Pelosi flails: Drilling is a “hoax”
Pity poor Nancy Pelosi. Pity:
House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.) on Thursday shut the door on expanding oil and gas drilling beyond areas that have already been approved for energy exploration, drawing a clear distinction from her counterparts in charge of the Senate.
“This call for drilling in areas that are protected is a hoax, it’s an absolute hoax on the part of the Republicans and this administration” Pelosi said at her weekly press conference. “It’s a decoy to punt your attention away from the fact that their policies have produced $4-a-gallon gasoline.”
Pelosi’s stand may put her at odds with a growing number of members of the Democratic Caucus who have been moving toward possible compromises with Republicans on ways to expand domestic energy production.
Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid (D-Nev.) on Wednesday told reporters that expanded offshore drilling is not off the table, and that Democrats will take a look at whether states should be able to choose to drill off their coasts. “I’m not knee-jerk-opposed to anything,” Reid said.

Alaska should stop oil production for a day. . . just one day. Then the ‘brilliant leaders’ will see what the impact of drilling and producing our own oil will have on the market.
What I don’t understand is why, oh why, do they want to impose a windfall tax on oil companies, but they don’t want to produce more oil at the current tax rates. If you produce more oil domestically, DC gets more tax dollars and helps to balance the budget. Ask Texas and Oklahoma. Maybe run some figures from California and see if Schwarzie would like to have that extra revenue for his budget there.
If you drill for more oil, tax revenue will increase.

Every dem I hear on Fox, the only news I watch, give the same old spin. It will take ten years to get any gas to us. The oil companies have millions of acres they won’t drill on they don’t need any more. They tell this on and on till people believe it. It is a crock so bad my head hurts. You made a plain, no nonsense comment about having an energy plan for America. So, is this that plan? Drive up energy prices, restrict drilling on paid-for oil leases, pass legislation to protect polar bears and the “environment” (which, in effect, also bans oil drilling,) demonizing Republicans who want to ease the fuel crunch, create platitudes like, “We can’t drill our way out of this problem,” then blame Republicans, past and present, and the Bush Administration for this most current “CRISIS.”
If this is indeed a crisis, then take actions that will benefit the end users, and not simply line the pockets of your friends in the “Green Community.”

Drill now, nuclear power now, fill up my SUV with gas now…and if years down the road there are some practical alternatives that are cost efficient and something I want, I will consider them.
Pelosi is a fine example of why congress no longer represents the American people. They are isolated in their own worlds of politics and self-ego, that they don’t see what is going on in the country. What the Founding Fathers feared, has come to pass: an aristocacy. But, instead of dukes, earls and barons, we have respresentatives, senators and judges. I seem to recall, the democrats control congress. Seems to me the “policies” are from their party. Like a bunch of little children, they all point fingers at each other when caught. So nothing is solved, except more money out of our pockets to satisfy their own interests…not the country. While we rely on 70% of our oil being imported, and possibly, held for ransom, in the future, they quibble and argue over whose fault it is. The day will come, you politicians, that the oil nations will say “no” to us, unless we “dance to their tune”. What then, Pelosi? Blame Bush again?

The democrats and those who believe them are fools. I just got an estimate on how much it would cost to cover half of my $950 electric bill (small motel) with solar. Sitting down?
$180,000 !!!! It cost about $900 for a panel capable of lighting 2- 75 watt lightbulbs, without the other equipmebnt to change the dc to ac. There is no way this technology will have any significant impact in the time it would take to get off-shore on line.
I met Heather Wilson when she was running for Congress & as I shook her hand I quietly asked her to slap Pelosi upside the head when she (Heather) got back to D.C.
She seemed amenable to the idea.
It will really hit the fan when the country, particularly the Northeast, starts paying for heating oil this winter.
With the price currently floating around $4.50, there will be an uproar for sure. Even funnier, it will really be taking hold around election time.

