is drilling the American people where the sun don’t shine and they don’t care.
Bush has to go to the Middle East and beg them to pump more oil and be told no. The Arabs were right to say why don’t you drill for your own.
This is not as much about political parties as it is about environmental lobbyists. There have no ‘clear’ majorities in both houses of congress and the presidency to match since Jimmy Carter. The republicans only got the bill for ANWR to Clinton’s desk in 95 ONLY because the democrats knew he would veto it. The short handed republican majorities of the 00’s were only able to move forward bills loaded with pork for both democrats and republicans. Of course, now that we have democrat majorities the biggest bills being passed have pork for mostly democrats and enough republicans to get them passed (like that lovely 300 billion farm bill). There is absolutely no chance of any new oil drilling or of building nuclear power plants in the US at this time.
I suspect that the next push will be to prohibit the shipping of coal overseas.
The next chance for the environmental lobby to lose this level of control will be when we can no longer heat people in the winter and they die. Meantime, those of us in ‘warmer’ climates can expect rolling blackouts to begin over the next several years. We will simply be told to shut up though as most people don’t die from the heat, just the old and infirm.
People that think solar or wind sources of electricity will make a difference are only kidding themselves. Though I do expect that some of the ‘privledged’ will find ways to take themselves ‘off of the grid’ to avoid the nuisance of blackouts.
On the bright side, as we become a third world country the immigration issue will be solved! No reason to move to a new country that cannot keep the power turned on!
I plan on having my say in November on Election Day.
If the price of diesel fuel is over $2.50 I’m going to pull the Democrat lever.
Just sayin’ … this kind of thing is 8 years too late. The RINOs could have pulled this off at any point between 2000 and 2006 and they did not.
Diesel $2.50 a gallon??? Where have you been the last few days?? Try over $5.00 a gallon within 15 miles of the refinery.
Back in the 1950s there was an Oil Shale project going on near Rifle, Colorado. Fuel from the project was not economic then as gasoline was around $0.25 or so.
The Rs should keep bringing this issue up and push until they get what the country wants—more domestic drilling. I called up both my liberal US senators (Cantwell and Murray) and told them to quit holding the american people hostage and being part of the problem–and to start to drill and refine more, here in the US. You have to speak up, people, and let them know you’re on to them. Sure they’re not going to drop it all and go your way tomorrow, but if they don’t hear from you and assume you agree with them, then they have no cause to stop and ponder the wrong track that they are on. Please call your senators and tell them you are sooooo on to their phoney grandstanding with the lame windfall profits tax!
Ditto! I sent the Bobbsey Twins emails expressing my disappointment and umbrage over their ignorance of basic economics.
We do have to pressure these people, folks. If they don’t hear from us, they will be stuck on stupid forever.
In the meantime Nancy P. will continue to fly over Mid America in her super sized jumbo jet burning more fuel per hour than most Americans will use in a year. Then our gas will drive her super sized vehicles to the vineyards where she can oversee the peons on the plantation and tell them she is looking out for them. Sounds like H+++ on earth.
Oh but why would we need to drill for oil in our country after all we went to war in Iraq for the oil.
/sarcasm
On a serious note, I truly believe that this issue, just as social security, the Dems do not want a solution as they can continue to use it as a campaign issue. To them this is an even better issue than social security as they can use the whole mantra of “obscene profits for the evil oil executives” as the persons to blame; where as social security they did not have anyone but politicians to blame.
wait until winter, Northerners, when your heating oil price skyrockets. This is gonna be a long year.
beenthere: get back to me when you can make a coherent argument.
There’s not a single FACT in what you say, only a string of unsupported assertions.
I say again: it was DEMOCRATS who gave us the laws and regs we’re stuck with. That’s a FACT.
If you think those laws and regs are not behind the current mess we’re in, please tell us why. Please use facts and suporting reasoning, and vice versa.
If you can tell us how and why why Dems can reform themselves, please explain why the ages-old expression ” a leopard can’t change his spots” is wrong.
You will have a tough time here at MM if you can’t do that.
One thing that I would like to point out is that the House has already made it so they will get less email. As it stands now if you try to email a representative that is not your own it will not allow it to go through. When filling out the email form they require your zip code plus the 4 digit code (in some cases). If it does not match up with the Rep you are trying to email forget it it will not go through. Try for yourself here.
And look what it says on Norm Dicks website for email:
Zip Codes are public information. Just use the right zip code.
BTW, Does Mr. Dicks just accept campaign contributions from only the zip codes in his district?
In reply to #6:
A picture’s worth a thousand dollars.
Recap incase you’re too lazy to check Snoop’s post: http://www.anewtone.com/uploaded_images/GasChart51-thumb-743758.jpg
I have been fuming over this one all night even having a little bit of trouble sleeping because of the sheer stupidity and audacity of the Democrat led “do nothing” Congress. Let’s just say I am beyond angry. My biggest sin is I think like a problem solving human being (you know like a GI) instead of a politician realizing if you have a problem or challenge you do something to overcome it. That’s one reason our military is the only functional department of the entire Federal Government despite the poor leadership decisions in cutting personnel to buy new toys for the fighter pilot mafia. Can’t thank Secretary Gates enough on firing the Air Force leadership, which has effectively broken the force.
