Obama tries to buy the NASCAR vote

By Michelle Malkin  •  July 11, 2008 12:21 PM

I mentioned Barack Obama’s plans to troll for NASCAR votes last week. SI.com has the details of how the campaign will execute the pander. Guess he’ll be leaving the kids home for this one:

SI.com has learned that for the first time in history, a major presidential candidate may sponsor a race car in NASCAR’s premier series. According to sources, Barack Obama’s campaign is in talks to become the primary sponsor of BAM Racing’s No. 49 Sprint Cup car for the Pocono race on August 3. Details of the agreement are expected to be worked out over the coming days.
A BAM spokesperson has revealed the team will hold a press conference July 23 in Miami to reveal the partnership, currently a proposed one-race deal with an option to continue. Obama will be at the briefing, which will be tied to the “Get Out The Vote” campaign message he spread throughout the 2008 primary season…

…While George Bush was prominently featured on Kirk Shelmerdine’s No. 72 car in 2004, this is the first time a national presidential campaign has actually given its own money to make itself a primary sponsor of a race car. The sport has typically shown itself to be a Republican stronghold, and in recent weeks two-time champ Jimmie Johnson is among the growing list of well-known NASCAR stars who have come out in favor of Obama’s opponent, John McCain.

Like I said before: Watch out for those NASCAR cooties!

Commenter MikeOk: “So does this mean that John McCain will be a sponsor at Burning Man this year?”

Snort. Don’t give them any ideas!

In all - it’s no surprise that a Democrat would want to be prominantly displayed on a race car that does nothing but turn left…..

Which makes me wonder if McCain will try and go for a car sponsorship on a road course - a race where they keep turning left… then right… then left… then right…

    Talk about symbolism….

    (sarcasm-off)
When you go to a music concert, you don’t go to hear John Edwards (or whoever) talk about two americas. Is Obama setting this up as himself a victim, I would expect him to get booed… get booed because spectators want to forget about polotics and enjoy a race… but Obama will play getting booed as proof he is a innocent victim.
So he can make time to go bother sports fans, but not to debate (anytime, anywhere indeed).

If it were up to me, I would say, “You wanna fish for votes? Yeah…I am pretty sure they are not asking Obama to make the call whether or not ole #49 should come pit now or hope he can make it a few more laps on those tires. I’m gonna go out on a limb and say they probably are going to just ask for a nice check, just like they do from any other sponsor.

I’ll betcha Jeff Gordon made the CEO of DuPont do the exact same thing.

Keep your fingers crossed because unlike our politics NASCAR actually has standards to meet before your car gets in a race. We can hope it fails the pre-race inspection and is sent packing. Hopefully the car won’t make it and Obama can scream racism or whatever else he wants but welcome to big leagues where you actually have to prove yourself.
And of course finally if it makes it to the race I hope the car winds up like his campaign, in wall, crumpled up and the back of a wrecker headed back to the hauler for the trip home.

    Chap —

You’re right that in essence what Obambi is doing isn’t really any different than anyone else going after votes.

What makes this so funny is the incredibly unlikely nature of any mix between NASCAR and Obama. It’s pretty far-fetched that this little weeny of a liberal is going to get any traction. (Please pardon the pun folks…)

It’s not like Bubba is doing this. Ole Bill Clinton could actually relate to the typical NASCAR fan. I seriously doubt Obambi ever will….

I agree. Obummer can’t even bowl a 40. I bet beer has never touched his lips either and he sure as heaven will never sit between to fat guys drinking beer at a track.

OK, fine. I don’t necessarily disagree with that. My issue is with the unnecessary “troll” and “pander” language.

He’s advertising, plain and simple. Its not like he is proposing to make the third Sunday in February (or whenever the Daytona 500 is held) a national holiday or adding Dale Earndhart to Mt. Rushmore.

Obama admitted to spending at least two years of his life in a drug induced alcoholic stupor. He’s actually got a leg up over the fat guys.

Seeing the car in a crumpled mess would be nice, but I’d be just as happy if the (surely green) car just ran outta gas.

…and at the press conference afterwards….

PRESS: “Mr Obama, who was responsible for your car’s gas plan, your energy policy to finish the race?”

OBAMA: “First of all, we want to take the “race” out of NASCAR, and so we have taken to calling it a CONTEST. And I ask the powers that be at NASCAR to change their name to NASCAC. Now, my contest team is an inclusive team, where everyone gets a vote, and we have come together, and we have a plan, but your questions cannot drill it out of me at this time. My crew chief Nancy Pelosi will be releasing our plan, um, er, uh, soon.”

I guess we just have different criteria in what we want in a president, Soap. What score does one need in order to be ready to be commander in chief on day one? What do you think McCain is rolling these days?

Depends on how many votes he thinks he could get out of it.

Like a solid history of admitted drug use?

Obama has done more illegal drugs than McCain. He’s got my vote dude.

I doubt McCain can bowl that well since the Gooks broke both of his arms and he can’t left them above his chest. Obambi will kick McCain’s ass in bowling any day.

The only difference between him and our current president is the “admitted” part.

but actually, I am not too fond of him,so maybe you are on to something.

I threw in his bowling as it is obvious he was REEEEEAAAACCCHHHIIIIINNNNGGG if he thinks bowling will make him “one of the guys”. A sub-forty was evident he failed miserably. This NASCAR stunt will do the same for him. You can bet when the #49 car goes into the wall (and it will - if it even qualifies), every fan will rise to their feet and cheer. Some of us will be on the floor laughing our guts out.

To answer your question. If I were to go to a convention of lawyer’s and start spouting off what I know about the law, you guys would have me pegged in seconds – even if I got a score of 40/300.

I’ll admit that perhaps the Obama team hasn’t thought out some of the practicalities as well as they should but I see no issue with Obama targeting the “working class” vote (I hate that term btw). Nor do I have a problem with McCain targeting…well wait…who is he targeting?

Us ordinary guys sit around each others hose and shoot the breeze, watch football – sports

I know my wife feels I do waaaay too much of the watching. I will literally watch anything competitive (except hockey). Not sure if that makes me “ordinary” considering my political views.

Wouldn’t the stench kill you before you could get within 50 yards? Why do you think we go to school for 3 years? To build up an immunity.

Sorry but Obama’s flip flops and shameful pandering, “doesn’t help my kids.”

That’s because my kids are just typical white kids from middle income working parents who pay their taxes, pay their bills and follow the law.

In B. Hussein Obama’s, Jeremiah Wright’s and Al Sharpton’s world my kids are just the next in line to take the blame for anything wrong in the lives of every minority. They will be required to appologize endlessly for whatever perceived or imagined wrong that they can come up with day-to-day. In fact, they are already teaching that to them in school every year.