Nobody ever got oil from drilling. Oil flies out of our butts. I thought that was common knowledge.
Domestic drilling: US jobs, US income, US pays itself for our own oil, US controls the oil, US increases the % of oil it gets domesticly so we’re not at the mercy of an oil embargo which will likely happen sometime in the next 10 years. What a hoax! The real answer lies in wind and solar. A LOT of wind and solar. A REAL LOT.

Actually, Pelosi has a point about expanding drilling locales if (and only if) oil producers are not using existing leased oil fields.
Pelosi is wrong, though, about the problem. We need more refineries. We need to be able to refine something other than light sweet crude. We need some place (other than south and east of Houston) for refineries to be constructed. And oil companies need to know that they aren’t at risk of the nationalization of their businesses.
Oh, and she and Hoyer are wrong on speculation. Adding more regulation to the commodities markets will only serve to distort the market even more than OPEC behavior does.

I think it’s ironic that the Doom-o-crats are so absorbed in creating more power for themselves, while they fight so darned hard to keep (energy) power out of the hands of those who vote for them. If the populace is happy (low gas/energy prices), they will not vote for “change.”
Every day I become more convinced the left wants to make America weaker and weaker. How else to explain their policy prescriptions. Every one leads to a weaker America. That must be what they want.

None of the alternative energy sources are worth the trouble. If they are not economically viable enought to work without government support, they are not ready for prime time, and the more government gets involved, the more screwed up the market gets. Ethanol stupidity has messed up the entire food production price chain. Why think they will do better with any other program?

DougT - The oil companies buy the leases not because there IS oil there, but because there MIGHT BE oil there. If there is not enough or it is too expensive or risky to drill, they don’t drill.
Do you believe they have to spend billions drilling dry holes on these leases before they can get productive ones?

3. Focused on irrelevancy: “Why produce more of our own oil, when we haven’t exhausted the alternatives? We haven’t nationalized the oil companies yet, our lawsuit against OPEC is still in the works, and Denny Kucinich is right in the middle trying to get George Bush impeached. Any one of those will solve our problems without requiring one more drop of petroleum.”

Their policies? If I’m not mistaken, it is Pelosi’s own party that has control of both houses of Congress. And the President can do little without Congress putting something in front of him.
Perhaps Nan should have been paying more attention to the energy situation that trying to repeatedly debate and pass the same failed legislation time and time again.
Of course, there’s always the chance that Peolsi knows something the rest of the world does not. Drilling does not provide oil; oil really comes from the Oil Fairy.

Drilling provides oil and according to the Department of Energy there is 40 billion barrels just waiting to be tapped, but the oil companies won’t do it, instead they want access to an additional 18 billion barrels.
It doesn’t matter if there are 100 billion barrels - If it is too spread out or held too tightly in the rock(shale oil), it is no move available then the solar panels for my motel (see #54). The technology doesn’t exist to get it out economically (yet). Since they are corporations, not charities, they are supposed to make money for their shareholders, like me.
Sounds like Rove is telling San Fran Nan what to do and say to undermine the Dems. If only there were a GOP Congressional leadership to take this and run with it, the Dems might be in the minority next year.
But alas, amongst the GOPs left in Congress are a bozo or two looking to 55 MPH as an energy solution. Repealing that was one of the big accomplishments of the GOP Congress when it first took hold back in the 90s.
Pelosi needs to grab her burqua and take another tour of the middle east, only this time she should stay there.

The oil companies CAN NOT LEGALLY explosre or develop in those areas, because past Presidents and/or Congresses have made those areas OFF LIMITS! Are you willing to have them now get permission, or are you just arguing they are greedy and evil?

Alcatraz Island in San Francisco Bay would be a perfect location for about 100 giant wind turbines (nice wind flow through the Golden Gate). Pelosi, Feinstein, Newsome and the other uber-liberal/snobs in San Francisco and Marin would oppose them, no doubt. Renewable energy source, but it’s a NIMBY thing.
