A little background on the Father’s Day holiday, via the North County Times:
The young woman sat in a Spokane, Wash., church on Sunday in 1909 listening to the minister praise a new holiday, Mother’s Day, which had recently been enacted.
Sonora Dodd, then 28, had memories of her mother —- who died when Sonora was a teenager —– but it was her father who had been the guiding force in raising she and her siblings.
Born in Arkansas in 1882, Sonora and her family had come west to a farm in Eastern Washington. When her mother died in 1898, Sonora’s father, William Smart, a Civil War veteran, was left to raise the couple’s six children.
As she listened to the Mother’s Day sermon at the Centenary Presbyterian Church, Sonora thought it would also be appropriate to honor fathers, like her own, and the seeds of Father’s Day were first sewn.
Today, there are 66.3 million fathers in the country, reports the U.S. Census Bureau.
Nearly 95 million Father’s Day cards will be given this year, making it the fourth largest card-sending occasion of the year.
Yes, and neckties still lead the list of Father’s Day gifts, followed by hammers, wrenches and screwdrivers.
It was a much different world nearly a century ago when Sonora Dodd sat down with Dr. Conrad Bluhm, her church’s pastor, to write the original Father’s Day resolution that was approved by the Spokane Ministerial Alliance at its June 6, 1910, meeting held at the YMCA.
By mayoral proclamation, the first Father’s Day was held on June 19, 1910, in Spokane…
…In 1967, she wrote a letter to her old church giving details of that first Father’s Day celebration there, said Janet Hauck, the archivist for Whitworth College in Spokane, which provided a copy of the missive.
“Dr. Bluhm chose for his sermon topic of the service, ‘The Knighthood That Never Retreats,’” wrote Dodd. “With my family, John Bruce and our infant son whom we called Jack, I attended this service. To me this was a very sacred occasion.”
Each father in attendance was presented with a red rose.
The letter continued: “There was special music and our first Father’s Day at Centenary was something quite worth remembering.”

We have a twofer in this house today it is also my Birthday today, 51 years on planet earth. Thanks to my Mom and Dad (whom God took from us on 15 Sep 89), who did a fairly good job of raising me with great patience, love, and a pretty good morale compass.
To all the Men deployed in our defense on this day a very special Father’s Day and thank you for all you do for this country. Having spent many of these special days deployed I wish you a safe return to your loved ones upon the completion of your tour of duty.
Father’s Day reminds me of Rudyard Kipling’s poem, “If,” that I keep on my son’s wall.

I have gone but a mere 37 laps around the sun so far….but the last 11 years, since my first son was born, have been the best of those 37. Now I have 2 sons….and I thank them for showing me what life is really about.

My wife and daughter got me a really cool collection of stuff to wash the car with. My 2 year old daughter picked out the bucket herself!

“Babies’ Daddies” — Good one, Michelle. Hopefully by this time next year the term will have run its course. Probably not, but it sure is a dumb saying. (Michelle Obama, the term applies to deadbeat and unwed dads, ya doofus.)
And to all kids young and adult, appreciate what you’ve got. You could have ended up with a deadbeat dad — a baby-daddy — like I did.
No worries on my end, though. I’ve lived my whole life without a dad around, so I’ve had no one to miss. If anything, I’ve learned that I don’t want kids of my own until I’m willing and able (which may be never). Not having a dad doesn’t bother me, and my mom did a pretty good job, I think.
So Father’s Day is pretty inconsequential to me personally. Not really a humbug occasion. Instead, it’s just one less reason to have to go out and buy a present each year.
Happy Father’s Day to all the Dad’s. Hope you have a wonderful day and are appreciated for all that you do for your families.

This is my first Father’s Day without a Father to call. I know I am certainly not alone I just didn’t think about it until I got calls from my kids this morning.

spackle: It’s very sad what you wrote, but there are sad things in life. It’s very easy to focus on everything that’s wrong in life, but it might be better to simply pray over it, and pray for your enemies, and pray for those who’ve let you down…..as human beings will always do.
The only true “Father” is God, anyway….and God will always be there for you!

I can from a father’s point of view, understand Spackle and his post. 15 years ago, I lost contact with my 3 daughters, and couldn’t find them. Courts, of course, were no help. My eldest found me back in November to a joyeous reunion. On top of that, I decided to move down near them. Today was our first real Fathers Day in a very long time. It was great! I don’t know Spackle’s situation with his dad; sometimes things can get all messed up. Maybe in the future, times and minds will change and perhaps a reunion too, can be made. A prayer for you. Also, prayers to all our fathers in uniform, unable to make it home today. A very special Fathers’ Day to you too.

This morning I went to brunch with my husband, father, and father-in-law. For me, there was no one more influential in my development than my father.
It’s so tragic that things like feminism have undermined the importance of fathers. They are essential, and no mother – no matter how wonderful she is – can replace a father (that works the other way, too).
To all the Dads out there: Thank you.

My Father’s Day began with me watching the news and sipping my coffee, before my wife and children took me to Cracker Barrel for breakfast. There’s nothin’ like the Cracker Barrell Country Boy’s Breakfast to start my father’s day.
My 7 year old son had made me a card and put one his green bead Mardi Gras necklaces in is for me. He remembered that green is my favorite color. He insisted on me wearing it to Cracker Barrel, while he wore one of his blue ones, so we would match. We looked cool.
I spent the remainder of my day buying a new car that gets about 37 mpg on the hhighway to replace my full-size 4×4 pickup for daily driving. Gonna miss driving my truck on a regular basis. But, this new one gets better than three times the mileage of my truck on a good day. *sigh*
Oh, well. I guess I have to change some with the times.

Marshall Russ (#39)–except for the kids calling me part(I went over to my brother’s Father’s Day party where I am godfather to his daughter), my day was like yours. I agree with you completely, all parts, of your posting.
Sounds like everyone had a great day. Fantastic. I, for one, got a BBQ tool set (in a case), home depot gift card, and a framed picture of our family get-together on Memorial Day. Happy dad here.
We had a great Father’s Day here too. My husband got a wonderful phone call from our recently redeployed son and they talked for an hour. It was wonderful to not have to hang up after 5 minutes! Last father’s day my husband was in training and my son was in Baghdad… they didn’t get to talk at all.
The only downside was the Washington Post targeted our blog on Thursday so we were still wading through hate mail and processing comments left on the blog that linked to us… comments wishing our son were dead, had limbs blown off or would have serious mental problems. Gotta just love the lunatic Obama supporting freaks.
