Goodbye, California

By see-dubya  •  July 12, 2008 05:21 AM

I’m joining the exodus out of California today, flying across the country to start a new life on the Slightly Less Crazy Coast.

Some things in this state I’ll miss. But a lot, I won’t. I’m going somewhere, I hope, a little more like this.

Anyway, posting will be light out of me for a couple of days…y’all take care.

It’s always a shame and outrage when good people are driven out of their homes and forced to migrate by their politically inane (and insane) surroundings.

I was forced to leave Toronto and move to the only sort-of-American place in Canada, Alberta, because the dysfunctional multiculturalism — particularly in Toronto — and its rampant violent crime, not to mention the prevailing communist ideology left me no other choice.

Good luck to you. I hope you’ll find what you’re looking for.

Technically true, but I think we are looking for quality & not quantity here… But I must thank the bay area, for they are truly the bacon on the America’s wound.

It’s just a shame that all the hard-working people of CA are force to move to ID, CO, etc just make it…

I’ve lived in California for 25 years now and have just about had my fill of it.

High taxes, crumbling infrastructure, environuts, sanctuary cities, bad air, filthy beaches, gangs, crime… California is no longer The Golden State it once was.

I’ll be moving back to North Carolina with its clean air, clean beaches, lower taxes and wide open smooth freeways.

If only they could figure out a way to keep all those damn Yankees from moving there. STG some of you Northerners have no clue about Southern hospitality.

I have lived near Seattle, Eugene Oregon, Chicago and New York. Since 1982, I have lived in Northern California. I have enjoyed living in all of those places for different reasons. I have to laugh at some of the things people here have written about California, to call these comments ignorant would be an understatement. From my home, I can either ride my mountain bike for 5 minutes or run for 10 minutes to get to a trailhead on Mt. Diablo and run or ride beautiful trails for miles and miles. One of the reasons these trails even exist is because people got together and fought the developers who wanted to pave everything over and build subdivisions. The subway station aka BART, is a 10 minute drive from my house and it is 40 minutes into San Francisco where I work. My closet neighbors are a deputy sheriff and a police officer for a neighboring city. On the holidays, most of the homes fly the flag, this past 4th of July, we had a parade through our town and met at the town park for a bbq etc. It’s a town of 10,000, people know each other and for the most part get along. There are no “lifestyle” parades or in your face politics. Our town could be in Oregon, Washington, Illinois or New York State, places where I have lived. Instead it is in California. You may not choose to live here, but I do and my family and I love it here. California is a state, not a stereotype.

A little context please. The event described did happen in one of the states at which lgm vented his spleen. At the time, the pre-KOS libtard set did go ballistic:

National proponents of hate crime laws were quick to pass judgment: Wyoming, rather than being “The Equality State” - Wyoming’s official motto, adopted after it became the first state in the nation to grant women the right to vote - was really the “Hate State.”

My speculation over the cause of lgm’s hissy fit is reasonable and logical.

Your links to things about California you’ll miss brought back some good memories for me. In the late 60’s while RR was governor of CA, I attented CMC (then Claremont Men’s, now Claremont McKenna College after it went co-ed) and took a class from Harry Jaffa, who is a participant at the Institute. While there, I also went to the In N Out Burger in Pomona regularly.

I lived in CA for over 30 years, with time outs for the service and to live in MI, but in 2003, I left and never looked back. I still have family there and have been back once and will go again for a brief time when my father’s health fails. Other than that I’ve seen it all from Hilt to San Ysidro and have no desire to visit. I’ll stick with my own version of Maple Street memories.

Live there, again. Uh-Uh. No way. Not ever. The crowded conditions from Sacramento to the Mexican border, politics and the resultant taxes have spoiled it for me.

I wish you well in finding something you can live with. It’s getting tougher all the time, but there’s still some of it out there if you look hard enough (hint — if you are going to the East Coast, you have to go 200 south of DC to have much of a chance of finding it).

Ditto. Living here in CA is a balancing act, and the threat of more regulations and crazy rules are daunting.

But I haven’t lost hope. The liberal-dominated Assembly should not sit pretty on their “laurels” - they, too, are vulnerable. Folks are finding out the State’s welfare is farthest from the minds of politicians in Sacramento. That most of the libbies are into solidifying their power, instead of making sure government run according to the wishes of its citizens, as in the Perata-initiated recall of Jeff Denham. This brought the ire of Central Valley voters on the Democratic Party-led Assembly. Pols should be very careful about irritating their constituents.

Yes Sheppard was murdered…all murders are savage by definition….However Sheppard’s problem was that he went to pick-up a GUY not a gal, and the guy of Sheppard’s affections didn’t like it, and went overboard in his response.

However, this stuff happens everyday in America when guys try to pick up women in bars and boyfriend shows up…which is why if you have any brains in the first place you try to see if your “lover” is in fact available for you in the first place. Sheppard wasn’t smart enough to even do that (let alone NOT practice homosexuality), and learned the VERY HARD WAY.

The queers want to turn this fool-sheppard- into a martyr (and I wonder for “what religion”, by the way) for their cause.

