[...] One of the attendees, who had been asked to make phone calls on behalf of McCain, said that he spoke to one lady who said, “Don’t call me again. I’m going to vote Republican, but I can’t let anybody know. It’s got to stay a secret.” Another person recalled a party he attended a few months ago. When he mentioned, discretely, that he was a Republican, a young lady sidled up to him and whispered, “I’m conservative too, but don’t let anyone know. I also have two friends here. I’ll point them out to you. They’re also secret conservatives.” Incidentally, I was unable to interview either of the people who told these anecdotes because both were afraid that any more details might give away their identities and harm them professionally. (Clearly, in their lines of work, they need two resumes, one for public consumption and one that is their secret one.)
Lonewolf: Great post--I have experienced the same thing--my older sister (the one with all of the degrees) hasn't spoken to me and my Republican husband for over 3 years.
How sad.

I agree with everything you said. (Fellow LJer here…) But I sort of hate you for being able to go to ComicCon. Are you going to Dragon*Con in Atlanta over Labor Day Weekend?
Maybe I can put together a “Democrats for Dolores Umbridge” pin by tomorrow.
I would totally wear one of these. (It’s SO true!)
I got a Roslin/Airlock 08 campaign shirt from Glarkware that I intend to wear on Election Day. Just avoid the confrontation all together… that is, unless someone wanted to debate about how much better the Baltar Presidency was. Heh.

No, I live in SoCal, so DragonCon is a long expensive haul for me while Comic Con is not ;).

LOL the Roslin/Airlock pin. They gave away a bunch of campaign buttons for different Star Wars characters at Comic Con, so I guess I can wear one of them ;).

Regarding seeing “Obama’s mug” everywhere, someone wanted to do a group of “Obama Fangirls and -Boys” (literally her words) for the D*C Parade. That someone describes being a “fanboy” or “fangirl” for Obama is telling and disturbing for those who know what those terms connote.
Events like that shouldn’t be about politics; it should be about letting loose and having fun with 50,000 other geeks.

I agree. As it turned out, some vendors had Obama stuff for sale and the campaign set up a booth across the street from the convention center. Liberals politicize everything. I wish I could stand there with a bullhorn and tell the geeks that once Obama has his Civilian Force up and running, there's not going to be any time to read comics, play video games, or read movie/t.v. rumors on Ain't It Cool News because all of them will be working for the glory of the State instead. Hard to be a slacker when the Lightworker demands you toil for the betterment of society ;).

Oh, I understand what the whole fangirl/fanboy thing means. It may be disturbing but it's also kinda true.

When I challenge her about why she is so dissatisfied with her country which has afforded her a rather luxurious life and exactly what it is she wants to change, this glib, articulate litigator has no answer.

A little confused here - how can one be a Christian and a conservative? Don’t Christians combat racism and poverty and violence against children? It doesn’t seem like conservatives care about those things? How would a Christian explain so many Iraqi deaths to their God?

Seriously: how can you be a Christian and not be a conservative? All the things you mentioned came about as a result of liberal apathy or moral relativism.

It was liberals who supported Saddam Hussein and his regime of atrocities. As for Iraqi deaths, the ones that should be doing the explaining are the terrorists who kill them and/or hide behind them to get them killed.

Poverty: has the so called war on poverty decreased our poverty levels, or do Democrats maintain it while giving it lots of lip service to get votes by blaming it on Republicans? Has handing out services under the auspices of "helping" the poor made them more or less dependent on government?

Good God, man (or woman)! Compare the Carter years to the Reagan years! It took most of Reagan's two terms to erase the damage done by Carter, but we still enjoy the fruits of Reaganism today (Clinton benefited mightily, although his real savior (well everyone's actually) was the Republican Congress led by Gingrich). And Reagan still had time to crush the Soviet Union, something the liberals said could not be done (and they fought him tooth and nail all along the way)!

Here is one for you: how could Bill Clinton let millions die in Rwanda while jumping into the Balkans with both feet for considerably fewer atrocities? See any racism there? How can you say that the liberal concept of "affirmative action" is anything but a form of racism itself, and perpetuates racism by its very existence? How does the liberal love of bilingual education do anything but hold people back, and say that they are incapable of learning English like everyone else that came here? Does the "soft bigotry of low expectations" ring a bell?

Sorry to add to your confusion. You have lots of homework to do! ;-)

It is just proof positive of how tiny and intolerant the liberal mind is. They cannot face a real debate because they are doomed to lose. It is the "knife to a gunfight" argument. Think about it: have you ever had a "conversation" with a liberal that got past the thin veneer of their talking points? Then the ad hominem attacks begin, in a feeble attempt to deflect their lack of facts by putting you on the defensive (see homophobe, racist, bigot etc.).

The inability to deal like adults in a debate extends from the lowest common denominator liberal that will key your car or slash your tires if you have a "W" sticker on it, to the Congress of the U.S. which is trying to pass the onerous "Fairness Doctrine" to squelch criticism of their liberal and frequently anti U.S. legislation and statements.

One way to deal with "conversations" with liberals is to pretend to play devil's advocate, with the media-esque terms such as "some say" or "many say" this or that. Just keep smiling but lob the facts into the fray, and watch the fun. When you get good at it, it is almost better than plinking at targets at the range!

Living in San Diego it is hit or miss here. One time a friend of mine took me to a party with her, she is not really political, but there was a pack of elitists in the kitchen going on and on about how America has screwed up the world. I went in, made myself a drink and said that I was so relieved to find out it was a majority of liberals at the party. I said that that way I knew there would not be any "minorities" there. They looked at me and I said, you know how we are, we talk about equality, but we don't really want them around us socially. You could have heard a pin drop as all of these boneheads looked at each other with blank stares. I think they knew I was a conservative and had no way to answer. I bet they had never been to a social gathering that was not all white.

I have been observing human behaviour for 77 years and still do not understand how presumably intelligent people of both political persuasions can live in the same environment and circumstances and have diametrically opposed political convictions.
I avoid discussing politics whenever possible. I do not believe anyone who has adopted a political mindset can be talked out of it.
My personal "tragedy": My brillian eldest daughter, raised in a conservative middle class environment and a red, white and blue award winning patriot as a teenager, went off to law school and emerged a flaming liberal.

She has prospered in her law career, lives in a paid for $1.8 million home, drives a Prius hybrid for environmental reasons on weekdays and a $100K Mercedes convertible on weekends, ski junkets to Europe, winter cruises in Caribbean and Greek islands, etc.. and, inexplicably, has a visceral, unreasoning hatred for all things and people conservative.
When I challenge her about why she is so dissatisfied with her country which has afforded her a rather luxurious life and exactly what it is she wants to change, this glib, articulate litigator has no answer.

Screw them. This is part of the reason that the RNC thinks that the Reagan coalition is dead. I make libs feel like the idiots they are whenever the opportunity presents itself.

Keep fighting. Most libs can't articulate a real debate.

I believe all of it. I remember how much grief I got in grad school for being both conservative and a Christian. I believe it was the death knell to my PhD when my committee found out about it.
