Spike Lee on Obama: There’s “gonna be a real Chocolate City!”

By Michelle Malkin  •  June 20, 2008 07:50 AM

Still bitter from his spanking at the hands of Clint Eastwood (background here), conspiracy nut and race-monger Spike Lee is clinging to Barack Obama for revenge.

He told a film festival crowd this week that he has gathered 1,000 hours of footage of his Obamessiah on the campaign trail and will produce a documentary about the candidate. The dour director instantly cheered up. Via SilverDocs, Lee gloats:

Discussing his Hurricane Katrina epic When the Levees Broke, Lee referenced the current flooding in the midwest and said, “The infrastructure of this country is crumbling, and money’s going elsewhere.” He paused, then at quadruple the volume: “That’s gonna change, though…gonna be a real Chocolate City!” He went on to drop the news that his longtime editor Sam Pollard has been filming Obama throughout the primary season and has already captured 1,000 hours of footage for a documentary being produced by Edward Norton. When Kennedy began a question with the phrase, “If Obama’s gonna become president…”, Lee interrupted. “There is no if! It changes everything…it’s gonna be Before Obama, and After Obama. And I’m gonna be at that inauguration, too.”

Lee, who believes “someone’s” paying Jeremiah Wright to diss Obama, will be an honored guest at the Democrat National Convention and takes credit for the Obamas’ marriage.

Spike Lee: Soon to be Obama’s NEA chairman in the new Chocolate City?

Shudder.

Speaking of race conspiracies, Michelle Obama channels Spike and panders to racial paranoia. See here and here.

I hope Clint or someone like him points out to old Spike that the words ‘chocolate city’ never were uttered by Dr. M.L.King and that Dr. King was working towards the civil rights movement ignoring skin color and towards quality of character. …….. Oh, now I see the real problem……old Spike doesn’t have any quality of character.

But with even black conservatives saying they may vote for the Obamessiah BECAUSE HE IS (half) BLACK and the over 90% of blacks supporting this sophomoronic racist is incontrovertible evidence that the racism in the USA is on the part of blacks, not whites.

No argument on the bit_boy comment (I agree), but the rest of the commentary seems particularly and primarily focussed on a continuing frustration with the successful careers of race baiters like Sharpton, and the fact that any criticism of Obama is twisted into a racial attack.

If whites do not vote for Obama for no other reason than he is black (well, half anyway), it is no more or less racist than blacks that vote for him because he is black.

As for me, I will vote for the man (or woman) that will do the best job, regardless of melanin content, or age, or sex. And no, I am not thrilled by McCain, but he has a record of “achievement” that you can look up. The more I look into Obama, the less impressed I get. Great oratory is a major qualification for the Wrights of the world, not quite so much for presidents (although it helps).

Most inappropriate. If the “n” word is the only thing you can think of in regards to Spike Lee, than you do see his pigmentation as his main flaw.

On the one hand, the “n” word is just a mispronunciation of the Spanish word “Negro”, meaning black, but since it has such perjorative connotations, and tends to mark the user of the word as ignorant and racist, it should not be used.

Now, Spike clearly has a problem with white people, seems to suffer from a Napoleon (small man) complex, and hasn’t made a decent movie in almost two decades.

Robert Byrd can talk about white n******s all he wants, and claim it isn’t racism, but from the words original useage, it is a racist word.

BTW, I doubt the site owners appreciate that sentiment, or the shadow of racism it casts over all the posters here.

In May of 1999 The New York Post reported that Lee said of National Rifle Association President Charlton Heston, “Shoot him with a .44 Bulldog.” Lee contended, “I intended it as ironic, as a joke to show how violence begets more violence,” Lee said Thursday.

I’m also amazed how separate people live their lives… different churches for different races… different areas… kind of sad, really…

I’ve never been to an all white or all black church…but yes, sad.

But what can you do when you have idiots like Spike Lee who say such things and energise racism in the black community too?

we see what people like you do!

I have used the “c-word” twice. Probably shouldn’t have. But if you think that’s even close to the same league as the word bit_boy is using, then you are incredibly out of touch. If you think an emergency poop in the woods is the same as calling someone that word, then you are hopeless.

