Next stop, Germany: Ich bin ein beginner!

By Michelle Malkin  •  July 24, 2008 09:10 AM

Germany awaits The One. After getting heckled at the Western Wall, a fact you will be hard pressed to find reported in the American media, Barack Obama has arrived in Germany.

Wonderful Tennyson Hayes has once again produced a special Obama poster to commemorate the occasion:

The Citizen of the World is ready for his photo-op:

“Barack Obama arrived in Germany Thursday morning to much fanfare, as local television stations aired live coverage and fans gathered in the streets for a glimpse at the U.S. Democratic presidential candidate who will be delivering a much anticipated speech here later today.

Obama said the speech, which is to address transatlantic relations, isn’t comparable to famous ones in Berlin by Presidents Kennedy and Reagan because “they were presidents. I am a citizen. But obviously Berlin is representative of the extraordinary success of the post-World War II effort to bring the continent together and to bring the West together and then later to bring the East and the West together. So I think it’s a natural place.”

Yeah, never mind all that Nazi symbolism and stuff…

“Griping.”

I happened to watch some of the TV coverage in Germany here today and have to say that the obvious fawning of most news anchors and all the enthusiasm feels rather strange. German politicians are more often criticized than lauded by our media and the kind of unquestioned enthusiasm most of our media displays today is rather weird to watch.

On some TV channels, they have declared today officially “Obama-Day” (and they even use the term for the flashes) , devoting hours and hours of coverage to his visit in Berlin. The complete and total opposite of the usually very critical coverage of G.W. It seems that for many journalists, Obama is kind of the “Anti-Bush”…

I remember living in West Germany for several years on a military base and I don’t seem to recall many German’s fleeing the Democratic and Capitalistic West Germany and risking death to cross into Communist and Socialist East Germany. I do however remember seeing many East German’s getting shot in the back in the news fairly often for trying to escape from the brutal repression that was East Germany.

(CNN) — Barack Obama has been greeted by enthusiastic — at times even wild — crowds throughout his trip abroad, but at least one man wasn’t happy with the Democratic presidential candidate’s visit to one of the most sacred spots in Jerusalem early Thursday morning.

During an unannounced visit to the Western Wall — during which he was escorted by the Wall’s rabbi, Shmuel Rabinovich, a man only yards away from the Illinois senator repeatedly yelled “Obama, Jerusalem is not for sale! Obama, Jerusalem is not for sale!”

The comments come a day after Obama reiterated his stance Jerusalem should remain the capital city of Israel. Though he noticeably did not repeat his headline-grabbing June comment that the city should remain “undivided.”

Watch: Obama steps gingerly in Israel

Shortly before he arrived in Jerusalem Wednesday, a group of religious leaders there charged him with flip-flopping on the status of Israel’s capital, and called on him to re-commit to that position.

“I also have said that it is important that we don’t simply slice the city in half, but I’ve also said that that’s a final status issue. That’s an issue that has to be dealt with with the parties involved — the Palestinians and the Israelis. It’s not the United States’ job to dictate the form in which that will take, but rather to support the efforts that are being made right now to resolve these very difficult issues that have a long history,” he told reporters Thursday.

Jerusalem has also been claimed by Palestinian leaders as the capital of any future state. Congress passed a law declaring the city the capital of Israel, and saying it should remain undivided, but the U.S. Embassy has remained in Tel Aviv.

After a brief prayer, Obama walked to the Wall and left a note, as is custom, before placing his hand in the Wall and bowing his head. Meanwhile, the heckler continued his chant as Obama left the site.

Others who had gathered around attempted to obscure the heckler’s words with chants of “Obama, Obama.”

Obama’s visit at the Wall lasted about 10 minutes. Obama noted later to reporters that his visit there was “rowdier than the last time.”

    And therein lies the problem.

George Bush himself isn’t why there’s so much anti-Americanism in Germany and the rest of “old” Europe these days. Bush is rather a lightning rod: he’s come to symbolize everything that anti-American Europeans hate about us as a people, and not just as a president.

What’s so ironic is that the one nation on Earth that most needs to be kept on a leash for the sake of peace and humanity — Germany — is full of people who believe the same thing about the only nation on Earth capable of keeping them leashed.

With that in mind, any thinking American should be asking, “If they don’t like us so much, then why do they like him so much?”

You know why: “The enemy of my enemy is my friend.”

Germans want to see America taken down several notches. To see us humbled, humiliated, and reduced to impotence — just like we did to them in the two world wars that they started.

And lo, there comes to Berlin a candidate for the American presidency who wants to do just that. No wonder they’re slobbering all over Hopenchange just like they did with der Fuhrer seventy years ago, right down to the public hysteria at his speeches.

Germans can’t make Germany a great nation again, but they can hope for “revenge” upon the country that neutered them, and root for the guy they believe will help them have their vengeance.

Yes, some conservatives have disagreed with some McCain positions, but not the important ones (Stay in Iraq until the end of time, reduce taxes to explode the deficit, appoint conservative automatons to the Supreme Court). Liberals are upset with some Obama positions (caving in on FISA, merit pay for teachers, unconditional support for Israel). I just wanted to pass along that Senator Obama came to Bagram Afghanistan for about an hour on his visit to ‘ The War Zone ‘ . I wanted to share with you what happened.

