Food crisis, global depression worsens

By see-dubya  •  July 18, 2008 02:30 PM

Not only are people cutting back on organic food, but now NPR reports that some people can’t even afford meat:

So Nunez and her daughter are mostly stuck at home.

The rising cost of food means their money gets them about a third fewer bags of groceries — $100 used to buy about 12 bags of groceries, but now it’s more like seven or eight. So they cut back on expensive items like meat, and they don’t buy extras like ice cream anymore. Instead, they eat a lot of starches like potatoes and noodles.

It’s one thing to hear that on the radio, but it’s another to see it on NPR’s website:

Perspective.

I’m telling you, it’s getting hard out there.

I dont think its that, as much as getting the local zoo to send Jumbo over is a time consuming and costly process, as well as the fact that she doesnt wanna carry a kid for 2 years at a time.

Well ya got me, I didn’t give birth to anything (well maybe the occasional errant thought) but my wife did give birth to something that grew into a teenage son.

Sambo, the “work ethic” may have died with the generation before the most recent two. Granpa was a GM worker for 45 years, which is not dispositive but has been known to result in a sense of entitlement, which in his kids’ generation may have transferred from GM to Uncle Sam.

These folks would have to walk to downtown, about two miles, to have a plethora of job opportunities. People do it, and they probably would benefit. If the 19-year-old worked for minimum wage, she could double the family income even after taxes and probably even a health insurance premium.

First the disclaimers: I am NOT a liberal and I don’t believe in a pass for laziness. That being said…

In the US, there’s a high correlation between obesity and poverty– NOT because “poverty” now comes with cable TV, but because Ramen noodles at 10 for $1.00 are cheaper, more filling, store longer, and are easier to prepare than veggies at $2.79/lb. Hungry on the go? Unless you’ve brought your own whole-wheat pita bread or a banana, you’re going to be eating cheese crackers or grabbing a 300-cal. candy bar. I’m in grad school; there’s a reason I know this (and a reason my fridge is full of apples and pita bread).

Ironically, some assistance such as WIC will not pay for the healthier foods, because they are considered luxury items. You can get a box of Sugar-Frosted Chemical Bites for $4.00, and that’s covered, but a box of Kashi GoLean– which has whole grains, 13g. of protein, and a lot more vitamins and minerals– is Right Out.

This isn’t true - you can certainly buy 2% milk vs whole and you can buy grain cereals and forego the sugar frosted flakes..sorry, but you are way off base on this one. I will agree that people who live in poverty are more likely to be over weight…but I do not believe OBESITY is a given!

102 dollars of free food money a month because I am too lazy to work and weigh as much as Obama’s bus. Hmmm, how to eat healthy on that budget. I got it batman! Head to Costco (only need one person in the whole family with one, I’m sure the whole lot of them can come up with 50 bucks between them for a years membership).

50 pound bag of rice: 10 dollars
10 pound bag of frozen mixed greens: 6 dollars (get 3 bags): 18 dollars
20 pound bag of pinto beans (for the protein and fiber): 10 dollars
Giant bag of 6 Romaine lettuce heads: 2.50 (get 4 bags) 10 dollars
Red wine vinegar to use on salad (giant sized Costco bottle): 7 dollars.

Total to eat healthy and cheap and enough to feed a family of 40 for a month: 61 dollars before sales tax

Hell, she has 39 bucks left. Might as well kick in a 5 dozen pack of eggs for 7 dollars, a 10 pound bag of yellow onions for 5 dollars, and two 12 packs of peas and green beans in a can for 12 dollars. New total: 80 dollars

Yeah, real tough to eat healthy these days and skip out on meat and have enough food for a small village.

NPR failed to pluck my heartstrings with this article.

How on earth can a 40yo NEVER have worked a day in her life? That’s blows me away! And then complains that she can only buy 7 bags instead of 10?? I shop for a family of 4 and I manage a week of groceries in about 6 bags - and we eat pretty well (and exercise!).

