Saying goodbye to Tony Snow
Tony Snow’s funeral will be held this morning at 10am at the Basilica of the National Shrine of the Immaculate Conception in Washington, DC. President Bush will attend. The service is open to the public. Info on the Tony Snow Family Trust is here.
There are tons of stories out there of Tony’s everyday kindness, collegiality, and professionalism–from his fellow journalists, politicians, bloggers and Internet activists (whom he read voraciously, by the way, long before the MSM had caught on), and complete strangers. Like this:
In 2004 my wife Susan and I, along with our friends, Eric and Sherry, vacationed in Washington, DC. We all had different sites we wanted to see and took turns choosing between the various museums comprising the Smithsonian, Arlington and the memorials. But my wife had what I considered at the time to be a rather unusual tourist destination: the Fox News DC bureau. With such awe-inspiring sites as the Lincoln Memorial and the Capitol Dome available to us she wanted to see Fox News and, she hoped, catch a glimpse of Brit Hume. I knew it would be interesting but with so much history around us and so many other points of interest I secretly believed we should be doing other things with our time.
I had no complaint, of course, as both she and Sherry were excited about it and, after all, we all four watch Fox News faithfully. We arrived at the bureau on time for our appointment (Susan had called ahead) but they seemed unsure of what to do with us…
…As we waited in the lobby we talked about our trip so far, what we should do next, and how it looked like we were not going to get a chance to meet any of the Fox News anchors or correspondents. Then Susan or Sherry, or perhaps both, exclaimed in an excited whisper “here comes Tony Snow!”
Hearing this he came over and greeted us. The first thing I noticed about him was how tall he was. Eric and I are both about six feet, three inches, so we do not meet many people that we have to look up to, and yet we had to look up to Snow. But what I remember most was his big smile; his big, genuine smile. Here was a man who served as speechwriter to the first President Bush and would soon serve as White House Press Secretary to the second. But at this particular point in his life he was a busy newsman. Successful, talented, and among the top names in his chosen profession he nevertheless took about five minutes out of his day just to chat with us. He asked where we were from, what we did for a living, if we were enjoying our trip, and where we were headed next…
….I still don’t meet too many people that I have to look up to. But of Tony Snow, I can say that, even had he not been tall, he was still someone you would look up to.
TV green rooms are filled with self-important blowhards and rude bigmouths. Tony was always a bright, warm burst of infectious energy in that stuffy environment. That sunshine smile will be missed by so many more than will be able to fill the pews today for the funeral service.
Godspeed.

He will be sorely missed for a lot of reasons….he was a true good hearted journalist in a media where that is rare…and more’s the pity for that
Eternal rest grant unto him O Lord.
And let perpetual light shine upon him.
May he rest in peace. Amen.
A true gentleman. Prayers for his family today.
I have admired him for over 20 years. I am deeply saddened by his early departure from earth. My heart breaks for his family. We also lost a true patriot.
I, too, also admired him. He always had something intelligent to say, which made listening to him, a pleasure. I hope that since the funeral is open to the public, and President Bush will be there, the extremists will leave it alone and show respect…for once.
He will be missed. God Bless him and be with his family.
Vaya con Dios, Tony. Say “Hello” to President Reagan, Charlton and Jesse when you get to Heaven.
Thank you, Tony, for your witness and may we all live as you did…all out, full throttle, loving those whom God puts in our path.
All of my prayers for his recovery were as much for me, as for Tony. He was so loved, and I still cannot think about him without tearing up. He has received the “graduation” he looked forward to, and as he said, “God doesn’t promise tomorrow, but he does promise eternity!” I can hardly wait to see him again with the Lord. God speed, Tony.
To his family and those who knew him personally, my condolences.
I enjoyed his talk show. I will miss his soft, yet correct approach to politics, and his natural kindness, which always came through.
I have been praying almost constantly for Tony’s family and now have a place to put my prayers into action by donating to the Tony Snow Family Trust. Thank you Michelle for the link. You can start donating online on Friday. Please consider doing so. He gave up financial security for himself to serve his country and his president and was the best White House press secretary ever. Perhaps this is so hard for me because I am also nursing my husband through the ravages of throat cancer and Tony was and still is such an inspiration. God speed, Tony, and your family will be well taken care of even though they will miss you terribly as will we all.
Tony was the best. Condolences to all his family and friends. He will be missed.
All mt best wishes go to his wife and children. The world will truly miss this true lover of humanity. He was really FAIR AND BALANCED…
Our family will miss Tony Snow as well.
R.I.P. and God Bless You.
Tony is with God in His promised eternity, but I weep at our loss of this good man.
May our Lord comfort and sustain his family.
Thank you, Michelle, for giving us the link to the Tony Snow Family Trust. Tony gave up a lot to serve his country, and I want to thank him by helping his family.
Hail Mary, full of grace. The Lord is with thee. Blessed art thou among women and blessed is the fruit of thy womb, Jesus. Holy Mary, Mother of God, pray for us sinners now and at the hour of our death. Amen.
+May the souls of the faithful departed, through the mercy of God, rest in peace.+
First Russert then Snow. The news business is getting pretty thin of competent people. Snow will be greatly missed.
I take comfort knowing Mr. Snow is no longer in pain. Godspeed.
A good man and a tremendous loss to objective broadcasting. I remember getting frustrated by Mr. Snow, during his Fox News Sunday days, when I thought he was going too easy on his Democrat guests but upon reflection, I see now he was just being fair. He was one of the last of his kind.
Since i challenged lgm to do it, i should at least step up to the plate first.
Mr Snow was a class act, intelligent and decent, and fought the good fight both in his public life, as well as in his personal life and with his health.
I am sorry to see such an upstanding individual fall under such circumstances.
May the planes receive him kindly.
A sad loss indeed.
Amen.
Well said sir.
I enjoyed that cartoon with Tony Snow and St. Peter: “God, do I have a press secretary for you!”
I just reread Fannie Flagg’s book “Can’t wait to get to heaven” [great book, BTW]
I can just imagine Tony enjoying interviewing and chatting with all the good people that were already there……
