Sanctuary v. enforcement in neighboring counties: a natural experiment.
Here’s what the social-science types might call a “natural experiment”: have one county take a hard line on illegal immigration. Have the adjacent county adopt a sanctuary policy. What happens to crime rates as a result?
First, let’s see what happens in sanctuary land (under the auspices of aspiring congressman Gerry Connolly):
Overall crime in Fairfax County increased by nearly 22 percent for the first quarter 2008 compared to first quarter figures from last year.

Overall, property crimes, including burglary, larceny and car theft increased 24 percent, echoing “what appears to be happening in other localities in the region,” police said.
Well, not quite everywhere in the region: here’s a report from Fairfax County’s pro-enforcement neighbor, Prince William County:
Recently, Prince William County reported a 19.3 percent decline in crime, with chairman of the Board of County Supervisors Corey Stewart attributing the downturn to the hard line the county has taken toward illegal immigrants.
So, pretty much what common sense tells you would happen, then.
While I’m still on the subject, do check out this AP Report of a Congressional hearing about the Postville raids. The Congressional Hispanic Caucus is angry that ICE did its job in Postville, and the sob-story coverage is utterly infuriating:
Postville Mayor Robert Penrod told the congressmen to take the message back to Washington that immigration raids do not work.
“This raid did nothing for this community,” he said. “It downgraded us substantially. It caused people to suffer, and it caused our reputation to suffer clear across the country.”
Sires, the New Jersey congressman, said he was convinced.
“I don’t see this type of thing working someplace else,” he said. “We don’t want it to ever happen again.”
Wow, that’s some chutzpah right there. The federal government raids your town for an ongoing criminal enterprise and the mayor whines that the Feds are making you look bad?
Next up: Harley “Bubba” Drinkwater of Idabel, Oklahoma testifies before Congress that a DEA raid on the meth lab he was running out of his basement has severely “downgraded” the value of his property.

But don’t expect liberals to understand this. Much like they can’t get their heads around the statistics proving gun-control laws do not decrease crime, they’ll try to explain this away with equally specious logic.
Dallas wants to be a Sancuary City but the suburb cities surrounding Dallas are making their positions on illegal aliens crystal clear. There should be a legal way to bring people into compliance, issue a Temporary Visas, to people who are working, and have been veted through a medical and criminal check. Yes I know this isn’t popular and should have happened before they entered OUR Country but that isn’t the reality. I can’t go to Mexico and expect to be treated as a citizen of Mexico if I have no Legal documentation.

It is amazing how adhering to the rule of law can have a significant impact on the crime rate of a community. Illegal invaders have already broken our county’s laws by being here so why the heck should they bother to obey any others. The liberal hispandering Fairfax County government is receiving all the pain it deserves. Hopefully the citizens that can’t escape will rise up and throw the bums in their local government out. Time will tell if the sheeple have had enough or just bend over and watch their community continue to turn into a third world cesspool.

Well if you are allowed to get documentation to become a citizen of Mexico don’t think they will ever let you become a citizen of equal rights they wont, read their constitution, its all in there. If a 22% increase in crime against US citizens is of no concern to politicians, they need to be replaced. Once again, welfare of illegals takes precedence over US citizens. Unbelievable.
Actually if you take the 22 % increase and you add the 19 % decrease it ends up being 41%. Now if we had the numbers on their numbers we could figure out how much of the crime is attributed to them. Are 5 or 10% responsible for 41% of the crime?

Mayor, you should see the positive side of this. If you have an unemployment rate that relates to legal citizens they should be able to get jobs now and get off the welfare and unemployment. Get them to do “the jobs Americans won’t do” and change that phrase. Your town could be a beacon to the rest of the United States if you choose to shine.

