Charlie Rangel gives up one of his luxury dens
File under Democrat culture of corruption. Well, well, well:
Representative Charles B. Rangel has decided to move his campaign office out of one of four rent-stabilized apartments he leases in Harlem, his spokesman said on Monday.
Mr. Rangel has faced intense scrutiny since The New York Times reported last week that a developer had allowed him to lease rent-stabilized apartments in the Lenox Terrace luxury apartment complex at a time when some tenants are being evicted from such apartments around the city.
One of the units — a one-bedroom apartment that he paid for with money from his re-election fund and from a political action committee — had been used as a campaign office, despite city and state guidelines that require rent-stabilized apartments to be used solely as a primary residence. Because that apartment is rent-stabilized, Mr. Rangel paid $630 per month, while similar market-rate units in the building rent for $1,700 a month and higher.
In a fiery news conference on Friday, Mr. Rangel said he saw nothing improper with having three rent-stabilized apartments — all adjacent on the 16th floor — for his family’s residence, but said he would review the propriety of using the fourth apartment as an office.
Mr. Rangel’s spokesman said the congressman would not discuss details of his decision.
“Mr. Rangel has indicated that he is not willing to say any more,” the spokesman, Emile Milne, said.
For once, he’s been rendered speechless.
House Ways and Means Committee Chairman Charles B. Rangel is soliciting donations from corporations with business interests before his panel, hoping to raise $30 million for a new academic center that will house his papers when he retires.
The New York Democrat has penned letters on congressional stationery and has sought meetings to ask for corporate and foundation contributions for the Charles B. Rangel Center for Public Service at the City College of New York, a project that caused controversy last year when he won a $1.9 million congressional earmark to help start it. Republican critics dubbed the project Rangel’s “Monument to Me.”
The congressman has corralled more federal money as well, securing two Department of Housing and Urban Development grants totaling $690,500 to help renovate the college-owned Harlem brownstone that will house the center, according to HUD and school officials.
“It is a personal dream of mine to see this Center at City College, which resides in my congressional district and where so many talented young men and women from the community have gotten an excellent education,” Rangel wrote in a March 7, 2007, letter to real estate mogul Donald Trump, one of the business leaders the congressman has solicited.
Ethics experts and government watchdogs say it is troubling that one of the nation’s most powerful lawmakers would seek money from businesses that have interests before the committee he leads. Rangel’s panel has broad jurisdiction over tax policy, trade, Social Security and Medicare.
More generally, many say it is a bad idea to name a facility after an incumbent politician who might be tempted to channel public money to it rather than to more worthy causes.

If he thinks having 3 apartments just for his family alone, who are we to question????
/sarcasm off.
Can we play “Guess Which Party”? Can we, huh, can we?
So what’s new with corruption in congress; the platform that Pelosi ran on, to remove? I’m still waiting for Rep. Jefferson to go to trial…someday…maybe. It’s the same old, same old. “Screw the American people: I’m in it for the money and power.” As long as the American people believe that their congressman is fine, it’s the rest of the them that are bad (9% approval), it will go on, and on.
What do they know. This is the most ethical and moral congress in history!
Ok, so he gets at least a total of $4000 a month off on his rent?
No, no corruption here.
This man doesn’t need any rent stabilized apartments. How does he explain to his voters that he is taking away apartments from those who need a low rent apartment? Then he has the nerve to decide what happens to tax revenues. I am tired of elected officials abusing their positions to get perks!
Draining the swamp, draining the swamp, draining the swamp, democrat style!!!
rambler, who are you to question him!!! He is part of the most ethical congress in history!!!* He would never take unethical perks!!!* They are draining the swamp of unethical congresspeople!!!*
*does not apply to democrats.
“In a fiery news conference on Friday, Mr. Rangel said he saw nothing improper with having three rent-stabilized apartments — all adjacent on the 16th floor — for his family’s residence,”
…except that the law says you only can have one
Rangel is another example of how out of touch Dems actually are. This man only thinks of how to line his own pockets and those of his own family instead of doing the people’s work. Are the constituents in his district actually satisfied with the “good work” he’s doing?
If it’s a politician with a (d) after his/her name, and your constituents are predominantly black, of course you’re satisfied.
why is this thieving @$$clown still in office? Is not anything he’s EVER done enough to get him removed??
Ugh.
the Charles B. Rangel Center for
Public ServiceCleptocracy at the City College of New YorkHeh, heh, has a nice ring to it.
Where are all of our liberal denizens?
It seems that everyday a member of the most ethical Congress evah(!) is being called out on the carpet for their illegal ranglings. Perhaps, that’s why they love the illegal aliens so much, birds of feather….
Sonofdy is right, he’s got a “D” behind his name so nothing wrong here. Move along.
Rangel and the Dimocraps improprieties will go no where, they will not investigate any of this because it is a Dimocrap, they will continue to suck the coffers dry for their pet projects.
Flexing his muscle as chairman of the Senate Appropriations Committee, Sen. Byrd steers funding toward W.Va. roadways
Before long Byrd will have a resolution before Congress to change West Virginia to Byrd Land.
nothing to see here people..just move along…
Funny that his surname is pronounce ‘Wrangle‘.
