Horror in Knoxville update: Trial stalled for one year
It must be maddening for the families of Channon Christian and Christopher Newsom. I know you haven’t forgotten the young couple brutally murdered in a racially-charged case in Knoxville, TN. I haven’t, either. The latest? Justice delayed in the trial of suspect George Thomas:
Knox County Criminal Court Judge Richard Baumgartner today granted a request to drop the speedy trial for one of four suspects in the torture-slayings of a Knoxville couple more than a year ago.
Attorneys for George “Detroit” Thomas said they dropped the request after receiving new information from prosecutors last week.
Among the information were 260 pages of interviews by federal agents.
Thomas is charged in the January 2007 slayings of Channon Christian, 21, and Christopher Newsom, 23. Prosecutors say the couple was carjacked and robbed and then taken to a Chipman Street residence where both were beaten, raped and slain.
Thomas originally was to be the last of the four to be tried, but his attorneys pressed for a speedy trial.
Baumgartner granted that request, and Thomas’ trial was to begin Aug. 11.
He now will be tried last, with a trial date set for Aug. 10, 2009.
Investigators say Newsom was shot and his body burned. Christian’s abuse lasted hours longer and she eventually was hog-tied and stuffed into a trash can where she suffocated.
Others charged with the brutal slayings are Letalvis Cobbins, Lemaricus Davidson and Cobbins’ girlfriend, Vanessa Coleman.
All four face the death penalty if convicted.
Some 700 people had been tapped as potential jurors in the case.
The judge in the case had earlier ruled that prosecutors can use Thomas’s jailhouse conversations as incriminating evidence in the trial.
Maybe when the Washington Post’s massive staff gets through with its 12-part series on Chandra Levy’s murder, they can spare a reporter or two to cover the ongoing horror in Knoxville.

Words fail me. I am so sorry for the two famlies. I pray they will someday get justice.

Sadly, we can only pray. These families’ grief will last for years — and be dragged around every time the slightest delay in getting these [insert your own expletive here] to trial and seated on Sparky.

There is a similar situation in Williamsburg, VA. An illegal immigrant name Oswaldo Martinez raped, tortured and murdered a 16 year old girl named Brittany Binger. The case has been delayed for a number of years because the illegal is a deaf mute and must be brought up to the courts required standards of competence.
Imagine for a moment the horror that the Binger family has been treated to by the courts. Also imagine for a moment that the illegal was able to get across the border in Mexico, make it a couple of thousand miles to Willliamsburg, get a job and living facilities, – and that is just the surface stuff we know about.
The national courts are a disgrace in the Christian/Newson case and also the Oswaldo Martinez case.
Words can’t say how much I wish death upon the murderers and that the victims find peace in heaven.
You can call me what you want when this post is over. I’ll take it with a grain of salt. This story makes me angry, nay livid, everytime i see those poor people’s picture.
These animals do, in fact, deserve a speedy trial.
What they do not deserve, however, is fair and humane treatment afterwards. These sick, twisted, disgusting subhuman pieces of trash deserve nothing less than the same sadistic, excrutiating punishment inflicted on them, only in greater measure.
I had absolutely no empathy, sympathy, or concern for this type of social excrement, and the faster they find their way into the burning hells, the faster these 2 victim’s families can find peace.
I say let them fry. Extra crispy. Get these trials done, and lets throw out the trash.

The families made it through one of the trials, so far. But, it must be taking a toll on them. Eric Dewayne Boyd was convicted for his part in Federal court in April of this year. Boyd taunted the family with outbursts like, “Bring it on!” Fortunately, the system was able to bring it to him. And, as Mr. Newsom put it, “One down and 4 to go. We got more to go on this one too. Today ain’t the last Eric Boyd’s going to hear from us, that’s a guarantee.”

I echo that sentiment wholeheartedly. Yet, you’ll have people say they’ll suffer more if they just get life in prison. How? These animals aren’t going to feel any remorse, and the fact they still get to breathe the same air I do when they wouldn’t allow their victims the same courtesy makes me absolutely sick.

I’m not really sorry…but I dont see 3 hots and a cot, free cable tv and exercise in the rec yard, and all the other things LIVING people get to do (even in prison) as being a punishment to fit their disgusting crime.

In my hometown last week, 2 young 20 something men were kidnapped, tied up with chains, sexually assaulted and threated with death over a 4 day period. Luckily for them, they made it out alive.
I used to wonder whether there was more evil in the world than before, or whether we just hear about more of it due to our increased ability to communicate. I have come to believe it is the former.
Such a horrible, horrible story. I can’t imagine being one of the people to come upon the bodies of the two victims in this case. Brutal.
In the meantime, taxpayers are paying how much for each year each of these scum sit in jail waiting for a trial while reminiscing on their exploits as if it’s some badge of honor? $50000? $100,000? And you know damn well there’s not the slightest shred of remorse in any of them, except that they got caught.
How about they work hard labor minimum 18 hours a day to pay for their incarceration in the meantime.
IMO, the death penalty is too good for these scum. How about crushed nutsacks, castration with a rusty knife.. you get the idea. Then feed them to the rabid Afghan or Iraqi terrorists who seem to take pleasure in using portable hand-drills to drill holes in the heads of their captors before dragging them behind vehicles until they die, then stringing their carcasses upside down from poles and leaving them for the crows to eat. That’s what these scum deserve, and even that’s too good.

