Our constitution has only been mangled because of the jerks in this country who give rights to illegals. I am proud of what our country has done in the wake of Sept. 11, except that I don’t think we have gone far enough to rectify the situation. If it takes more waterboarding or torture to protect our troops and our country, then so be it. I for one will celebrate our Independence Day with no regrets.

    Mr. Satullo:

Ahem. The various “patriots” you claim would be ashamed of us now would be called “terrorists” in today’s world. They didn’t sit down and try to negotiate with King George III after the terrorists broke into a ship, and then dumped bales and bales of tea into Boston Harbor, creating the greatest environmental disaster of 1773. Countless wildlife were killed as a result of the actions of those terrorists. All they had to do was pay for the damages and no blood would have been spilled. I mean, it took 25000 Americans to die before the war was over, and it all could have been avoided if the terrorists wanted “change they can believe in” and just paid for the damages! But noooooo, they had to be stubborn and dig their heels in over a petty tax when they could have afforded it. After all, the tax was only on the rich, since most people couldn’t afford it because social security and food stamps hadn’t been invented yet.

They even could have stopped it by refusing to fire back on Lexington Green, because it was all just a misunderstanding. Heck, most of the lives lost during the war could have been prevented if the terrorists decided that it wasn’t a war worth fighting after losing so many men on Bunker Hill and came back to the negotiation table so they could establish peace. Since we know that peace is the lack of American troops fighting.

Right now across the pond another revolution is brewing, and it has to do with the most precious right granted to the people in America: the freedom of speech.

I think our founders are spinning in their graves by seeing the overall *inaction* by people against the continued assault on that right.

Satullo is an idiot with no clue. He should be remanded to the history department of any of our military academies for some intensive history lessons. Our founding fathers had a distinctively non-progressive vision for the treatment of pirates (the terrorists of their day) and criminals. Just the standard punishments of the late 18th century, not to mention the conditions of the jails, would look like torture to today’s “progressives”.

When I light off my fireworks this weekend, and proudly fly my US flag from the stern of my carbon desequestering boat this Independence Day, I am going to salute the brilliance of our founding fathers. I am going to salute those who have sacrificed to keep us free, and I’m going to tell my kids about those sacrifices, too. I am going to tell my family (even the liberal ones) about the great things we are doing to make people free in the Middle East.

I am also going to say a prayer that those doofus progressives will get a clue. Perhaps my supplications will be answered with a well-aimed lightning bolt to light up Satullo in the midst of his gloomy pessimism.

Fact … he is correct … they would have put them in front of a firing squad as spies and shot them …

    2. Satullo says … they would not have tried any harsh methods to extract information from these captives …

Fact … they would have done anything they could to force someone to reveal whatever tactical information they knew … and then hung or shot them …

Could go on but I think everyone gets the idea here …

You see Chris, back in the beginnings of this country those very men you are holding up as examples of how we should be doing things today wounot agreeing with today’s war time needs would hold you for se

You say that as though the techniques were only used by the Bush administration. But, as you will remember, the policy of Rendition (sending prisioners to countries where torture was acceptable) was born during the Clinton administration.

A Quote from the ACLU website, (so you are bound by liberal law to believe it):

Suspects are detained and interrogated either by U.S. personnel at U.S.-run detention facilities outside U.S. sovereign territory or, alternatively, are handed over to the custody of foreign agents for interrogation. In both instances, interrogation methods are employed that do not comport with federal and internationally recognized standards. This program is commonly known as “extraordinary rendition.”

The current policy traces its roots to the administration of former President Bill Clinton.

So you see the Bush administration is following policy set by good old St. Bill.

Changing the party in control does not neccesarily change the policies of the government. If, God forbid, Obama should find himself elected President, I am sure he will suddenly find things are hunky-dory in Iraq and we should stay there to protect our interests.

He is already flip flopping like mad in his attempt to disassociate himself from the left wing fringe of the Democrat party.

Barry is no longer the arbiter of change for America. He’s just another politician saying anything and everything to get elected.

    What an a$$ Satullo is.

The America those men founded should never torture a prisoner.

Back then, many of the types of things now considered torture wouldn’t have been.

