Anti-Fox hounds rally ’round Michelle-O
The anti-Fox hounds put together this video montage purporting to show that Fox News is running a coordinated campaign to “attack” poor Michelle Obama. I love how they highlight the comments of pundits and hosts defending her as proof of the unfair Fox attacks.
As for me, I stand by everything I’ve said about Obama’s bitter half.

Gosh, this Alyce woman is one angry lady. But by Alyce’s own argument, Alyce should be mad as heck at Michelle Obama. Michelle Obama chose to go to Princeton and Harvard and Michelle eschewed the many fine Black colleges that she should have attended. And Alyce should be mad as heck that Michelle Obama chose to work for the lilly white blue blood law firm of Sidly & Austin. Sidley & Austin is about the whitest law firm around. Its client rosters are large insurance companies and pharmaceuticals. Most of the lawyers there are in fancy country clubs and enjoy their golf outings at nice private clubs. And the Obamas choose to live in the exclusive Hyde Park neighborhood, which is about as preppy as preppy can be. So why is Alyce picking on our Michelle. Her Michelle is the one she should be upset with.

On the ridiculous letter, I’ll say that I’m not biracial, but my family is historically racially diverse enough that people play the “What are you?” game with me all the time (for the record, if you’re wondering about this with someone, running through a list of possibilities while the person sits there bemusedly is NOT the best way to find out). People often guess I’m Filipino, or part Filipino, and the people who guess that most often are (drum roll…) Filipino! (”You look exactly like my niece” “You could be my cousin’s twin!”)…(Asian people generally often guess I’m half-Asian, with the deciding country being of whatever descent they are.) Maybe this woman has met a lot of African-American women who look like you. I’m guessing (and giving her a BIG benefit of the doubt), because of my own experiences, which immediately came to mind. But I agree – it’s a bit of a stretch. I don’t look at that footage and feel confused at all on the topic.
As for Michelle O, I think she’s taken a lot of flak. I think it must be terribly difficult to have every word you say dissected (Imagine every quote you’ve publicly uttered under the microscope). And yes – I think FOX has been typically FOX-like in its treatment of her. But I don’t know that this film will have much impact. I admire them for trying, though.

John, I don’t think the argument that they’re making is that she isn’t open for criticism. It’s the question of whether or not that criticism plays on certain ideas, biases, prejudices, fears, etc. I agree with you that once you throw yourself into the process (see: Teresa Heinz Kerry), you open yourself up to a lot. But the idea of the film is whether or not there are subtle (and not so subtle) undertones of questionable origin at work.

Pretty tame email from ol’ Alyce Anderson; whenever I read examples of Michelle’s hate mail, I always brace myself for the blatantly misogynistic sexual references, obscenities, and so on.
This one seemed to confuse “our” Michelle with the “other” one — perhaps in Alyce’s mind, “All you Michelles look alike.”
That’d go a long way toward explaining how she can have Ivy League academic credentials and still say the stupid things she does.

Agree the Kennedy clan has done many things they shouldn’t be proud of. But the discussion at hand is of potential First Ladies. If you want to open this up to politicians in general, I’m sure we can all come up with despicable characters and acts on both sides of the aisle.
“A better woman”? As in better character? Better work ethic? Better in terms of worldly success?
By comparing Mrs. McCain to Paris Hilton, are you implying that she’s lacking in character solely because she was born into a family whose breadwinner earned a great deal of money? Are you implying that Mrs. Obama is somehow a good person because she made a lot of money? So, if I understand what you are saying, if a person earns money without family help (without consideration of the means used to make the money), then that automatically makes that person more moral than someone who inherits money from a family member? Is Jenna Jameson, as an example, a better person than Mrs. McCain because she “earned” what she has? Is Mrs. Obama better than any number of people who’ve inherited wealth and used it to help their fellow man?
