The LA Times says the NRA won, and it might as well disband

By see-dubya  •  June 15, 2008 02:01 AM

Don’t do it! It’s a trap!

Americans now show little interest in gun control. Just half want tougher rules for gun sales, compared with nearly two-thirds in 2000.

“The issue has been essentially removed from the political agenda,” said Robert Spitzer, a political scientist at the State University of New York in Cortland who has written extensively about the politics of gun control….

Yet that very triumph may prove politically perilous for Republicans hoping to put John McCain in the White House. Two years ago, GOP candidates backed by the NRA lost in a number of swing states, including Virginia, Missouri and Wisconsin, that could play pivotal roles this fall.

The article goes on to deliver a few examples of points on which Obama is weak on guns (curiously, they missed this one and this one). They admit that guns may have decided the 2000 election.

Yet somehow they don’t think it will matter in this one.

Good; let them keep thinking that. I think once word of BO’s anti-gun agenda gets around, it will decide the election.

The only problem See-Dubya is that John McCain’s own credibility on fighting gun control is as phony as Obama-I have a very long memory.

John McCain too had no problem throwing the NRA under the Bus whenever he wanted

I also remember another RINO -the father of the current US president who said he was conservative, and then when he got in in 1988 revealed himself to be a liberal.

The only reason why I voted at all in the 2000 election was that gun owners would be in the perfect position to force GWB to not renew the assault weapon ban or else face defeat.

In a perverse way it was fortunate that GWB’s Iraq occupation was not the clear political booster for GWB in 2004 that he had hoped, because it prevented him from trying to push renewal of the assualt weapon ban.

Never give away your vote to any of these people–make ‘em squirm and make it hurt for every blessed portion of your vote.

It could indeed be a significant factor, were the Republicans to aggressively and fearlessly pursue it. Wait, did I just use “Republican” and “aggressively and fearlessly” in the same sentence? I’m sorry. How very foolish of me. What will happen is that somewhere a Republican will say something that could be construed as supportive of gun rights, McCain will hear about it and go ballistic — Don’t you know that a member of group X was once killed by a gun?! — and in the name of outreach that will be that.

President McCain? Not going to happen people, which is good news of sorts.

Emperor Obama the First? All but certain.

Actually, and sadly the NRA has been disbanding itself in a fashion with their dealings and compromises concerning OUR Right to Keep and Bear Arms, though I am a Life Member. Membership is steady but we are seeing more influence from other RKBA groups such as the Gun Owners of America, Jews For The Preservation Of Firearms Ownership, Open Carry and so on. And there are the state organizations working to protect our rights. In Arizona we have the Arizona Civil Defense League. Find and join your state’s group.

Yes, agreed “Don’t do it! It’s a trap!” It is a trap in that they may not mean what they say as in they may even be lying. For some time now I have made the Right to Keep and Bear Arms my number one issue, it is my litmus test. If a candidate fails on that he is toast. I might vote for the SOB if needed but not one dime. And I only contribute to candidates anymore. The National Party and the two Republican Congressional Committees have supported too many RINOs v true Conservatives.

Just get on the mailing lists of these alternate Rights groups and you will get alerts to candidates that just might beat a liberal or RINO.

Good call love2rumba and so true. I always love how people will say that someone, like McCain is 85% on an issue, but when that issue is a constitutional matter, I don’t see how that 15% is a not an attempt to erode our liberties. If you vote 9 out of 10 times for a 1% reduction in our taxes, but that 1 time is a 15% increase, am I supposed to love you?

Besides, the NRA to McCain is a HUGE special interest and according to our 1st amendment loving Congress and McCain, special interests are bad, because you know, they represent the interest of people and all and how can that be good? Right, er, maybe. Hard to follow logic when there is none, sorry.

The last thing that needs to happen is for the NRA and other pro-2nd amendment groups to abandon their efforts. There’s still a ton of work to do with regards to castle doctrine laws, concealed carry laws, etc. We could always get a shock and the Supreme Court decides that it isn’t an individual right. That likely won’t happen but we still don’t have a clue how far a decision in favor of individual rights will roll back gun control laws.

The problem is that as long as the Supreme Court is beset with non-constructionists, they could say just about anything on the 2nd Amendment…this in a nutshell is the problem: The Supreme Court is increasingly irrelevant, because they do not read the document and adjust their decisions for original intent…”precedent” has become a bobbing and weaving non-squitor term.

If they don’t respect our Second Amendment rights on the court as plain as it is, then their opinion does not matter to me….

The danger of this though is good people will get killed by criminals and government elites who will use these wacko edicts like the one where dangerous foreigners have the same Constitutional rights as we do, and the non-politically accountable judiciary will decide what goes and what doesn’t go on the War on Terror according to these wunderkind…and worse your neighbor hood “public servant” will send goon squads to confiscate your guns at the slightest excuse

If you go to the link that Atheling provided and click on the link for the gun shows you will see that they teach the courses necessary for a CC at the show. Although, a number of people are qualified without having to go through the course. My military record established my qualifications. I went through the procedure at the show in Fredericksburg (next one is 1-2 Aug). I got the FL license rather than the VA one because they have an agreement with 37 other states to recognize their CC. It took about 2 mos after sending the money and paperwork to FL to receive my CC.
