Rapper who wears “Nigger” t-shirt criticizes Fox for “racism”

He’s Nas. She’s Kelis. They are race-baiting rappers wit’ attitude. And now he’s leading the charge against Fox News Channel’s alleged “racism.”

Rich. Just rich:

New York rapper Nas has joined a protest against FOX News.

Citing what he calls “race baiting” and “Obama smears” by FOX, Nas will join ColorOfChange.org and MoveOn.org to deliver more than 620,000 petition signatures demanding that the network end its “pattern of racist attacks against black Americans,” among them presidential candidate Barack Obama and his wife Michelle.

In a statement to media, Nas, ColorOfChange.org and MoveOn.org announced the petition will be delivered to FOX’s Manhattan offices on July 23 at 2 p.m. ET.

In joining the protest, Nas cites FOX’s portrayal of the Obamas as outsiders, as well as an on-screen graphic referring to Michelle Obama as “Obama’s baby mama” and the confusing of Obama and Osama by a pundit, who joked that they should both be assassinated. In February, Bill O’Reilly talked about a “lynching party” to deal with Michelle Obama.

“FOX poisons the country with racist propaganda and tries to call it news,” Nas said in the statement.

Wait a minute. Portraying the Obamas as outsiders is racist?

Isn’t that how the Obamas want to be portrayed?

The “baby mama” back story is here. And the background on Liz Trotta’s comments is here. As for O’Reilly, he was actually defending Michelle Obama. But never mind.

And regarding Obama/Osama confusion, will Nas and his grievance-mongering legions be targeting Dan Rather and the many other left-wing media members of the Osama/Obama club next?

What up?

I have felt my entire life, that a man is just that, “a man,” until he proves otherwise. He then earns the labels he receives from others.

It seems that no matter how hard we try to conform to the color-blind principle that we have been preached to, those that benefit the most from that “principle” seem to be the first ones to bring up “color;” e.g. “my people,”
the “black experience,” “people of color,” Congressional “Black” Caucus, “Black” Entertainment Television, National Association for the Advancement of “Colored” People, “Black” Panthers, “Black” Muslim, etc.

It seems to me that this emphasizes a victim mentality, and the constant reminders of their skin color indicates a feeling of inferiority. What ever happened to the belief espoused by their hero, MLK, that a man should be judged not by the color of his skin, but by the content of his character?

I’m getting really tired of their constant complaining. Whenever we try to move beyond color, they just have to drag us back. IMHO, nothing will ever change the perspective for some in the black community, regardless of the outcome of the next presidential election. Should Obama win, that win will do nothing but embolden the militants in their ranks.

Nas, you may be a moron, but instead of wasting your life, how about improving schools in the minority community? Or seeing to it that black men man up and 68% of black children aren’t born to single women? Harsh? Get used to it. Equality is officially here – stop complaining and do something positive.

This is a minor point, I know, but Kelis isn’t a rapper. She’s an alt-R&B singer (she was initially compared most often to Alanis Morisette) who has actually had quite a few big hits, and she dresses like your average New York City/Lower East Side/Post-punk hipster (in fact, her aesthetic is FAR from hip-hop). If her pants look at all “wacky” to you, welcome to thirty years ago. It’s called “retro.”

As for the jackets, Nas released an album recently that he originally wanted to call “N*gger.” Pre-release, based on the (obviously intentionally provocative) name, it got an awful lot of (awful) press — most of it debating his stated (post-modern, philosophical) reasonings, and ultimately (out of pressure from all sides) he changed it to “N.” Anyway, the jackets were intended to make them walking billboards for the album, not the word. There may be no distinguishing the two when a title like that emerges, but I’m just providing a little context.

Ironically (and believe it or not), Nas is widely regarded as one of the few rappers who actually eschews male posturing, bitches’n'hos talk and bang-bang-shoot-’em-up narratives for more cerebral material. He gets a lot of mainstream coverage for that reason.

