California home-schooling update

By Michelle Malkin  •  June 12, 2008 02:28 PM

You remember the controversial California homeschooling decision from a few months back (see here and here).

Well, here’s an update I just received about the next step in the case:

The Court of Appeals will be hearing oral arguments on the rehearing of In Re Rachel L. on Monday, June 23, 2008 at 10:00am in the Los Angeles Court of Appeals, District 2, Division 3 Courtroom. Sunland Christian School (SCS) has been granted special status in this case. The family’s lawyers and SCS lawyers will give brief oral arguments. This involves presentations by the lawyers followed by questions asked by the judges to the lawyers. While there are many directions this case could take

Some of the outcomes could be: the court maintaining the same ruling, remanding the case back to the lower court for further evidential findings, or make a new ruling which could take a wide variety of positions on the different aspects of this case.

Whatever direction this case takes, Sunland Christian School is committed to maintain the integrity of homeschooling and follow up with the appropriate legal action. If necessary, SCS will have Pacific Justice Institute petition the California Supreme Court for an appeal.

Sincerely,
Terry Neven
Sunland Christian School, Principal
Sylmar CA

The Pacific Justice Institute has a petition to Gov. Schwarzenegger requesting help protecting home-schooling.

I agree. He’s as big a RINO as there is. Again a reflection on the state of the Republican Party in California.

I fully expect him to run for Boxer’s or Feinstein’s Senate seat, (whichever) when his term as governator is up. Wouldn’t surprise me if he ran as a Democrat by then.

    Come on…

There shouldn’t be home schooling. It could cut down on the wages of the public school teachers.

And everyone knows that dating students these days is more and more expensive.

Yep. But seeing as most of these parents don’t indoctrinate their kids with revisionist American history, politically-correct English, shady math, and all-sex-is-glorious-especially-homosexuality Health classes, it won’t stand.

Like I said, the First Amendment (which I believe weighs heavily in parents’ decision to homeschool) no longer applies to those who aren’t politically correct or liberal.

California does look so-o-o good when viewing from places currently experiencing tornadoes, floods, triple digit heat AND humidity….until…

you realize who’s running the place (into the ground)!!!!!

What’s absolutely sickening is that parents need legal protections to educate their own children. Education went from being an achievement to a right, and from a right to a form of bondage and control.

(I was home schooled. I think I turned out alright.)

I persnolly do not feel that home schooling is an option I would consider for my children.

That being said, I believe that parents have the right and the duty to make a decision on how they want to educate their children and the government should not impose regulations or restrictions on this right.

I find that this scenarios trumps the arguement frequently used by those pro-choice

    “My child my choice”

I imagine the courts will rule against the home schoolers. They NEED the dumbing down of the populace. The best wat to accomplish that task is public schools (and TV of course).

I pulled my kids out of school this last year and homeschooled them. I loved it. Unfortunately, they will be going back to school next year. I work part time (6+ hours a day, M-F), and with prices going up, I am needing to work full time. Homeschooling was the best thing I could’ve done for my kids, and I wish I could keep doing it.

Oh, and I’m in Washington state.

This Californian started Homeschooling 20 +++++ years ago…..There was no ” official” law then. In my humble opinion…it’s better to have no “official” H.S. law. “Official” laws mean government control.

That the government beleives it has a “right” to our children that somehow trumps the rights of parents is extremely frightening to me.

We homeschool in Oklahoma - a great place to homeschool for anyone who wants to come on out.

    Ditto.

I hold out little hope that justice prevails in California though. Reading this article today dashed those hopes even more. It’s like a crack addict being the presiding judge over a trial against a crack dealer.

We are homeschoolers in California and we are still hopeful that a positive outcome will happen. Our public schools are in terrible financial shape and could not even tolerate having an influx of hundreds of kids to already burdened schools. It just. can’t. happen.

Of course, I realize that I am just optimistic, but I feel as if my reasons are grounded in reality.

Lousy public schools (probably not all, but the preponderance), and overcrowding due to liberal (pun intended) attitudes to illegal alien invaders and their anchor babies are all excellent reasons for homeschooling or at least vouchers, but the teacher’s unions will have none of that. You can’t prop up bad teachers with no students.

Grabbing the minds of children is the first step to a successful takeover of society by the state, particularly dictators and socialists/communists/liberals. Remember the Hitler Jungend (Youth)? Heck, look at the Palestinians, who fuel centuries long hatred of Jews with freaking cartoon characters! While these are relatively extreme cases, the theory and practice is the same.

When you combine that with the remarkable performance of homeschooled children, its perpetuation should be a fait accompli, but you can be sure that the Dems, bought and paid for by the teacher’s unions, will fight it tooth and nail.