It’s Boosh’s fault!
Seeing how the corruptocrats in congress will never impose term limits upon themselves, would it be wrong to advocate assasinating tyrants before they destroy this once great nation?
Charlie is Jesse Jackson III with better hair.
Scum bags all.
The ‘D’ must stand for Dyslexia. They never see anything IMPROPER, must read PROPER I M.
It doesn’t matter nothing is going to come of this and his constituents will probably even stick up for this jerk while he raises their taxes. I’m surprised he even gave up 1.
you can’t get rid of people like this
Looks like he decided to use Obama’s infamous ‘Walk Away’ move. The ‘Walk Away’ move actually started amongst criminal elements, some decades ago, when it was discovered that walking away from a crime scene attracted less attention than running away.
Can someone please explain how someone who makes a six-figure income actually qualifies for a rent-controlled apartment?
Or is this like San Francisco, where every apartment in the city is rent-controlled regardless of income?
Charlie Rangel is 78 years old and his kids still live with him? No wonder he needs a price break.
Tell that to Robert Byrd.
Nan-cee! I’m ho-ome!
Nothing to see here folks. Keep moving.
I built a monument to Rangel this morning. Just before I showered and shaved.
It seems to me that the MSM has been overlooking Charlie Rangel’s ridiculous taxpayer-subsidized, real estate empire for decades.
Perhaps it was due to sending their cameras and reporters to the outside gates of Mitt Romney’s, Donald Rumsfeld’s and Dick Cheney’s privately paid-for residences to drum up their class-envy storyline over the years?
Sort of like the book advance scandal that was peddled by the MSM when Speaker Newt Gingrich wrote a book in the mid 1990s, but was then quickly and quietly dismantled when Senator Clinton decided to cash in by placing pen to paper in 2001-2002.
He is easy to find. After you get off the Robert Byrd Bridge, Turn left at the Robert Byrd Federal Building. Go two blocks to Robert Byrd street and when you get to the Robert Byrd Boy’s and Girl’s Club, anyone standing outside should be able to tell you that the Robert Byrd lives in Washington DC.
I agree, but i like the sound of “Charles Rangel, Prisoner Number 5879435-32C” better.
He will say more if his butt gets hauled before a grand jury. But as we all know, liberal Democrats never face the judgment of law. Sooner or later though, this tyrannical Democrat rule will end, my fear is a return to the vigilante.
Term limits:
Two Terms. . .One in Office, One in Jail.
LOL!! So true.
Heh! Me, too. It was nearly indestructable…third flush got it though.
Ron Rockstar & right_on—-now, I KNOW you poop bigger than charlie.
LMAO
One thing about Rangel, Jackson has never had the stones to say he was going to do anything to Rangel…I think NYC rules as far as Chutzpah.
AlohaGuy, I believe he has. I think he said he wanted to wrangle Obama’s ACORNs
and Rangel has invited the NY Times reporter over for Christmas - something about chestnuts roasting on an open fire.
So a program meant to benefit low income renters is actually making rich Democrats richer. No wonder Rangel is quoted as saying:
It’s also no wonder why the NYC Rent Guidelines Board has this note posted on its website:
Sonofly,
Maybe Rangle stores money in his freezer like one of his collegues. With four apartments, that’s 4 freezers worth of storage?
Another example of the brother being held down by the man. When will my peoples be free?
I have a dream. One day I will have three apartments while po folks get squat. Just like Rev. Wright said, G—-America!
Not since the Charleston slave auctions on BOGO Mondays.
I’m sorry but what the he!! is he doing in a rent subsidized apartment anyway?
I wanna ‘nother stimulus… I want it now! (stamp feet) gimme mo money.
This type of corruption is common for Democrats.
William Jefferson D-LA is just one example. We had 27 Democrats out of about 50 in our SC House of Representatives sell their votes for about $1,500 a few years back. They were convicted and thrown out, thank God, and our State was finally cleaned of these dirty people.
Too bad the Federal Government can not do the same for dirty people in the US House. This started in 1957 with someone by the name of A. Powell.
Just one more Black race hustler using white guilt to shake down donations for personal use. A couple of bucks for a filing cabinet and millions for walking around money.
I imagine he can use a rent-stabilized apartment to store that filing cabinet.
It must be karma. We have an article about slezeball antics and a Bill Maher banner pops up on the MM site. That other sleazeball, Bill Maher, will be appearing at the Dodge Theater in Phoenix.
Let’s hope we have one BIG dust storm August 9th.
I take it “rent-stabilized” is the PC term for “rent-control”? Man we need that where I live. I pay more than that in rent and my apartment is probably 1/10 the size of Rangel’s.
starlightwoman,
Not 1 apartment - he had 4! Which still leaves 3 after giving up 1.
And isn’t Rangel the guy who leases a CADILLAC on taxpayer money? He is given a car allowance like his peers, and the option of what is rented/leased for what monthly amount is at the Reps’ discretion (so-called). Rangel leases a Cadillac, saying it’s the car that his “constituentes expect to see (him) in” — or something close to that. Other Reps. lease Chevy’s and Fords, Rangel opts to lease a Cadillace. This guy’s really greasy.
Misspelled “constituents” ^^.