I think Spike Lee is an obnoxious clown, but I actually liked ‘Do the Right Thing’, although my symapthies were for the pizza shop owner who was working for a living, and not the obnoxious malcontent with the boom box.

I could probably go on for a while about this. Radio Raheem wasn’t the malcontent. He was a follower who was convinced he was doing the right thing. It was Buggin’ Out who was the malcontent. His quixotic attempts to force superficial changes at Sal’s were the problem. The statement here is clear. If people as smart as Buggin’ Out were as dedicated to real change as they were to making waves, then the black community would be better off. Surely that’s a lesson that would be appreciated by all the Jesse haters out there.

As for Sal, he claimed to love the neighborhood. But when push came to shove, he was using the same racist language as his hateful son. He needed to be punished in some way.

Does anyone think that “Do the Right Thing.” is the perfect synopsis of Spike Lee’s, and Rev. Wright’s, (and the Obama’s??) white-hating culture?

Sure, it’s just a movie. Just a movie whose mob riot forshadowed the L.A. riots of 1992.

In the movie, the white people are racist because they didn’t put African-Americans pictures on their restaurant wall. Also, because they tried to prevent a customer from disturbing the peace in his restaurant with his “boom box” (sorry for the 80’s lingo there)

In the movie, the police are brutal and oppressive. F tha police. Remember?

In the movie, these two factors plus mitigating factors like the heat justify a race riot.

The white store owner lost everything he had worked hard for. Why? Because it was a long hot summer. Because he believed not having pictures of black folk on the walls was not racist. Because he involved the police when thugs took over his restaurant. Because he was “out-of-place” in a black area of town. To Spike, these are legitimate and justfiable reasons.

What do you think Spike means by “Do the Right Thing”?

Spike has tried to make white-hating revenge violence chic. What do you think Obama’s election means to him? Soaring Hope and Lofty Change or a chance to turn the tables on The Man?

For those so preoccupied with race like Spike Lee, it will change nothing because the problem is inside them, not outside them. If Lee is happier seeing people with black skin than white skin, he’s got a big problem.

Putting blacks in high places to cure prejudice is the same mindset as beating your wife. Say you don’t get along with your wife, so you beat her, as if that’s going to change things, or change her. Sorry, you can’t change anyone by beating them. The one person you can change is yourself.

Point to me one person that will no longer be a bigot if we put Obama in the White House. Spike Lee? No, sorry. It won’t do a thing for his bigotry. You can try to beat America over the head with a black President, but America will only change its heart on its own, if it wants to. And frankly, I think America’s heart is pretty much in the right place now. There will always be the bigots like Spike Lee. Not much we can do about that.

George Washington Carver is responsible for the entire peanut industry in the US. Since I’m addicted to peanut butter I wake up every morning and say “Hail Mr. Carver”.

Charles S. Dutton was in prison for murder, and turned his life around.
James Earl Jones overcame poverty and stuttering to become one of Hollywoods most famous voices.
There are others whom I can’t remember their names. A black man invented the gas mask. A black doctor discovered a way to preserve blood. A black doctor first cut into the adominal cavity.

With so many legitmate role models who overcame hardship without sitting around crying about how things are so unfair and someone owes me, why are whiners held up as role models?

Spike Lee is one of those politically correct guys that the New York Times and the three networks worship. Mr. Lee views any negative reviews of his movies as racist. He has so intimidated movie critics and network correspondents that he gets an adoring response to even the worst movies that he makes. And Mr. Lee has been openly antiSemitic in his movies. His movie “Mo Betta Blues” was a virtual fountain of antiSemitism. He had two despicable characters named “Mo and Josh Flatbush” so that Mr. Lee could telegraph to his audience that the villains were Jewish. These two characters, who were given Jewish names from 50 years ago, also spoke in nasal tones with a stereotypical Brooklyn accent. They were money grubbers who sucked up all the money that Black jazz musicians earned. Siskel and Ebert, two liberal movie critics, both decided that what Lee did was antiSemitic. The late Gene Siskel pointed out that Lee allowed no genuinely decent emotions or traits from the characters Mo and Josh Flatbush. So who would come to Lee’s immediate defense? You probably guessed it already! Yep, it was indeed the New York Times. The New York Times handed Lee the entire oped page to respond to his critics and Lee went on ad nauseum about racism in the movie industry. But because Lee is a media darling, no criticism of Lee is allowed.

