Caution: Clown congress at work

By Michelle Malkin  •  June 27, 2008 01:01 PM

While I was stuck in traffic on the way to UStream’s Mountain View offices for the From the Frontlines web-a-thon yesterday, I tuned into the Gitmo interrogation hearing by the House Judiciary Subcommittee on the Constitution, Civil Rights, and Civil Liberties. Serving as human voo-doo dolls: Berkeley law professor John Yoo, who served in the Office of Legal Counsel and authored the so-called “torture memos,” and the Vice President’s chief of staff, David Addington. (Hearing info here.)

Far left radio station Pacifica carried the proceedings live–with unhinged commentators and callers griping afterwards that Chairman Jerrold Nadler (D-NY) and his fellow witch-hunters didn’t stab their pins in far enough.

The two-hour hearing was an absolute travesty. Nadler and the Dems shamelessly badgered and harangued the witnesses; Yoo, polite to a fault, repeatedly attempted to answer questions, only to be cut off by foaming jerks who twisted his words or indignantly claimed he was “conceding” some point that he had just established himself.

One of the most hostile and ignorant questioners was Rep. William Delahunt (D-MA)–who is not even a member of the subcommittee. When subcommittee member Steve King (R-Iowa) politely objected that Nadler had not followed the rules in obtaining unanimous consent for Delahunt’s questioning (King did not object to his presence, just the failure to follow House rules), Nadler obnoxiously acknowledged the point of order, regretting that he had been called out. Later, after King had left the hearing room, Nadler personally attacked King and snarked that he must not have cared about the rules enough to stay. (At the end of the hearing, Nadler withdrew those remarks with all the sincerity of a, well, Democrat politician.)

I almost drove off the road when Delahunt sarcastically told Addington that he was “glad” al Qaeda finally got the chance to watch him on TV. He can spin it all he wants, but the gloat in his voice is unmistakable.

Rep. King rightly called Delahunt on the carpet: “Congressman Delahunt’s live, televised statement to Vice President Cheney’s Chief of Staff was an invitation to Al-Qaeda to target him. I wonder if Bill Delahunt is ready to guard Mr. Addington’s home and family.”

Delahunt went on to grill Yoo about the torture memos. When Yoo referred to an appendix in the 2003 memo, Delahunt interrupted that he had not read the memo and barreled ahead with his kabuki interrogation.

What else do you need to know about the utter lack of seriousness, character, and good faith of your clown Congress at work?

When we call them 9/10 Democrats, 9/10 is not just a date. It’s the estimate of their mental and emotional ages.

Jonah Goldberg weighs in on why the Congress has reached the position it is at.

Out of 16 major American institutions, Congress ranks dead last in the eyes of the American people according to Gallup. Even HMOs are more revered. If Carrot Top and Joey Buttafuoco were elected to Congress, it would improve the legislative branch’s reputation.

The reasons for Congress’s craptacular standing are too long to list here. But some culprits never get blamed, even though they are hiding in plain sight. Chief among them: the U.S. Supreme Court.

Have you ever had a boss who treated you like a child, second-guessed you, reworked whatever you did so that you felt no ownership of the final product? As a result, did you take your job less and less seriously precisely because you knew that whatever you produced wouldn’t really be yours anyway?

Well, the Supreme Court is the boss, and Congress is the Dilbert. There was a time when the U.S. Congress took the Constitution very seriously. Even after Marbury v. Madison, the 1803 case that established the Supreme Court’s power of judicial review, Congress and the president were still the chief guardians of the Constitution. Indeed, before the Civil War, only two acts of Congress were found unconstitutional by the Supreme Court.

These days, the Court seems to find duly enacted laws unconstitutional six days a week and twice on Sunday.

Read it all, for it is good…

“That’s absurd. That was not my intent,” he told FOX News. “And I’m sure Mr. Addington knows that was not my intent.”
Delahunt said he was just trying to express that he was glad to see Addington. Delahunt said he recalls saying “I,” not “they,” during the testimony – though the video, broadcast on C-SPAN, shows he was talking about Al Qaeda.
“I’m sure that he understood,” Delahunt said. “I would be surprised if he had any other interpretation other than the one that I suggested I intended. And if he believes in any way I wish him ill, I assure him that’s not the case and I’d be happy to have another conversation with him.”

    Uh-huh.

So is that what our friends, the Dems think, that Al Qaeda will be their paid assassins? Of course, they do. They seem to think they can control everything.

Forgive them Father for they know not what they do.

