I find myself wondering if we’re very far from having political satire designated as a “hate crime”.

If it had been the First Amendment in the Oval Office fireplace, rather than an American Flag, the satirist may have more accurately captured what the right “really” thinks about the future under BHO.
My apologies. I do know some conservatives who aren’t so wrapped up in their self-pity that they can recognize that the media and Hollywood aren’t out to get them. They are mostly ashamed of seeing bigots like Ann Coulter, Rush Limbaugh and Savage embarrass their cause. They cringe when they see Michelle Malkin on her hysterical rants, and they would like to see more civility from both sides of the political spectrum.
Hillary Clinton and her campaign, rather than “The Right,” are the true inspiration for this cover.
But that would be more ironic than satirical, wouldn’t it, as Kate McMillan points out at smalldeadanimals?
For once I agree with Barack Obama on something. This cartoon IS tasteless and offensive. But so what? It’s merely a reflection of Obama’s tasteless and offensive worldview.
There will be dissent no matter what. Mr. Obama should take more care in deciding which side of an issue he chooses, so that any tasteless and offensive press is at least tolerable to him and geared (in his view) toward his core beliefs and not his person.
Why doesn’t Obama explain to us exactly why this seemingly very accurate depiction of his beliefs is so “tasteess and offensive”? After all, he’s depicted as sympathizing with a terrorist, something I certainly believe is part of his worldview.
As our esteemed hostess has already suggested, Obama needs to grow a pair.

A local blog (Marquette Warrior) has done a round-up of some of the comments by tons of so-called “tolerant” and “compassionate” liberals in the wake of Tony Snow’s death. This, quite frankly, makes the Obama cartoon look like a walk in the park – yet I don’t hear nearly as much condemnation from liberals about it.
Here’s a sampling of the comments:
So if liberals here act with surprise that we find them less than tolerant, this is a prime example why.
As to Coulter, Rush, Savage, Malkin and hte rest – often, when liberals call them “insulting” or “hysterical”, it’s merely because they’re right. When they’re really offensive or wrong, we call them on it.

Their reaction to the cover of the New York Magazine is typical. What is normal for Republicans happens for once to them and they are aghast and suddenly want to ban free speech and freedom of the press.
Bush never whined. Never pouted about those who criticized him. Not once. With Prez Obama, that will change in a big way.
What’s your point? I know they are popular. I was just saying that I can’t make a blanket statement about all conservatives buying that crap.
For what it’s worth, I love Coulter, Rush and Michelle because they are remarkably intelligent and effective communicators. Plus I agree with them on a lot of things. They are bigots, or at least consciously appeal to bigotry (Michelle less so), but probably no more bigoted than white liberals who think it’s OK to mock working-class whites (or “rednecks”) on My Name Is Earl.
We saw who were the bigots in the primary. And I sat backed and laughed my a$$ off! I am still laughing at when you libtards try to say it was the conservatives doing it. I will continue to laugh in the future everytime the race card is used by your side.

If Obama manages to get elected the press will throw him under the bus and make life more miserable for him than the Republicans ever dreamed. While the MSM always wants to see a Dem in charge, they will turn on Obama shortly after the inauguration as there will be too much ammo and gossip. They simply cannot help themselves and they will be stampedeing to uncover all the dirt and incompetence that is at the core of Democrat politics. (Unfortunately they will never seriously question policy, which is what really matters.) The stories and rumors that will come out of the White House will make those of the Clinton years seem like a Disney movie. It is the one thing about an Obama presidency that gives me hope.

No. Why do you think that you have to be a diehard, rah-rah liberal to criticize the right wing? As I’ve said before, I have conservative positions on many more issues than liberal ones, although for the ones that matter the most to me (foreign policy, the environment) I’m true blue. And I like cherry kool-aid.
I recall back in 2004 how John Kerry reminded me of a story I read back in elementary school, a coming-of-age piece about an Indian youth who had to man up to overcome his childhood moniker of “Haska’a,” or “He-who-cries-when-the-wasps-sting-him.”
Senator Hopenchange is reminding me a lot of Kerry in the exact same sense. And both of them were/are reacting in the same way, by blubbering “…But it was a BIG bee!!”
Yeah – and you don’t see half that condemnation from liberals when, say, Ted Rall creates a racist cartoon, or how the Daily Kos/Democratic Underground lambasts the late Tony Snow.
For that matter – why have people like Pelosi, Obama, and the rest of the Democratic leadership never condemned assassination chic?
You can argue all you want that conservatives are the heartless ones but, by and large, I’ve learned those arguments hold absolutely no water.

