Our constitution has only been mangled because of the jerks in this country who give rights to illegals. I am proud of what our country has done in the wake of Sept. 11, except that I don’t think we have gone far enough to rectify the situation. If it takes more waterboarding or torture to protect our troops and our country, then so be it. I for one will celebrate our Independence Day with no regrets.
I’m not only going to do exactly as I please this Independence Day, I will also be wearing my ‘I’d Rather Be Waterboarding’ t-shirt!

Ahem. The various “patriots” you claim would be ashamed of us now would be called “terrorists” in today’s world. They didn’t sit down and try to negotiate with King George III after the terrorists broke into a ship, and then dumped bales and bales of tea into Boston Harbor, creating the greatest environmental disaster of 1773. Countless wildlife were killed as a result of the actions of those terrorists. All they had to do was pay for the damages and no blood would have been spilled. I mean, it took 25000 Americans to die before the war was over, and it all could have been avoided if the terrorists wanted “change they can believe in” and just paid for the damages! But noooooo, they had to be stubborn and dig their heels in over a petty tax when they could have afforded it. After all, the tax was only on the rich, since most people couldn’t afford it because social security and food stamps hadn’t been invented yet.
They even could have stopped it by refusing to fire back on Lexington Green, because it was all just a misunderstanding. Heck, most of the lives lost during the war could have been prevented if the terrorists decided that it wasn’t a war worth fighting after losing so many men on Bunker Hill and came back to the negotiation table so they could establish peace. Since we know that peace is the lack of American troops fighting.
Right now across the pond another revolution is brewing, and it has to do with the most precious right granted to the people in America: the freedom of speech.
I think our founders are spinning in their graves by seeing the overall *inaction* by people against the continued assault on that right.
All those who think their country is perfect, raise your hands!
For the rest of us, did you see that the US government took “interrogation” techniques used at Gitmo from a description of what the Chinese did to US POWs in the Korean war?
The memo from the 50’s describing Communist torture methods said they torture people to get false confessions, not true intelligence.
I want my country back. I want to live in a country that doesn’t imitate the worst of mankind.

There has never been in gitmo, anything like the torture endured by our soldiers during the korean war, or our soldiers during any war since. Prove me wrong. Satullo is an idiot with no clue. He should be remanded to the history department of any of our military academies for some intensive history lessons. Our founding fathers had a distinctively non-progressive vision for the treatment of pirates (the terrorists of their day) and criminals. Just the standard punishments of the late 18th century, not to mention the conditions of the jails, would look like torture to today’s “progressives”.
When I light off my fireworks this weekend, and proudly fly my US flag from the stern of my carbon desequestering boat this Independence Day, I am going to salute the brilliance of our founding fathers. I am going to salute those who have sacrificed to keep us free, and I’m going to tell my kids about those sacrifices, too. Fact … they would have done anything they could to force someone to reveal whatever tactical information they knew … and then hung or shot them …

And yet, they imprisoned British soldiers in the Revolutionary War, as well as the War of 1812, as enemy combatants without charge or hearing. . .until such time as they could be exchanged with the enemy or the war ended. No charge. No hearing. We’ve done the same in every subsequent war in our nation’s history.
True, but the America they founded knew better than to apply the rights of US citizens to foreign enemies.
Rebellion was spawned for the most part by overtaxation without adequate representation, by measures such as forcing the housing of British soldiers in civilian dwellings, and the like. . .not due to torture.

Conversely: I believe Mr. Satullo works for a paper that was mentioned in a NYT article just barely a week ago. The article discussed how falling ad revenues have analysts questions whether Satullo’s paper (along with many others) can even make their debt payments.
The only people who want to read drivel like the Inquirer and NYT are liberals – and there aren’t enough of them to keep the bloated and biased thing afloat.
Satullo is a has-been at an increasingly marginalized “news” outlet. I’ll be here, laughing, when the Inquirer folds and takes him with it.

We live in a flawed country, but all other countries are equally flawed or much worse than ours.
Some on the left say they love America, and since it has come into vogue they even wave the flag. They say they support our troops, but they don’t.
As the editorial and some discussion here and elsewhere illustrate, such people do not love America as they say. They hate what we are.They love the concept America different from what it now is.
