Leaders of the Black Cultural Council say volunteers and the black community felt “humiliated” after two health department food inspectors threatened to put a stop to a Juneteenth celebration over questions about food preparation for 600 free barbecue sandwiches.
Council President Jo Ann Davenport-Littleton said health inspectors told them it was illegal for the group to serve the sandwiches because they were not prepared at the site where they were served.
Gino Solla, the county’s top health official, said state law prohibits any food service operation from having food prepared in a private home for public consumption.
“I hate that it happened,” Davenport-Littleton said in a story for today’s edition of the Odessa American. “I wanted people to go away talking about how great the celebration was this year. All you heard was ‘They were going to deny us barbecue. Here we are in modern-day slavery again.’ “

So, following laws as set by those elected officials equates to modern day slavery? Um? So then on my way home this evening I can speed and if I get caught and have to pay a fine, then I can claim I’m a slave… Someone get my lawyer on the phone… I’m gonna fight my recent ticket for speeding…
Of course, if someone had come down with some form of food poisoning, then the conspiracy theorists would have been out in droves, accusing “The Man” of deliberately poisoning their barbecue.

I’m a bit conflicted on this one. It’s hyperbolic to refer to this as “slavery” and is actually insulting to those affected by actual modern day slavery. But why is the government involved at all in limiting the distribution of free food.
Reminds me of the local health department shutting down kids selling hot dogs during garage sales in my neighborhood. A government out of control.

And…little known historical fact: The judges at the Nuremberg Trials heard three days of testamony on how the Germans had denied BBQ sandwiches in the concentration camps. The testamony got so graphic a couple of justices had to leave the courtroom.
Of course (as I’m sure everyone here already knows but it bears repeating) Sitting Bull celebrated his defeat of Col. Custer at Little Bighorn by prying Custers BBQ sandwich from his cold, dead hand.
Slavery included many races; however, to listen to black people who often use race as a get-out-of-jail free card -only black people were slaves. Hence, the racism that they believe is inherent in slavery.

I recall a similar story about a woman who fed homeless people out of her home and was told that if she wanted to continue to feed the homeless she had to bring her kitchen up to their standards. Nevermind that she was doing this service out of the kindness of her heart, thereby meeting an unmet need. That didn’t matter. Bureaucracy is a biotch. Look out when it heads your way.

Juneteenth celebrations ( or perhaps, I should say discussions in the aftermath of them ) are notoriously cited as racist….
Just google ‘Juneteenth violence’ to expose your mind to undisciplined, violent occurrences that happen at these shindigs -
But as soon as anyone decries the festival as a harbinger of violence, the black community calls them a racist - even though the facts speak for themselves.

Fortunatly, we were able to send them back. Oklahoma has too many dems (dims?) as it is.
You might be interested to know that a few years ago when I was Commander of my VFW post, we had a cookout on grills outside as a fund raiser for helping to pay for some medical bills for an individual…. we were told to shut down because…. you guessed it….. the health issue…… not one word of racism was uttered …. Gee, I wonder why? My serious point is this….. get over it …… my Irish ancestors have.

Up until a few years ago, Texas was run by a Democrat legislature even though most of the voters were Republican, thanks to gerrymandering. This nanny-statism is just a holdover. Racism may not be inherent in the concept of slavery, but I don’t think anybody can deny that as it pertains to the enslavement of Africans in America, racism played a significant role.

When you vote for people who believe in expansive government powers and regulations, don’t be surprised when a bureaucrat someday declares “no, you can’t have that sandwich”.
This matter leaves me conflicted as well. Part of me thinks it is great that people will be cooking in their own kitchens, with love, to pass our to fellow celebration goers and the government should stay out of it. The other part of me says if someone gets sick, there will be heck to pay.
This has ZERO to do with racism of slavery. This has do with what should the state should regulate. In Chicago, their are two Sports radio personalities that speak of people looking for the “Invisible Klansman” under the bed. How are we to get beyond race when it is brought up in totally irrelevant ways?

But it did get me to thinking about the church bake sales, school bake sales, etc. They should have just let them have their bbq and be done with it. I recall that growing up in the 60s, my elementary school used to have big field-day fundraisers where parents brought in not only baked goods but sandwiches (I recall having a baloney sandwich with butter for the first time - echh). Nobody died. Of course, that was a time when you received a good public education and if you were a troublemaker, the school kicked your ass out.
Here in our city, the Health Dept. is trying to keep people who feed the homeless from doing so for the same reason. Bottom line is that the homeless won’t eat….good move, Health Department.
Crying “racism” and “slavery” only make the grievance-mongers look stupid, which takes away from the real enemy here….idiot bureaucrats.

