GOP corruptocrat alert: Stevens indicted
Alaska GOP Sen. Ted Stevens, the embodiment of Beltway arrogance, has been charged with seven counts of making false statements and covering up gifts he failed to disclose:
A 28-page indictment outlining the charges released by the Justice Department said Stevens provided false information in financial disclosure forms he filed with the Senate that required him to report items of value he had received. He filed the forms between 1999 and 2006.
“Stevens knew the requirements of the financial disclosure forms and knowingly and intentionally sought to conceal and cover up his receipt of things of value by filing financial disclosure forms that contained false statements and omissions concerning Stevens’ receipt of these things of value,” the indictment said.
Stevens, 84, faces a tough campaign for election in November to a seventh term. He has become vulnerable largely because of his legal problems.
He was first appointed to the Senate in 1968 to fill the seat vacated by the death of Democratic Sen. Bob Bartlett. He won the seat in a special 1970 election and was repeatedly reelected by wide margins, most recently in 2002 with 79 percent of the vote.
Stevens, known for being hard-driving and having a hot-temper, has earned a reputation for delivering billions of dollars in federal projects to his oil-producing state.
The charges will make his re-election campaign tougher and could further improve Democrats chances of expanding their thin Senate majority, now at 51-49.
“He has already been in trouble. This puts him in worse trouble,” said Jennifer Duffy, who tracks Senate races for the nonpartisan Cook Political Report. She said Stevens may decide to drop out of the race, though there was no immediate word if he would.
The GOP should be all over him to step aside. It would be better late than never.
Allah’s got the lowdown on the case, VECO, and the bribery angle.
More here.
Said it before, will say it again:
Republicans can’t tell the Dems to clean their House, if they won’t come clean about the GOP’s own dirtbags.

Good, when are the corrupt democrats going to be lined up next to him on the wall?
HAHHHAAHHAHAHHAAAHHA
sonofdy,
You are always good for a laugh.
Well, he is in Alaska so no need to stuff cash in the fridge. Just put it in a snow bank.
Ha!
He’ll always have that bridge…
One down, ninety-nine to go.
Agreed. It works both ways. I wish we could clean them all out and start from scratch with a new Congress.
On-my-soap-box: I aim to please.
The dems and the press will be all over this corrupt republican but their cockroaches will be kept snug-as-a-bug-in-a-rug thank you.
Holy S. Earthquake.
Still Shaking.
A politician who’s corrupt? I’m shocked, shocked, I tell you!
O! Happy Day!
Stevens & other members of the AK Republican oligarchy played a large part in my total disenfranchisement from the Republican party. I hope this pig is given the maximum of whatever penalties might be in the offing.
Will he have the decency to resign? Not bloody likely.
OINK OINK….I couldn’t be happier with this news today….egotistical, arrogant little wimp of a man and I use the word man lightly.
No surprise here. This clown was a pork king before Sheets Byrd moved 1/2 of the federal government to his home state of West Virginia.
Corruption knows no boundaries. Our entire system as we know it today needs to be flushed!
By system I mean the corrupt career politicos and the un-named, unelected minions of the machine.
Here is a lesson to Dimocraps, this is how Conservitives feel about corruption in the electorate:
If Steven’s is convicted of wrong doing, take him to the military side of Leaveanworth and let him break rocks all day along with Jefferson and any of the other corruptocrat politiciahs. I don’t care how old he or any of the others are.
politicians
“The internet is a series of tubes…” will be your legacy, Mr Stevens.
Oh, and that bridge.

5.6 EaRtHqUaKe greater LA AREA, I live in Palm Springs and felt it very well here I guessed over 5, rolled pretty good for quite some time by EQ standards….. the epicenter must have really got a jolt.
JUSTICE!
Let’s give him a fair trial, and a first-class hanging…
Hmmm? Interesting that a Republican Senator gets an indictment but the various felonies of Harry Reid, Hillary Clinton and Ted Kennedy (just to mention a few Leftard criminals in the Senate) get ignored..I smell another Democommie political witch hunt with another Scooter Libby going down in flames.
Hello AJ, That was a good one. I just felt an aftershock.
where are you john?, bad memory…
Hey See-Dubya, did you know something about this EQ and didn’tlet on?
Right now I’m in Paramount. Chino Hills is where the center was.
Giong to check on my 52′ plasma t.v. now.
here has all info… now they say 5.8
5.5 is equal to 178kilotons of TNT. YIKES.
