Photo of the Day

By see-dubya  •  June 25, 2008 11:57 PM

It’s from the AP and they’re real boogers about using their photographs* but you can take a look at it here on the Desert Sun site. If you liked the Sisters of Ferris story, you’ll love this photo of a similar pistol-packin’ mama in Karbala.

It’s almost as powerful an image as the purple finger.

I remember a while back there was video of Iranian policewomen practicing with handguns, and of course Qadaffi always travels with his retinue of armed Amazons, so it’s not like women learning to shoot has never happened in Islamic countries before. (Here’s another example: a couple of pictures from 2006 of a female Iraqi soldier on patrol.)

But even knowing all that, the picture still warms my cold, bitter, clingy little conservative heart. However Heller turns out, it’s nice to know that we’re inculcating a self-defense ethic around the world.

(*even though at the link they’ve got options to post the photo to Digg, Reddit, and other social networking sites. How come those sites are invited to use the AP’s photos for free but blogs like Brian Ledbetter’s don’t?)

That’s nothing. I was at the range a few days ago and I looked over and someone was ham-fisting a little automatic such that the back of the slide was pressing against about an inch of their “thumb web.” Fortunately something was wrong with the gun and it didn’t fire. It totally would have made two deep lacerations. When he gave up and put it down, I noticed a telltale laceration on his left thumb from doing what Ms. Iraqi Police Officer is doing in the photo. Noobs. Both thumbs point forward on the left side of the grip (for righties).

Can’t wait until 10am. With any luck I’ll be in line for a full-auto M4 by noon (hey, a boy can dream).

Interesting photo. She appears to have a solid right handed grip but her left index finger is on or near the trigger.

There is a very simple answer to that question and I am certain you already know and the question is actually rhetorical in nature. However, for those little (envy) green “men” on this site who may not understand it:

It is because the social bookmarking sites do not question their highly biased (op-ed disguised as) news articles where you and other bloggers proudly point to the truth and facts and prove that their editorial manure is just that … nothing more than manure.

The lady’s left hand grip is too high.
The shooting hand (right) holds the gun, and the non-shooting hand supports the shooting hand by clenching the shooting hand where possible with a tight grip around and below the shooting hand.

But oh hell what’s important is that she is learning to protect herself.

If she’s smart, she’ll only do that once.
On another note - this has to be Muslim men’s worst nightmare - women who can defend themselves. NOW will be applauding this in three, two,……..

It’s amazing how many of us cringed at the sight of her improper grip.

As a LEO, the gun is simply a tool - yet an important one - that should come with proper training.

Even here in the states I’ve recently seen trained LEOs (usually who have been on the job 20+ years) using some strange-ass grips…

Just like the purple finger photos meant nothing more than the democratic ushering in of Sharia, the completion of the Shi’ite crescent, and the Shi’ite superstate alliance with Iran, this photo is nothing to celebrate. It might be worth celebrating when she can do that in public minus that god-awful black potato sack niqab that she’s wearing.

One other thing about this photo. As the LA Times and USA Today both reported, even though these female Iraqi police officers are trained in using guns, because of Islamic law they’re sentenced to desk duty. Hardly anything to celebrate.

On-my-soap-box, the pic does not say or imply “baby steps.” It’s just fraud. They don’t and aren’t allowed to use the guns. Also, the prob with your “baby steps” claim is that Iraq has regressed over those few years, embracing Sharia more and more and killing and expelling more and more Christians. That won’t change, only get worse. We must be realistic about what we have now allowed to happen in Iraq. It went from being a secular state to a Shi’ite one.

I disgaree with most of your post Debbie. I have been claiming for sometime that a HUGE shift will occur in Iraq when women rise up and demand change. I don’t believe for one minute that they would be putting the resources forward to train these women (there is also a Kurdish female force) just to make it look good. The times over there are changing….slowly, but changing. I have first hand knowlege of what these women are allowed to do that they could not do before. Also, most of this is to help in searches of females. Yet, these women do not go into that unprotected. Many many many penguins have been blowing themselves up lately. These armed women are a very important strategy.