Well I think there is a more fundamental question of whether the Texas constitution provides for an individual right to homemade barbecue or whether such homemade barbecue belongs only in the hands of a well regulated militia.
It’s the victim mentality that holds so many people back in this country. You sit back and play the victim, wait for the government to take care of you and you end up with New Orleans after Katrina. But if you dig down and stand up and say “this thing isn’t going to beat me” you get what we are seeing out of Iowa after the floods. No victims there, they understand that sometimes bad things happen to good people and you just deal with it. Another moment in time that I can be proud of my country, wish everyone would see the good that’s visible every day in this greatest country on the planet.
I’ll bet there’s a bunch of Texans standing around with their jaws on the floor. And, remember, they’ve seen everything.

That is a no-no, unless the home has a state licensed kitchen in their home. Last year I worked in just such a kitchen but of course zoning laws & covenants may block even that.
Of course, on-site preparation can be a pain too because of all the health codes involved.
It’s idiotic of her to equate this with slavery. To her, I would recommend she actually study some history and maybe learn something.

DiamondMair, actually this happened in Odessa, not Houston. For those who fail to grasp the enormity that is Texas, that would be about 538 miles from here.
That said, yes we have a real problem with taco trucks here in Houston. there have been some real knock-down drag-outs in city hall over taco truck regulation for a number of reasons and yes, racism is always claimed to be the underlying reason by the taco truck drivers. Thing is, they want to use the “mobile food service” classification which means that they don’t have to provide bathrooms with hot running water. but they don’t actually move. many are up on blocks and haven’t moved an inch. They do not take their sewage waste to a sanitary sewer dump facility with grease traps, they just either dump it on the ground for it to run into the storm sewer, or they have an illegal sewage tap that has no grease trap. They compete with real restaurants that DO have to comply with fixed food service permits and they don’t pay rent.
Come on, people down there. We have a lot of people in this country who want a “nanny state” with a government that takes care of them. Now what did you expect??? People keep electing more of the nanny state politicians to rule over us. We have 1 obvious and 1 probable candidate running for President. More liberty gone and more rights “abridged” for the “good” of the people. Like Earl Pitts (if anyone here has ever listened to him) says at the end of his daily update, “Wake up America!”. Be happy you can have any sort of outdoor BBQ. Soon, we won’t be able to BBQ at all…fire, health, food, and smoke hazard.

But due to liberal PC run amuck a show like AITF wouldn’t make it today due to language and the use of even just the parody of sterotypes (e.g. the “rib joint”). Potlucks are typically private affairs. If you have an event open to the public and the event offers food on its own then you are subject to health department regulation.
I am not certain as to where the line is exactly, though once we put in too late to get a permit the HD guy told us to call it a “pot-luck” just that a couple of us were bringing big pots of food.

Most likely the event had applied for and held a health permit the inspectors showed up to inspect the event and were asking questions and some low level flunky who did not the regulations blurted out the truth.

Purplepeep, no, they aren’t. no bathroom, no seating area, (unless you count some plastic tables and lawn chairs sitting out on the ground next to the truck which itself is sitting up on cinderblocks.) No way to wash your hands before handling your food. great big puddles of nasty smelling water from the valve on the sewage dump tank being left open to run out on the ground, flies everywhere. yeah, like that.

Records from 1860 show that in Charleston, SC there were 120 free blacks who themselves owned slaves. Revisionist history hides this fact because it doesn’t fit with the stereotypes of only white people owning slaves.
Back to the subject at hand, I’m going to speculate as to what REALLY happened here.
They’ve been using this same “contractor” for 11 years, probably a friend or relative of Ms. Jo Ann Davenport-Littleton if I know how these organizations work. The “bidding process” for the work was probably a foregone conclusion and probably only put on for show, if they even bothered. Anyone want to bet that there was another bidder that actually DID have a health department permit that was underbid by this woman without any permit? Anyone want to bet that was the reason health inspectors showed up to begin with? the losing bidder probably dropped a dime on the little nepotism scam.

If I can not smoke outdoors in some places due to health concerns then you can not have your BBQ made at someones house for the same reason. This is only going to get worse, especially if we get uni health care. It is really silly, but not racism.

Slavery ended in the USA over one hundred years ago. It still occurs in many parts of the world to this day. However, since it does not fit the victim agenda domestically, it is relatively scarce in the news.
They never will cause as soon as you try they scream you are racist. That is their excuse for laziness, failure, drugs, crime, killings, and fatherless childern. BLAME WHITEY… I have served with many fine men and women who where black and you would never hear them use race as a crutch. I will say it again. Entitlements caused all this cause people are told they can not do without entitlements or they will never get ahead and be able to compete. End entitlements and watch how things change. People would learn that they have to do or they starve. Funny how not having food and clothes or money to buy things will make you take jobs and get an education .