I’ve been watching the illegal invasion from the south for almost forty years now. I live at ground zero of this illegal invasion. I have first hand experience of what illegal aliens have brought with them. I live in Mexifornia.
I’ve noticed that anyone who enters our country illegally don’t respect our country’s sovereignty. They don’t respect our laws. And once these illegal aliens enter our country, the first thing they are doing is breaking the law. And it’s very likely that they will continue to break other laws in the future and most of them do. ID theft, driving with out a license or insurance. Driving while drunk is highly common with illegal aliens. Not filing income tax. Possession of a gun that is not legal for a illegal alien to posses. Violating state and local occupancy laws.Using our hospitals emergency rooms for general health care and not having any intention of paying that hospital bill and sticking it to the tax payers.
The idea of sanctuary policies was the thinking that illegal aliens would come forward and report crime to the police with out fear of deportation. But they don’t, they refuse to snitch on their fellow illegal alien criminals. Show me one community in California that has a large illegal alien population that doesn’t have a high crime rate. There aren’t any.
Then you have city governments who say that illegal immigration is a federal job and that only the federal government should enforce federal immigration laws. How many times have we heard Mayor Vilalraza of Los Angeles make this claim ? And when ICE comes to Los Angeles and conducts one ICE raid and start enforcing our immigration laws, the first person to complain that the federal government shouldn’t be enforcing our immigration laws is Mayor Vilalaraza.
A few months ago I watched the Mayor of San Francisco proclaiming that his city was a sanctuary city and that all illegal aliens are welcomed and that the city would protect them from deportation from the federal government. They even have a large bill board proclaiming that they are a sanctuary city. The city government of San Francisco went as far as protecting illegal aliens convicted of a felony from deportation. Now the Mayor and the people of San Francisco have blood on their hands. One of those illegal aliens who they protected three times from the federal government has murdered three Americans !
Sanctuary policies are a criminal act. Aiding and abetting criminals is a criminal act. Mayor’s Newsome and Villalaraza are criminals.

“The Jerk” is an apt nickname. I used to work at the government center before becoming a teacher. This guy threw a ridiculous temper tantrum at a woman for “blocking” his way into the government center parking garage. She was waiting for me and another guy in the other lane to finish refueling the county car and couldn’t block us in.
He jumped out of his car and hurled invectives at this woman. She didn’t know who he was and told him to “go around her.” But he wouldn’t. He had to make a huge scene. She then pulled up next to my car and said, “What on earth is his problem? He could easily have gone around me.”
Then “Geraldo” Connelly got out of his car in a big huff and took down the license number of her County Car.
He has a real reputation, but sadly Fairfax County voters have become so liberal, he will easily win his election.
I’ve noticed that gang graffiti has increased a lot in the past year in even very nice areas of the County, since the Prince William illegals have moved into out County. I call the Police Department every time I see a new piece of gang graffiti. They just want me to report it to VDOT, so they don’t have to deal with it. We have very incompetent police officers in Fairfax County. It is because they have become so emasculated by liberal policies and “multicultural” hiring practices.
By the way if you live in the Springfield District of Fairfax County (that is parts of Burke, West Springfield, Fairfax Station, Clifton, and Fairfax) we have a Republican County supervisor; complain about the increase of graffiti and crime to him. You could get the same testimony from wives of other men detained for criminal activity. Should we empty our prisons so wives can be reunited with lawbreaking husbands? Or should we enforce our laws to protect the public and let those who choose to risk illegal behavior suffer the consequences?

But when people improve their standard of living they tend to produce more CO2. So, when liberals finally realize they have to choose between “saving the planet” and saving lawbreakers from the law, which will they choose? It’s a tough choice – for liberals.

Here in Peoria we regularly hear gunshots at night. Because of an incident a few months ago where I chased four guys off by grabbing my 45 I now arm myself to take out the trash. This is no way to live.
I had to do a fire investigation in Springfield, VA in a residential home in a residential very nice neighborhood. The home had a daycare center.
The fire did not do too much damage. We noticed the basement steps had been sealed off to the upstairs and the basement doors were locked with different set of keys. We were able to get in and found the basement was configured into 10 small rooms with two bathrooms and a kitchen area. The rooms were occupied by hispanic tenants and they did not appear to be here legally. There was also a large addition being added. The permits were only for the shell but not to finish the interior. I suspect the addition was for more “rooms” and would have been finished without the permits.
The insurance company reps were not very happy, because they were supposed to be insuring a single family residence.