Mark Levin asked his audience last night to be polite yet call Delahunt’s office. So, I did:

I know this will shock many here but I wish to thank Congressman William Delahunt for painting the bull’s-eye brighter on that guy [Addington]; he made me safer by doing so. How? Obviously, if al Qaeda’s killers go after that guy, the alligators will eat me later.

What’s that you say, because of Delahunt, I could up end up collateral damage like my wife’s brother did in the World Trade Center and like my old Army buddy did in the Pentagon on 9/11? True, but it is more likely the guy’s family, friends, and neighbors will be hurt instead of mine so it is his problem, not mine. Well, maybe it is my problem, only later.

Congressman Delahunt must be for the death penalty and that is appropriate. After all, Addington committed the high crime of working for the United States as a staffer. Sure, he had nothing to do with actually making uncomfortable those who plotted to murder my brother-in-law, my friend, eight children 11-years-old and younger, and 2,963 more on 9/11. What Addington did and what those who actually made KSM (and company) uncomfortable did aren’t crimes I know but hey, Congressman Delahunt, you did a wonderful job, you made me safer, for now.

You snuck into a committee meeting just so you could smile, giggle like an idiot, and endangered a fellow American, his family, friends, and neighbors, making me safer for now; al Qaeda will kill me later. Thank you so much. Great job! Bravo!

Note to all: The above is exactly what I did say — in a mocking voice and with genuine anger in my heart — when I called Delahunt’s office. I needed to write it down first. That is wise sometimes, when I need to get something off my chest, to write it down, to say only that and no more… [Message left at Congressman Delahunt's Quincy, MA, office at 6:52 a.m., June 27, 2008, (617)-770-3700]

A sincere thank you to all those who serve our country in harm’s way, in staff jobs, and in ways no one knows, for doing what you do to keep us all safer and free. May God bless you and protect you and yours.

WASHINGTON – Three Massachusetts congressmen called for a United Nations security force to replace American troops in Iraq as part of a phased plan for withdrawing US soldiers after a new president takes office in January.

Yesterday’s proposal, sponsored by Representatives James P. McGovern, John F. Tierney, and William D. Delahunt, calls for an end to ongoing talks between the United States and Iraq on a long-term security agreement. Instead, according to the proposal, US authorities should immediately start negotiations with the UN on a mandate to govern the “internationalization of responsibility for aid and support to Iraq.”

Every time we try to bring up the issue of withdrawal, the [Bush] administration shouts ‘bloodbath.’ They make it seem as if there is no choice but to stay. The fact is there are alternatives.”

Those alternatives include normalizing relations with neighboring Syria and seeking a rapprochement with Iran, two nations that have been blamed for fomenting some of the civil strife within Iraq, according to the 30-page report. The plan also calls for “vigorous diplomatic steps” to stop the flow of arms into the country.

I think Congress is jealous. They know, deep down, that they truly are insignificant. They know the American people can create new inventions and services for society. Congress knows they cannot. The President can liberate countries and defend our own through his policies. Congress cannot. The Courts have the authority to reject any law passed by Congress, with exception to Constitutional Amendments, which must really humble Congressmen. So really, what does Congress have to offer? They can tax and regulate. Both thankless, yet needed jobs. If only they would stay in their lanes. If only they would use common sense, stop thinking like typical power-hungry bureaucrats, and use the lens of “what’s best for the people, the American people.”

At that point you need to decide who you are trying to persuade with your arguments.

Yourself? – Forget it, you probably won’t learn anything relevant becuase facts will not be presented in context.

The unhinged lib? – It’s not worth raising your blood pressure as they tend to argue from emotion, not logic. All you can do is stay calm, present the facts and hope something sinks in. It’s not that they can’t think logically, they just choose not to.

The spectators? – Ah, now here’s where you can really make a difference. If you remain calm, continue to support your arguments, and when possible expose the logical fallacies of your opponent, then the open-minded and undecided portion of the audience will give your words more credence.

Besides, noting further unhinges the unhinged than their opponent not losing control as well, especially if they feel they are losing the debate.

I love Michelle but also agree with Michael’s admonition that we , as Americans, cannot condone torture. It corrupts our honor and destroys our maoral advantage. As he said, torture actually works, but tactical advantages often result in long-term strategic failures. More importantly he urges us to listen and avoid group-think. Check it out, you will appreciate it.

The bitter pill to deal with here is how to punish real wrong-doers while denying a theatrical stage to those looking for nothing more than political gain and not justice. Maybe it’s not possible. If not, you still do the honorable thing.

