Limousine liberal video of the day: Gore and his gas-guzzling fans exposed!; Update: What global warming consensus?

By Michelle Malkin  •  July 17, 2008 09:03 PM

Update: Top news this morning…”The American Physical Society, an organization representing nearly 50,000 physicists, has reversed its stance on climate change and is now proclaiming that many of its members disbelieve in human-induced global warming. The APS is also sponsoring public debate on the validity of global warming science. The leadership of the society had previously called the evidence for global warming ‘incontrovertible.’”

Update: A clarification from APS about its stand:

The American Physical Society reaffirms the following position on climate change, adopted by its governing body, the APS Council, on November 18, 2007:

“Emissions of greenhouse gases from human activities are changing the atmosphere in ways that affect the Earth’s climate.”

An article at odds with this statement recently appeared in an online newsletter of the APS Forum on Physics and Society, one of 39 units of APS. The header of this newsletter carries the statement that “Opinions expressed are those of the authors alone and do not necessarily reflect the views of the APS or of the Forum.” This newsletter is not a journal of the APS and it is not peer reviewed.

You’re going to love this video from Americans for Prosperity, whose staff caught eco-hypocrisy on full display at Al Gore’s big energy sermon in Washington, D.C. earlier today.

Ed Frank writes: “We’re back from Al Gore’s big global warming speech, and boy did we have a great time! We had a dedicated band of taxpayer advocates out in force, pointing out the high economic cost of global warming alarmism – starting with $8 a gallon gasoline. Of course, we saw plenty of hypocrisy — especially the fact that Gore didn’t ride his bike or take public transporation to the event. He didn’t even take his Prius! Instead, he brought a fleet of two Lincoln Town Cars and a Chevy Suburban SUV! Even worse, the driver of the Town Car that eventually whisked away Gore’s wife and daughter left the engine idling and the AC cranking for 20 minutes before they finally left!”

Enjoy the spectacle and be sure to watch the very end:

    Dimsdale,

I do think it is a fair and obvious point that public transportation is not viable for a large swath of our population. But couple points:

    1) At least on the state level, transportation infrastructure is not completely funded by gas taxes, some of those funds come from the general treasury. So it is not accurate to claim that you are subsidizing the strap hangers and they are not subsidizing the drivers.

Ah, but you forget that in addition to the excessive fuel tax, there is are the excise taxes, property taxes (these two depending on the particular state), registration fees, Mass Pike tolls, inspection fees, sales taxes, mandated insurance, and, maybe more obliquely, revenues raised by sporadic (as opposed to constant, meaning “let the drivers go unregulated for a while, letting speeds creep up etc., then cracking down to fill town/city/state coffers), all of which goes into the General Fund. And don’t forget wear and tear. Straphangers don’t pay that on their transportation. We all do.

    2) Taking public transportation offers public goods that benefit those that do not even use it. Primarily less congestion and less pollution, not to mention the indirect effect of lowering demand for oil, making the price you as a driver have to pay for it lower.

The implication being that cars bad, bus good, right? I fully encourage the use of public trans where available (I would do it myself, despite some of the colorful characters I encountered back in Boston), but it should be a “pay as you go” system. Let those who use it bear the brunt of the cost, just as we car drivers do. The advantages bestowed upon the car driver by bus (bus = all public trans for brevity) riders is miniscule compared to the costs. You could just as easily say that car drivers free up seats on the bus for straphangers!

Fair is fair, again to use that much maligned word.

Regarding the IRS… it isn’t so much gaming as the legislators providing loopholes for their benefactors.

As someone who has had to read wayyyy too many IRS statutes, regulations, treasury decisions, revenue rulings, private letter rulings, TAMs, GCMs, determination letters, etc… I can say with confidence that this is just not true.

People with money want to keep it rather than give it to the government. I am not condemning this impulse, just stating as fact. So they arrange transactions that may or may not meet the letter of the law, but clearly are trying to circumvent the intent. The IRS eventually gets wise and the law, whether by change in statute or regulation or whatever, changes, adjusts, and becomes more complex.

I am not saying that there are not inefficiencies or unnecessary complications in our tax code. But for the most part they are the product of real life circumstances rather than politicians or lawyers.

Two words: flat tax. Absolutely minimal deductions, say first dwelling, and children (let the screaming begin!).

Simplification obviates the complexity that permits loopholes. If you say “you have to pay 15% of your gross income,” then that is it. When pols start to add various exceptions for whatever reason (usually political donations), the trouble begins.

