The APS is also sponsoring public debate on the validity of global warming science. The leadership of the society had previously called the evidence for global warming ‘incontrovertible.’”

The American Physical Society reaffirms the following position on climate change, adopted by its governing body, the APS Council, on November 18, 2007:
“Emissions of greenhouse gases from human activities are changing the atmosphere in ways that affect the Earth’s climate.”
An article at odds with this statement recently appeared in an online newsletter of the APS Forum on Physics and Society, one of 39 units of APS. The header of this newsletter carries the statement that “Opinions expressed are those of the authors alone and do not necessarily reflect the views of the APS or of the Forum.” This newsletter is not a journal of the APS and it is not peer reviewed.

We had a dedicated band of taxpayer advocates out in force, pointing out the high economic cost of global warming alarmism – starting with $8 a gallon gasoline. Of course, we saw plenty of hypocrisy — especially the fact that Gore didn’t ride his bike or take public transporation to the event. He didn’t even take his Prius! Instead, he brought a fleet of two Lincoln Town Cars and a Chevy Suburban SUV! Even worse, the driver of the Town Car that eventually whisked away Gore’s wife and daughter left the engine idling and the AC cranking for 20 minutes before they finally left!”

I thought it was time for the country to “get off oil.” Hey, you first Al Gore! Stop using oil and practice what you preach, then you can come back and tell the rest of us how to do it, too. I am simply amazed that the MSM has not picked up on it yet! I watched NBC, switched to CBS, had NBC on the ‘last channel’ so able to cover both. No coverage! I do not understand. This is a MAJOR disappointment. I will continue to monitor, but I am discouraged with the timeliness of this news.

I will say that the grossest summer I ever experienced was the summer in DC between my college graduation and the start of law school. For about a 2 week stretch it was like walking into a sauna.

Yea, Al Gore is a huge hypocrite. But I do have a few problems with this report:
“Spewing air conditioning?” It’s apparent that the interviewer was thinking on his feet, but this just didn’t make sense to me. Air conditioning increases the load on the engine, requiring more energy usage, but “spewing A/C?”
(BTW… I’ve read that using air conditioning is actually more fuel efficient than driving with the windows down.)
As for three cars, isn’t that because he still has Secret Service protection? It seems to me that they provide the vehicles and agents, and they specify what vehicles are used and how many. I doubt the protectee has any say in the matter.
Of course, he could theoretically opt out of their protection to reduce the energy usage. Are past Presidents and Vice Presidents able to opt out of Secret Service protection?

When Pres. Bush came to office, the non-sense about taking down our big, beautiful hydro-electric dams died out.

No, he doesn’t have SS protection any longer. That is only reserved for former Presidents and as we know he was not elected (nor selected, as he’d hoped).
And you are correct, using the A/C results in about a 1 MPG decrease becasue of the additional pull on the engine. But, driving with the windows down increases drag by reducing aerodynamics, but conincidentally, also only results in a 1 PMG decrease.
As for the limo driver, idling uses approximately 1 cup of gas every 4-6 minutes. Think of all the caribou he has endangered!

My point was about the dweeb in the video who thought we should be paying the same as Europe for gas, and the suggestion from most Enviro-wackos that public transportation should be all anyone needs. Another point is the waste of money spent on light rail in cities that will never see the riders to support it’s operation, yet libs keep pushing for it.
As for them paying taxes so I can drive on nice paved roads, how can that be when many public transportation systems can barely operate on the fees they charge their riders without subsidies?
I bet I pay much more in vehicle taxes, gas taxes and license and other fees than those who suggest I should take the bus.

The problem with your argument is that the people that drive their cars and pay those burdensome socialist taxes, also pay most of the taxes that subsidize public transit. So, we get hammered TWICE and those that take public transportation pay $32 a month for unlimited rides; I pay for part of that, too.
If public transportation gave me door-to-door service, as my car does, I’d take it. But it doesn’t. It’s not convenient.
And when all the privately-owned cars are gone, and the revenue from gasoline taxes is less than the approval rating for the Nancy Pelosi/Harry Reid run congress (hard to do, I know), what will that do to public transit prices? Think about that, and this too. If everyone drove a Toyota Pius (because those that do are holier-than-thou) what would that do to gasoline demand? Lower it. So how would the oil companies make their money? Raise prices. If everyone only used 1 gallon of gas a week, we’d be paying $25 a gallon for gas. They’re going to make their money someway. The only answer is DRILL FOR OIL. If the Chinese can do it, right off our own shores, why can’t we?

Public transportation never gives anyone door to door service. I used to take it when I lived in DC. I had to walk from my apartment to the station and then from the station to my office.
It’s simple, really, and quite capitalist. You, as a user of a single car cost more to the infrastructure than one who takes public transportation. Are you saying you shouldn’t pay more? Should we all pay the same, regardless of our use? That is very communist.
I thought it was all “supply and demand.” Demand goes down, Supply goes up. Prices go down? What are you? Some sort of commie that doesn’t believe in the free market?

No, I’m citing the author of State of Fear as my authority. Read it. It is completely footnoted with many authorities. Michael Crichton has forgotten more about globabl warming than Al Gore will ever know.
When Mr. Crichton was researching State of Fear, he believed to a degree that humans were causing global warming. After researching and writing the book, he now knows it’s not true. That’s why he speaks out against spending money on something that it’s devotees cannot prove. You should read ALL of Mr. Crichton’s speeches. Open your eyes and grasp reality.
My other sources are books like “The Politically Incorrect Guide to Science.” Read that, too. Liberals have no comprehension of science. They just use it as a club to silence anyone that does real scientific research and disagrees with them.
The worst part is Al Gore has all the same information at his disposal but refuses to accept it. He can only make money when people are scared. He focuses that fear into $$$ for himself and his liberals pals.