While the barbarians batter at the borders of Rome and good men die defending it, they name call and bicker, steal from their own people, attempt to destroy the careers of those very same officials who are defending the border, and nod to themselves that it’s all ok, because they are Patrician and know what’s best for the plebians.

I couldn’t agree with you more about the US vs. Rome comparison. If Americans think that Obummer will bring any levity or reason to Washington then they really live in la la land.

The ills that face the US are what confronted Rome those many years ago. I will disagree with you on one thing though, Roman society wasn’t exactly democratic. It was a caste system, much like India once was (and still is in some quarters). The difference between then and now is that Americans have access to improving their status in life if only they stop looking for handouts, work hard, and make good choices.

You can do (and be)anything you want in America. That’s something that many poor Romans could never have. Yes, there were exceptions such as those outside of Rome’s boundaries becoming Caesar, and barbarians having some influence within Roman society.

I think the true tragedy in all this is that many Americans have turned away from their civic responsibility. Many are politically apathetic, and Obummer won’t change that with one election. People tune into elections that involve people like Obummer because they don’t actually have to think for themselves when given the “access” to “free choices.” That’s the seduction going on right now between Obummer and America.

The only problem is… no one has done the proper research to find out how Obummer is going to pay down the national debt yet “responsibly” remove American troops from Iraq. No one is asking the hard questions, or invested in their own lives anymore. Everything is a “birthright” like education, health care, etc. which is a total lie.

If Americans would just open their eyes and stop ignoring what’s going on in front of them, perhaps they could actually process what’s going on in Washington. Yes, Americans are disatisfied with the performance of Washington but do they really feel that the country should be ruled by one party?

The very thought is disturbing. One party rule= intrasigent hierarchy. Do Americans want change at a snail’s pace or sea change? When I see more of a popular demand for term limits so that Americans have more of a say in their government, then I will stop believing we’re headed in the same direction as Rome did and as Europe has with its failed socialist policies.

I’m Oback Arama and it’s time for a new day in American energy policy. I have hope that the changes I will institute will bring down the price of gas at the pump, bring down the level of the oceans and protect our homeland from hurricanes and tornados.

First, I‘m going to shut down market speculation by closing the Enron loophole. Then I am going to institute a windfall profits tax on the insane profits of Exxon Mobile and other American oil companies. By increasing their taxes they will be forced to lower the price of gasoline. Their average of 10% return on investment is obscene. Next I will tax any other evil corporation with unreasonable profits. I will be appointing Ralph Nader as my new Secretary of the Department of Reasonable Profits. My long term plan for lower prices is the nationalization of US oil companies. I know all about oil wells because we have some in Illinois. The US government will bring the efficiencies of central government and planning to our energy problems. I will be appointing Maxine Waters as my new Secretary of the Department of Oil due to her intimate knowledge of the oil industry and socili… oops, I mean, aaaah, taking over things.

My face to face talks with President Ahmadinejad will insure the free flow of oil from Iran and our withdrawal from Iraq will bring an increased good will flow of oil from all oil producing nations of the world including that of our comrade, President Chavez. This is change that my extensive experience in foreign affairs and my winsome personality will bring to this nation, I’m pretty sure. I have the audacity of hope to think it will and that should be enough. Together we can do it. Please send all of your change to me, nickels, quarters and even JFK half dollars which are cool cause his picture’s on them. That’s change that I can use and believe in, and change that works. Can you believe that too? Yes you can! I’m Oback Arama and I approved this message.

Obama will be to the USA as Nero was to Rome …

    Perhaps. But Nero comes later.

On the subject of comparisons to ancient Rome, I’d say we’re about at the stage of the late Republic: right before Marius and Sulla demonstrated for all to see just how weak and corrupt its governing institutions (in particular the Senate) had become, and who paved the way for men like Pompey, Caesar, Antony and Augustus to finish off the Republic once and for all.

There is an increasing fecklessness of our elected representatives that is paralleled by the increasing contempt felt toward them by the electorate. The long-term danger in this development is that the disgust with Senators and Congressmen will one day reach the same crisis point as it did in Rome, opening the door for ambitious and unprincipled “men on horseback” to sweep away the Republic in the name of restoring order from chaos.

The one thing we have going for us that the Romans didn’t is that our military still swears its oath to the Constitution and not to Presidents, Senators or Generals. Perish the thought that one day in the future they won’t have to uphold that oath by acting against a collection of fools and tyros in elected office who have screwed things up so badly that the American people not only won’t mind if they intervene, but will actually call for it.