USGS
That was a little bit of hell freezing over from sonofdy’s request!
USGS Map
You beat me to it aj
I think we should do to Stevens exactly what was done to Larry Craig.
Since when has criminal activity be a defacto ejection from Congress ?
How else can we maintain Karl Rove’s “permanent Republican majority” if we keep tossing people out.
Haven’t felt the aftershocks…..
He will soon go the way of Vitter and Craig…wait, er, I mean…ya.
This is what I mean when I refer to Republicans these days as “The Oakland Raiders of politics.” Just as soon as negative public attention begins to shift to the donkeys in Congress, somebody with an (R) after his name whips out his pistol and aims squarely at his foot.
Wasn’t Ted Stevens the guy who went after Pence about pork barrel issues.. or was it de Mint he railed against… either one, Stevens lost his conservative mantle long ago
So, Mr. Bridge-To-Nowhere is finally getting his comeuppance! Good! Now, let’s get after the rest of the pork thieves.
Partisan much? Moral equivalency much? Were you just “swoopin’ and poopin’” or was this an actual point?
Oh, perhaps you need to explain this sorta behavior to such “clean” folks as Frank, Murtha, Jefferson, and your majority leader Mr. Land Deals.
This issue has nothing to do with Karl Rove and you know it. Then again, your senseless dribble really had not point, now did it?
self-edit: not= no
The old fool says he’s going to run for re-election. Anyone wanna lay odds on him getting re-elected? He may have to serve his time from a jell cell but I’ll bet money he gets re-elected, brings too much to the state for them to kick him out.
.
Good grief, can’t even spell “jail”.
Well hell.
.
G’bye Ted! Come back when ya can’t stay so long!
Well said.
Who will Gov Palin appoint to replace him? This could very well make or break that senate election.
We have to do our part to support conservatives so that we can avoid having corrupt RINO disasters like Stevens from happening, which is why my co-blogger created Down the Ticket. Be sure to drop by and bookmark it.
I have noticed something noticeably absent from the comments here…
[[ ...putting on lgm disguise ]]
Well, if you think Sen. Stevens is bad, you should consider what Sen. Schumer(D) did two weeks ago to help crash IndyMac.
/lgm off
bleh. Now all I need is a heavy club and a bridge.
Point is, when a Senator with an “R” after his name is indicted, we urge him to step down or that the other Republicans purge him. No moral equivalency on what the other side does.
I completely agree with our hostess. We need to keep our own house clean. I’m glad this piece of dirt has been indicted.
Now, we need to get rid of him, Craig, and all the others that bring shame to their office in such ways.
Quit wasting the tax payers money, take the corrupt b@$tard out and lynch him. If he’s hiding in Alaska, I would ask the good citizens there; Where’s your fronteer spirit? Go kick his door in,and hang the $on-of-a b!tch.
Does he have a primary opponent? Let’s hope.
Bye, Ted. Don’t let the Senate door hit you in the butt on the way out.
corruption in government, from both sides of the aisle, is old news.
Dear jtex
Dear jtex
You had it right the first time. Most of those guys go to a “jell” cell. Put one of them in a real cell and they would be screaming for more than sympathy.
I hate my clumsy fingers.
Funny how all this comes out just before the election. As an Alaskan resident I am being diluged with ads for the dimwit dem who is running against Ted this time: Mark Begich. Mark Begich is making hay from his famous (in AK), last name.
Every time I turn on the TV there is an ad for Mark Begich and this has been going on for quite awhile. I can’t begin to imagine where Begich is getting the funds to run his non-stop ad campaign. Ted Stevens may have done some questionable things in the past but Begich is as guilty if not more so in his dirty dealings. But of course Begich is a democrat so he couldn’t possibly be doing anything wrong.
Begich also sucked as mayor of Anchorage.
I really do hope the GOP hounds this total disgrace of a pork barrel spender out of office. Listening to his lame excuse played from a radio apperance on Fox News just isn’t cutting it with me. For years I have railed against him and his partner in pork barrel waste/fraud on the left Senator Byrd of West Virginia. He is right up there with my worthless lying sack of excrement “wide stance Craig.”
Hey! This is fun!
/lgm on
But Chris Dodd took favors from Countrywide Mortgage as a “Friend of Angelo” yet he still ironically heads the banking committee, and hasn’t seen a real investigation or inquiry to date!
