Report: Iranian minister, previously tortured for performing baptisms, captured again
I’m seeing several sources reporting that 44-year old Mohsen Namvar has been picked up by Iran’s state police. They rousted about a dozen Christians in Tehran, but Rev. Namvar is still being held. His previous detention with the Iranian authorities was not a pleasant one, according to Amnesty International:
Mohsen Namvar had been arrested in 2007 for baptising Muslim converting to Christianity. He was tortured with electric shocks to his back which left him unable to walk. After his release, he had surgery to his back. Although he is now able to walk, prolonged sitting or standing causes him pain.
Here’s more from the Mission News Network, including some speculation on why such a crackdown occurred:
Why the focus on believers? Nettleton says, “The church is growing at an absolutely phenomenal rate in Iran. Muslims are coming to know Christ; they’re getting involved with these house church groups. That is what has caused the concern of the government. That’s why these arrests are happening.”
I honestly had no idea there was a clandestine house-church network operating in Iran. Though I can’t say I’m surprised.
Your prayers for Mohsen Namvar (and his fellow prisoners of conscience) are requested and if you wish to do more, there is contact information for the Iranian government at the Amnesty link above, with a recommendation for the content of a letter.
Let me remind you that despite the strong temptation to…extemporize when addressing the government of Iran, this is not a good occasion to give the Mullahs a piece of your mind and that doing so will not help Mr. Namvar win his freedom nor save his life.

Gosh.
Do ya think the heroic Boumediene Five are up burning the midnight oil at SCOTUS tonight working up a way to extend Constitutional rights to Christian detainees in Iran? How ’bout if we tell them it’ll make Bush look bad if they do?
Oh well, I guess we’ll just have to wait ’til BHO takes over. He’ll fix EVERYthing. {Sigh }
And they say AMERICA is EVIL! If we are so EVIL why arent we rounding up RADICAL MUSLAMS and give them the much needed RE-EDUCATION and RETURNING THEM TO WHERE EVER THEY CAME FROM? Maybe we should start! I have come to belive that the one thing “THEY” understand one thing; A BOOT on the back of the NECK with the BARREL of a GUN to the BACK of their HEADS! This they UNDERSTAND! This is the way we can control them but, their is no WILL within the US HOUSE OF REPS IN DC!
Reading things like this, makes one appreciate U.S., and the freedoms we have today. Having traveled overseas and living there, it was always good to get back. Eventually, at the rate this country is going, we will lose a lot of them in the not-so-distant future. As long as we grant the national government all the power it wants and allow groups to “PC” our rights by “feel good” politics, and being “sensitive” to others, they will be gone, especially Christianity. “Re-education” is already underway here.
This minister and all like him are creating apostates. It’s surprising he’s still alive in any Islamic state, much less one of the most repressive. Prayers and letters aren’t likely to do him much good, in fact given the people who control Iran, they could get him beheaded that much sooner. I’m glad he’s bringing people out of the bondage of Islam, but I’m afraid he’s going to end up another in a long line of Christian martyrs. One thing, don’t expect any help from anybody in our government - especially our wear-it-on-the-sleeve, born again President.
It makes one wonder Gray, if we will fight so hard to regain our freedoms once they have been lost. This incremental infringements on our rights has no foreseeable end in sight.
Men like this however, do give us hope that there is still good left in mankind. While all I have to offer are my prayers, they will certainly be there for him and others like him.
For what it is worth.
One thing to keep in mind is this is only going to happen in a radical state such as Iran or even those “nice” guys in Saudi Arabia…and this is exactly why the radicals want the Iraqi experiment to fail. I had the privilege to witness first hand that the majority of Iraqis are tolerant of religious freedom and it does work in a Muslim country.
shocker! direct contradiction to ahmanutjobs speech at Columbia.
This is good news - right lgm? After all, we are talking about Christians and their freedoms.
AJ, I disagree. ahmanutjob and Columbia go together. He said what CU and the liberals wanted to hear. Then he did what liberals do so well, the opposite of what they say.
I’ve long argued one of the major reasons liberals give such a pass to Islam is because Islam is exceedingly oppressive and violent toward Christianity (as well as Judaism).
Some liberals hate Christianity so much they’ve adopted a “the enemy of my enemy is my friend” mentality, no doubt hoping Islam will rid the world of us pesky Christians and all will be well.
Unfortunately, I’ve got a newsflash for them: it is only Christians who will get their feet out of the fire in the event Islam takes over. I guarantee it.
# 2 A&A… I agree!
That’s the thing with these Christians. You’d think that they were bonkers or something, how they go on and on about this dude called Jesus and how they risk their lives just to tell others about their friend. They’re either clinically insane, or they know something so awesome and amazing that it is worth dying for in order that others may know it too!
On the contrary, I believe that it is only prayers and the Holy Spirit at work in Iran that has kept him alive thus far. Sorta like how the Apostle Paul came so close to death on numerous occasions only to be saved and then continue with his good work.
In my mind, there are two kinds of heroes in this world. There are the men of the sword, who through their courageous acts safeguard our earthly lives and freedoms. Then there are the men of the cloth, who willingly sacrifice their lives to bring the only Truth that liberates to people living in bondage.
Both sets of heroes deserve our thanks.
Matthew 5:10 (New International Version)
10Blessed are those who are persecuted because of righteousness,
for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.
Let’s all pray for our Christian brothers and sisters.
And also remember, this is what the Religion of Violent Death does to those who disagree with it.
While i’m no friend to religion, this still makes me sick.
I’m with you on this one, but lgm and his friends can already smell the (christian) blood. No need to chum the waters, too.
