Crowd inflation: 200,000 or 20,000?

By Michelle Malkin  •  July 25, 2008 12:01 PM

Just how many showed up for the Ich bin ein beginner speech?

John Rosenthal compares the Obamedia’s estimates to German public tv’s much lower numbers.

The audacity of hype continues…

Could you ever imagine 20,000 to 200,000 Americans congregating to listen to some schmoe who’s running for office in Germany?

Do the people of Berlin have a lot of time on their hands? Or do people still force them congregate for speeches like that?

Yeah, to be sure he and the media tried to make some kind of mental-emotional linkage to JFK (and Reagan), Tom. I don’t think it worked very well, he came off more like a college kid delivering a trippy-60s type commenencement speech than anything else. I would be surprised if polls done after this trip show him gaining anything from it.

I think the Obama saturation point is here or at hand for most Americans. Y’know like how you’d wanna throw out your TV out the window if you heard one more story about OJ or Paris Hilton?

But you don’t want to stop the guy from stumbling around like this! I’d be happy if he’d stay outta the US and in Europe for a month with nothing but Obama 24/7 back home driving voters nuts.

I have to agree with the majority here. There’s no way that’s 200,000 people. Not even close.

My city’s local festival, the Asparagus festival, attracted a grand total of just over 100k people this year, and I was there to witness the crowd. It occupied a width of a couple of main streets of downtown Stockton, about 8-10 city blocks long, and was easily as dense as the crowd shown in the pictures of Obama’s speech. 100k was the attendance figure for an evening and 2 days, meaning on a given day, only ~33k-40k people were there. Given that a crowd of 33k people covered a much larger area than is shown in that picture, I’d guess the figure is closer to the 20,000 attendees estimate.

Yeah, not very scientific, but good enough that I doubt it’s off by anywhere NEAR an order of magnitude.

I have no idea what the motivations were. All I know is that I have an official police estimate for my basis. And note that that is where the number came from, not Obama’s campaign and not the MSM, they just reported it using that number.

    And you all have what?

    A TV reporter guy?

Has anyone given me one reason why the police would so egregiously misstate the number? No.

Has anyone offered me any evidence that they did so? No.

But this issue is frankly becoming rather stupid. Whatever the number, it was an impressive crowd.

Naw, go out and if nothing else vote for yourself as a write in for every office. At least you’ll know what you’re getting if you win. Besides, it’s a grand just-for-the-heckuvit tradition to go down to the polling place, if nothing else. Also, there’s fun odd little things like school bonds, sewage disposal, or other cool stuff to vote for/against.

7.5% unemployment rate= 3.16 millionpeople unemployed (East Berlin has an even higher unemployment rate of 13.6% as of June 08). And as we all know, unemployment rates only count the people actively looking for work. Given that Germany has an extremely generous social welfare system, you can bet there are hundreds of thousands of more people content on being unemployed and living off the government.

Besides it was a Thursday, if you’re employed chances are you’re working and not going to rock concerts and seeing foreign officials attempting to be heads of state.

So here’s what I’m saying, if you have free music, food, and beer, the unemployed will come….and there are a lot of unemployed in Germany.

If the Obama campaign is really that interested in the German voting population, he should run for President of Germany.

Oh, no big surprise that the media coverage (or should I say the one-sided telescoped coverage) of Obama may make it seem like 200,000.

The old AFL (American Football League) used to pack people in the first four rows of seats and the end zones in the stadiums and then tell ABC and NBC to keep the cameras tightly cropped so that it would appear more people were at the game.

Sounds like Obama’s campaign might be using the same tactic.
