About 180 million gallons of oil seeps into the ocean from the seafloor each year. Many natural oil seeps occur off the coast of California and in the Gulf. Wouldn't it make sense to harvest this oil rather than continuing to allow it to pollute our oceans and just go to waste?

I for one think that the time has come for our country to end its dependence on foreign sources for domestic energy.

Chosing my position on the issue is easy defining the correct solution is not. If we have the methods in place to safely drill in ANWR and offshore, lets do so but let us also invest in increasing nuclear energy to lower dependence on fossil fuels for home heating (especially on the east coast) and other use cases that can be replaced with clean energy

"obscene profits" - and this is the new head of the Republican Party talking! Who defines what "obscene" is? Why, McVain, of course. He in his infinite wisdom will decide who gets to make how much. Tell me how this is different from the liberals/leftists/DemocRATS, please tell me?

It seems both the leftists and McCain would rather have everybody living at a subsistence level, with no "obscene" profits for investments, growth, capital improvements, discretionary spending, charity giving and wealth building.

What a bunch of frickin' morons.

Obscene profits? how about NPR ( for profit entities), public TV( for profit entities), Planned Parenthood, Soros holdings, Pelosi holdings, Fed'l Government... et al.... I'd put the profit margins of oil companies against all the above anytime. Anyone who goes after oil companies( O'Reilly included) is playing fear mongering, demagogic and lying games.
Drill offshore, in the Rockies and in ANWR and start following the lead of Norway, Denmark and the Netherlands who drill off shore out the wazoo. Oh and stop all the boutique gasolines that are required to be refined... what stupidity.

"It is in fact possible to have an “obscene profit”. In cases where the free market has been corrupted, as would be the case with a rigged industry, an uneven playing field, an environment in which free riding is permitted, etc. Appropriate rules are in fact necessary for a free market to operate correctly."

OK, so you say. Now how about some examples, and how about some measure of this "obscenity" you speak of? How bout some examples that are not already illegal, such as price-fixing. How about telling how us this "level playing field" works: what is that we (who?) are supposed to see is "level": cost of labor, availability of capital, having to import raw materials rather than use locally available resources....

Just askin for something concrete, is all...........

Please don't leave us listening to the sound of crickets here....

Sure, send him to ANWR and let the mosquitoes eat him alive. Short term solutions won’t fix anything. ANWR won’t solve the energy crisis. It would only extend US oil’s viability another few decades and wouldn’t impact pricing at all.

Sounds like Democrat talking points. No one knows for sure how much oil is undiscovered in Alaska, but most agree, it's a lot. The incredibly biased way the left refers to ANWR, or any oil find is this; find whatever "expert" they can to get the lowest possible estimate of oil in a given location. Then they assume that 100% of US oil is going to come from this place, and say it will last for "only" 6 months or two years or whatever. Not only is that torturing the truth beyond recognition, it has nothing at all to do with whether oil should be pumped from ANWR or any other place WHERE LOTS OF OIL IS LOCATED. It's the equivalent of the Saudi's finding a huge new pool of oil and saying, "don't drill there, it will only supply the world for two years."

Also, why does no one talk about the effect domestic drilling would have on the huge trade imbalance? Estimates are that from ANWR, off the coast and interior drilling we could easily pump another 3 million barrels/day. Whether this oil is used domestically, or put on the world market, at $130/barrels X 3,000,000/barrels this is $390,000,000/day off of the trade deficit, a lot of money even in government terms.

So, Iran recognizes that they have a strategic vulnerability being hamstringed by the need to import fuel and actually build new refineries to increase their production capacity.

So, why can't we recognize our own vulnerability and begin our own domestic oil exploration and building of new refineries?

The Republican Party calls and sends me request for money on a regular basis. Too bad all my extra money is going into my fuel tank. It is costing me $85-90.00 per fill-up on my vehicle right now, whereas I was paying $50-65.00 per fill-up a short while back.

Sorry if campaign contributions are not quite up to your liking Senator McCain. We regular, everyday Americans are feeling a little pinch ourselves these days.

Maverick? Hmmmm? I can think of a few other descriptors at this juncture but they could well get me banned from here for violating the terms of use.