Why should it be a federal matter? This shouldn’t be a federal matter at all.
The first one was tried in Federal court, red. Apparently, each defendant’s circumstances are a little different and some didn’t meet the criteria for the Feds to step and prosecute like they did in Boyd’s case.
I was amazed when I heard the other day that the judge was going to allow the recorded phone conversations from jail on the Thomas case.

But something still smell a bit off if you know what I mean…
People in the U.S. are protected against Cruel & Unusual punishment, those who commit act such as in this case however are MONSTERS, so evil that there needs to be a punishment so agonizing that matches the crime. Also the families of the victims deserve a speedy trail and to hell with the monsters that did this to two humans.
It’s just a shame that we’ll never know what these two promising young people could have contributed to society. No amount of punishment for the criminals will ever bring them back.

I am all for going back to the old way. Thomas Jefferson said that the death penalty should be carried out within a fortnight.
Punishment applied in the eyes of the public would be more effective. Ninety & nine on the hard rock pile, chain gangs, and other physical labor would make prison a place you would not want to return. Not that I want to go to one even now. I think Joe Arpaio has the right idea, bring back the posses.

Unfortunately, our criminal justice system has less to do with justice and more to do with how much money the lawyers can get for their time. Delay, delay, delay wastes money for both sides in the trial. I feel sad for all families victimized this way.

You should be blaming the prosecutors in this case. Springing information on the defense a week ago is going to result in a necessary delay. As much as these guys deserve to die the most painful and horrible deaths imaginable, the process is a valuable one for all of us. The government MUST be held to a high standard of proof since government is the only authority to take someone’s life, liberty, and property.
Way OT, but how stupid does a woman have to be to name her child Letalvis or Lemaricus? 70 IQ? 65? 60?

Where are the Al $harptons and Je$$ie Jacksons when something like this happens. If the colors would have been different, we all know that we would be buried in mobs, protests, and endless news stories. Where is the balance?
I come at this from the opposite angle. Cases like this reinforce my belief in a higher power, whether that makes me simple minded or not. Knowing that animals like this will not receive true justice here on earth, the only consolation I have, the only way I can make sense of this evil, is to believe that they will be truly held accountable on the other side. Otherwise, the misery that we suffer through in this existence is truly pointless, and I can’t accept that the vastness of this existence, the strength of the feelings we develop for others, for nature, for the wonder of all that’s around us, is only for the few years we’re on this earth.
Perhaps I am a simple-minded fool. But I’m ok with that. It keeps me sane.
Get a CCW, and carry a pistol. Teach your children self-defense, starting with pistolcraft. Don’t be a defenseless unarmed victim!
Our judicial system, sadly, is filled with feckless appointees and stooges. The best justice is that which can be meted-out via self-defense when confronted by miscreants and scum. Our system is ill-equipped to keep anyone safe despite all the hyperbolic claims to the contrary.

Was the government an accessory in these murders. By that I mean, did their policies, our policies, encourage the birth of these suspects. Did the government pay to feed, clothe, and house them. Is this a result of our tax dollars at work. I don’t suppose anyone will ever answer these questions.

upbringing in a financial class has nothing to do with committing these crimes. I grew up in the welfare system and in subsidized housing. It is upbring within the home and being taught the difference between right and wrong that was missing here. It is being taught responsibility that was missing here. If anyone is to blame – it is the parents of these individuals – they apparently failed as parents to instill values within their children. Now their children sit on or will be shortly sitting on death row and the parents only have themselves to blame.
You got that right. I remember during the crime and looting during the Rodney King riotssome libtard acquaintances were saying it was because those people were not getting their “basic needs” met. I looked at them and said, “Not all poor people are criminals, and not all criminals are poor!” It made them blink and shut up.

I have heard it more than once from White Liberals that we must be understanding when blacks kill whites–143 years ago their ancestors were slaves. That was pretty much the situation and justification in the OJ trial.
And may this case be a lesson why ALL honest people should and must carry a firearm and practice with the damn thing. Tennesseans are a kind, fair-minded and just people. As bad as this case looks right now, I still believe the people of that great state will demand that justice be done.
It is amazing that this trial will be postponed for so long. I just don’t understand this. What was the rationale for it? It shouldn’t take so long to put these animals behind bars.
What’s even more ironic are the many people who defend these animals and say it wasn’t a race-based crime. What happened to these two young people has raised more questions about the black community than it has answered. Any time I hear a black American “claim” that whites are more racist than blacks, I will point to what happened to this TN couple.
I’m amazed that more than a year has passed since Michelle broke this story on Hot Air, and still, nothing but eerie, amazing silence form the MSM. She must have been right when she said that this crime isn’t useful to the MSM.
if this had happened to a member of my family, I think I would literally be going mad with rage and anger. These five need to have their day in court, and get their just and due sentencing. The families of the victims have suffered long enough.