I wonder when anyone in the MSM complained about the covers that Time Magazine and Newsweek have done. Time did a cover cartoon of Menachem Begin that was outright antiSemitic. The Time cover had a crude cartoon of Begin with a hooked nose and a maniacal expression on his face. The Time article began with the phrase “Begin, it rhymes with Fagin”. Fagin was an antiSemitic caricature in some British literature. And Newsweek did a cover story with the Star of David crushing the dove of peace. And Newsweek managed to make the Star of David look very much like a Nazi swatstika. I can’t recall anyone in the MSM complaining about Time or Newsweek.

Or maybe it was just about frying the big fish and letting the little ones be. When a high profile Dem says something ignorant and embarrassing, they hear it from the party (Hillary on the Obama-Bobby Kennedy connection, Joe Biden on “clean” African Americans). As a GOPer, I’m going to side with the Obamamessiah and say that this is in amazingly poor taste. But not for the reasons he (or you) might think.
The point of the cartoon: It’s a slam against we right wing/neocons who’ve allegedly mis-characterized the Obamamessiah and his wife since he’s been running. It takes all the things allegedly attributed or said by the right—like Obama is secretly a Muslim, the fist bump, etc.—and satirizes them in what our worst White House nightmare might look like.
Yeah, I get the satire and joke. And it’s being played on us.
Again, the Left’s…and not just Liberal’s…hypocrisy knows no limits. They all own special mirrors in their homes that only reflect what they want to see and filters out anything that would be self-editorializing. All of these examples and many more will be completely lost on each and every one of them. Any of them who will actually ry and argue the fact will only deny that their caricatures are offensive, will claim First Ammendment Rights, (which we all know only work for them) and decry the failure of the Right to have a “Sense of Humor”.
However, I am more concerned that rather than them being offended by this as a joke, it is more of a case of “Truth Hurts” that has them all bent out of shape.

On CSpan last night was a broadcast of some group on black leadership. I watched ’cause I try to see the other side. But it was sickening. Maybe hundreds in the room, all black liberals. Couldn’t have been a Republican in the room. All talking about black this, black that, and black leadership … what about LEADERSHIP apart from color? Isn’t it part of the problem that we see ourselves as black or white? Does it really matter if your doctor is black, your car mechanic is black, your mentor or mentee is black, your presidential candidate is black? Does it matter? It doesn’t, does it?
Seems to me, there are 3 reasons people might find this cover ‘outrageous’.
1) They don’t understand satire.
2) It strikes too close to home to some liberals who may be concerned about Obama’s associations.
3) They don’t understand satire AND it strikes too close to home.
None of those are actually reasons to deem this magazine cover ‘outrageous’.

It was unintentional on the part of the liberals at The New Yorker, who wanted to exploit what they think are ‘unfounded’ fears, but what they succeeded in doing was an actual portrayal; an accurate reflection of Obama’s character. He’s accumulated FARC, William Ayers, Hamas, Louis Farrakhan, and Kim Jong Il among his friends, admirers, and supporters.
The picture isn’t that far off.

I always do. That’s why I always quote John McCain as having said “We have sort of become a nation of whiners”.

I hate to say this but I agree with the Obama campaign, the New Yorker cover is tasteless and offensive. It doesn’t matter whether they’re trying to poke fun at the Obama’s or at the alleged worst fears of conservatives. Crap is crap and the New Yorker isn’t fit to swat flies with.
That said… Man up dude, politics is a contact sport and you have to be tough enough to take a few cheap hits.

That’s a good point, GJ. Humor/satire is based on the element of truth. This is like how the Sat Nite Live skits lampoon the MSM for falling all over itself to lavish praise on Obama.
If you want to win you ATTACK. Screw the idea that we must run a civilized, nice campaign. We should hit Barack HUSSEIN HUSSEIN HUSSEIN Obama with everything we got. This country is worth a full court press. We must stop him and if cartoons on a page can get them this upset… well, there must be a lot more that we can draw. I don’t like McAmnesty, but the process doesn’t say that I get who I want as a candidate. He played the game and won the nomination. Now we MUST get behind him and make him president and then fight like hell for what we believe.
