   It just seems like the punitive aspect of incarceration (i.e. prison) fades farther and farther from view with each passing day.

   Televisions in their cells?? When I sent my child to their room for punishment, the last thing I wanted them doing was watching TV and allowing them to enjoy their solitary time.

   It is no wonder that people are not frightened as much about the possibility of going to prison.

   Where is Sheriff Joe when you need him!!!

    Have any of you been sick, or in a situation where you were forced to watch TV for a whole day? I don’t find it pleasant, but that’s me.

    If we were allowed to treat prisoners like we treated them 50 years ago I’d be against this - but those day’s aren’t coming back…

    I thought that’s what the cells were for… now we have to placate (translation: coddle) prisoners so they’ll behave and when this doesn’t work. What’s next? Spa Day?!?

    I work at a prison in Michigan. The inmates have 12″ B&W tv’s that they pay for themselves.They also have to pay for the satellite services(there are different ways this is done).The tv’s can be removed from their cells for rule violations. This can be a good tool for an officer.

    What ever happened to making inmates work for thier food and housing. Can’t we bring in the guy that makes them all sleep outside in tents, wear all bright pink uniforms right down to their undies? Wait this is Maryland, we must treat the inmates better than the residents. Help them to improve their self esteem.

It may babysit the inmates to some degree but it was also a distraction for officers working the unit, because they would end up watching what was happening on the television, instead of supervising what was going on with the population in their unit.

    Just thinking outside the box here, but what about if we locked the cell doors? Wouldn’t that keep the inmates in their cells and reduce gang activity and violence more cheaply? I’m just saying…

    I believe his version would be sitting an Etch-a-Sketch™ in the tent for them to entertain themselves. Even Sheriff Joe isn’t insensitive enough to set a television in a tent with them when they can’t even plug power into it.

    So does 12 hours of chain gang work every day. And it’s cheaper than a gym filled with Bowflex equipment AND satellite television.

    Perhaps if the prison officials were able to put subliminal messages in the images, like in the movie “They Live”.

    Let’s see - I rarely watch even broadcast TV, so it would just mean 500 more channels that stink. On the other hand, it’s a freebie and I do get to vent by punching a guy’s clock out before they allow me to settle in and watch x-rated movies.

    What we *don’t* have to put up with, however, is short sentences. That’s the one thing that we get to vote on, by voting bum-judges (or the politicians that put them in there) out.

    As long as the animals are in prison, I don’t care if playing with dolls. Just keep them off the streets and keep the guards safe.

    Hearing that TV is a distraction to the guards was a bit alarming, but understandable.

    If I had my druthers we’d be back to penal colonies. Put them on an island, keep them on the island (with orders to shoot to kill anyone caught trying to leave the island) and let them do whatever they want to do on the island.

    Just get them off my streets, permanently.