Lastly, I don’t fully understand the debate about the use of this word. (I don’t know why anyone — including Nas — would use it. Unless, of course, you’re a fan of racial slurs, in which case, have at it, I guess.) Honestly, are you itching for a reason or some justification for using it? I mean, my gay friends call each other words (you can guess which ones) that I would never call them, and I never think, “Here’s my chance to use all those offensive words about gays!” I’m not going to argue the merits of reclaiming words or deriving power through subversion of language, because I don’t expect this is the sort of forum where people are terribly interested in discussing or attempting to deconstruct those concepts. My point is, I don’t really care if they use them, but I have no desire to, whether they do or not. This strikes me as an analogous situation.

I was about to ask who the two self-described “Niggers” in the photo are, but I now see that the second paragraph explains.

I believe “Nas” was raised on the taxpayer’s dime in an area of Queens NY called Long Island City. I’m not sure about his “bitch,” “ho”, “shorty,” (whatever he calls her) Kellis – the one with the “Nigger” jacket.

Long Island City used to be a waterfront area where many different European immigrants used to live and work. Old photographs from 80-100 years ago show dirt-poor ladies and gentlemen (dressed to the nines) walking with parasols along the East River, or convening by the thousands to cool off in one of the largest public pools ever constructed at the time.

Now, LI City is a ramp off of the 59th St. Bridge where you can go if you want to get your head shot off by pimps, drug dealers and/or other “respected” leaders of that community.

I believe these recreations are what “Nas” talks really quickly about on his recordings.

    What a shame.

No. Rap isn’t a “black thing” no more than PeeWee Herman is a “white thing,” even though far too many American blacks regard/excuse it as a legit facet of “our culture”, and that phrase-concept has been the curse of what’s been happening in “black America.” The ultimate sad thing about it is since just after the Civil War, black Americans have fostered the idea that being black is a cultural onto itself, with devastating reasons in terms of individual self-esteem and self-reliance and diversity in mainstream America. No other race in the nation has railroaded itself into a mono-cultural pigeon hole like that with a false sense of comfortable community and racial pride that tolerates corrosive values. It’s that “if there’s a “black leader”, so who’s the white leader then?” idea. Unfortunately it will take gonads and more generations to cleanse this attitude and mindset even it started today.
One more thing; if black children can freely sling the word nigger around on mass transit without a glare from black adults, there’s no reason why white Americans can’t avail the same lexicon. It’s the goose thing.

Sir, not all black children use this word. In fact, many share the same resentment of the word as their parents. Anyone who has seen me post here, knows I’m against the word in all circumstances. Period… Yes, this includes Rev. Jackson.

Nas says that he wore that shirt to promote his album which (paraphrasing) used the word as his way of taking back the term. However, with the outcry over the “N-Word”, Nas changed his album to… no name at all. But alas, Ms. Malkin will probably not mention that and will continue to use that picture to try and prove her point.

Back to the thread, I find it interesting that Ms. Malkin and the Seattle PI author omit this (from Reuters):

Another anchor called a televised fist bump between Obama and his wife a “terrorist fist jab,” they said, and talk show host Bill O’Reilly discussed calling a “lynching party” to deal with Michelle Obama after criticizing her patriotism.

Will Ms. Malkin talk about that incident at the top of this thread like she responded to all of the other allegations? To date, she has not commented on that at all…

    Hey Les,

My Dad grew up one neighborhood over (Woodside-Boulevard Gardens to be specific) and LI City was always a cesspool throughout the 1970s, 80s and 90s.

I made friends with an artist who rented a warehouse around 44th Ave, between 11th and 21st Streets who lived on the top floor (illegal!) and threw outrageous parties on the roof.

I can tell you that between 1994 and 1998, those side streets – not too far from the public housing where “NaS” grew up, was hooker, pimp, and drug dealer central. (It seemed like LI City was the last ‘Wild West’ outpost that the Giuliani Administration tackled.)

If you were referring to the Citicorp Tower as the large bank with a presence in LI City…they have been there as long as I can remember…right along with the pimps and the hos.

Glad to hear that many spots have been converting to high end condos (I’m guessing that this was something that happened post-2003?) My gut tells me that, with those notorious Queensbridge public housing towers still a stones throw away, a slight downturn in economy/city services could make thing very difficult for those buying million dollar+ condos in that area.