I used to work for the County. I don’t work for the County anymore, so I have no fear about being fired or anything by exposing all the corruption there. In one department (Permits) I worked in, there were 8 supervisors for 12 employees, 3 of which did absolutely NOTHING. One just played video games all day.
Another section I worked in (I was working for the County while working on an Master of Education (Tax Administration), so I could quit and start teaching, which I have), I had to walk an older section of houses in North Springfield. The County had us take pictures of fronts and backs of houses to bust anyone who had things on the houses that weren’t being taxed. Tax Admin is actually walking EVERY neighborhood in Fairfax County to increase revenue. They have been doing this for 3 years now, so in the next 3 years, all the neighborhoods will have been walked.
THAT is the extent that Fairfax County cares about anything–to get more taxes. In the neighborhood I walked in North Springfield, there were houses that had numerous cars and families living in one house. The older citizens, many of whom lived in the neighborhood for decades, were constantly complaining to me about the zoning violations.
When you walk townhouse neighborhoods, townhouse after townhouse is for sale because of foreclosures by the illegals that Wachovia and other banks stupidly gave mortgages to.
But “Geraldo” Connelly does NOTHING about these violations. Why? He simply cares about tax revenue. PLUS, all the Hispanics are voting. I know this for a fact. Guess which party the Hispanics are voting for? So what incentive does “Geraldo” Connelly have to do anything about illegals?
Clarification: I was working for a Master of Education in the evenings and working in Tax Administration. . .not working on a Master of Education in Tax Administration, though I can definitely see Fairfax County inventing something like that.
What a corrupt County! I think there are about 16,000 employees, and yet they can’t tax us citiznes high enough for all these employees, half of which could easily be laid off to save citizens taxes.

#52–I’m having a couple of quotes from alarm companies for my new home in suburban Fairfax county. I see the writing on the wall, and it says “Chinga tu madre”.
Plus I’m serious about this sort of thing. And I would guess a lot of my neighbors are, too.
The best thing to do is to constantly pester the Board of Supervisors in person about the grafitti problem and the fact that we taxpayers are going to have to pay for thousands of new illegals in the public school system from illegals moving here from Prince William. If you email them your concerns, they don’t do anything about it:

The graffiti problem is getting extremely annoying. http://www.bvbl.net I reported to the police graffiti along the sound barriers on Ox and Lee Chapel, the Fairfax County Parkway and Lee Chapel and Waterline Drive and the Parkway. I was going down the list, and the police woman became impatient and claimed that she couldn’t imagine that the police had not already taken note of it.
My question is: Are they not patrolling the Fairfax County Parkway? How can anyone get away with elaborate graffiti and not be caught? She said it was VDOT’s responsibility to clear the graffiti.
That is “Geraldo” Connelly and the Fairfax County police’s solution to everything: pin the blame on the state, the Federal Government, anyone but themselves for encouraging a sanctuary county.
I hope so, but I doubt that Connelly will lose because Fairfax County has become so liberal.
Since when did trailers have basements?
My hope is that Mrs. Bologna who lost her husband and both sons to an illegal gang member has connections with some otherwise reputable criminal organization and that this reputable criminal organization is willing to take on the disreputable bunch of criminals in City Hall.

I live in PWC… There is still A LOT of work that needs to be done here. Hopefully the trend to fight illegal immegration will continue and the crime and other problems will continue to decline, but there is so much pushing for illegal immegration to continue, I have a really hard time holding out hope. We have both political parties ignoring the issue. We have major incentives for them to come here still: Free Healthcare, Free birthing including pre-natal care and car seats when they leave the hospital, Free baby formula, amazing (compared to mexico) free schools, food stamps, welfare, and coutless other minority benifits that an average white-guy like me would never qualify for… Add in a Catholic church that is heavily funding the legal fees for people fighing deportations and the take-over is all but complete.

I think the whole “Press 1 for English” and the easy availability of spanish speaking TV channels and spanish speaking businesses is making the whole “assimilation” into the US culture, a thing of the past. Going forward we are going to have these cultural divisions, and they are going to cause big problems.

Generally speaking it’s a truism that a small, recidivist minority is responsible for a disproportionaite amount of crime. I suspect the same is true among illegals (except of course for the crime they’re all committing by being here).
We don’t have that problem in Tulsa County, OK. Our Sheriff Stanley Glanz has partnered with I.C.E. on immigration enforcement. This is from the 2007 Annual Report:
On September 18, 2007, twenty-eight Tulsa
County Sheriff’s Office personnel consisting of
deputies and detention officers, graduated from a
Federal Immigration and Customs Enforcement
Academy (ICE), which was held at the David L. Moss
Criminal Justice Center. The five week training in
Immigration law, fraudulent document identification
and other related immigration courses prepared the
officers to assume their new federal authority as ICE
officers under 287(g). This section of the Immigration
Nationality Act (INA) authorizes Federal authority
to State officers and employees to investigate, apprehend
and detain those aliens found to be in violation of
Federal immigration law. The TCSO is the only nonfederal
law enforcement entity in the State of Oklahoma
with this authority and one of the few agencies throughout
the entire country with 287(g) authority.
