To thoroughly train the new Sisters to assist Iraqi Police, the Sisters studied topics such as police ethics, human rights, women’s issues, working in a terrorist environment, female searches and first aid. The Sisters also performed live-fire training with AK-47 rifles and 9mm pistols as a confidence booster. The final stage before graduation involved putting their newly learned skills to the test with on-the-job training at entry control points to Ferris Town.

One of the new graduates said the Iraqi Police of Ferris Town told her about this job opportunity. She said this is her first job and it is a new challenge that she is happy and brave enough to take on.
“I joined to help the Iraqi Police and to help my family,” she said. “I’m proud to get this job. I’m proud to help the Iraqi Police. I’m going to make the city safer. I can prevent illegal passengers in the city. I’m so proud, I’m so happy.”
Somewhere, I think Fern Holland is smiling.

P.S. I once held a Glock like the Sister in the burqa is doing, and I still have a scar on my thumb-knuckle to prove it. It was embarrassing turning in a rental gun with blood on it.
Actually, that happened to me twice. I’m kind of dumb that way.

I have find that the Walther .22 cal a guy I work with owns has no kick at all to speak of. Granted, it might take more than a couple of shots to bring down a charging jihadi…
I think I came close to breaking a rib the first time I fired a 30-06 deer rifle.
I taught my wife to shoot, too. She just couldn’t get how to shoot my Ruger P89 9mm. I think the grips were too big for her hands. But, she does pretty well with my S&W Model 66 .357 loaded with .38 Special’s.
There is a wonderful complimentary movement to the SOI and it’s called the Daughters of Iraq. They are able to keep citizens safe by checking women in ways that men are not allowed to. They are your culturally sensitive, quintessential, “Charlie’s Angels” — maybe Charlie Company’s Angels.
Very cool story, and I hope that woman’s aim is good!
Ed–it’s not so much the kick as that the Glock sits very low in your hands, and when the slide whizzes back with each shot it slices out a chunk of thumb if you use that grip. Which I habitually do.
I don’t have any trouble with other semi-autos, just Glocks.

Ed-that’s why you always start off with a .22 rifle and/or pistol and move up. Next time find a friend with an Ar-15 and try that…you’ll like it much better than the .30-06 in terms of recoil (and you will have unbroken ribs)

It is good to see more women learning how to properly use a firearm. A lesson many women in this country should be learning too. Mrs. Boomer prefers revolvers to semi-auto pistols and has no problem placing very tight groupings in the center of mass.
I think this photo is just as inspirational as the famous ones of Iraqi women with purple fingers from voting. Let’s mail copies to all libs who said that Iraqis are mentally/emotionally capable only of living under dictatorship!
Individual responsibility, individual empowerment - these are things that, once learned, can never be taken from a person, and they’re passed on to the next generation. Good job, Marines! You’ve done more in Iraq than just beat back the terrorists.
It seems to be pretty natural for people that haven’t done a lot of shooting. Whenever I take people to the range for the first time, the inevitably put their weak-hand thumb right behind the slide. So far, I have always caught them before they pulled the trigger. I can only imagine what the feels like.

I’d done a lot of shooting, but mostly with revolvers, where the slide-whacking isn’t a problem.
There’s actually more, and worse to the Glock story. I was with a group of people who rented a Glock for our lane (I rented a 1911). I told the guy my story about busting my thumb with a Glock the first time I fired one, and he nodded and then proceeded to do exactly what I warned him about and opened up his thumb.
Then he let me shoot the Glock, and I did the same stupid thing.
My 72yo mother goes everywhere with her “little friend” a Charter Arms Bulldog pug in .44 Special. I have not doubts that she can handle herself against all threats 4 and 2 legged.

At least Iraqi women are learning invaluable skills and apparently more inclined to use guns for self-defense than your average run of the mill liberal. Maybe we just need to send them all to a 3rd world

See-dub, that is why I usually carry a revolver. Revolvers aren’t sexy like Glocks but revolvers have no safeties, won’t jam, is always ready to fire, and they don’t have slides violently slamming back after each shot.
See! Our military is stretched so thin that we have to resort to arming Iraqi women to fight for our Marines.

I have a revolver and a semi-automatic. The clip is faster loading than the revolver, but they both make a statement.

Wow! I know, it is only one human interest story probably CIA staged propaganda from… Oh, that’s one of thousands of stories? We better not let that make national news, the Coast Guard and police can’t handle that many bridge jumpers all at once.
Heck, my dad who’d been a cop for over 20 years at the time did the very same thing when he bought his Glock. He’d used only revolvers (mostly .357) and wanted something more modern. He took it out in the back yard (we lived in the middle of nowhere), set up a target and POW, tore a hunk of skin right off his left thumb. It was the first and last time that happened.
My point is that it’s very common. As for women with guns, my wife has a Rossi .38 but she’s looking to upgrade. Fortunately my sister-in-law and her husband own a gun shop.
I may need to use a different sighting system next time I go to the range.
Be sure and have both your thumb and pinkie extended ala “tea and crumpets” to look even more gansta. ‘Course the weapon might fly out of your hand, but it’ll look cool…
Both thumbs pointing toward the target and you won’t have those embarrassing moments with blood on rental guns.
Got my Springfield XD 9mm subcompact on my belt at all times. Shooting it is a breeze. Almost no kick, and accurate too. Glocks are good guns, but I like my XD.