I wish, as much as you, that more scientific organizations would make their voices heard in opposition to the anthropomorphic global warming hypothesis, but unfortunately, the claim made in the DailyTech article is a bit of a stretch. The APS has not altered their official stance, as is mentioned on their homepage: http://www.aps.org/

    APS Climate Change Statement

    APS Position Remains Unchanged

The American Physical Society reaffirms the following position on climate change, adopted by its governing body, the APS Council, on November 18, 2007:

Chap – here in Houston, TX, we have a 7 mile long lightrail that goes down Main Street. Between the several billion dollars it cost, the multiple accidents caused by its very poor placement (seriously should look it up, it would be funny if it weren’t true), the fact that it covers so little land and really goes nowhere, and the fact that payment is on the honor system, ridership may be up, but revenue isn’t. When a system is bleeding money as profusely as lightrail is (at least our lightrail) you can’t tell me it’s more efficient or practical as cars.

    Gore’s proposal is stupefyingly ignorant.

Seems he would destroy all existing electricity-producing plants running on coal, oil and natural gas and replace them with “alternative sources” that have no freakin’ chance, simply as a matter of physics, of generating an equivalent amount of energy.

Wind is the most stupid of all ideas. When wind dies, so does the electrical grid its based on. You can’t store energy generated by wind power. It takes time for backups to kick in, and meantime, there’s no power. (and, of course, you have to bear the cost of the backup even when it’s not being used). Wind turbines are eyesores. Even T. Boone Pickens, who is pushing wind, says he doesn’t have any wind turbines on his huge farm ….”because they are ugly”!!!!

Nuclear, of course, remains out of the question, because it is dangerous —-even though France (France!!) is generating almost 80% of its elecric power from it.

And, of course, destroying existing plants would be to commit economic waste on a grand scale.

It’s like the fool who suggested tearing down houses in CA in order to reduce the existing housing stock and “thereby” drive up the prices of the rest.

New underground systems will cost billions, require new taxes, disrupt neighborhoods during their construction — which takes years. Buses emit diesel fumes or consume electricity.

If drilling our way to cheaper oil won’t work, why would digging our way to public transport work any better?

Green, by the way, is the new Red.

The rapid-fire technique is used frequently the Howard Stern Show (to celebrities) and the Church of Scientology (to protestors).

It’s called “bull baiting”. They try to provoke the person they are interviewing into fits of anger and outrage. Then when they play the tape back, they can say, “See how crazy these people are??”

The American Physical Society reaffirms the following position on climate change, adopted by its governing body, the APS Council, on November 18, 2007:

“Emissions of greenhouse gases from human activities are changing the atmosphere in ways that affect the Earth’s climate.”

Yeah. I am sure that property taxes aren’t passed on by the landlord to the tenant. No doubt he is happy to just eat that cost. And the poor renter doesn’t even get a mortgage deduction!

A truly sh*tty comparison. the renter doesn’t risk losing his home or having his wages garnished if he doesn’t pay his rent. In my state, it takes at least six months for a renter who stiffs his landlord of the rent to be evicted, and the renter almost never has to pay his back rent.

But miss a quarterly property tax payment? The town tax assessor is on you like white on rice.

And by your “reasoning”, chapoutier, EVERYTHING a non-tax payer buys has federal/state taxes on the profits built into its retail price, so EVERYONE pays income taxes, right?

What does any of this have to do with the fact that a landlord will pass on the costs of real estate taxes to the renter?

Have you ever signed a triple net lease? That is where the renter pays the insurance, utilities and property tax. Guess what? The rent on a triple net is a lot cheaper than on a non-triple net. Why? I’ll bet you can figure it out. The landlord may be the direct payor of the tax, but if you don’t think it is ultimately paid by the tenant, you are delusional.

And by your “reasoning”, chapoutier, EVERYTHING a non-tax payer buys has federal/state taxes on the profits built into its retail price, so EVERYONE pays income taxes, right?

It is not as neat and tidy a line as with property taxes and a renter, but if you don’t think that the taxes a business has to pay are worked into the price of its goods or services, again, you are delusional.

Exactly my point: most of the sources of AGW theory aren’t even honest enough to admit that they have no clue (Gore) or are trying to get grant money and know what they have to say to get funded.

You have to at least scan the paper an read the relative points, especially the Conclusions.

I presume that if/when Monckton is shown to be correct, you will come around to the “denier” way of thinking? More and more scientists are coming around after examining the facts. Let us hope it is before the AGW mob destroys our economy following “Chicken Little” Gore.

I just don’t know how “believers” dispute facts like simultaneous warming on other planets or significantly more severe global warming that predated man, not to mention SUVs (like the last interglacial period, about 125K years ago, where sea levels were 15 to 18 FEET above present levels).

Heck, just having to use words like “denier” and “believer” shows what a cult AGW is versus real science.
