Obama tries to buy the NASCAR vote

By Michelle Malkin  •  July 11, 2008 12:21 PM

I mentioned Barack Obama’s plans to troll for NASCAR votes last week. SI.com has the details of how the campaign will execute the pander. Guess he’ll be leaving the kids home for this one:

SI.com has learned that for the first time in history, a major presidential candidate may sponsor a race car in NASCAR’s premier series. According to sources, Barack Obama’s campaign is in talks to become the primary sponsor of BAM Racing’s No. 49 Sprint Cup car for the Pocono race on August 3. Details of the agreement are expected to be worked out over the coming days.
A BAM spokesperson has revealed the team will hold a press conference July 23 in Miami to reveal the partnership, currently a proposed one-race deal with an option to continue. Obama will be at the briefing, which will be tied to the “Get Out The Vote” campaign message he spread throughout the 2008 primary season…

…While George Bush was prominently featured on Kirk Shelmerdine’s No. 72 car in 2004, this is the first time a national presidential campaign has actually given its own money to make itself a primary sponsor of a race car. The sport has typically shown itself to be a Republican stronghold, and in recent weeks two-time champ Jimmie Johnson is among the growing list of well-known NASCAR stars who have come out in favor of Obama’s opponent, John McCain.

Like I said before: Watch out for those NASCAR cooties!

Commenter MikeOk: “So does this mean that John McCain will be a sponsor at Burning Man this year?”

Snort. Don’t give them any ideas!

Trying not to toot my own horn here, but I’ve been involved hands-on in motorsports for many years and, IMHO, Mr. Obama is so far out of his league on this one. He has no clue as what it takes to make these cars competitive (nor, I’m sure, would he care) and the last thing I would want is for some politician to be sniffin’ around merely to have a photo-op with one of the teams when we would all know full well exactly why he was there.

If it were up to me, I would say, “You wanna fish for votes? Okeydoke, but you’re gonna have to do more than just stand here shakin’ hands; follow me.” With that, I would lead him up to the starting line where he would be required to stay put for a few minutes to watch while a Top Fuel dragster or Funny Car does a burnout and then make a sub-5-second pass.

Turst me, that’s when he’d know how out of his element he was. Nothing like the sound and feel of 7,000 hp and a little nitro up your nose to make you re-think where you might troll for votes next time….

I’m not trolling for votes - heaven forbid I should ever run for office. BUT - if you can arrange the credentials, I’d be happy to stand there when Ashley, John, Sarge, Hillary (NOT THAT ONE!),etc., make a run!

I also enjoy being at the big end when they blast by.

Quick thought - is there a fueler or funny with 2 seats BO could get a ride in? I sense a defining moment when the get him out of the car after a run.

He doesn’t need the NASCAR vote anyway. Obama will win because some pouting conservatives will either vote a 3rd party, or not vote at all. They are the ones who will put Obama in the White House.

The 49 car has been driven very little this season because of sponsorship issues. The BAM racing team is having problems finding money and has been trying to attract sponsors with a few perks and a discount. BAM Racing even offered sponsors opportunities to purchase a sponsorship package on eBay and Craig’s List.

It makes sense that Obama and BAM Racing are doing this. Probably didn’t cost Obama’s campaign that much, and the publicity BAM Racing gets over this may boost financial interest in the team. But how do the fans feel about BAM Racing switching from Dodge to Toyota earlier this year?

Imagine the pressure driver Ken Schrader’ll face during qualifications. (Obama and BAM Racing are counting on you, Ken. No pressure. Hopenchange, man.) I wonder how Schrader feels, since Ken Schrader has given support to Republicans in the past.

Because the team owners are “staunch Republicans,” it’s interesting that they’d host an Obama fundraiser. Political correctness, an olive branch of bipartisanship, or money’s money no matter where it comes from? How much pressure did the Association for Diversity in Motorsports (AFDIM) impose?

Who knows if this’ll even happen.

I wonder if he does sponsor a car, will it be painted black…oh, sorry…the color we cannot mention? I doubt he will get his money’s worth spending it at a NASCAR function. I don’t think he’ll swing any new voters there. No matter what happens, I’m sure some nut will come out stating how “racist” NASCAR is and the MSM will have lots of special reports about it, especially if a busload of reporters drop in, at Pocono, and troll for negative comments.

What people say publicly to pollsters and how they actually decide to cast their ballot, in the privacy of a booth, are two completely different things; voters may say they support him and the Dems now, nearly four months out from the election, but I doubt they’ll act on it, given the gravity of the issues and the fact BHO is becoming more of a run-’o-the-mill politician with each passing day.

I doubt after he spends everything he gets shoved into that war chest it moves any votes.

What republican is going to vote for a socialist?

I am sure someone will come along on the internet and say “I will, I will.” Two things prove you are a republican and prove you are even eligible to vote.

Are Reagan Democrats going to vote for Obama? Not on your life.

Those Reagan domcrats have John McCain written all over them.

If I were advising McCain I would tell him to take 4 months off and spend it in Sedona. Then he could reappear around November 1st or so, rested tanned, do a couple sunday morning before the election interviews, have spent exactly the cost of the Sedona health camp and wait out the results election night.

While radical I admit, I see nothing coming from him spending millions on advertising that I suspect will move no one.

Barry on the other hand can pump those dollars in to the economy. We need it with fools like Chuck Schumer out there doing everything he can to wreck it.

As a NASCAR fan who happens to be a Republican and an American black man, I think it is laughable to advertise in NASCAR. There are lots of people who are only there for refuge from the world of political crap and to pollute with this type of ad probably will not work. It will however, set a trend, and pave the way for future political advertising in NASCAR. It will also tick off the few rednecks who are not very accepting of black people in general, as attested to by the low number of blacks in the NASCAR organization. I hope BHO doesn’t blow it for those brothers who are working their way up through the NASCAR system by equating blacks, Democrats, and liberals in this over-the-top approach. Can you see his smiling face on a Chevy hood?!

Though I must say, Jesse evidently didn’t reach his target on BHO.