I would say 3/4 of my office that does “asset protection” are Democrat.
But less anecdotally: the bar as a whole skews liberal and most lawyers ultimately help rich people keep money. They may call it asset rpotection, estate planning, contract law, real estate, tax planning, mergers and acquisitions…but it ultimately boils down to keeping wealth with those that hold it.

Did you even read the article??? Michael Crichton is a doctor and makes a living by researching and doing analysis for his novels. Yes, they are works of fiction, but his work also uses scientific fact.
Al Gore is a politician who has made his living telling people what they want to hear (thankfully for him there are people like you who ignore facts so that he can afford his enormous energy bill). I think I’ll go w/ Crichton on this one.

Libs and asset protection, doesn’t that fly in the face of the communist manifesto … er um liberal redistribution of wealth. After all isn’t that what the liberal agenda is all about?
And every time I’ve seen a lawyer in action they make a simple issue complicated. I wouldn’t need asset protection if it weren’t for the slip and fall of your profession.
You are right: where it works, it works. But I live in a rural part of western Massachusetts where no bus will come in my lifetime. Yet I pay my fair share of taxes for roads etc. as a part of my fuel tax. How do the bus riders contribute to that? And why do I have to pay for the subway system in the eastern part of the state, even though I haven’t used it in more than 20 years?
No doubt there is, but do the riders pay for the actual service, as auto drivers do? Actually, auto drivers pay more (see above) as we pay our fuel taxed into the general fund, where they subsidize public transportation.
See my preceding remark. I believe the question relates directly to that: the bus riders do not, and could not, ride their buses without the contributions of the car drivers and the innumerable fees and taxes we pay. It would be like them having to buy collision insurance even though they don’t own a vehicle.
Again, you make the assumption that everybody who drives a car has an alternative in the public transportation world. That is not true. Sometimes it is not a “hassle” or inconvenience, but an impossibility. And again, why should car drivers subsidize bus riders etc.? The users of public transportation should pay their own way. They should be satisfied that they are being “more efficient” and helping the planet without requiring subsidies from car drivers.
To use a word that is horribly misused by the Democrats, it would be more “fair.”

I read “State of Fear” and despite being dramatized, the inherent science is correct and cited, and the fictionalization of the econuts is not to far off the mark (after seeing what ELF etc. do, I don’t find it particularly unbelievable). A cursory review of geologic climatic history quickly demonstrates the fallacy of AGW, although we are wrecking the planet in other ways (see China).
I don’t believe that he has started any crackpot religions, so we will ascribe the L. Ron Hubbard remarks to the Scientology dustbin.
To summarize: Al Gore, as a scientist, is a buffoon, but a clever buffoon, who is making money hand over fist selling himself carbon credits and charging outrageous speaking fees, while refusing to debate anyone on the topic of “global warming.”

So the IRS has to respond with more detailed and complicated rules to try to rein in those that prey on loopholes and violate the spirit and intent of the law. So then, the new regs in place, people or businesses have to come up with new strategies and the IRS then has to counter with even more complicated and specific laws to close off those. It is a cat and mouse with one side (the rich people that want to keep more money) trying to stay one step ahead of those that would take it.
We are paid to know what the rules of the game are, but for the most part, it is not us that makes the rules.
But this is seriously OT. If you hate lawyers so much, then good luck representing yourself when the time and need arises.

I do think it is a fair and obvious point that public transportation is not viable for a large swath of our population. But couple points:
1) At least on the state level, transportation infrastructure is not completely funded by gas taxes, some of those funds come from the general treasury. So it is not accurate to claim that you are subsidizing the strap hangers and they are not subsidizing the drivers.
2) Taking public transportation offers public goods that benefit those that do not even use it. Primarily less congestion and less pollution, not to mention the indirect effect of lowering demand for oil, making the price you as a driver have to pay for it lower.

Regarding the IRS… it isn’t so much gaming as the legislators providing loopholes for their benefactors.
I deduct everything that isn’t nailed down. All properly documented.
Instead of donating to an inefficient govt, I put that money into charities that put most of the money into action.
I’d be more than happy with a flat consumption tax. No corporate taxes which would encourage growth, and we grab the underground economy which doesn’t pay their fair share of taxes anyway.
As someone who has had to read wayyyy too many IRS statutes, regulations, treasury decisions, revenue rulings, private letter rulings, TAMs, GCMs, determination letters, etc… I can say with confidence that this is just not true.
People with money want to keep it rather than give it to the government. I am not condemning this impulse, just stating as fact. So they arrange transactions that may or may not meet the letter of the law, but clearly are trying to circumvent the intent. The IRS eventually gets wise and the law, whether by change in statute or regulation or whatever, changes, adjusts, and becomes more complex.
I am not saying that there are not inefficiencies or unnecessary complications in our tax code. But for the most part they are the product of real life circumstances rather than politicians or lawyers.

The IRS is too big and for the most part not necessary. Simplify and statistics (I’m not looking them up at 1 am) show that the govt will collect as much or more.
Accountancy should be more worthless than than being a lawyer. I have a finance and and accounting degree and was a CPA.

I must say, I have been intrigued by T. Boone Pickens’ commercials, as of late. Some of the figures he cites are sobering in regard to the increase in foreign oil imports and the costs.
I just watched his video, where he details more of his plan on his site.
I read above where someone mentioned that he is voting for McCain. I must have missed that part on the site. But, it doesn’t really matter. But, if we did go with wind energy, which he outlines mostly for Midwest construction of the mills, would Teddy Kennedy finally concede that it is okay for one to go up in his neck of the woods too, if the heartland accepts the majority of them in their back yards?
