Happy Independence Day!

By see-dubya  •  July 4, 2008 10:21 AM

My internet connection is spotty this morning for some reason, so let me put up a quick wish for a Happy Independence Day to all of you–and let me thank again all the troops who are fighting to keep us that way.

One note of possible interest, given the theme of this post: when I was six years old, my dad took me and a friend of mine out to a gravel pit north of town to shoot fireworks. When we were done, he set up a beer can and let us take turns plinking at it with a single action .22 Ruger Super Bearcat that had belonged to my grandmother.

It was my first time to shoot and its been my a wonderful hobby and a great skill to attempt to cultivate. It was all the more memorable for the day on which I learned it. I’ll always associate learning to shoot with a celebration of our fundamental rights as Americans.

This year I’m particularly grateful, and proud, that the Supreme Court has finally seen fit to recognize that right as an individual one.

Your story brought memories of my Dad–4 years in the Pacific –who was “very close to the vest” and didn’t talk a lot about his experiences—my memories show me how warm hearted he was..

He- too – took us -daughters and sons- to the gravel pits to teach us to load-aim-and shoot….We – too- were taught on an old .22!!

Thank you -DAD – for your service- to all my family for their service and to our troops – now – being ever watchful while serving this – the greatest country on earth!!!

    Happy Birthday-U.S.A.

Treat every weapon as if it were loaded.

Don’t point the weapon at anything you do not intend to shoot.

Keep the finger straight and off the trigger until you intend to fire.

Keep the weapon on safe until you are ready to fire.

…. And if all else fails get the Ka-bar, and fix bayonets. I don’t need no stinking rifle!!!

God bless America, and God bless Texas!!!

I am glad the SCOTUS didn’t see fit to outlaw THIS. If they had, I would feel bad for the person who would have to remove it from my tight grip!

Think I will run a few dozen rounds through it tonight to celebrate. I hope I do not bust a knuckle! ;)

Great STORY! Plinking on the 4th is about as pure a theme for the 4th as was ever concocted! We must fight for our freedoms! Freedom is anathma to the objective of government which is set on controlling and managing society. Judging from the great (Sarc/On) deals won by native Americans, government housing recipients, and our veterans have received in health care, pay and benefits for their bravery and sacrifice, we gotta a heckuva lot of work to do.

Seeing how easily the SCOTUS could have ruled the other way, we really need to evaluate how much freedom we really do have in this country. While I celebrate the Declaration of Independence, I must ask whether or not we’re as free as the Founding Father’s intended. Are we as free as we should be? We should take inventory today, not just celebrate with “Chinese-made fireworks” and “barbecue burgers.”
We should also celebrate by dedicating ourselves to defending this nation. We’re at war. Fellas, if you are 17-25 yrs old and medically capable, then man up.

    Happy Independence Day Everyone :-)

The Declaration took life 232 years ago. The fight began years before. The fight continues today.

Today we pause to give thanks for the freedoms we have and to celebrate those that made it possible.

Tomorrow we must not forget that freedom is not free. Our freedoms will always be challenged. Therefore, we must continue to honor and celebrate those that sacrifice for our freedom. More importantly we must always be prepared to sacrifice ourselves.

Thought for the day ” An armed American is a citizen. An unarmed American is a subject.”

I wish you and yours a really great Independence Day :-)

BAGHDAD (AFP) – More than 1,200 US troops serving in Iraq signed up for extended service in the military to mark America’s national day on Friday.

At least 1,215 troops re-enlisted for periods ranging from two to six years at the ceremony held at the spacious Al-Faw palace of executed dictator Saddam Hussein near Baghdad airport.

General David Petraeus, the head of US-led coalition forces in Iraq, said he was “proud of their decision to re-enlist and help the people of Iraq win their most important battle … freedom.”

Happy Independence Day! I was really blessed this morning in town. We went to our local parade, and before the parade started there was a precious little girl who was there with her family. She was standing on the side of the road with them. Everyone was chattering, talking, laughing and playing before the parade started. She, however, was standing at attention, her hand was placed resolutely over her heart and she was waiting for that flag to pass by. It brought me to tears to see such a sweet little girl so anxious and excited to salute or beautiful and wonderful Flag. That made my holiday!

Have a great day…we’re off to eat watermelon, banana pudding, hamburgers, hot dogs, etc…as Erma Bombeck once said, “You have to love a nation that celebrates its independence every July 4, not with a parade of guns, tanks, and soldiers who file by the White House in a show of strength and muscle, but with family picnics where kids throw Frisbees, the potato salad gets iffy, and the flies die from happiness. You may think you have overeaten, but it is patriotism.”

I said I’m sure you love your country just as much, he said yeah it’s alright. I found it funny him telling his friend he was going to love America and and saying Russia is just alright.