The America they founded should never imprison people for years without charge or hearing.

And yet, they imprisoned British soldiers in the Revolutionary War, as well as the War of 1812, as enemy combatants without charge or hearing. . .until such time as they could be exchanged with the enemy or the war ended. No charge. No hearing. We’ve done the same in every subsequent war in our nation’s history.

The America they founded should never ship prisoners to foreign lands, knowing their new jailers might torture them.

True, but the America they founded knew better than to apply the rights of US citizens to foreign enemies.

Such abuses once were committed by the arrogant crowns of Europe, spawning rebellion.

Rebellion was spawned for the most part by overtaxation without adequate representation, by measures such as forcing the housing of British soldiers in civilian dwellings, and the like. . .not due to torture.

We’ve got too few people who remember (or have been taught) the sacrifices previous generations made for our freedoms. Just like children who take their parents’ money for granted, we’re a nation of children who are spending our inheritance without a thought of what it took to earn it. Hence, it becomes fashionable and even considered patriotic to hate your own country. Bravo mindless, childish, liberal baffoons…bravo.

lgm, what you and people like you suggest would be “getting your country back” doesnt look like anything of a country that has the safety of its inhabitants in mind, that helps to accentuate and perpetuate the growth of our nation, or that gives me any reason to think that this place will be anything other than a socialist paradise. Where did you learn to write? Surely your high school English teacher is rolling over in his or her grave if he or she has indeed passed on. If not, I would expect a phone call. You haven’t even come close to mastering basic grammar and punctuation, and apparently your editors haven’t either. Sentence fragments and misplaced commas are the norm rather than the exception to the rule with your writing. The title of your column isn’t even capitalized properly. What reason have you given anyone to take your opinions seriously if you can’t even deliver them in a proper manner? I have listed some examples here:

    * A not-so-glorious Fourth
    * For we have sinned.
    * We have done such things, on orders from the Oval Office.
    * We have done them, without general outrage or shame.

I’m not even going to address the asinine content of said column. I’m sure there are plenty of other proud Americans out there who are hammering you appropriately about that bologna. Besides, in this free country you are more than entitled to hold asinine opinions, just as I am entitled to hold that your asinine opinions are, in fact, asinine.

I figured that once a columnist got to the point that his “work” is “published” in a paper with the circulation numbers and online presence of The Philadelphia Inquirer, that columnist ought to have at least an idea of how to properly use correct grammar and punctuation. I guess I was wrong.

I will never read your column or The Philadelphia Inquirer again.

    Most Sincerely,

Like the freedom fighters in Vietnam (VC) that the left admired? Who would kill & torture an entire village except for one person so they could tell other villages what happens to those that don’t comply. Saw some of their fine work: raped a 12 year old to death, broke every major bone in her mothers body, impaled her older brother on a sharpened bamboo stick, one end up his backside & the other driven into the ground so it would take a day or so for him to die, drowned a man in a bucket of feces & urine, cut of the genitals of another & stuffed them down his throat.

    Wow, what a vindictive leech.

For the rest of us, did you see that the US government took “interrogation” techniques used at Gitmo from a description of what the Chinese did to US POWs in the Korean war?

Terrorist sympathizers like you should count their blessings. The US could’ve taken the “interrogation” techniques used by our Islamic enemies themselves: decapitation, mutilation, amputations, bullets to the back of the head, leaving body parts in plastic bags on the sides of roads, etc.

The memo from the 50’s describing Communist torture methods said they torture people to get false confessions, not true intelligence.

If you are falsely insinuating that the US is “torturing” terrorists to “get false confessions, not true intelligence” just like the ChiComs of the 1950s, well then isn’t it amazing how all of those “false confessions” have led to zero US Embassies blowing up, zero skyscrapers being dropped in NYC and zero attacks on US soil since Gitmo opened up for business?

I want my country back. I want to live in a country that doesn’t imitate the worst of mankind.

Wow, what a drama queen. Again, if no attacks have occured on US soil since Gitmo opened up, why on earth would you want YOUR country back? So you can see more of your fellow Americans struck down, and more terrorists slip away?
