Are we doing cloak and dagger stuff in Iran?
Well, DUH, I hope so. But it’s not like they tell everybody this stuff, you know. It’s supposed to be a secret.
Seymour Hersh, however, would have us believe a whole bunch of anonymous military, intel, and political people are eager to confirm to him that we’re doing something new and secret over there.
You could read the whole New Yorker article, but why bother? Hersh says a lot of nutty things–usually things that can’t be proven and are never proven. Here’s a Fox News summary instead, and I like this White House response:
The White House did not comment on the article. And one administration official, who asked not to be identified, dismissed the piece: “We’ve declined comment on Hersh’s quarterly articles. You can almost tell time by them.”
The thing about Hersh’s rambling is that if Iran believes it, they could crack down on those minority groups and dissidents that Hersh claims we’re funding. And Iran isn’t exactly bound by Boumediene v. Bush in their interrogations, you know?
For that matter, if there is any truth to what Hersh has written, it may compromise operations enough that we have to go to Plan B.
I hope it was worth it, Sy.
UPDATE: More on “Plan B” at Israel Insider.

Treason!
You ever notice how there is no shortage of “Americans” willing (gleefully) to expose anything that could be construed as a national secret?
They never seem to suffer the consequences of their actions, either.
I guess Hersh is auditioning for a job at the Al Qaeda Times … but he’s just another BDS afflicted USA hating POS liberal loser posing as a journalist …
Would liberals expend as much energy on helping to solve their energy crisis, than trying their hardest to bring about the demise of the United States through a “free press?”
The simple answer is no. It is easier to point fingers and make allegations than it is to actually formulate original thought.
I see the Fox article also included a partial list of leakers:
“Democratic and Republican leaders in the House and the Senate as well as to the ranking members of their respective intelligence committees.”
A professor of mine invited Seymour Hersh to speak with our class last year. He discussed how the evil banana corporations got the US to covertly overthrow the communist government in Guatemala.
Good to know that the evil oil corporations are now working to overthrow the Iranian regime.
Perhaps the various US agencies are duping Hersch into disseminating misinformation that we hope Iran and their proxies digest? That might explain the number of (apparently) undiscovered or unpunished leakers.
“I could tell you, but then I’d have to kill you.”
If only…
What ever happened to “loose lips sink ships”?
Another reason to like McCain. He was channeling on of Reagan’s finest moments.
Liberals are probably upset that President Kennedy was running covert spy missions over Cuba in 1962. They would have preferred that we found out about the missiles when they landed on our country.
Gerraldo ought do something halfway useful and grill these leakers as to what in hell motivates them to undermine national security and throw other lives into jeopardy with such vanity and smugness and glee.

Hersh should be thrown in jail and executed. Blindfold, cigarrette, Booom.
Your comment at #8, Goldwater Knight was right on
the money.
Normally I would be first to scream treason,(in a time of war) but in this case how could Iran NOT know… more likely this leak is Psy-ops, so let em sweat a little.
On the bright side, congress would have had to approve the funding… hmmmm… maybe there is hope.
Oh, but Goldwater Knight, it is still a public service to give Hersh a cigarette & blindfold… but after Bloomberg brought the price of smokes to 8.50 not one of MY cigarettes.
If we are doing “cloak and dagger” work in Iran we’re not doing it very well when it shows up in all the media rags.
Here would be my foreign policy with regards to Iran. Every time an American is killed in Iraq, something mysteriously blows up in Iran. Every time an American is wounded in Iraq, something blows up in Iran. Every time an American is attacked in Iraq, something burns in Iran. Infrastructure, though, not people. We didn’t buy all of these stealth bombers to just not use them, did we?
No cigarette. Bad for his health.
Hey, DesertLover, #3 post, sure glad I know my alphabet and the code or I’d be going HUH? LOLROF!!!
And I agree with every single consonant and vowel you used.
ArmoredCAV, that does have potential, yes I think I like it… maybe not the stealth bomber part… but payback is a bitch.
Not to change the subject, but how come the comments section is closed on the Mexican oil thread, See-Dubya?

??? well let’s do it here…
now if only we could develope a car that runs on drugs.
Is it? Crap. I knew it was kind of a boring post, but I was surprised at zero comments.
I’ll see if I can open it up.
Drat Brooklyn Red, you stole my line. I was going to say
Blindfold him and make him smoke cigarettes till he is addicted. Then … BOOM
PS – I am one of those few folks in America still smoking. Want to talk about oppression, man oh man, am I oppressed.
PPS – Be sure to make him buy his own smokes, then he will understand the high price of LIBERAL SIN TAXES.
Should be working now. Not sure why that happened.
i’m in…
DesertLover, my years as a military spouse still help me out occasionally. Unfortunatly my Barbie thing about math made it impossible for me to ever tell time as anything other than a civilian.
(red face)
swmbo … no problem … won’t hold it against you …
On Drudge:
SOURCES: BUSH ANGER AT COMING NEW YORK TIMES STORY DETAILING HUNT FOR BIN LADEN… The newspaper is planning to expose a ‘highly classified Pentagon order’ authorizing Special Operations forces to hunt al-Qaida leader in mountains of Pakistan… DEVELOPING….
Disgracefull
The hand of the machine touches every country where their interests lay.
Can we PLEASE arrest the SOB on treason charges?
I have it on pretty good authority that the valet who lays out Achmadinejad’s clothes for him every night is a CIA plant. I wouldn’t want to be him after this gets out.
…authorizing Special Operations forces to hunt al-Qaida leader in mountains of Pakistan…
announcing troop movements…
and they are not hung because???
I’ve got news for the libs. We go into the most volatile places in the world covertly all the time, Iran included.
The problem is, it’s supposed to be COVERT. All “reports” like this do is fuel tensions.
Thank you Mr. Hersch, for inciting the Middle East with a non-story.
We have a neighbor who is in the military, and his job is to go places that no one else can or will go. All his wife says is that he goes in, takes care of business and leaves. His job is beyond dangerous. I don’t know how she’s not a mess all the time. I think he tells her very little.
I hate these leaks too, but going after the press is not the way to handle it. Sure the press should have some scrupuls when it comes to deciding whether or not to print the story, but let’s face it to get the best way to get the stories to stop would be to prosecute the leakers up to and including the death sentence. I guarantee you after a few leakers ride the lightning you wont see anymore leaks.
In this case there really is no story at all. Anyone who thinks that we do not have covert ops going on all over the world is naive to begin with and in this case the story points out that Congress (probably one of the biggest source of the leaks) has approved $400 million for the ops so this is a non story all the way around.
These reports will get people killed. If we have people on the ground there, they are now being hunted. If captured, they will be tortured and killed. All thanks to the press.
Actualy stories like this are more likely to START wars than prevent them.
When is the government going to start prosecuting the reporters and news organizations who publish classified information?
US CODE TITLE 18 > PART I > CHAPTER 37 > § 798
Disclosure of classified information
and the penalty:
sounds like we need a better cloak or a bigger dagger, if its being put in the news.
but really….when are we NOT doing cloak and dagger operations?
Personally, i say do more.
my 2 cents.