Charter Arms .44 pug? 240 grain full metal jacket coming out at 1180 fps will pierce military grade three kevlar. Though it does make my wrist a bit sore if I fire all five real fast.
Cut thumb? Had a buddy from Alabama used to go to shotgun shoots every weekend. I never could figure shotguns with scopes but even worse? He came to work every Monday morning with a bruise over his right eye from the scope.
Breaking a rib with an 06? Not sure I even want to know. I have had a bruised cheek or two from the 06 and my .323 (8mm) when I shot from a rest but a broken rib?
Hmmmmmm, me thinks me glad me grew up shooting. Mind you, shooting the ten gauge in order to get my first .22 knocked my butt for a loop or three. I would have bounced a little farther but the tree stopped me … fortunately?

Now I compete with a pistol regularly.
There’s just something about a lady who’ll stick up for herself…
What a helluva good idea….Bring the women into the 21st century by arming them and teaching them how and when….that will stop some of that sharia crap real quick….I love it….it oughta be mandatory for every woman to carry concealed….Man, can you imagine what they could strap on under those burkas….Men would be walking 3 steps behind…and very quietly…

Great story, SeeDub. I got bit the first time I fired a slide action pistol too but it was one of those little .22 pocket guns and it got the top of my shooting hand. My left hand is never anywhere near the grip, it supports the wrist and forearm, but then my Dad was a former Marine SGT si I learned correctly from the start.
The infidel instructor is a woman.
Lots of range practice ( and a few bandaids) has a way of correcting those pesky nuances with hand guns.

Why is it I can finally see “womens” groups (NOW, etc) in the West getting, er, up in arms? Not over women in the Middle East being treated like property. But by a Marine teaching them how to handle a, gasp, gun. Don’t they understand guns are evil? Don’t they understand guns cause violence?

As for MrsTwoFoot, even though she has small hands, she is a demon with my Glock 21. I was worried when I first started getting her familiar with it because of the large size. She took to it immediately. She may have been Army, but she does okay with a pistol.

You need to use a consistent grip for all guns you pick up not just the Glock.
If you have large male hands you may have to have put on an aftermarket grip that will fatten the grip around your glock to train you to keep your thumbs out of the way.
The best thing about the Glock is that anyone can take it apart down to the last part and reassemble it for repairs.
All you need to do is get the appropriate video..all other guns require a gunsmith-especially revolvers.
Glocks are repair friendly. That is why I own two model 21s and a model 32.
Never buy a gun you can’t shoot well with and have trouble repairing for things like trigger springs, extractor and ejectors.
yeah, but have you ever tried deep cleaning a revolver around the trigger parts, and then re-assembling the thing?
Get a video on how to take apart a Glock, actually try it, and you’ll see what I mean.
Glock Around The Clock, Dudes!
Shooter, Rumba, funny you should mention that. I was actually in a gun store today and asked the proprietor about a couple of my top choices I’m considering for home defense.
The guy behind the counter shot ‘em both down and suggested… a .45 Glock. I didn’t feel like embarrassing myself again today under my real name with this story.
But I just can’t warm up to those things.
Guns are made of WOOD and STEEL, preferably BLUED and CASE-HARDENED, dagnabit.
Live coverage from the LA Riots in the early 90’s freaked me out so bad that I went to a gun range a few towns away to learn how to shoot all types of guns.
The instructor and owner was a first generation Cuban-American who had family who lost everything when Castro rolled in.
He told me that Castro and his boys first documented every citizen’s gun and then confiscated them all.
He taught me the vital importance of our 2nd Amendment.
The FOUNDERS knew their history…through the ages..tyrants have always taken the means of people to defend themselves and thus subject them.
Once subjected–the tyrant can take anything that belongs to any individual.
Thus>>>>the SECOND AMMENDMENT!
Well, See-Dubya, a person’s gun choice is ultimately very personal. The botom line is that you practice with it a lot and feel comfortable with it.
I’ve had one Glock model 21 that is 15 years old…no problem with the frame, slide and other parts…thousands of rounds through it…plus if gunsmiths start disappearing, i can get in one and replace the parts of which spares I already have on hand.
See-Dubya, I used to be the same way about Glocks. Never saw the appeal. It looked about as comfortable as a brick with trigger. Until I got my dad one for Christmas one year. After that, I had to have my own.
I carry a Glock 21 with high capacity magazines. Not only is it reliable, maintenance friendly, and fun. But there is something extremely reassuring about having 13 rounds of .45 cal Hydra-Shok in one magazine. Heavy, but worth it.
Great example of enpowerment I’m sure you wont find the MSN talking about very much.
I also favor a revolver over an automatic. Simple, easy to maintain, won’t jam, and no pesky thumb-bustin’ slide.
And one .357 trumps a whole clip of 9mm. Stopping power? A .357 hollowpoint makes a hole big enough to plant a tree in.
Last time I was at my local indoor range there was a young guy with a purty-lookin, gangsta-type 9 mil, poppin’ rounds like they do in Hollywood.
As I was doing my tight 3-shot groups, with .38 waddcutters, he was spraying clip after clip.

All that time I was thinking to myself…

Ferris Town was part of my area of operations until we handed it off to the Marines in December 07. I don’t miss it a bit. The only armed female I saw was one that had a pistol hidden in her burqa when some of our Troopers entered her house, and it fell out. The guys detained her, and talk about a huge stink. The locals do not like you rolling up their women, I can tell you that. Otherwise, this was a pretty calm AO, and the Iraqi Police were pretty proficient, if still a shady bunch.
Revolvers do jam…I know from personal experience….fortunately such occurances are rare with proper cleaning.
