Michelle O’s stimulus package: $600 earrings

By see-dubya  •  July 17, 2008 01:54 AM

Actually, Michelle Obama has a point here: the $600 stimulus package tax rebate is kind of a gimmick. But she chose a typically Obamesque way of expressing the thought, complete with an implication that taxpayers are wastrels who will just blow their money on luxuries:

“You’re getting $600. What can you do with that? Not to be ungrateful or anything. But maybe it pays down a bill, but it doesn’t pay down every bill every month.

“Barack’s approach is that the short-term quick fix kinda stuff sounds good. And it may even feel good that first month when you get that check. And then you go out and you buy a pair of earrings.”

Have you seen the price of arugula at Whole Foods earrings at Tiffany’s?

Of course NY Times blogger Kate Phillips rushes to set a pick on the blogosphere:

Now, that was a joke. She didn’t come up with a $600 price tag for a single pair of earrings on “The Price is Right” or anything. But watch for her comment, and it’s already been suggested around the Web, to be misconstrued as a bit elitist.

It was just a botched joke, scolds the Times, who knows the Obamas’ true, noble, pure, humble hearts much better than anyone else “around the Web”. You’re just misconstruing. There is NOTHING ELITIST ABOUT THEM! STOP SAYING THAT!

You know, she’s right. I’ll just have a cup of coffee and chill out:

Snobmug

P.S.
If Michelle O thinks the rebate was a lame idea, who should we blame?

Glad to see you made it in one piece. now the fun of the three year task of unpacking begins.

I just love how when Pres. Bush gave us all those “rebates” a few years ago, the Dems and Liberals everywhere went on ad nauseum about how it was going to bankrupt the Government, how the money was not ours to get, how it was the worst economically bad idea of all time etc.

Then, when it suits them, suddenly they change the name of it to exactly what Pres. Bush said it would do…stimulate the economy…and it was the best thing to ever happen to America.

So Mrs. Messiah thinks the whole thing was a bad idea because someone might have been able to reward themself with a nice toyu, or actually pay off a bill that has been haunting them for quite some time. We used it to make a few car payments.

It must be really nice to be so freaking rich that an amount of $600 of YOUR OWN MONEY that is being returned is so small as to think it will hold no significance to them.

I’m sorry, but ANY amount of money that is being returned, that you had not planned on getting and was extra over your budget, where you can sit and decide whether to be frugal or silly with it, is ALWAYS a welcome event.

Then again, I have not seen a single news article thatshows The Messiahs returning or refusing said “Stimulus” check. In fact, i have not heard of a single person who claims that it was a stupid, bad, ill thought out idea returning or refusing said check.

I guess as long as they still get it, it is just as good to bitch about it as it would be to bitch about not getting it at all.

    But hey…they aren’t elitists…just misunderstood.

First of all, there’s no need to be grateful or ungrateful – IT’S MY MONEY. I don’t owe anyone a thanks for taking what’s already mine. If anyone, I should be getting a letter of thanks from the IRS for allowing them to borrow my money.

Second, she says a stimulus check pays only one bill, not every bill, every month? Is she really implying the federal government should be paying our bills every month?

The stimulus checks didn’t stimulate anything in this house, except to eliminate some consumer credit.