God is with Namvar… Godspeed.
The Iranians clearly have no idea what they are doing! The Romans tried for hundreds of years to root out and kill every last Christian they could find and look what it got them? They tried burning them out, hanging, feeding them to lions, murdering and killing them by the thousands. They just could not get rid of those pests. I think the Iranians need to go back and look at history again. Even that Mohammad guy’s plans for killing them has simply not worked.
I did only because my church supports a couple that has a radio program in Spain that transmits to Morocco, They also go into Morocco to hand out Bibles to these home church groups, It’s a dangerous job if your caught with a Bible in Morocco it’s a death sentence.
He said that this is going on all over the muslim world, this just confirms that he is right.
I’m having a daily struggle with Freedom of Religion in America. On one hand it is what I have believed in and helped fight for all of my life. On the other hand, I can’t stomach a “religion” that wants me dead BECAUSE of MY beliefs.
I am a Child of the King, Jesus Christ, and will continue to ask Him to help me sort out the path Christians need to take in this time of terrible uncertainty. I don’t think we can any longer sit back and wait for the leaders in this country to figure it out.
Freedom to murder Christians is NOT part of the Freedom of Religion.
sweet! The Holy Spirit is much more powerful than any human invention such as government. The Truth is powerful. Good News INDEED. All you have to do is tell people who Christ is and what Christ did and they’ll love Him just like He loves them.
Muslims want to know Christ and love God too. They want to worship God. That is something that should be nurtured. They just need more Truth and less hatred taught in Islam.
My grandson came to know Christ this week-end and I want to leave a Godly America to him as my legacy. The Holy Spirit is truly alive and well and begging for others to know Him.
Great news swmbo!
Yes, those oh so tolerant and peace loving Moslems! And they are protesting this prosecution of other religions where?
Call Isreal and tell them we are sending in a seal team to remove Mohsen Namvar (and his fellow prisoners of conscience) and once they are clear they are free to begin the construction of the parking lot.
Oh sorry i was dreaming….:)
Ain’t this exactly how Christianity got started in Rome? “Yes, Centurion! Of course we are celebrating the birth of the ‘Sun’, just look at our wonderful pagan celebratory ornamentation! Happy birth of the ‘Sun’ to you! And here, I forgot to pay my sacrifice tax - can I just pay it to you?”
Any person who feels that their faith is somehow threatened by someone else’s faith - never actually had any faith to begin with.
I just hope when the hate speech secular humanists come for me, I will be strong enough to not reach for the 12 guage Mossberg shotgun.
G-d’s speed to all Christians being harmed, and murdered for their faith.
The religion of peace rules Iran.
This helps to explain why many world religions use violence and hatred toward those who disagree with them. In addition, Christianity is not a religion; it is a personal relationship with Jesus Christ, available to “whosoever will” partake.
America is not perfect, no country is, but being born here is ostensibly one of the greatest blessings I’ve received. As I’ve gotten older, not a day goes by where I don’t look around and take inventory of all of the wonderful things I have to be happy for. The worst day I’ve had pales in comparison to things so many in this world have to deal with every day.
While I spent a good bit of my life as a leftist (when I left college, I was convinced America was truly evil and that Ronald Reagan was the embodiment of evil), I couldn’t reconcile my philosophy with life as I experienced it. The one thing I learned though as a leftist is to look at what I didn’t have, or look at what was wrong with my life, instead of looking at what all I did have and what was right with it. I used to think I didn’t have money b/c of an unfair system, not b/c I didn’t work hard enough or make good decisions about how to spend my money. Little by little I realized that the decisions I make have infinitely more impact on my life than anything that goes on in Washington. As a leftist though - you become incapable of being grateful for much of anything. Anything you have, well, it’s not enough, it’s not good enough, or you are enjoying it unfairly. Think about what it takes to sit around in America circa 2008, with ‘big’ problems being the internet being down or not driving a car that only takes premium gasoline - while people elsewhere are going through stuff like this, or a man has his wife dismembered and burned b/c he dares to oppose a tyrant - and think you’ve got it bad. Think about what it takes to claim we are living in a fascist country where political speech is being squelched when people are being tortured and killed for opposition. Think about , for a second, an Iranian or Zimbabwean version of Michael Moore - it’ll cause immediate cognitive dissonance b/c it’s impossible to even imagine such a thing. yet as a leftist, or should I say Progressive, you can live with all this greatness, and convince yourself life is terrible.
It’s shrill to say “liberalism is a mental disorder” , but honestly, it is fair to say that Progressives are all too often little more than spoiled ingrates in adult bodies. They get all worked up over Gitmo all the while giving the true torturers in Cuba a free pass (in many cases lauding him). they get all worked up about how we’ve lost our rights, and how terrible it is here in the states, ignoring the fact that people are truly suffering elsewhere. They obsess over Bush as though he’s the be all and end all of evil and political oppressions, as though the truly oppressed don’t exist. They call a cop killer, who, assuming he isn’t guilty, has a very compelling case against him - a political prisoner - and yet can ignore real political prisoners.
There are many things that I agree with the left on, at least as far as their rhetoric, but sadly there are so few leftist and progressives that truly practice what they preach - I could give away a dime for every non-hypocrite progressive in the US and it’d still be less than the taxes I pay every month ;-(.
Reading this just drives home the point of how wonderful our country is and how lucky we are to live here. There’s a lot more deserving people than me out in the world going through pure misery - it’s just too bad the left will never stand up for them, or if they do, do little more than a few obligatory words of mild condemnation.