/lgm off
Too bad for lgm that our examples are realistic.
I’m not going to defend Ted Stevens.
He is accused of having lied on a federal form and if he did, he needs to suffer the consequences, just like any of us; but this is the best example of the government creating conditions which restrict citizens from creating wealth and improving their own lives.
Alaska is the richest state in natural resources, (gold, oil, natural gas) and has the lowest population per square mile of any of the 50 states. I doubt that 1 in 10 residents are actually from Alsaka originally. I could be wrong, I’m doing this on the fly with no research, except watching the History Channel (Ice Road Truckers, etc)
The resources are hard to get to and the government has imposed environmental regulations which restrict the exploitation of these resources.
Had the government not imposed these regulations, the citizens of Alaska could be enjoying the benefits of jobs working the oil fields, pipelines and drill rigs, in addition to the support stucture, which require people to fill them, (you have to WANT to work in Alaska,) which increases the tax base, which fills the state tax coffers, which reduces the amount of money the federal government has to send back for improvements, which would have eliminated the need for Senator Stevens to make all those backroom deals, which would have negated the necessity of lying on a federal form.
Open ANWR, let the people of Alaska go to work supplying us with much needed domestic oil, which will decrease our imports of foreign oil. Its a win/win situation.
Will it happen? I don’t know, but it sure needs to happen.
Sooner than later.
Not that I’m defending him in any way, but it was interesting to see how the original AP story morphed throughout the day.
Another example of an AP story, by the same reporter, changing from what was originally posted. The first change came after about 30 minutes, with a more sinister headline, to something else about 42 minutes after the original post showing two other GOP senators previously indicted. One was Kay Bailey Hutchison where it was shown a judge ordered her acquittal, but no mention of the political hack DA behind her indictment.
The last change I saw removed the two previously indicted Senators from the article.
For AP’s snotty attitude towards bloggers, at least bloggers are honest in indicating their updates.
All the articles made very clear Stevens was a GOP senator, as were the two examples of other Senators provided, with quotes from colleagues clearly indicated they were GOP.
What a contrast from a dem in trouble. No indication of party, and no quotes from any colleagues.
Oh yeah, I saw the gigantic headline splashed in 72 point type on the NYT’s website. But did you see the story about Newark’s mayor Sharpe James sentenced to 27 months in prison?
Yeah, didn’t think so. Maybe because it was further down in 2 point type…and oh yeah, he’s a Democrat.
Move along, nothing to see here.
That reminds me. McCain claimed that he saved us money by opposing the Bridge to Nowhere. But in reality, McCain didn’t even show up for the vote. In addition, the senate allowed Alaska to use the money earmarked for the Bridge to Nowhere for other projects of their choosing. So we didn’t save a dime. They did this to placate Sen. Stevens who threated to resign over the issue:
Why couldn’t the Senate recognize a win-win situation when they saw one?
I’ve always wondered what Alaska did with the bridge-to-nowhere money. There were no strings attached except that it could not be used to build the bridge. Does anyone know what became of the hundreds of millions given to Alaska to prevent Stevens from resigning? It didn’t go to build a Stevens Memorial or to buy furniture for Stevens’ newly remodeled home, did it?
To Sen. Ted Stevens:
Dude, you’re not helping.
More serious was the results of an internal investigation of hiring in the Justice Department — political and illegal. Presumably the rest of the departments were corrupted in a similar way.
Could you provide a link to the report? or a story of said report?
This ROACH should step aside, and now… We do not need corruption in any segment of government… However, would like to address MSM coverage bias… This AM, eight words into the FRONT PAGE story, Stevens is ID’d as a REPUBLICAN. Inside page 2, story on SHARPE JAMES, former mayor of Newark going to jail. No mention if he is DEM or REPUBLICAN in the WHOLE PARAGRAPH, HMMMMMM???
abstractmind said (#64):
It’s on every major news outlet except possibly Fox. Just open that manhole cover and peek out of the underground place protected from liberal influences.
Says the man that posts link after link from talkingpointsmemo.com.
I should have guessed that even when the posting is a negative story about a Republican, lgm cannot break from form.
The variation is now: if you think this Republican is bad, there’s a whole department that is even worse.
It’s sad, really. Here’s a perfect opportunity for lgm to stay on topic on a subject he should like and he still can’t help but bring equivalency into it and talk about the Justice Department.