Between this and my lying crapweasel Congress critter Simpson going on the news last night and stating the Mexican Consulate shoved down the throats of the Idaho citizen as not being a threat to the average citizen has me in a pretty foul move this morning. Just goes to show that he and our RINO Senator “wide stance” Craig is in the pocket of Big Agriculture and many local chamber’s of commerce that love to look the other way while their citizens suffer the collateral damage from drunk drivers, rapist, murderers, Mexican gang bangers, illegal drugs, and infectious diseases these invaders bring with them. Thanks so much Secretary Rice and your corrupt, inept, bumbling, and clueless State Department for forcing this on me and my neighbors only giving more proof of our every growing bloated, arrogant, and tyrannical Federal Government. Sorry about the off topic rant, but this is one of the few healthy outlets keeping me on the reservation instead of going out to claim some scalps. It really is time to water the tree of liberty again.
To get back on topic here, this is a very easy problem to fix, but the Democrats won’t be happy until they either destroy the economy or nationalize the oil companies establishing a Government monopoly which will only create another bloated dysfunctional agency which they can blame on Bush should he be stupid enough to allow them their agenda. Anyone remember the good old days of gas rationing under “peanut brain” Carter? One of two things is going to happen in the very near future either the President will have to issue an executive order allowing the oil companies to drill and build new refineries creating jobs while ending this run on oil prices by corrupt speculators manipulating the market (which I am convinced is a ploy to manipulate the election in favor of the Democrats) or the American citizens will finally have enough rise up and tear these lying crapweasels to pieces. Lots of people in our little military town are now deciding on what bills to make partial payments on (mostly utilities) so they can still afford to go to their jobs (for those that still have one) and be able to feed their families.
WHAT IS WRONG WITH THESE NITWITS!!!!!
How the hell can you say that drilling for our own oil will not help us!!!
I could care less about what the rest of the world pays for oil!
We need lower prices and if starting to drill NOW is the way to then DO IT!!!!
Thier argument was that drilling now wouldn’t get oil into the pipelines for 7-10 years. Okay. and in 7-10 years they will say the same thing and still not drill. Stir and repeat until the USA goes broke from trying to pay 10 a gallon gas prices.
Good! I don’t want to spoil my coastal view so that some yokel from Missouri (my home state, full of yokels) can have cheap gas.
– fulldroolcup
It seems to me that car prices have risen roughly on-par with inflation over the last couple of decades. And to be honest, reducing the number of huge SUV’s/pickups on the road makes everyone else on the road safer, and reduces (or slows the growth of) our dependence upon foreign oil.
Simply declaring beenthere’s arguments incoherent does not make them so.
You mean the yokel that delivers your food to your store? or the yokel who has no public transportation so has to just soak up the extra cost of getting to work? That includes most of the population of the usa. Or do you mean the “yokel” cops who have to cut down on patrols due to gas prices. Exactly which yokel are you talking about because unless you buy nothing from any store, generate your own electricity, have your own water well and walk everywhere, that yokel is YOU.
Oh and LGM, you “view” (which seems more important than your countries survival) would not have been violated unless you can see more than 50 miles.
The American people are about to break out the jumbo can of whoop-ass on these anti-American loons in Congress. If they can’t or won’t act decisively and responsibly then they must be removed from office. This is malfeasance of the worst kind.
I’ll spot you on your first comment, since I can’t locate data to support my claim.
As to the second, you seem to forget that larger cars are inherently safer for the people riding in them. It’s a matter of physics. Making all cars smaller doesn’t change that.
Secondly, there’s a lot of business done in this country using pickup trucks. Just look at the logos on their sides when you’re out on the highway in your Yugo.
So, if YOU think the government should decide, in balance, that it’s more important to “save” oil than to save lives, or for citizens to have the means to earn a living, you’re free to make that case.
But it’s not a slam-dunk. In any event “reducing our dependence on foreign oil” can be dealt with directly, by drilling for our own ample supplies, right here in the US and off our shores.
If you can articulate reasons why we shouldn’t do so, please do. Most liberals won’t get specfic as to their reasons, except to cite environmental horribles that haven’t happened in countries where drilling takes place (including our own).
Also, beenthere didn’t factually address anything I said — that’s not a coherent argument.
sonofdy #72 – Excellent smackdown!!!
Showing contempt for the same democrats you hope vote for Obama.
I don’t want to pay 1 penny more for my gas, so you can have a view.
We should have known that lgm lives in the Show me the way out state.
Hopefully people will get pissed off enough by the time we are heading into winter and heating oil is soaring and gas is $5.00/gallon and groceries are more expensive and they can’t afford to fly the family to see Grandma and Grandpa that they will demand
DRILL HERE!
DRILL NOW!
PAY LESS!
Vote for the candidate who will drill here, now!
Oh wait…
I live on the gulf coast of Florida, and I have a view…it’s quite nice actually, but it doesn’t rain very much. I also work at home, and hardly use any gas. Hell, the windows are open here for most of the year.
But I want to be part of the solution and not the problem. The “view” argument is a load of crap, as any drilling would be so far offshore that it would be far over the horizon.
Here’s an exercise for you Mister P…next time you travel to the coast (if you can afford the gas), look out to sea. See if you can see any buoys farther than a few hundred yards out. Now try to pick out the deep sea fishing boats that are surely out there. You know, the cattle boats that they put a hundred people on. Can’t see ‘em? Hmmm…
Want something bigger? Ok, go to a port, and watch a cruise ship or a freighter as they leave port…see how long you can keep them in view. They sure must be accelerating like rocket boats, cuz they fall out of view, over the edge of the earth pretty quickly.
DRILL HERE! DRILL NOW! PAY LE$$!
I think the STRESS POINT will be $5.00/gal. When we start to pay this, even some of the REAL ZEALOUS tree huggers will start to SMARTIN’ a bit. This is the LAST thing OPEC and the rest of our GOOD FRIENDS want… So look for prices to level out at $4.30 to $4.50 range… Pretty clever, these FRIENDS we have, hey???