The interests of America and society are secondary. The list of special interest groups grows each year as well, so there is littel chance the course will reverse itself. Depressing, but I don’t see how the US will maintain the current system for another 50 years. Chaos is all that can follow competing factions for limited and dwindling resources.

Mrs. Obama stopped that. The prospect of white doctors performing a trial with black teenage girls summoned the specter of the Tuskegee syphilis experiment of the mid-20th century …

My question is, have we taken a good look at decisions made in the past careers of Michelle O, or Obama himself as a “community organizer”? Whatever he did as a community organizer, he’s bound to do more of the same as Prez of the US. I’m sure if there’s anything controversial about it he’ll spin it like he spun his Trinity Church and Rev. Wright Sunday service as a time of good music and quiet, prayerful reflection. Fine. Let’s hear it. McCain’s 25 year legislative history is well-known. What was Obama doing as a “community organizer”? It sounds like it had a lot of political overtones. What kind of political decisions did he make at that time?

I guess I beg to differ. But clearly, you enjoy using that word — enough to advocate for its continued usage (we all have our causes we believe in. Yours is the preservation of racial slurs, apparently.). So have at it. Just don’t talk about all the “racist blacks” in the same breath, because the irony is overwhelming. Especially for anyone who reads this blog with any regularity, and knows this kind of thing happens fairly often here.

If Mrs. Malkin held herself to the same standard that she held Mr. Obama, then she would have to concede that it’s racists who are using her website and supporting her.

Absolutely. Say what you want about Kos and Huffington, at least the comments sections aren’t rife with racist slurs. I’ve seen this time and time again here. The shock value’s been lost, but it never ceases to prove exactly how some people really think.

Spike understands how to get publicity. And his good fortune is that when he says something outrageous, it gets publicized.

He doesn’t always mean what he says – as they said in the Godfather movie “It’s business, not personal.”

His children go to a prestigious NYC private school in Riverdale, NY, with tuition of $30-35,000 per kid per year. (His wife doesn’t care, she wants the best education that they can afford. BTW, she’s a very nice person, above the politics that makes her husband $$$)

Spike has Jews working for him on his productions. But I did see him on Charlie Rose stating that he believed that Jewish doctors were spreading AIDS throughout the black community. (Business, not personal. He had an audience to reach, and an image to maintain.)

There is evidence of other prejudices – a producer who worked on his commercials for years wasn’t hired after her baby was born. (Business – he apparently didn’t want to worry about her missing work if the child was sick)

Like everyone else in Hollywood, Spike’s not above telling a “tall tale” if it helps sell his movie. He was all over the press stating that the great African American actors all pitched in to finance Malcom X, when in reality they gave a token few percent, if that much, and the rest came from the Completion Bond Company – you can look it up if you want. (Business – it was a good story that helped with the promotion.)

With regard to “Do the Right Thing” here’s some info that will help those of you revisiting the film, and understand Spike a bit more.

In Brooklyn,(allow me to exaggerate a bit), everybody has a ‘big mouth’ and uses it a lot. A ‘big mouth’ doesn’t mean you have a big fist, a big knife, or a big gun. People in Brooklyn understand this. They react to the stress of the city by talking big.

And maybe Brooklyn has it right – it’s OK to talk big. In Brooklyn, when you don’t agree, you cuss out the other guy, and then you both move on. In Do the Right Thing, you can see an example of this when the “Yuppie” ran his bicycle tires over one character’s expensive new sneakers. No physical blows – all verbal.

With regard to Clint Eastwood, there WERE about 1000 African American soldiers there, who were targets as they unloaded supplies. From the interviews I’ve read, plenty of them would have rather been fighting on the mountain, but were kept from doing that by institutionalized racism of the times. Clint could and should have been a big sport, and shown a few second scene of them being fired on. Clint goofed, but now way he’s a racist. That’s Brooklyn talking. (and Business)

Spike’s an actor, too. These comments are part of his act.

You know, if even a number as small as 10,000 people change channels whenever his name is mentioned, it’s noticed, and does make a difference to Business.