Sorry I won’t go along with that.

Sheppard was an idiot like the people who show up in the B-section of your newspaper who try dumb stunts like playing catch with a rattlesnake, and end up dead.

Sheppard was and is not worthy of any veneration. get over it.

I moved to California THREE times in my adult life. It was nice living there from 83 to 86 (then moved to Arizona, loved it there). Business brought me back to California in 91, and I stayed until 95. It was a lot more crowded and not as nice as before, in just those few short years.

I moved to Atlanta (hated the weather there), so I moved back to California in 1999. By then, things had become just almost unworkable in CA. We had brownouts from badly handled “power deregulation”, term limits put too many amateurs in the state legislature, so the special interest lobbyists now run the state. The county of Los Angeles teeters on Bankruptcy almost every year because of the MILLIONS of illegal aliens who use the free county health care facilities, and LEGAL residents almost have no access to the system if they require care and haven’t been able to find private insurance because of pre-existing conditions. The freeways had become crowded ALL the time, not just during the 3 hour rush hours twice a day. Liberals were running all the elected governments, and running the quality of life into the ground. It just was so much worse from a quality of life perspective than it was 20 years prior. However, if someone had not come and gone in the intervening years, they would not have noticed the degradation to quality of life while living there.

I stayed until 2003 when business took me back to Texas, this time Austin (I lived in DFW from 78 to 82). I loved Austin, I just didn’t have time to meet people there and it was kind of lonely. I moved back to my home state of Michigan in 2006 to help with my elderly mom. Being an entrepreneur, I can pretty much decide where I want to live.

While I loved the weather in CA, and most of my friends that I have made as an adult are there, I would never move back. The liberals have an iron fisted control over that state and there is no appreciation for hard work and individual rights. People have become callous toward each other and political correctness rules. I am enjoying being back where real people live, I just have to put up with 4 seasons of weather again. While MI is a blue state, the west side of the state is very RED, which is where I live. I believe that this state is turning purple, because more people are understanding that the tried and true tired liberal platforms drag down the economy and don’t produce results.

Hello Rob, I live in Germantown, just outside of Memphis and it is as day is to night. Memphis had 164 homicides last year and we had zero. I attribute that to our highly paid, well equipped police force. As to the skeeters, not too bad. But the humidity can be awful since we have the Mississippi river here. I must admit there are nicer places to live in Tennessee but this is where I retired and the kids are grown up and live in the area. Tenn is divided into three main parts that are quite different from each other. Check them all out on the state web site. Oh, by the way, another thing I like about this area is that there are quite a few gun enthusiasts here. I am retired Navy and belong to the largest private shooting club in Tennessee and I love it.

My wife and I pulled the plug on the “Golden State” back in 1992. I can honestly say that I very rarely miss it. We’ve got twice the house at a quarter the cost in North Carolina with wages that are the same…. better beaches too.

Nope, I don’t miss it at all.

Holy cow, I just looked at the map, apparently 5-Guys are all over now. Just about three years ago they were nowhere but the D.C. area, incredible! And a testament to how incredible their burgers are!

Why Wyoming, Alabama, Kansas? Solidly Republican, geographically diverse, leaches on the body America (getting more federal subsidies than they pay in taxes), not Missouri (my home state).

I think lgm’s pissed at Wyoming because it was the scene of Matthew Shepard’s last drunken barroom pickup attempt.

This incident of murderous bigotry is nothing for Wyoming to be proud of.

dont ever insult my home state of kansas again.

OK, only one more time. In Missouri we had a joke about Kansas: “Did you hear about the guy who moved from Missouri to Kansas and raised the IQ of both states?”

I left California 12 years ago. Was born and raised there - in San Francisco no less. Started moving east and south in the 70’s, but improvement was minimal. Finally got completely fed up and went to Oregon. Little did I think that the Californication would follow me here, but I was wrong. The western side of this state is progressively (pun intended) more and more of a nanny state, and the enviruses have most of it locked up in litigation so that no one can make a living. Naturally, this makes all those former loggers and mill workers and fishermen think the nanny state is the only way to go.

I hope your eastern migration works out better. Looking forward to hearing about it.

Funny, I just got back from a week in California. It’s beautiful and I had a blast, but I am so darn happy to be home (Georgia). Good luck adjusting to the real world (a/k/a red state America).

Welcome to the fleeing crowd leaving CA. Left Christmas Day 2006 for Alabama. Note to California: Your no longer the Golden State but the State of Lost Dreams. Spent 40 years of my life there. We have found many California retirees here including a CHP Captain. Welcome to the free world See-Dubya.

see-dubya, if you’re not coming to Texas, you aren’t likely to find that on the “other” left coast.

BTW, we do have a coast here in Texas. We call it the Gulf Coast. C’mon down, y’all, and you will find the country that was…unless you go to Austin. ;-)

See-Dubya, I lived in Sunnyvale for 5 years (1996 - 2001). Loved everything except for the congestion and taxes. Moved to Florida to give myself an 8.5% raise (no state income tax). Scenery is not as nice, but its a lot more affordable. Good luck in your new digs.