Get off the couch, lose some weight, find something you’ll be interested in doing and go out and find a way to do it - here’s the truth: employers are turned off by obese people. A trim, attractive person is going to get hired over an obese person. It shows without a word how motivated you are. It may not be right, but that’s how it is.

I started bagging groceries at 17, worked on work study programs and slinging coffee through college, applied for internships, worked my way to what I’m doing now. I got laid off once and didn’t have a job for 2 weeks because I busted my ass to get another one.

I always shop the sales at regular grocery stores or at Trader Joe’s (good food at low prices) so I am not seeing the price go up like maybe others are. Ocassionally I may get something off of sale price but it’s usually because it is something I didn’t account for which is rare. I buy meat typically on sale and usually eat chicken but have a hamburger a few times a month. I don’t buy junk so that pretty much eliminates wasteful calories/money.

Actually, Erin, I thought your post was well thought-out and written, representing the challenges many on the rolls do face with the social service system.

However, personal responsibility should come first. The choices made by this family has more influence on their dilemma than the system.

What is it with the left picking the wrong poster children (cough ::Graham Frost:: cough)?

As to what you can get with WIC and food stamps - way back when I was pregnant and widowed and was on welfare for a brief time. While WIC gives you the food or limits you at the grocery store to certain choices - the proverbial block of government cheese - with food stamps (which are more often a sort of debit card and not stamps anymore) you can shop as you please, as long as you’re not getting alcohol and cigarettes.

The article says that they’re getting food stamps specifically, so they are NOT being restricted to certain food choices.

I also took a few minutes to look up their town and county. It’s about like anywhere else, I’d say. It has a courthouse, community college, fast food places, the usual businesses. There’s jobs there; as much as there are anywhere. But I imagine most employers would think twice about hiring those women; they’re a workers comp case looking for a place to happen.

So Nunez and her daughter are mostly stuck at home.

The rising cost of fast junk food means their gov. checks gets them about a third fewer bags of wendy’s burgers — $100 used to buy about 12 bags of double cheeseburgers, but now it’s more like seven or eight. So they cut back on expensive items like toothpaste, and they don’t buy extras like ice cream onion rings anymore. Instead, they eat a lot of starches like hash browns and donuts.

Looks like a couple of Medicaid/Medicare abusers my son was talking about last night. He is a Pharmacist Tech at Wal-Mart (about the only game in town here) working towards becoming a documented drug pusher in the next couple of years (Pharmacist). He went off on well fed people like this badly in need of a bath/shower along with some dental hygiene tips that were milking the system for all it was worth and how they went off on him because they would have to pay $4 for a prescription that was not authorized for them or how they would try to us the system to pay for an X-Box with games or even groceries. He had both of us in stitches going into a full blown very descriptive rant.

One thing I can say for our son he has his head on straight and he is getting a wonderful first hand education on people that have grown rather large sucking on the Government teat. I believe these large women need to not only knock off their meat and ice cream consumption they need to take it a little easy on the starches too.

No car? Boohoo - get a bike. You haven’t worked a day in your entire life, including the 10+ years prior to this alleged debilitating accident that made you depressed for 17 friggin years, so the lack of wanting to work was clearly a pre-existing condition.

Stop making excuses and living off our backs. Social Services are there to help people who genuinely need it in an emergency until they can get their head above water, not so some fat lazy cow can sit around doing nothing for decades at the expense of others who actually have to work to survive.

I wonder if you own your own home too? I have no car, pay huge rent in NYC, and am putting myself through college so I can better support myself and my other half. I’ve never been on a benefit, even though I’ve been entitled to it after an employer went under.

You’re expecting some sort of pity party fatso? All you’ve earned is a slap in the face. I’d kick you in the ass but I’m afraid I’d never get my shoe back.

Okay, granted, in winter in Ohio, that could be a problem. But 7 or 8 months of the year a bike will get you where you need to go, and they should be able to put aside money to get the van fixed for use in the winter. Problem solved, you’re a genius, you should run for office.