He got off the plane and got into a bullet proof vehicle, got to the area to meet with the Major General (2 Star) who is the commander here at Bagram.

As the Soldiers where lined up to shake his hand, he blew them off and didn’t say a word as he went into the conference room to meet the General. As he finished, the vehicles took him to the ClamShell (pretty much a big top tent that military personnel can play basketball or work out in with weights) so he could take his publicity pictures playing basketball. He again shunned the opportunity to talk to Soldiers to thank them for their service.

So really he was just here to make a showing for the Americans back home that he is their candidate for President…

I swear we got more thanks from the NBA Basketball Players or the Dallas Cowboy Cheerleaders than from one of the Senators, who wants to be the President of the United States.

Plus he lies more than Bill Clinton.

How about this whopper of a lie he told in Israel, from the National Review online:

Now, in terms of knowing my commitments, you don’t have to just look at my words, you can look at my deeds. Just this past week, we passed out of the U.S. Senate Banking Committee, which is my committee, a bill to call for divestment from Iran, as a way of ratcheting up the pressure to ensure that they don’t obtain a nuclear weapon.

But Obama is not a member of the Senate Banking, Housing and Urban Affairs Committee. Obama just made that up so he could count the committee’s action as one of “my deeds.”

If committed by a Republican, this would be a gaffe of historic proportions. Even a Senator as inattentive to his duties as Obama certainly knows what committees he serves on. For him to fabricate the claim, out of whole cloth, that the Senate Banking Committee is “[his] committee,” strikes me as another sign of Obama’s megalomania. That, plus more evidence that he is totally at sea without a teleprompter.

Um…. Hello McCain camp, cue lie commercial.

He not only reminds me of Hiltler. I was reading a letter yesterday, written by a Cuban refugee. He has been in the States for 40 years. He said that Castro was young and vibrant, and very carismatic. People followed him, just as they are Obama. Castro pledged CHANGE, that was his platform. He promised healthcare to all, the government would take care of everyone.
The people didn’t look aat his background, or even care. They paid no attention to his friends, they just followed him like he was a pied piper. Only when it was too late, did they realize what he was, and what kind of change he had in mind.
Hitler did the same thing. Women swooned in his presence.
Don’t let it be the same with us America.

Maybe you didn’t get it. Let’s look at what Obama had to say:

obviously Berlin is representative of the extraordinary success of the post-World War II effort to bring the continent together

Do you know why Berlin is such an obvious success? It’s because we stationed troops there to protect the peace and help rebuild the country. In fact, we still have troops there today! World War II ended in 1945. That means we have had troops there for 63 years!

Yet you and Obama are both demanding that we pull troops out of Iraq right now. The problem with that policy is that we (and Iraq) need the troops to be there because that is a requirement to be able to repeat the success of Berlin and Germany.

Why do you have such a hard time understanding these obvious parallels?

For the record, I don’t. The visual imagery of his campaign is more than a little reminiscent of that used by totalitarian movements of the 20th century – more Leninist/Stalinist than anything else, but I don’t think Obama is those guys either.

That this is the approach he has chosen for his brand image is interesting though. That it has been effective with his sycophantic followers is disturbing.

She said that was why she supported Obama and not McCain. When I told her it wasn’t McCain to whom I was referring, but rather Obama, she said I didn’t know what I was talking about and walked away in a huff. Why are these people permitted to vote? Germans want to see America taken down several notches. To see us humbled, humiliated, and reduced to impotence — just like we did to them in the two world wars that they started.

They are so racist, too. I lived in Germany four years in the 80′s because my father was in the military, and Germans actually thought that black people grew tails at the stroke of midnight. They are still very racist. They like Obama because they think he will humiliate us Americans, and it is a way for them to feel superior.

I think this trip is backfiring in a big way. Like Regulus said, there are stupid Americans, but Americans as a whole are not stupid. (Only problem is we haven’t been assimilating immigrants, and many people that vote these days are hardly “American.”) Another problem is that we have a North Korean-like media.

Still, when they see Barack Obama cheered by a whole bunch of Nazis, and Obama preferred doing this than visiting U.S. troops, people are going to wonder, why do all the foreigners love Obama so much.

Also, Americans dislike hype. Once hype reaches a certain stage, there is ALWAYS a backlash. Could this be the moment?

I disagree. Many Americans love hype and are obsessed with Hollywood celebrities, sports stars, pop musicians etc…Unfortunately many of them vote and most are Obama supporters. They won’t tire of the hype until long after the election and the only change they see is a declining standard of living and higher taxes.

That’s nonsense. German’s still live most of American culture, and they still like most Americans. What they don’t like are Americans who act like SOBs. There’s difference between wanting to see us not be arrogant and wanting to see us humbled. This has nothing to do with Germans wanting to be free from a tether; the Germans have no interest in invading anyone and couldn’t conceivably want to do so for another generation or two. They have a weak chancellorship, a weak federal government, no federal police, and the Euro. The conditions simply don’t exist for a fascist take-over or for a fascist to stand to gain from invading anyone.

Germany is a great nation. They just aren’t, and won’t be anytime soon, strong enough to be able to act with near impunity or to invade their neighbors frivolously. You can be great without being arrogant or capricious with one’s military strength.
